I know a thing or two about sibling rivalry. As the youngest of five kids, it was a constant battle to keep up with my big brothers. Ping pong best-of-fives frequently ended with broken paddles and tears of frustration. A benign activity like badminton became a virtual blood sport with birdies smashed across the net to inflict bodily harm. Risk and Monopoly were played with such fierce intensity that one would think world dominance and financial ruin actually hung in the balance.

Super Bowl XLVII showcases an historic family matchup as two head coach brothers, John Harbaugh of the Ravens and younger brother Jim Harbaugh of the 49ers, fight it out on February 3rd. The Harbaughs are less than two years apart in age so I can only imagine the pride one of these sibling coaches will feel after realizing a Super Bowl Championship dream... and the satisfaction of flashing that pesky ring at the next family dinner.

This month's cover features JSerra Catholic High School in San Juan Capistrano. Celebrating 10-years of academic excellence, its impressive journey from groundbreaking to becoming one of Orange County's premier learning institutions is a remarkable achievement. Learn more about JSerra's growth, philosophy and accomplishments in our cover editorial on page 10.

As San Juan Capistrano’s JSerra Catho-lic High School celebrates ten years of pioneering in education, its new lead-ership looks with pride to the founda-tion upon which it was built and with a sharp focus on an ambitious blueprint for the future.

Newly minted President Richard Meyer and first-year Principal Dr. John Freeh were drawn to JSerra not only because of the school’s high scholastic ranking and college admission rates, but also by its independent operating model and entrepreneurial spirit. President Meyer admits that he’s still “in learn-ing mode,” but says he’s happy to let JSerra’s existing culture shape his vi-sion for future progress. “The solid in-frastructure allows for easy adaptation in changing times,” Meyer says, “Our independence allows us to experience growth with no molds or boundaries.”

One example of JSerra’s untethered potential for growth is its online learn-ing program. Students who have unique learning styles, medical condi-tions or travel for athletics or work can take advantage of the extensive menu of virtual classes and other resources. The online offerings can also supple-ment a campus-based schedule, al-lowing for maximum flexibility and cur-riculum customization. Last year, 40% of the student body took advantage of online classes.

JSerra’s internationally-recognized Mag-net program is one of the few opportuni-ties of its kind where students receive in-depth, hands-on experience in a specific profession. Law, business, and medical programs all offer college-accredited classes and field work. Medical Magnet students, for example, attend college-level anatomy and physiology classes and work in a hospital alongside clini-cians and patients. JSerra’s Engineering Magnet launches in Fall 2013 and the coursework will also be integrated with real-world applications.

JSerra’s Artist in Residence program approaches visual and performance art much like the Magnet curriculum. Class-es in painting, sculpture, photography, writing, and broadcast journalism are all taught by industry professionals and students are encouraged to submit their work for consideration in galleries and community art shows.

President Meyer insists that, although academic excellence is one of the pil-lars of a JSerra education, the institu-tion places equal emphasis on spiritual and character development. “We are committed to imparting to all of our stu-dents the truths and beauty of the Cath-olic faith. We also encourage our non-Catholic students to embrace their own faith – whatever it may be – and prac-tice it well.” Meyer continues, “Princi-pal Freeh and I saw an opportunity at

JSerra to shape our students from the inside out—to imbue each student with a vision for the future to become the best version of himself or herself.” To that end, JSerra’s extracurricular programming is as rich and rigorous as its academic side. The choir performs locally and nationally (including a recent gig at Carnegie Hall!), and a tour of Spain is in the works for next year. The girls cross-country team won the State Championship three years in a row—the first three-peat in CIF history. Varsity girls soccer is in the middle of an unprecedented winning streak, and the JV football team just celebrated the first undefeated season in school history.

“Remember Your Story” is JSerra’s theme for the 2012 – 2013 school year, inspiring students and faculty to commemorate the school's impressive journey and legacy. “This vision was created by parents and built from the ground up – we started with 150 students and a handful of devoted staff members,” Meyer says. “Now we have over 1,000 students, 70 faculty, and a tremendous support system of additional staff, parents, and community members.” As part of its 10-year celebration, the school releases a weekly video featuring an alumni or teacher who describes his or her experience at JSerra and how it has trans-lated into success. The inspirational videos can be found on JSerra’s YouTube channel and as part of the broadcast journalism group’s weekly production.

President Meyer looks forward to JSerra’s next decade with hope and a clear vision. “While it’s important to continually stay abreast of innovations in the field of educa-tion, our focus is not to “keep up with the Joneses” here at JSerra. Our mission, truth be told, is singular and timeless – to fully in-tegrate faith and character formation with a rich academic experience in order to assist parents in raising their children to become men and women of integrity and virtue.”

Alumni John Razzano was in JSerra’s first graduating class in 2006 and he cred-its his experience there with much of his real-world success. “The intimate en-vironment and family feel made it a place where I could really excel academ-ically and professionally,” he says. John earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s de-grees at USC in Astronauti-cal Engineering and now works for the Air Force on missile launch detection satellites. John adds, “The science department at JSerra definitely nurtured my passion and gave me the foundation I needed for those tough college engineering courses.”

QUESTION: How do I know if I need an antibiotic? —Holly, San Clemente

ROSS MEDICAL: This time of year is known as the cold and flu season. Microorganisms called viruses cause both the common cold and the flu. Symptoms of the flu include fever, severe body aches and fatigue. The flu can also cause nasal congestion, cough and sore throat. The common cold has similar symptoms, but flu symptoms are often more intense and appear in a shorter time span than the common cold. The flu and common cold usually will cause respiratory type symptoms for about 5 days. After 5 days, the symptoms will decrease in severity and the immune system will completely clear the virus.

When symptoms do not improve after 5-7 days, but become much worse, a secondary bacterial infection has most likely taken place. The patient can experience higher fever, more coughing and fatigue. This is the time that antibiotics are appropriate measures to cure an infection. If the course of the illness is within the first 3 days, this is more likely a viral infection, and antibiotics will not cure a viral infection. Typically, the bacterial infection occurs about 7 days after the start of symptoms.

During this cold and flu season, if you start to have symptoms of an upper respiratory infection, but are not sure about whether you have the cold or the flu, it is in your best interest to visit a physician. Your physician can provide you with a prescription for an anti-viral medication if you do have the flu, and can provide you a prescription for an antibiotic if you have developed a secondary bacterial infection. —Monina Geda, D.O.

DID YOU KNOW?A new study from the new profit ear foundation found that people age 45-59 are losing their hearing at faster rates than previous generations.

“Losing your hearing takes you out of society” C. Simmons, 54 a Chef in Manhattan Beach, CA.

Kochlin of the Better Hearing Institute stated their research shows

people with untreated hearing loss earn about $23,000 less per year than those that get hearing systems to correct their hearing. Take this quiz and if you answer yes to more than one of these questions, please schedule a Free Hearing Health Check with The Rose Hearing Group, Inc. at (949) 388-5703.

2. Do you feel tired after a long conversation?

3. Do you sometimes miss words in a conversation and need the words to be repeated?

4. Do you have a hard time following a conversation in a restaurant when with a group?

5. When with others, does background noise bother you?

6. Do you need to turn up the volume on the radio or TV?

7. Are you having difficulties with hearing a doorbell or a telephone ring?

8. Is a telephone conversation difficult to understand?

Q: Why do we stay in relationships, jobs, and situations that make us chronically miserable?

A: Have you ever asked yourself why a friend or family member continues to work for that horrible boss? Or why that close friend stays in his/her abusive or unhealthy relationship? This is very confusing to many of us who observe loved ones who suffer chronically for years. A common reason most people stay stuck in

these unhealthy situations is they are concerned how it will effect the people in their life if they make a change. A common misconception is they fear the unknown, and think about the worst case scenario. They worry about hurting others regardless of how much they are suffering. A common dialogue “If I leave my job what will my spouse, family, my neighborhood/community think and feel about me? What if I make less money at the next job? What will happen if I separate from my wife/husband/partner? How will I handle the problems that will follow?”

Men are often taught at a young age to “man-up,” “be tough,” or “suck it up,” say nothing — you can handle the abuse. Well, the problem is we are not wired for abuse. Chronic stress and abuse correlate with health and mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. If the people in your life really love and care about you, they want you to be happy and healthy, not sick and miserable? If they are opposed to your decision to make changes in your life you need to ask yourself whom are you living your life for? Your friends and family need to respect and trust your decision to do what is best for you.

When we are chronically miserable we tend to cope by indulging in self-destructive behaviors: drinking, drugs, gambling, shopping, internet-sites, and infidelity. These unhealthy behaviors temporarily provide an escape, pleasure and comfort, but in the long run tend to lead to larger problems and more misery. It may be helpful to

seek professional help either individually, couples therapy or both. I am here to help support you through your challenges and positive changes that lay ahead in 2013! —Dr. Julie A. Davis

nown for its mouth-watering fare, Bad to the Bone BBQ cel-ebrates its 8th year in business in San Juan Capistrano. Lo-cated in the Ortega Village center (where Ortega Highway and Rancho Viejo Road meet), you can practically smell your way there! With meats slowly cooking in the Hickory wood-

burning pits for hours on end, the tempting aroma draws you in and the taste keeps you coming back for more.

Bad to the Bone has a surprisingly large menu for a barbecue joint. Din-ers can choose from appetizers, salads, soup, sandwiches, burgers, steaks, chops, seafood and over a dozen side dishes. But make no mistake, it’s the Carolina-inspired Pulled Pork, meaty Baby Back Ribs, and the tender Beef Brisket that makes Bad to the Bone so well-known in these here parts. Other barbecue meats include Tri-Tip, St. Louis Ribs, Sausage, and 1/4 Chicken. Order a plate, or better yet—a combination plate—and you'll understand what the fuss is about.

Owners Al Meyling, a California native, and Marty Wells, an Oklahoman who practically has barbecue sauce running through his veins, have created a ca-sual family atmosphere for enjoying Midwestern-influenced barbecue. The classic western decor, plus swift and friendly service, easily get you in the mood for a relaxing and filling meal. One exception to the rustic motif are the flat-screen TVs located throughout where you can catch the big game while feasting on your favorite grub.

Some changes in store for Bad to the Bone this year include the expansion of the patio and bar areas. The bar will soon feature 25 beers on tap, includ-ing IPA, Lager, and Belgian labels. Nothing goes better with barbeque than a cold one!

Look for Happy Hour specials Monday through Friday from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. Live entertainment starts at 6:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights. Bad to the Bone also caters events, offering a variety of menus for any occasion. Visit badtothebone-bbq.com or call 949.218.0227 to learn more.

Finally! The program to help you break out of the diet/binge cycle and lose those painful pounds naturally and permanently. Learn to feel better about yourself, lose the insatiable appetite for food, and come to peace with your body.

As former emotional overeaters, The Hungry Heart’s team of Certified Clinical Hypnotherapist and Nutritional Counselors would like to share with you a better way to healthy, permanent weight loss. We’ve all been through it: suffering with chronic weight fluctuations, binging, and yo-yo dieting. We understand the frustration and confusion of losing weight only to regain it again.

The Hungry Heart is a place for healing your relationship with food so you can live every day free of compulsive overeating. Learn to move past your preoccu-pation with eating and weight loss and move towards a more rewarding and satisfying life. Our 8 session systematic program combines behavioral and nutritional counseling with hypnosis to reinforce new behaviors and thought patterns. Weight loss is a natural by-product of changing our thinking patterns. We work together as a team to create LIFE-LONG changes in your eating habits. This is a permanent approach to out of control eating.

The program provides a guilt-free, safe, and discreet environment for men and women where… YOU WILL GET POSITIVE RESULTS!

From the time I was a young child, food was never just food for me. It was my love, support, and comfort. It was my best friend. However, it was also the reason why I hated myself and did not treat my body in a healthy way. My body had become my worst enemy.

It was my little secret. I used food for dealing with every situation of my life. As an adult, most people saw me as a very successful and happy woman.

Behind closed doors, I was an entirely different person. You name it and I did it with food. My weight determined how I felt about myself instead of who I was as a person. Food consumed my life. I didn’t understand why I couldn’t stop the addictive cycle I had going on with the binging, exercising, constant diets, and starving myself. I hated myself more and more each day. I felt like the biggest failure in the world and felt very alone. I finally learned that I did not have a problem with food. I had other issues in my life. Food had become my way of blocking out my discomfort or avoiding my feelings inside. I can now say that for over thirteen years, I have been healthy and strong and no longer need food to deal with my life and emotions. Food is no longer a struggle for me. It is an incredible feeling after all those years of hurting and disliking myself. I can honestly say that this has been the most rewarding thing I have accomplished in my life. I am thrilled to finally take care of myself: mind, body, and spirit.
