GOOOOAAAALLLL! Whether you call it soccer or football, the fever is in full force. Include me in the millions that have become completely absorbed in the World Cup. It’s the most attention I’ve paid to televised sports (only because I watch USC football live and in person) since the 2006 Cup.

The day after watching the U.S. storm back to tie with Slovenia, I witnessed an unusual sight at my neighborhood middle school in San Clemente. As I approached the track to begin my morning run, to my surprise I found a group of twenty or so young men and women playing a friendly pick-up game of soccer. Remembering I had softball cleats in the car, I put them on and joined the game.

I had a blast playing the sport I had not attempted in nearly 15 years. Although my quads were still paying the price almost two days later, it was great being back on a soccer field again. And this fall, my son will experience his first season of AYSO. The tradition continues.

Performance Motorsports in San Juan Capistrano is revving up our July issue. The Yamaha powersports dealership is debuting their latest inventory of bikes and their new digs at a Grand Re-Opening celebration on Saturday, July 10th. Be sure to check it out!

Have you tried every diet out there or at least it feels like it? With summer around the corner, you’re wondering what your game plan is to finally get this weight off your body?

I can recall many, many years of making the same unfufilled promise to myself. I’d tell my-self, “This year I’m going to go on a special diet, I will exercise, and I will lose the weight—and I will keep it off.”

On January 2nd, I’d launch into the latest diet craze involving starving, or only eating certain foods, or taking dozens of supplement pills every day, or sometimes all three. It was usually some sort of routine that was sheer punishment!

Sure enough, I’d lose weight, but then I’d start to feel stressed and oppressed by the strict regi-men and would go back to my good old friend—food. It was positively demoralizing each time that I would have to start all over with a new diet and routine. Does any of this sound familiar?

I’ve taken off 92 pounds and have kept it off for more than five years. I have never felt better!

By next year, you too could be just like the many Hungry Heart clients who are at their goal weights and living healthy lifestyles, not because they’re supposed to, or because it’s prescribed by the latest diet, but because they genuinely want to.

Hungry Heart clients no longer deal with the internal struggle and self-sabotage of diet-ing and binging, or make poor food choices. They’ve learned to eat when they’re hungry, stop when they’re satisfied, and handle life and their emotions completely independently.

We don’t offer a quick fix or a miracle cure. Our proven system of individual behavioral counseling, hypnotherapy and nutrition coun-seling provides a permanent solution to yo-yo dieting, binge eating, overeating, and poor food choices.

Through our caring approach, clients make slow, steady changes to their thought pro-cesses. This changes how they respond to life, what comes into their lives, and, ultimately, the way they approach food.

diet/bingebreak free of the

I tend to overeat certain types of food.

Once I have a bite of certain foods, my eating may go out of control.

I sometimes worry that I won’t get enough to eat or I’ll never stop eating.

Sometimes the only way to make cravings go away is to eat whatever I am thinking about.

I have gone to unusual lengths to get the food I’m craving.

I overeat when I’m feeling emotions, such as anger, depression, fatigue or looking for comfort or reward.

Many days, I head straight for the refrigerator after work, school, or when I get home from my day’s activities.

I’ve noticed I eat when I’m bored.

For no reason, I will sometimes find that I am extremely hungry.

I am uncomfortable expressing or sharing my feelings.

I would like to be a stronger, more confident person.

After I lose weight and receive positive attention, I will start regaining the weight.

I want to lose weight to please people who are important in my life.

I’m reaching the point where I’m afraid thatI will never lose my excess weight.

I feel bad about my weight whichmakes me feel like a failure.

get your motor runnin’If you’re a motorcycle enthusiast and you haven’t heard the Weseloh name by now, you’ve probably been asleep at the handlebars. This venerable

local family has been at the forefront of all things motorized in Southern California for more than 70 years.

PictUred Above: The roAd StAr SiLverAdo S is ready for the long haul and doesn’t mind letting everyone notice this fact. Packed with floating floorboards, a tall windscreen, passenger backrest as well as hard-shell sidebags, the Silverado is comfortable and offers plenty loading capacity. The extra load is properly dealt with tons of torque and a harmonious rumble provided by the 102-cubic-inch V-twin engine powering the two cruisers.

C.B. Weseloh started his enterprise in the early 1920’s with a modest gas sta-tion and towing service. He parlayed his success into a string of automobile dealerships over the next 50 years. C.B.’s son, Ben, took over operations in the 50’s and kept the engine run-ning; his Carlsbad “Car Country” Chevrolet dealership was established in 1976 and still thrives today.

Ben Weseloh decided to try his hand in the motorcycle business back in 2001 and Performance Motorsports was born. As it turns out, the tim-ing was spot on with the increase in popularity of motorcycle riding as a lifestyle choice. This endeavor soon blossomed into a full-line powersport destination. Ben’s son, Peter, and son-in-law, Tim Aldrich, have since taken the helm allowing Ben Weseloh to focus on his other interests.

Performance Motorsports has revved up operations and relocated to a wide-open showroom in the his-toric town of San Juan Capistrano. The new location exclusively offers Yamaha products including the full line of Yamaha motorcycles, gear, service and accessories. General Manager Bernie Krause, Parts and Service Manager Greg Shepard, Sales Manager Bill Newman and the entire staff are available to assist you in all your powersports needs.

Yamaha’s Star Series cruisers and roadsters are designed to directly compete with custom road bikes. Yamaha outfits its Star Series line with standard accessories that the competition only offers as “after-market.” These upgrades alone make the Yamaha brand of motor-cycles easily personalized to suit your individual preferences. This philosophy is echoed in Yamaha’s slogan: “We build it. You make it your own.” Exceptional products, combined with friendly service from the Performance Motorsports fam-ily, translates into an experience to remember.

Performance Motorsports also of-fers a wide range of recreational vehicles and support equipment, including off-road and dual sport motorcycles, sport/utility ATV’s, side-by-sides and generators. They also maintain an expansive selection of pre-owned inventory. The parts and service department supports all products in-house and online. In ad-dition, the website features product highlights, fuel and mileage calcula-tors and riding maps to great local riding areas.

Performance Motorsports is hosting a huge grAnd re-oPening CeLebrA-Tion for the entire com-

munity on July 10th from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. All adventurous men, women and children are encouraged to stop by. The event will feature vendors, music, raffles, photo opportunities with umbrella girls and a tasty bar-beque. Check out a 1974 Yamaha OW13 factory works bike (one of only three in the world), a 1975 Yamaha YZ 360B (first production monoshock motorcycle) and an AMA Yamaha R1 Superbike.

A Factory Yamaha Race mechanic and an AMA Superbike Race Man-ager will be on hand at the Grand Re-Opening to answer all of your questions. They will also be running a dyno (at cost) for a horsepower shoot-out contest and trophies and prizes will be awarded to all bike classes. Best of all, the entire Perfor-mance Motorsports’ bike inventory will be on sale with many discount-ed below invoice (July 10th only)! Parts and accessories will be on sale up to 70% off. If you hear the call of the open road, love the wind in your face and don’t mind a free hot dog on a summer afternoon, round up the family and come on down!

Question: I get moody sometimes so my friends think I may be “Bipolar.” What does Bipolar mean? —angela, san clemente

ross meDical: Bipolar disorder, also known as manic depression, is a mental health problem that causes changes in mood. Sometimes you may feel excessively elated, impulsive, irritable, or irrational (called mania) or hypomanic (a milder form of mania). Other times you may feel excessively sad (called major depression). Symptoms of mania may include: decreased need for sleep, restlessness, talking excessively, racing thoughts, short attention span, inappropriate spending sprees or sexual activity. During a manic episode, your moods can change rapidly from euphoria to depression or irritability. Bipolar disorder can make it hard to do a good job at work or school, have relationships with friends and family, and it even increases the risk of suicide if it is not treated or treated incorrectly. There is no test that can diagnose bipolar disorder. Instead, the diagnosis is based upon a medical and psychiatric history and a physical examination. Laboratory testing may be performed to rule out other diagnoses. Treatment of mania focuses on managing symptoms and keeping you safe. Medicines are the main treatment for mania, and a number of medicines are available. —Pedro carrillo, m.D.

Question: What do I need to ask my doctor before traveling to another country? —todd, san clemente

ross meDical: It’s a good idea to consult with your doctor before you travel. Depending on the destination, it would be wise to visit your doctor at least 6 weeks before leaving. You may need certain vaccines such as Hepatitis A, Typhoid or Yellow Fever, as well as to update your Tetanus, Measles, Mumps and Rubella. Additionally, you should carry a few extra days of your regular prescription medications, and ask your doctor about certain antibiotics for traveler’s diarrhea. To lower your risk of traveler’s diarrhea, eat only well cooked foods and drink bottled water. Avoid ice cubes, foods from street vendors, as well as salads and fruits that may have been washed in dirty water. If you are going to a country with risk of malaria, your doctor can give you medication which is started before leaving, and taken for four weeks after returning. However, the biggest risk while traveling is not illness, but actually accidents and injuries, so always be alert. More info can be found at www.cdc.gov. —Karl gebhard, m.D.

The San Clemente Ocean Festival Board of Directors, a non-profit organization con-sisting of members of the community, an-nounced that this year’s two-day celebration is expected to draw over 50,000 people to their “Spanish City by the Sea.”

Originating in 1977 as a modest competi-tive swimming, surfing and running contest between Southern California lifeguards; the event evolved to include many family activi-ties and athletic competitions such as SUP (Stand Up Paddleboard) and Ocean Kayak-ing, resulting in a spectacular weekend ocean celebration featuring water sports for all ages and abilities. On both days, the action begins at 7:30 a.m. with the City Lifeguards’ Pancake Breakfast. Appropriate for this small beach town known for its world class surfing, histor-ic “Woodies” (popular 40’s and 50’s station wagons) will be on display at the pier, enticing all to stroll the wooden planks above the roll-ing surf. An invitational surf and ocean-related Art Show will be held on the grassy area over-looking the pier. The Children’s Pavilion will feature games, face painting, and entertain-ment such as Jiu Jitsu and Hula performanc-es, a “Mad Science” demonstration, Mermaid

Parade and live music. Planned for Saturday is a Dolphin Dash Kid’s Beach Run for ages 4 to 12; and on both days there will be fishing derbies - for kids on Saturday and for all ages on Sunday.

On Saturday, Waterman and Waterwoman contests will begin, continuing to the follow-ing day. This intense athletic competition draws hundreds of spectators, with the dory boat races being the most popular. Also planned for Saturday is the “Grom’s Rule” Surf Contest for ages 14 and under, Biathlon (1k Swim, 5K Beach Run), 10k Distance Paddle Race (Paddleboard, SUP & Ski), 2k Surf Ski/Ocean Kayak Race, and several other races and relays. Saturday’s finale event is a family beach party with barbeque dinners for sale and live entertainment beginning at 6:00 p.m.

The Sand Sculpting Contest kicks off Sun-day’s activities. A maximum of twenty-five, 10-person teams will vie for prizes in several categories. Athletic competitions on Sunday include the SUP Surfing Championships, Body Surfing Championships, 5K Beach Run, One Mile Ocean Swim, Swim-Run-SUP and the Splash & Dash.

Sunday’s Rubber Duck Race has become an Ocean Festival highlight. Prizes will be awarded for those ducks that first bob from their ocean starting points to the finish line on the sand.

Take advantage of a hassle-free shuttle service that will be available throughout the Ocean Festival. This complimentary offering will run to and from San Clemente High School {700 Avenida Pico} and the Municipal Pier.

Each year, a portion of the proceeds from the Festival provides funds for worthy local organizations and scholarships for students. Funds have been granted to the Junior Life Guard program, California State Lifeguards, The Boys & Girls Club, Ocean Institute and other charities.

2 / LagUna BeachThe fireworks show in Laguna Beach will be launched from Monument Point in Heisler Park. For a spectacular show over the Pacific, stake a spot early at Main Beach. The display starts at dusk.

3 / LagUna nigUeLLaguna Niguel will offer something for everyone this Independence Day. The 20th Anniversary celebration includes a carnival from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Crown Valley Community Park (29751 Crown Valley Parkway) that will include games and food booths. From 6-8 p.m., the City will host a concert featuring variety show band, The Zippers, at the Crown Valley Park Amphitheater. At 8:15 p.m., stretch your legs and join the 3/4 mile community walk from the amphitheater to the Laguna Niguel Regional Park where the fireworks will begin at 9:00 p.m. For more information on Laguna Niguel’s July 4th celebration, call 949.425.5100.

1 / dana PointDon’t miss one of South Orange County’s best aerial fireworks displays. Gather family and friends, tune your radio to KSBR 88.5FM and look toward the skies over Doheny State Beach. Dana Point’s Fireworks Extravaganza begins at 9:00 p.m. along with a synchronized musical score.

Avoid the traffic jam. Folks from all over Southern California flock to the Harbor each year for this summer tradition. Local residents are encouraged to bike or walk to their favorite viewing spot. Free shuttle buses will make round trips from Dana Hills High School to the Harbor bus stop at the corner of Dana Point Harbor Dr. and Golden Lantern from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. The last shuttle will leave the Harbor at 11:30 p.m. and buses will not be running during the show. Plan ahead; parking lots at Doheny State Beach and Dana Point Harbor fill up very early and vehicle access to the harbor closes at 7:30 p.m. Harbor access will reopen after the fireworks show traffic has cleared (approx. 10:30 p.m.).

4 / san cLementeAt 9:00 p.m., the City will showcase its annual fireworks display from the Municipal Pier. The end of the Pier will close at noon on July 3rd for preliminary preparation and the entire Pier will close on the 4th at 8:00 a.m. and remain closed for the entire day. The Fisherman’s Restaurant will continue to be accessible.

Ocean access surrounding the Pier and access under the Pier will be prohibited during the show. It is critical that surfers, body borders and swimmers remain 1,000 feet away from the end of the Pier for safety reasons.

To avoid traffic problems, San Clemente Police Services will be restricting vehicular traffic between approximately 7:00 and 10:00 p.m. in the entire lower Pier Bowl area adjacent to the Pier. The lower Pier Bowl will be closed from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. The Municipal Beach and Pier will be closed to the public after the fireworks display until the following morning of Monday, July 5th. Be sure to visit the City’s website (www.san-clemente.org) for information on street closures and traffic assistance in and out of the area.

5 / san JUan caPistranoFor a 4th full of family fun and festivities, make your way to the San Juan Capistrano Sports Park located at 25925 Camino Del Avion. From 3 to 9:30 p.m., mechanical rides, bounce houses for the kids, popular family games and entertainment for all ages await. The Hodads will take the stage playing Classic Rock beginning at 6 p.m. In addition to great entertainment, delicious eats and treats of all kinds will be available for purchase. Capping off the evening is a spectacular fireworks display at 9:00 p.m.

Feel free to bring lawn chairs & blankets. Individual tickets and specially priced wristbands may be purchased for all rides and bouncers. Plenty of free parking will be available in the Sports Park and on Camino Del Avion. For the safety of others, no personal fireworks, barbecues, bikes or pets will be allowed. For more information on San Juan Capistrano’s 4th of July celebration, call 949.493.5911.

L O C A L M U S i C

Q: what are your thoughtsabout the Coach house and the upcoming show?A: I guess I can say that I’m a regular there because I’ve played the Coach House so many times. The audience is always receptive and somewhat wild at times. The sound system is good and the stage is just big enough to be able to move around and enjoy a concert-like at-mosphere in a small club. I look forward to working there this year as well.

Q: how has fan reaction been over the latest tour? A: The fans’ reaction to the latest tour has been extremely receptive. I’m amazed that we get a warm reception in every place we go. It’s good; it makes my life worthwhile and I really appreciate it.

Q: what is your favorite Rock decade and why?A: I’d say that it would be the late 60’s/ear-ly 70’s. That time period was filled with many music advances. People like Hendrix, Bad Company, Sly and the Family Stone were making headway into nuances. There were a lot of great festivals like Monterey and Woodstock. It was probably the heyday of Rock. I think that that’s when Rock reached its peak and it hasn’t been the same since. It set the template for the future.

Q: what do you think your lasting contribution to the music community has been?A: I’m not sure what my lasting contribution has been. It’s amazing for me to think that way, but I’m still here, still performing nearly into my 70’s. I’m trying to stay constant and trying to provide the public with good music.

Q: what was it like knocking the Beatles off the top spot on the charts?A: I thought at the time that somebody had to do it and it just happened to be us. Back then, the Beatles had constantly been at the top of the charts. People from the mu-sic world were saying that somebody else needed a chance. We did it with “House of the Rising Sun.” I guess it was quite an event. I remember doing a TV show and there was a screen separating the production crew from the performers. One time we were getting ready in front of the camera to do a take. The Beatles were behind the screen singing along to “House of the Rising Sun” with dirty lyrics that they’d made up, trying to throw us off. It was all in good fun. It made me realize that they acknowledged the fact that we had knocked them off, but they had a good sense of humor about it. Not too long after that things changed, but we were all friends at some point.

Q: what other artistic endeavors might the public soon be enjoying from you? (art, books, new music?)A: Recently I’ve been down to New Or-leans recording for my new album which will be released in 2011. There will be a taste of the new album in the form of the song called “Invitation to the White House (It Was A Dream)” which will be available from my website (www.ericburdon.com) and through all of the favorite websites for music downloads. I also have a new live album called Received and Understood: Live at Herzberg which will be available during my tour this year and also online.

Friday, July 16th ERIC BuRdON &

ThE NEw ANImALS will perform at the Coach House with opening group, the Parker

Macy Blues Band. Burdon is best known as the powerful

Blues-Rock lead singer for the Animals, whose hits include the British Invasion classics: “House

of the Rising Sun,” “We Gotta Get Out Of This Place,” “Don’t

Bring Me Down,” “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” and “It’s My Life.” Burdon took a few minutes

to discuss his place in Rock history, knocking the Beatles off the charts and his current tour.

Buono Pizzas and Pastas offers far more than their name would suggest. With authentic Italian dishes on the menu like Chicken Monte Carlo and Veal Sorrentino, there’s no surprise that Buono’s has been going strong since 2004.

This casually-appointed San Clemente ristorante serves a wide variety of freshly prepared items that make it attractive to businessmen for lunch, couples on a date or families with a range of tastes and appetites.

Start with the pizza and customize your pie by choosing from 20 different toppings and five sizes. Owner Gerardo Barrera has also created ten specialty temptations that will expand your family’s world of pizza possibilities with toppings like Garlic Shrimp and Pesto Chicken.

Pasta is available in a multitude of preparations. Select from staples like spaghetti and lasagne or move up the culinary chain to Fettuccini Carbonara, Baked Ziti and linguini with clams. For those with truly discriminating palates, there are 24 veal, chicken and seafood entrees that rival dishes from the finest kitchens in the county. Chef Barrera is equally adept at preparing Veal Piccata, Chicken Tequila Fusilli and Halibut Limon.

Preparation begins early each day for Gerardo and his wife, Ana, when they make the dough for their bread, sandwiches and pizza. The dressings, sauces and soups are also made fresh daily and Ana keeps close watch on her guests’ satisfaction by being part of the serving staff.

The portions are generous and the prices are very reasonable. Dinner entrees range from just eight to twenty-four dollars. With tempting aromas emanating from the kitchen, good luck choosing just one dish from the vast menu.

Check out Buono’s exceptional specials during the week. On Mondays and Tuesdays, kids eat free (ages 12 and under with 1 adult per child) and on Wednesdays, enjoy all-you-can-eat spaghetti for only $8.95. Don’t have time to cook? Take advantage of Buono’s free delivery to San Clemente and Capistrano Beach.

Buono Pizzas and Pastas is located on the corner of Pico and Presidio, across from San Clemente High School. The restaurant serves wine and beer and the entire menu is available for take-out, delivery or catering. The restaurant is open daily for lunch and dinner from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.
