From the Pastor: Liturgy of the Hours, the Prayer of the Church

As you know by now the most important prayer or liturgy of the Church is Holy Mass.

The prayer which immediately follows the Mass and which is of next importance is

the Liturgy of the Hours. What is the Liturgy of the Hours?

The Liturgy of the Hours is the constant prayer of the Church. In the Roman Rite it

consists of seven times of prayer a day when the clergy, religious communities, and

lay faithful stop their daily activity and offer petition, give thanks, and proclaim praise

to God for His work in humanity. Just as our lungs breath air constantly, so too does

the Church breathe constant prayer to God who is the real air we must breath, our very

life source.

These seven times of prayer consist mostly of the Psalms, some of which are older

than 3000 years old. Also these times of prayer consist of other scripture readings and

writings of the saints or spiritual authors who inspire the Church to dive more deeply

into who God is.

There are mainly two pinnacle hours: Morning Prayer (Lauds) and Evening Prayer

(Vespers). All the Christian people are encouraged to pray at least these two hours as

often as they are able, whereas priests, deacons, and religious brothers and sisters

make a promise to pray these hours daily.

If you are interested in joining in the prayer of the Church, you can easily find the app

called ‘iBreviary’ on Apple or Android devices for free. The app updates every day

with the prayers for each feast and day. Or, if you like the simplicity of a physical

book, you can order what is called the ‘Christian Prayer: the Liturgy of the Hours.’

This book is the one volume addition which includes Morning, Evening, and Night

Prayers. It also comes with a brochure of which pages to use according to each day of

the year.

Starting on January 14th at St. Joseph’s in Killdeer we will have Vespers for all to join

in. Books will be provided. Come pray the same psalms that Jesus prayed, the prayers

of the Church.

Candle Light Vigil: The Badlands Right to Life Candle Light Vigil will be held on Friday, January 22, 2021 4:30-6:00 PM. NORTH DAKOTA MARCH FOR LIFE

A group of dedicated pro-life people and organizations have come together to organize a powerful pro-life event at the state capital on January 29, 2021, for all those unable to travel to DC to participate in the national March for Life. Download the Real Presence Radio app to listen to the rally either in-person or remotely. Use the hashtag #NDMarchforLife to share your photos on social media. SCHEDULE 11:00 am: Mass at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, celebrant Bishop David Kagan Immediately following: March from local churches to the capitol 12:30 pm-1:00 pm: Rally with program at the capitol steps PARTICIPATE IN-PERSON The North Dakota March for Life will take place at the state capitol in Bismarck. The center piece of the rally will be a moment of silence in recognition of the 62 million lives lost to abortion. Participants will stand 6 feet apart across the capitol grounds, with masks on, in silence for those who will never be heard. PARTICIPATE ONLINE This event will be streamed on Real Presence Radio, allowing participation across the listening area. Individuals can participate in business setting, public school setting, or at home. The University of Mary will provide educational materials for use in school or at home.
