INTRODUCTION
Highereducationisunderincreasingscrutiny,ascostscontinuetoincreaseandmorestudents
consideralternativestotraditionalresidentialeducation.Inaddition,newcoursemodels(such
asblendedandflipped)provideopportunitiestorethinkthedesignoflearningspaces.Given
thisenvironment,it’simportanttofocusattentiononthevalueofcampusesandinparticular
thosephysicalspaceswherelearningoccursandtoengagekeycampusstakeholders,
instructors,andstudentsintheirplanninganddesign.
TheLearningSpaceRatingSystem(LSRS)providesaframeworktomeasurethe potential
performanceofalearningspace,thatis,toassesswhatthespaceenablesstudentsandfaculty
todoinit.Itservesasawaytomeasureprogresstowardsconsistencyacrosslearningspaces
andtowardsdesignsthatachieveacademicgoals.Italsowillprovidethehighereducation
communitywithacommonlanguageandmethodtodocumentbestpractices.
ThiscurrentversionoftheLSRSmeasures formal learningspaces,thosedesignedto
accommodateface-to-facemeetingsofallcourseparticipants(futureversionswillinclude
informalspaces).Itprovidesasetofcreditsthatassessnotonlythedesignofindividualrooms,
butalsotheplanning,support,evaluation,andstrategicalignmentthatarecrucialtothe
successofthelearningthatgoesonintheroom.Recognizingthatthereisgreatdiversityin
teachingandlearningstyles,theLSRSdoesnotseektoprescribespecificteachingandlearning
practices,butrathertoevaluatearoom’sabilitytosupportabroadrangeofthosepractices.
Weseektoframethelearningspaceasacollaborativeandcommunalundertakingbetween
faculty,students,administration,technologists,facilitiespersonnel,andplanners.Onlyby
workingacrosstheinstitutioncanacampusenvironmentbesustainedthattreatslearning
spaceholisticallyandprovidesanecosystemtosustainfacultyandstudentinteractions.Since
approachinglearningspacesattheinstitutionallevelrequirescoordinationacrossmultiple
groups,sections1,2and3ofthislearningspaceassessmenttoolmeasureinstitutional
readinessordevelopmentofaplanningandoperationsprocess.Sections4,5,and6address
