On the Cover Iberia Yields Treasure

On February 17th, the Dive Boat Wreck Valley headed out for an early season dive on the Iberia in 2-4 ft seas, with winds 15-20 knots from the Southwest. While conditions were less than ideal, their perseverance was rewarded with a truly significant find. Captain Ed Slater recovered the intact deck prism shown in the cover photo, proving once again that artifacts are still there for the taking on even the most regularly visited wrecks. Deck prisms, (also known as “deck lights” or “dead lights”) as their name implies, are prismatic shaped glass devices set into the decks of a ships to illuminate the holds below. The flat side points upwards, becoming a part of the deck, while the prism shaped side hangs below, dispersing light in all directions. They were especially useful for illuminating cargo holds where an open flame would be hazardous, such as for cargos of coal, gunpowder, and other flammable materials. The earliest known deck prisms are from the 1840s, though they had been used earlier. The origins of the idea are unknown, and glass is very difficult to accurately date. Though reproductions are common, very few original specimens remain, making them a truly significant and valuable find. The rectangular shaped one recovered by Captain Slater is indeed a very rare form, and an amazing find.

The Iberia was a steel hulled freighter, 255 ft long with a 36 ft beam. She was carrying a consignment of dates and coffee for Arnold Cheney & Co. of NY, when she was struck by the 520 ft Cunard luxury passenger liner Umbria in dense fog on November 10, 1888. She sank about 3 miles offshore Southwest of Jones Inlet, where she sits on a sandy bottom in 60 ft of water. The Iberia is a popular dive, being close to shore, shallow in depth, and large in size, making her ideal for divers at all levels. There are many easily identifiable structures on the Iberia among the collapsed wreckage. The engine rises to the shallowest point at around 45 ft, and the prop-shaft can be followed from just behind the engine all the way aft to her steel propeller, making it an ideal reference for navigating the stern portions of the wreck. Forward of the engines, the two massive

boilers rise to around 50 ft, and two deck winches can be found forward of the boilers. The bow section, still intact, is separated from the main wreckage by about 50 ft. Artifacts are not hard to find on the Iberia. The more than 20,000 crates from her cargo of dates can be found by light digging, and the ends of the crates bear the markings of her cargo and its destination. Even the dates, though shriveled, can still be found. Other artifacts recovered include the ships bell and telegraph, portholes, deadeyes, and bottles.

Only a short ride from Jones or Debbs Inlets, the Iberia is a popular dive from many dive boats, visited regularly throughout the dive season. Being so close to shore, it is often a diveable alternative when offshore weather is otherwise prohibitive. Visibility ranges from an average of 15ft, to sometimes as much as 60 ft. It is an ideal dive for divers with all levels of training and experience. For more information on the history of the Iberia, as well as artifact photos and dive reports, visit Captain Dan Berg’s web site www.aquaexplorers.com. Cover photo courtesy of Captain Dan Berg.

Earlier this year, the Long Island Divers Association website was updated with a brand new look and features for enhanced usability. There are many resources for divers, including a complete dive shop, dive boat, and dive club listing for all of Long Island and vicinity, as well as information about LIDA, our events, officer contact information, and membership information and signup. There are also several new features designed to serve the diving community. Our enhanced event listing provides instant access to all upcoming LIDA events as the information becomes available. Our news and photo galleries chronicle past events and provide a record of LIDA activities through the year. Our Event Calendar puts the entire diving community schedule at every divers’ fingertips. This interactive calendar details all events scheduled by our area dive boats, shops, and clubs, allowing you to see a day, week, or month at a glance, along with all the dives and events scheduled. Each item provides basic information about the event, as well as phone and/or web contact information to get more details. The response to this new tool has been overwhelmingly encouraging. In the coming weeks and months, we will continue to expand and enhance the site with new information and functionality, including the ongoing cataloging and documentation of Long Island’s best dive sites. Divers are encouraged to participate by writing up their favorite dive sites and submitting them to us for inclusion in the web site. We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Aaron Hirsh for his continued support in the design of the graphical elements of the web site. His dedication to LIDA has and continues to be steadfast and unsurpassed.

March 19, 2008—Members Meeting

On March 19th, the newly elected Board of Officers for 2008 assumed their posts and presented their initiatives for the upcoming diving season at the March Members Meeting. On hand were representatives from most of Long Island's dive boats, shops and clubs, as well as many local divers and instructors, to discuss the upcoming season. The discussions covered topics that ranged across all diving interests. The officers would like to thank everyone who attended for their time, as well as their ideas and enthusiasm. We will be working very hard in the coming months to take these ideas and act upon them. Complete minutes from the meeting will be made available on the LIDA website.

With the induction of the new Board of Officers for 2008, the end of a 15 year record of official service to LIDA was realized. Janice Raber has been such an integral part of the organization for so long, that it is hard to imagine LIDA without her. Although she has stepped down from her position as an officer, she promises to continue to volunteer when she can. Also stepping down from the board after many years of dedicated service is past President Steve Burke. In recognition of their dedication and service to LIDA, the Board of Officers held a brief Executive Committee Meeting at the beginning of the March Members Meeting, where they voted unanimously to grant them both Honorary Memberships and waive dues in perpetuity. This motion was also extended to include all past LIDA presidents, in recognition of their service. All of the members of LIDA and the diving community in general owe them a debt of gratitude for their dedicated efforts.

March 28-30, 2008—Beneath the Sea

The annual consumer diving show "Beneath the Sea" was held this past weekend at the Meadowlands Exposition Center in Secaucus, NJ. Many familiar faces stopped by the LIDA booth to renew both memberships and acquaintances, and to meet with the many new people who joined and expressed their support for LIDA's work.

LIDA News

The officers would like to thank all the volunteers who worked so hard to make this show the success it was. We would also like to extend our sincere appreciation to Captain Dan Berg, Randi Eisen, Jeff Bachman, Tommy Sorriano, Lee Gorsline, and Bob Auteri, who entrusted us with many of their prized artifacts for display in our booth. We would also like to thank Suzanne and Glenn Rankin for allowing us to show their amazing local dive video: "Colors of the Sea" at the booth. Those who attended the 2007 LIDA Film Festival are sure to remember this spectacular presentation. It easily rivals any tropical presentation, and it was shot completely in the waters of Long Island. Finally, we must thank Bob Auteri, who chaired the BTS Committee, and took responsibility for the preparation and coordination of the show. It's success could not have been achieved without his assistance.

April 19, 2008—Scoutwalk 2008

On Saturday, April 19th, the Long Island Divers Association joined Steve Scigliano, owner of Swim and Scuba in Rockville Centre, in a booth promoting local diving to Boy Scouts and their families at the Scoutwalk 2008 event at Christopher Morley Park in Roslyn, NY. Hundreds of Boy Scouts and their families visited the booth, where we had scuba units they could put on and try out, a large screen TV showing videos of local

diving, and a display of local shipwreck artifacts. The Boy Scout organization took great interest in the opportunities for local diving, and exposing the future generations of potential divers to the local opportunities. Our thanks to Steve Scigliano for organizing the event, as well as to Captain Dan Berg and Adam Altman for the use of their artifacts for our display.

April 22, 2008—Public Safety Seminar

Our April Seminar welcomed Butch Hendrick and Andrea Zaferes from Lifeguard Systems for an interesting and informative presentation on the importance of personal safety in Public Safety diving operations. Many local volunteer divers from fire departments, police scuba teams, and rescue teams joined with local divers at the NUMC Amphitheater in East Meadow, for an interesting and informative discussion of the tools and

trips on the Waterfront Center’s tall ship, the Oyster Sloop Christeen, viewings of other tall ships and the Nantucket Lightship, an “Anything that Floats” race, free kayak trials, live music, and a variety of booths and displays. Our special thanks go to Captain Dan Berg and Adam Altman for the use of their artifacts for our display.

June 7, 2008—Secret Beach Cleanup, Dive, and Barbecue

On Saturday, June 7th, divers gathered in Greenport to clean the shores and dive site of Secret Beach of light trash and refuse. Diver access to the popular shore dive site is currently managed by LIDA, and keeping the site clean for all visitors goes a long way to help keep the site accessible to divers. Following the cleanup, several dives were made and a barbecue sponsored by LIDA was enjoyed by all participants.

June 12, 2008—Diving Long Island’s Best Inshore Wrecks

Our seminar series continued featuring dive boat Captains Dan Berg, Howard Klein, Frank Persico, Bill Reddan, and Chuck Wade presenting their favorite inshore wrecks. The presentation included photos, videos, sketches and stories of dives on many local wrecks suitable for divers at all levels. Our thanks to all the Captains for an enjoyable and informative evening.

techniques used in Public Safety diving operations and a presentation of many valuable tips and tricks that benefit diver safety. Our thanks to Glenn Butler and Ed Smith of Life Support Technologies for hosting this event, as well as Butch and Andrea, for their continued support of LIDA and their commitment to Public Safety diver training and safety.

May 7, 2008—Amazing Local Critters Seminar

Our May Seminar packed the house at the NUMC Amphitheater in East Meadow, as divers came from the tri-state area to hear Marine Biologists Marianne McNamara, Tara Duffy, and the "Fish Guys" Steve Abrams and Bill Chamberlain present the many amazing local critters we have here in our local waters. This fascinating presentation was accompanied by a slideshow that highlighted many beautiful local species, as well as providing a very interesting description of the different types of marine ecosystems that exist in our area. They also presented some very

important information as to how our actions impact the local marine environment, and what each of us can do to help preserve our valuable resources and minimize our impact on the marine environment. Our thanks to Glenn Butler and Ed Smith of Life Support Technologies for hosting this event, as well as Marianne, Tara, Steve, and Bill, whose continued support of LIDA and their commitment to the preservation of the local marine environment are greatly appreciated.

June 1, 2008—The Waterfront Center’s Bay Day

On June 1st, LIDA was joined by Seascapes Dive Center of Syosset, The Historical Diving Society, and the Riverhead Foundation for The Oyster Bay Waterfront Center’s Bay Day festival on Beekman Beach. Participating volunteers set up and staffed a group of displays to promote diving to the public. Also present were author and President of the Underwater Historical Research Society, Adam Grohman, and underwater photographer Paul Mila. The combined booths welcomed hundreds of visitors to see the equipment, artifacts on display, and view the underwater videos playing, while discussing the opportunities for diving with our volunteers. The festival, an annual event, featured a wide variety of fun and interesting activities, including

July 26, 2008—4th Annual Ken & Jean Marie Memorial Dive On Saturday, July 26th LIDA will be sponsoring the 4th Annual Ken and Jean Marie Jastrzebski Memorial Fundraiser Dive at the Ponquogue Bridge. The diving community will once again come together to honor the memory of two very special people who meant so much to so many of us. The passing of the years does little to diminish the pain of their absence, so we gather each year to honor and remember them in the best way that we can. Diving was what they loved, and through diving they showed their love to everyone they met. On this day we dive for Ken and Jean Marie. Potluck BBQ, raffles, and a 50/50 will help raise money for the Jastrzebski "Sink the Ship" fund, to be used for the sinking of a ship on the artificial reef in their memory. Parking permits will be available at no charge for the day. More information will be posted on the Events page of the LIDA website as it becomes available, but be sure to save the date for this important and enjoyable event.

August 2, 2008—Annual Aquawoman Dive The annual AquaWoman dive started essentially as a dare. Twenty-six years ago, now charter member of the Woman Divers Hall of Fame and then Vice President of the Long Island Divers Association, Edith Hoffman, was challenged by Captain Steve Belinda of the Wahoo, to find other women capable of "real wreck diving". Edith, an extraordinarily competent woman wreck diver, knew that there were many other woman divers like her. The dive spots filled quickly with women from six states, including commercial divers, homemakers, and even a Radio City Rockette. These woman dove the U.S.S. San Diego that day and began a tradition that continues today. This year’s dive will feature a trip to the Stolt Dagali. The operating depth of the dive is from 60 ft-130 ft, making this an ideal site for both novice and experienced divers. The Stolt Dagali was a tanker carrying a load of vegetable oil from Philadelphia to Newark, when she was sliced in two by the passenger liner Shalom at 2 am in November, 1964. While the forward two thirds of the ship stayed afloat, the stern sank to the ocean floor, where she rests today.

We will set sail aboard the dive boat Jeanne II with Captain Bill Reddan and his crew out of Sheepshead Bay, NY. Boarding is by 5:30 AM, departure time is 6:00 AM. The cost for this two-tank dive is $95.00 per diver, and includes a free T-shirt or tank top. Bring along something to put on the barbeque or other culinary delight to share. Soft drinks will be supplied by LIDA. A post-dive party will be held at the dock when the Jeanne II returns. LIDA will supply the soft drinks and paper goods, participants should bring a snack or dish to share. All are invited to join us in welcoming the divers home. For more information, view the flyer on the Events page of the LIDA website at www.lidaonline.com, or visit the Aquawoman website at www.aquawoman.org. August 26, 2008—Long Island’s Best Offshore Wrecks On Tuesday, August 26th at 8PM, our local dive boat captains return to the NUMC Amphitheater to present the sequel to our June seminar. This presentation will highlight some of the great offshore wrecks that put Long Island up front and stage center in the spotlight of the wreck diving community. The captains will show video, photos, and sketches of a variety of wreck sites, and will tell us some of their stories about their trips. Save the date for this presentation, this is one you won’t want to miss. FREE to LIDA members, $5.00 for all others. Please note, vehicles parked in the NUMC parking facility are subject to parking fees, currently a maximum of $5.25 to closing. RSVP to Adam Altman at [email protected] is required to reserve your space. Additional information and flyer will be available on the events page of the LIDA website at www.lidaonline.com. The 2008 LIDA Officers

Bill Pfeiffer—President Although Bill is a relatively new face to LIDA, he is certainly no stranger to the local diving community. For over 30 years Bill has been exploring the beaches and wrecks of Long Island, as well as diving destinations throughout the world. He was exposed to the water early, when he starting snorkeling with his brother at the age of 8. Inspired by television shows like Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Sea Hunt and Flipper, he developed a fascination with the underwater world and spent much of his childhood in the water. First certified in 1978 while serving with the United States Marine Corps, he began diving the shores of North Carolina near his Marine base of Camp Lejeune. Once back home on Long Island, he began to dive our local beaches and wrecks regularly. Bill continues to dive almost every weekend, and enjoys all types of diving, from beach dives to wreck dives, spearfishing and artifact hunting. Currently certified through Advanced Nitrox and Decompression Procedures as well as a variety of diving specialties, Bill is also currently working towards his Trimix certification. A NAUI instructor, Bill runs Island Diving, an independent diving instructional facility. Bill also owns and runs Predator Performance, specializing in building and maintaining custom motorcycles. He is a volunteer firefighter, EMT, and rescue/public safety diver for the Nesconset Fire Department. Bill’s goal in volunteering with LIDA is to promote and expand diving activities on Long Island. He hopes to do this by sponsoring a wide variety of diving

activities, and by working with the local dive shops, boats, and clubs to promote their evens and activities. Randi Eisen—Executive Vice President Few, if any, who are involved in the local diving community are not familiar with Randi and her many accomplishments. YMCA and PADI certified on Long Island in 1984, she has accumulated over 3000 dives in her twenty four years of diving, most of them right here on the shipwrecks off our local shores. She is both a NAUI and TDI Technical Instructor, one of the few on Long Island certified to teach Advanced Trimix, and her training programs are highly regarded as being among the best technical diver training available in the area. Randi is also an NACD certified Full Cave Diver, and enjoys occasional trips to Mexico to dive the amazing underwater caves in the Yucatan Peninsula. She also dabbles in underwater photography, but her primary passion is wreck diving, and she takes that passion seriously. In addition to regular weekly charters on local dive boats throughout the diving season, she runs several diving trips a year to wrecks off Massachusetts, New Jersey, and North Carolina. Her other underwater passion is diving with large animals, which has brought her to exotic destinations such as Alaska to dive with whales, the Maldives to dive with the great Rays, and the Galapagos for amazing experiences with giant Sea Turtles. Despite her extensive travels, it is Long Island wreck diving that calls her home, and remains the focus of her diving. With her schedule of over a hundred dives per year, it would be hard to imagine that Randi could make time for volunteer service to the diving community, yet, like her diving career, she is heavily immersed, and works tirelessly to support and promote local diving. In addition to her many years of service as Executive Vice President of LIDA, she is a Senior Director of Beneath the Sea, a co-founder and Vice President of Wrecksploration Divers, and Vice President of Programs for the Broadway Divers dive club. Though she shies away from the public eye, she is critical to the operations of each of these organizations and never hesitates to give generously of her time and expertise. When she is not diving, Randi is a Cell Biology Researcher for the State University of New York at the Downstate Medical Center in Brooklyn. Her husband, Steve Eisen, is an active volunteer for LIDA and Beneath the Sea, and an avid local wreck diver.

Barry Lipsky – Vice President Barry’s love for diving is a passion that has spanned decades. Never content to simply watch others, Barry’s drive to “dive in” himself got him hooked on diving early on. Most of all, he enjoys the feeling of visiting a part of our world that relatively few have ever seen. First certified by YMCA in 1968, Barry brings forty years and over 1000 dives of experience to his position as Vice President of LIDA. An avid local diver, Barry enjoys both wreck and shore diving, and does both as often as he can. A multi-disciplined diving instructor, Barry teaches both recreational and Public Safety diving programs. He holds instructor certification from NAUI and ACUC, as well as Lifeguard Systems as a Public Safety Diving and Surface Ice Rescue Instructor. Volunteer service is not something new to Barry. He is an Emergency Medical Technician and Certified First Responder for the Bayport Fire Department, and serves as the Lieutenant for the Bayport Fire Department Water Rescue Team. He also volunteers for the Boy Scouts and leads diver training programs annually at the Florida National High Adventure Sea Base scuba training facility for the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America in Islamorada, Florida. Barry is the owner and President of Lipsky Enterprises, a 32 year old General Contracting business dedicated to constructing buildings to last for generations into the future. In the off season, Barry is also an avid skier and instructor with the Professional Ski Instructors of America (PSIA).

Karl Kelso—Treasurer With his easygoing nature and contagious laugh, it can be easy to overlook the fact that Karl has a very serious side to his personality. He is certainly very serious about diving and his passion for local wreck diving. Certified as a PADI Open Water Diver in 2001, Karl quickly fell in love with the sport, and wasted no time building his skills and experience. Through dedication and hundreds of local dives, he has worked his way up to TDI Advanced Trimix certification, and he continues to dive the local wrecks as often as he can. Determined to give back what he has received, he has been working towards his Instructor certification, and recently earned his NAUI Assistant Instructor rating. He takes great personal pleasure in working with new divers to help them master their skills and shares in their enthusiasm when they finally become divers, reliving his own excitement through their experiences on every training dive. Karl has given LIDA many years of dedicated service. He served two years as Secretary, and this year is beginning his third term as Treasurer. He also was the Director for the Film Festival for two years. His enthusiasm and positive attitude are only surpassed by his commitment to promoting local diving, and his willingness to do anything in his power to share his love for the sport. In addition to local wreck diving, Karl enjoys Caribbean underwater photography. He tries to travel to the tropics via land or cruise at least once a year, but his passion for local wreck diving always brings him home to Long Island. Karl is an Information Technology MIS Manager and Product Manager, currently between jobs.

Adam Altman—Secretary Adam first came to LIDA in 2004 in attempt to promote the idea of sinking a MARAD vessel as an artificial reef in local waters. He began volunteering as the LIDA delegate to the Moriches Offshore Reef Fund. While his service to LIDA expanded over the years, he continues to work closely with the DEC and the reefing community towards that personal goal. He is currently serving his third consecutive term as Secretary. First certified on Long Island in 1986, Adam became instantly hooked after his first wreck dive, and fast became a fixture in the local wreck diving community. He worked from 1988 to 1992 as a crew member on the Sea Hunter III, and began working on the Eagle’s Nest in 1996. He has over 20 diving certifications and specialties through Advanced Trimix, and has logged over 2000 dives. He is a US Coast Guard licensed Captain with a 100 Ton Near Coastal Master’s rating, and continues to work as a crew member on the Eagle’s Nest, where you will find him diving most weekends from April thru November. Adam began teaching diving in 1998, and has worked with hundreds of recreational and technical diving students. He currently focuses his teaching on Advanced Nitrox, Decompression Procedures, and Advanced Wreck Diving programs as a TDI Technical Diving Instructor. In the off season, Adam enjoys keeping his technical skills sharp by cave diving in Florida and Mexico. He holds Full Cave certifications from NACD and NSS-CDS, and Technical Cave Diver certification from IANTD. He is also a co-founder and President of Wrecksploration Divers, a non-profit organization dedicated to the search and identification of undiscovered shipwrecks. When he is dry, you will most often find him behind a computer screen. He works as a Software Designer and Engineer for CA in Islandia in their Research and Development division.

Bob Auteri—Chairman of the Board of Directors Bob is that rare type of person that when you first meet him, you leave feeling like you have known him for years. His outgoing personality mixes with a raw enthusiasm for the sport of scuba diving that endears him to divers of all levels of skill and experience. An Engineer by trade, Bob is the owner of Splice Technologies, providing innovative design and manufacturing of fiber optic components to the telecommunications industry. Serving as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of LIDA is only the most recent of his many years of dedicated service to the organization and the diving community at large. In addition to being a co-founder of LIDA, he served two years as Vice President of LIDA and was the Program Director of the annual Film Festival for its first ten consecutive years. In our 27 year history, Bob’s service has spanned the entire existence of the organization. First introduced to the underwater world in 1962, Bob first began his diving career in earnest in the late 70s, diving several times a week, day and night, from beaches and boats across Long Island. His love of diving is fueled by a passion for underwater archaeology, artifact collection, and shipwreck research that are only rivaled by his infatuation for history, especially of Long Island. Indeed true to this calling, he has chronicled LIDA history since its inception, and continues to be our most important reference for information about our own past events and activities. His knowledge of local diving and maritime history make him an invaluable resource for any research regarding local diving, and he is often able to provide

documentation and artifacts from wrecks that many have forgotten even exist. Despite his passion for the historical aspects of shipwreck research, what draws him most to the sport is the friendships he has made along the way. Though the details of many of his diving adventures may become sketchy over time, he never forgets the people with whom he has shared those many great times over his many years of diving.
