LOCALCOVER STORY

Founded in 2003 and coming into the 10th an-niversary of its first graduating class, JSerra has established itself within South Orange County as an exceptional academic institution. Each year JSerra’s dedicated staff and faculty look for new ways to innovate the learning process, continu-ally increasing its competitive edge in the class-room, out on the field, and after graduation.

Starting this fall, JSerra’s Artist-in-Residence program will officially join the already impressive collection of professional magnet programs, bringing the total to five: Medical, Business, Engineering, Law, and now Arts. Students can choose either the Visual or Performing Arts track and specialize in their respective area of interest, such as theater, dance, choir, instru-mental, and more. The new status as a magnet will help grow the arts program even further, especially after such a successful 2014 -15 year full of awards and recognitions, including seven Gold Key Awards, two national 2015 Scholastic Arts & Writing Awards, top 10 vocalist for OC’s Artist of the Year, and 121 winning pieces in the Imagination Celebration and the Laguna Beach Art Festival (the most in the county).

This summer also saw the launch of a brand new middle school program called Lion Engage, a hands-on summer camp that allowed students entering grades 6-8 to dive into experiential learning. Participants had the option of choos-ing up to four different camps over the course of two weeks, such as medical and engineering, business, law, guitar, studio art, film/TV, vocal performance, theater, and more. The program was a huge success with over 120 campers from more than 30 different middle schools.

JSerra’s Athletic Department has earned its own reputation for excellence. The impres-sive on-campus facilities are among the best in

the country and feature a 2,000-seat gym, an Olympic-class aquatics center, lacrosse, baseball, soccer, softball, and football fields, tennis courts, track, sand volley-ball courts, and an expansive, multi-use fitness center. Student athletes can compete at the top of their game with access to first-rate equipment and the support of a dedicated coaching staff. Varsity football coach Jim Hartigan and girls swim coach Kevin Clements both earned titles as 2015 Coach of the Year. Var-sity baseball was ranked number one in the state and num-ber three in the country, and athletics as a whole made several CIF play off appearances, won Trinity League cham-pionships, and made school history in various sports.

The academic, athletic, and artistic achievements are something to applaud, and JSerra attributes its success to its core values. “All of our efforts are geared toward nurturing the charac-ter and cultivating the faith of our young women and men,” asserts Headmaster Rich Meyer. “Our ultimate success will be measured by the kinds of fathers, mothers, and citizens they become.” With an impressive 85% AP pass rate for 2015,

rising SAT and ACT scores, and 80% of students playing a sport, it might be difficult to imagine your typical JSerra student having time for much else. However, the school offered two additional mission trips to Peru because of demand (ap-proximately 85 students served abroad), the

campus ministry office offered ten retreats which had the most participants

in school history, and teach-ers and students came to-

gether to form disciple-ship groups and identity formation discussions in order to meet the growing demand for character-building in our society.

Needless to say, JSerra Catholic High School

has much to celebrate this year. To top it off, the

patron of the school, Junipero Serra - a Franciscan friar, supporter

of education, and founder of California - will be canonized a saint by Pope Francis during his visit to the U.S. in September. As the school continues to provide the very best in Catholic high school education, it will be exciting to see where it goes next.

Nurture with care. Teach with creativity. Em-brace life. Treasure faith. These are the guiding principles that shape St. Anne School in Laguna Niguel. St. Anne School is a positive, nurtur-ing, independent Catholic school where chil-dren are guided toward intelligent, responsible adulthood through creative teaching, a culture of caring, and a commitment to fully develop-ing each student in mind, body, and spirit.

St. Anne School awakens a passion for learn-ing in students with stimulating, engaging, and rigorous academics. It is an intimate learning environment with ideal student/teacher ratios, where each student receives personal atten-tion. The school uses the latest, proven teaching methods, curricula, and technology—combining techniques that make learning fun with a sweep-ing range of academic studies. St. Anne School students become curious, confident, and well–prepared for a life of learning and leadership.

St. Anne School sparks each student’s imagi-nation and interests with a diverse offering of enriching activities. At St. Anne School, stu-

dents develop their talents through a wealth of extracurricular and scholastic activities. They can play sports, learn new skills, and travel to fascinating places. They can even put their imaginations to work solving actual world problems. There’s something to engage every inquisitive mind both in and outside the class-room. St. Anne believes children who explore their interests are more comfortable with them-selves and the world around them. Children who are well-rounded become adults who are well-informed. Ultimately they are more suc-cessful in life. For St. Anne School, that’s the purpose of education.

Founded in 1992, St. Anne School is a Na-tional Blue Ribbon School and is accredited by the Western Catholic Educational Association (WCEA), the California Association of Indepen-dent Schools (CAIS), the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), and the National Association of the Education of Young Children (NAEYC). St. Anne School offers 2, 3, and 5 day preschool options, full-day kindergarten, and extended daycare.

Santa Margarita’s academic tracks are tailored to meet the needs of varied learners. The school offers 19 AP courses, an Interdisciplin-ary program caters to hands-on learners and the school’s Auxiliary Studies Program pro-vides students with specialized learning needs and the opportunity to reach their full poten-tial. Santa Margarita also has the distinction of being the only Catholic high school in the county to offer the rigorous International Bac-calaureate program. Preparing its students for college and beyond, the school’s One-to-One Tablet PC program puts a tablet in the hands of every student and teacher providing an im-mersive educational experience.

Faith development and extracurricular activi-ties are an integral part of a Santa Margarita

education. All-school masses, campus minis-try fellowship gatherings, retreats and daily prayer provide students with the opportunity to grow in their relationship with God and one another. Home of the Eagles, the school’s competitive athletic program emphasizes character building. A thriving, award-winning arts program includes more than 60 visual and performing art courses. With more than 70 campus clubs and activities, students are encouraged to explore their passions.

Santa Margarita’s 42-acre campus is nestled against the picturesque Saddleback Valley Mountains. The recently modernized library media center provides a collaborative learning environment or quiet place to study. Fall 2011 marked the opening of the Academic Ser-vices Center housing ten “smart classrooms” equipped with innovative technology; a 3,700 square-foot Digital Media Studio, home to the student news show "EagleTV;" and counsel-ing and academic offices. SMCHS also recent-ly opened the Eagle Athletic Center which

features a first-class 5,822 square-foot weight room. The school’s aquatics center opened in 2007 complete with an Olympic-sized pool.

Sixteen-year-old filmmaker Joshua Ovalle was winning all kinds of awards for his work. But at his local high school, he strug-gled tremendously. Josh suffers from at-tention deficit disorder (ADD). While he has great aspirations, he was, as he puts it, “lost in school.” Now, after less than a year at Halstrom Academy, everything is different.

“I’m proud of my GPA,” says Josh. “I have completely turned my grades around. I’m learning things better now... quicker; I’m getting A’s, and I’m more confident about everything. Also, my mind can’t wander off, as much as it may want to. Before Hal-strom, I felt that getting into a high caliber University was not going to happen, but now, that’s definitely a possibility.”

Flexible class scheduling is also an enor-mous benefit to many Halstrom students,

including Josh, who puts a lot of energy into his filmmaking. “In order to do a de-cent production, it takes a lot of time to put together a script, a storyboard, set up a production schedule, arrange a crew and cast, shoot, and then edit. The great thing about Halstrom is that I can customize my schedule which opens up time for me. I was able to complete my last short film while taking summer school. The flexibility of scheduling has also made it possible for me to go to film festivals I’ve been invited to attend in New York and Los Angeles,” says Josh.

“I think sometimes parents accept the traditional school model even when their kids aren’t doing well in school because they don’t know there are other options,” says Josh’s father, Wernher. “Parents shouldn’t accept having a ‘C’ student be-cause the traditional school system can’t

meet their needs. Parents need to know there are alternatives that are designed to help kids succeed. Halstrom Academy is one of those great alternatives.”

This fall marks the inaugural semester for the newly founded San Clemente Christian School. As the only private school offering transitional kindergarten through ninth grade in the city, San Clemente Christian School will become a fundamental part of the infrastruc-ture for this rapidly growing area.

San Clemente Christian School’s philosophy brings the “boutique school” concept to life. With only one small class of students for each grade level and a student-to-staff ratio of 1:3, each child’s individual needs are rec-ognized. Dr. Nicky Magnuson, the school’s Principal, explains, “We meet each student at his or her level; we don’t believe in ‘one size fits all,’ and we work tirelessly to help each student unlock his or her full potential. Our focus is to nurture our pupils spiritually and academically and imbue a strong sense of leadership within each child. One of my favorite comments from a parent was that every student gets to be a star here—that’s exactly the point!”

The school’s plan will take place in three phases. Phase I will involve relocating all ex-isting classes and programs from transitional kindergarten through 9th grade to the new facility; Phase II will be implemented as high school classes are added over the next three years; Phase III will include a full build-out of the playground and an expansion of sustain-able living programs.

Dr. Magnuson summarizes San Clemente Christian School’s academic approach as “full STEAM ahead—science, technology, engi-neering, arts and math.” The school prom-ises a rich, balanced experience with weekly student-led chapel services, a surf team, field trips to Science Camp, Catalina Island and Washington, D.C., and mission trips for all middle and high schoolers. In addition, the whole student body is exposed to Greek, Latin and Spanish language classes, starting in transitional kindergarten. Dr. Magnuson asserts, “We believe that SCCS is an ideal place for students to establish a strong aca-

As one of the first private Christian Schools in the area, Capistrano Valley Christian Schools has been serving the South Orange County community since 1973. With pro-grams for children in junior kindergarten all the way through high school; a focus on a Biblical Worldview as well as college prep academics gives CVCS a definite edge. The vision at CVCS is to develop leaders who are prepared to impact the world for Christ.

CVCS students are academically chal-lenged; starting with a full-day Kinder-garten program, then a math matricula-tion system that allows students to move ahead when ready, as well as honors courses in junior high, and honors and AP courses in high school. All classes are taught by credentialed caring teach-ers utilizing the latest technology (1 to 1 laptop program for JH and HS) in small classes.

IS IT TIME TO CHOOSE PRIVATE EDUCATION?

Students in grades K-5 enjoy the math and music program from UCI’s MIND Institute. Music and math is combined in a very unique piano class that is just one of the programs providing students with tools for successful learning.

Each student at CVCS reads and studies God’s Word regularly. Educators seek to show students how the truth of every dis-cipline finds its source in God and His work. They learn that God’s handiwork is revealed in Science, His goodness and justice in His-tory, His beauty in Art and Music, and His order and design in Mathematics. All are given opportunities to serve locally as well as internationally with missions trips to places as far away as Russia! In junior high, apologetics is introduced, and by the time students graduate from high school, they are well-prepared to defend their faith in this ever changing world.

CVCS offers an environment in which each student has the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of activities from champi-onship athletics, award winning performing arts, and unique student leadership pro-grams that help them understand where they fit into God’s plan.

Always learning, The Parish School graduates are confident and compassionate young men and women who will make a difference.

Faithful to Catholic values, The Parish School at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church sus-tains an evolving schoolwide learning environ-ment that inspires each learner to achieve his or her God-given potential inside and outside the classroom.

BENEFIT: SHE IS ALWAYS LEARNING. She digs out a rock during her class’s nature walk, her dirtied fingers deciphering textures to determine its geological origins. She collabo-rates with a classmate to code a game in Scratch, their story coming to life in scripts and pixels. She raises her hand as the priest asks about the Gos-pel reading. Her heart beats faster – she knows the answer. No matter where or what or when, she is always learning at The Parish School.

BENEFIT: HE DISCOVERS HIS FAITH. Though his shoes don’t quite touch the floor when he sits in the pew, he thinks deeply about God. Does God know his name? Is God watch-

ing him at this very moment? He finds himself doing things and not doing things because of God. More and more, something or Someone seems to be guiding his decisions. It is transfor-mative. He is discovering his faith.

BENEFIT: SHE SPEAKS HER MIND. At first she is scared to talk in class. But her teacher gently coaxes her. By lower school, her voice doesn’t tremble anymore. Her up-per school teachers encourage her to ask big questions. Classmates sometimes challenge her ideas, and she defends them. She listens to other learners too, adopting bits of their new thinking even as she adapts her own. Confident yet open-minded, candid yet thoughtful, she is speaking her mind.

BENEFIT: HE IS RESILIENT. His engineering experiment doesn’t work. For a moment, he is embarrassed. His fists clench, but he catches himself. He sits and thinks. He soon gets back to work, disassembling and reassembling pieces of his machine. When he’s ready again, he releases the ball bearing. Eureka! He is so giddy he could dance. Led by

expert educators who embrace classroom mistakes as real learning, he is becoming a resilient young man.

BENEFIT: SHE GETS INVOLVED. She has the worst balance on the Surf Team but is first to the beach for practice. She strug-gles with the F chord but plays her dad’s old Fender until her strumming hand aches. She runs for Student Government. She wins. While she is not the tallest or the most talented or that learner who others naturally follow, she refuses to be a bystander in school or life. She is going to be involved.

At Mathnasium Learning Centers, math makes sense! Whether your child started out far behind or is already ahead in math, Mathnasium helps students advance because they know that any child can be successful in math—it’s a matter of teaching it in a way that makes sense to them.

Experienced math tutors utilize proprietary teaching materials and techniques, The Math-nasium Method™, to deliver a customized learning plan designed to address each stu-dent’s needs. This instructional approach goes beyond traditional math tutoring to develop an understanding and build a love for math.

If math is a problem, Mathnasium can solve it. Students will grow more excited and confident about math—and their grades will reflect that.

For students who already excel in math, the sky’s the limit. Mathnasium’s instructors will work to expand your child’s math skills. When learning math is made exciting, students will discover all the doors that will open by being proficient in math.

Students engage one-to-one with their instruc-tors in a unique combination of mental, verbal,

Basic math concepts and skills are blended with a program specifically designed to help students build number sense. This special program shows them how and why the useful number rules they’re learning work so they are able to understand how they can be ap-plied to interesting areas such as computer science, biology, and psychology.

Students are evaluated with a written and verbal assessment unique to Mathnasium. Based on the results, they develop a cus-tom-tailored program designed to close any educational gaps they may have so they can jump ahead when they’re ready for advanced math challenges.

Mathnasium builds upon your child’s exist-ing foundation and focuses on explaining why mathematical rules work so that children learn and understand the rules, not just mem-orize them.

Instructors also help students understand their homework as part of each session and prepare them for school tests, as well as standardized tests such as the California High School Exit Exam, SAT, ACT and ISEE.

By giving your child a firm foundation—and confidence—in math, Mathnasium can unlock the potential for continued educational suc-cess in the future.

At Our Savior’s Lutheran School, class sizes are small so children have room to grow. Our Savior’s goal is to educate and inspire by creating a learning envi-ronment that balances the heart, mind and spirit. In this environment individu-als don’t get lost and students excel academically. Three of Our Savior’s fifth grade students won Statewide Cham-pionships at the 2015 California History Day. The fifth grade class also scored in the top 4% of the nation in math and the top 8% in reading.

Our Savior’s Lutheran School alumni leave knowing who they are, confident in their academic skills and work habits. The teachers, administrators and staff at Our Savior’s celebrate and honor the diversity of gifts, abilities and backgrounds each child contributes to the school commu-nity. All faiths are welcome.

The core programs include the following:

TEST PREPSAT, ACT, SAT Subject and AP programs. The focus is on content, which includes detailed lesson materials and regular practice tests.

ACADEMIC ENRICHMENTSpeech and Debate. Students from elementary to high school age learn delivery, speechmak-ing, argumentation, and research — concepts that will help them now and beyond.

Readiprep English and Math. English classes focus on critical reading, vocabulary enrich-ment, and essay writing. Math classes help stu-dents master concepts and prepare for exams.

Academic Tutoring. Elite helps students improve or get ahead in their core academic classes.

COLLEGE CONSULTINGPersonality Tests. Elite’s counselors assist stu-dents in discovering their personality types and

learning styles. Test results are then applied to help students select majors, colleges, and even future careers.

Application Workshop. Counselors help stu-dents create memorable college essays and take them step-by-step through the process to create the best application possible.

Whether your student is in elementary, middle or high school, needs help for 1 month or 1 year, is struggling or advanced, Elite will come alongside you to chart and navigate the best course for your child.

In 1987, Elite Educational Institute began with one tutoring center in Rowland Heights, California. From those humble beginnings, Elite has expanded to more than 40 locations across the world, and has helped thousands of students realize their academic goals. The Institute seeks to not only offer preparation for college, but also learning for life.

When students first arrive at Elite, they will be offered a diagnostic test in the academic area or grade level of their choice. This is followed by a counseling session with the Director to review the test, their academic history, and their goals. All of these steps are taken to ensure that parents select the right program.

The programs are grounded in Elite’s curric-ulum, which has been carefully researched, developed and revised over the past 25 years.

ST. CATHERINE OF SIENAPARISH SCHOOL

Saint Catherine of Siena Parish School is rooted in a rich 57-year history based on unparalleled academic excellence for grades K-8, as well as a newly introduced Transitional Kindergarten (TK) program for students turning four years old by September 1.

With the highest accreditation from WASC and WCEA, the school provides a comprehensive faith-based education within an inspiring, safe environment. Academically skilled teachers provide a nurturing environment that facilitates the growth of the school’s students as faith-filled lifelong learners, effective communica-tors, and responsible citizens.

A full spectrum of sports, music, theater and fine arts programs are offered to foster athletic, creative and musical interests. Saint Catherine of Siena has also been named a Frieda Belin-fante Class Act school – the Pacific Symphony’s flagship youth education program.

Graduates of Saint Catherine of Siena stand out in the crowd. They are distinctive in their self-understanding, confidence, personal commitment to a life of integrity and service, and a strong, active faith in God. The Saint Catherine of Siena experience changes the world, one child at a time, and is an excep-tional community of choice for those families who are looking for the unique blend of edu-cation, faith and preparation for life. That is truly the Saint Catherine of Siena difference.

Saint Catherine of Siena invites you to “Come and See.” Meet the parents, the stu-dents, the faculty, and enjoy the experience. The school’s educational philosophy is root-ed in relationships that transform lives, and the administration and faculty look forward to meeting you as you take the next steps toward becoming part of the school commu-nity that is not just a school, but a life-long way of living.

This year Saint Catherine of Siena is hosting an Open House on February 4, 2016 at 5:30 p.m., the same evening as its community wide Pasta Dinner hosted by the 6th grade class. Bring your child to look at the school, meet the teachers and sit down with the families. methods are employed to provide students with the foundations and tools to problem solve and discover answers on their own. A new science, technology, engineering, arts, and math (STEAM) initiative pres-ents an innovative and engaging method of learning, teaching students through project-based learning to address real world problems in inventive ways. The goal is to ignite curiosity and encourage discovery in order to develop students who are life-long learners.

STEAM integrates and reinforces concepts across subject areas and has been implemented in all grade levels, beginning with the Early Childhood program for three-year-olds. The integration of skills and concepts throughout the curriculum provides students with a depth of understanding, which goes beyond traditional education. Learning is deepened and retention is improved through re-inforcement from one subject to another, and the projects engage all learning styles and modalities.

Above all else, St. John’s is a place for children to thrive. Students can explore interests through a di-verse offering of academic and extra-curricular pro-grams in an environment that is welcoming and safe.

ASK DR. JULIE?

“A sad summary of life contains: could have; might have; and should have.”

—Louis E. Boone

There is no time like the present to step-out of your comfort zone, by trying new things, facing your fears, and taking a few risks. This gives you an opportunity for growth, to thrive and bring out the best in you. Surprisingly, stepping

out of your comfort zone can have health benefits as well as boost your mood!

Trying new things can look different to everyone, from going to a new restaurant once a month, attending a play, concert or cultural event, going to church, trav-eling to a foreign country, paddle-boarding, kayaking, deep sea fishing, skydiving, hiking… the list is endless! Write a list of at least 5 things that you have thought about doing, and just for fun do some research…

One Ritz-Carlton Drive, Dana Point949.240.2000

RitzCarlton.com/Laguna180blu

BY SHELLEY HUDSON

erched above Salt Creek Beach at The Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel is an oceanfront paradise that’s difficult to beat in South Orange County. Named for the 180° view of the Pacific, 180blu is the sum-

mer spot for locals, jetsetters, families, and tourists alike. Although you may come across the occasional begowned bride traipsing through the hotel lobby, you don’t need to wait for a special occasion to visit. 180blu is an any-day-of-the-week destination for business meetings, leisurely lunches, relaxing happy hours or romantic dinners. As you drink in the multi-million dollar view and a beverage or two, it’s evident that life rarely gets much better.

180blu’s creative slate of craft cocktails, extensive wine list and mouth-watering menu options add to the lounge’s already near-perfect vibe and spectacular views. It’s easy to get swept away by the surf and sun while casually chatting with friends on a comfy sofa or as you gaze out at the coastline with that special someone. Before you know it, you’re clearing your calendar for the rest of the day and watching a breathtaking sunset while listening to live music.

I met a girlfriend at 180blu to enjoy a long-overdue chatfest over cocktails and crashing waves. We sipped a fresh Peach Bellini and an Ultimate Margarita (served iced-cold and straight up) while we decided on a few small plates to sample. We took our delightful server Niki’s recommendation and went with Lobster Tacos, Spicy Tuna and Wild Mushroom Huarache.

The tacos were as adorable as they were delicious. Served in little tortilla enve-lopes secured with tiny clothespins and generously stuffed with fresh lobster, black bean purée, chile salsa, avocado and cilantro, the serving of four was easily shareable and hearty. The Spicy Tuna was also a hit. The ahi was drizzled with wasabi-pea aioli and eel sauce and served atop a crispy sushi rice round. The result was crunchy, spicy and salty goodness.

My hands-down favorite was the Wild Mushroom Huarache, which took the form of a decadent flatbread. The cornmeal crust was layered with a variety of nutty, earthy mushrooms, caramelized onions, black beans, creamy goat cheese and truffle oil. The combination blended seamlessly, but each flavor was distinct. This one is sized for sharing, too, if you can stand it.

180blu is the perfect place to be on Friday and Saturday evenings, with high-quality, rolled-to-order sushi on the deck with acoustic guitar to sweeten the scene. Taco Tuesday is just plain better here, too. Chef Steve Wan elevates the classic street taco to a gourmet level—think tequila chicken, cojita cheese and pumpkin seed pesto. Add Partida tequila flights to the mix, and what could go wrong?

180blu even caters to your canines! A monthly Yappy Hour cocktail party for dogs and their best friends on the Dana Lawn benefits the Wounded Veterans Initiative of Canine Companions. Be sure to watch The Local Dish calendar for doggie-friendly holiday events at 180blu also.
