[ THE LUACH The Newsletter of Temple Israel of Sharon, a traditional egalitarian community September/October 2014 President’s Message I look forward to welcoming the New Year 5775 with you, my Temple Israel family. Last year I remember thinking, as we begin a new endeavor how important it is to set goals. e “to do” list this year has been and will continue to be a long one! We have already put our interim clergy coverage in place for the New Year and we welcome Rabbi Leslie Gordon once again into our homes, our hearts, and our community. It is quite comforting to have Rabbi Gordon with us through June 2015 and we do very much appreciate her leadership. We have hired a number of rabbis and scholars-in-residence to assist in our professional leadership, to make certain that we are delivering all of the ritual, education, and overall day-to-day support required to meet the needs and demands of our community’s various constituencies. We are going to have a busy year as we embark upon the rabbinic search for a full time senior rabbi for Temple Israel. We anticipate interviewing candidates in late autumn through February 2015. Candidates will visit with us, parlor meetings will be held, the congregation will be involved, and the Board of Trustees will make a decision by April. We foresee having our new rabbi join us on or around July 1, 2015. It’s very exciting! During this, my last year as Temple Israel’s president, I look forward to working with the Board and lay leadership to further deepen our sense of community and a feeling of family, where members are committed to one another and all can thrive and grow spiritually. You have heard me say it before: We are a strong, healthy, and vibrant community, and we care deeply about our future. Our collective goal is to create a kehillah, a community, where members feel a connection, a sense of belonging, that their presence is important…and their absence is noticed; where people care for one another and want to insure the existence of Temple Israel because it adds meaning to their lives. We stick together… we have already demonstrated that in times of adversity. Our road has been rocky but our future is bright and full of promise. We are creating an outdoor adventure area, Woodland Wilderness, that will benefit Hertz Nursery School, our Aſter School Adventures program, the Religious School, Ner Tamid, and all of us. e multi-use outdoor space will feature nature- based programming, praying, and learning areas. Just like the Community Garden, this new area also allows us the space to cultivate and grow outside of the walls of Temple Israel itself. At Temple Israel, we continue to reach out beyond that which is comfortable and has worked in the past. Last year at this time, I spoke of the garden as a perfect metaphor for the goals we can pursue together. We are undergoing a process of growth and are implementing change where we continue to experiment with what we plant in our garden. Some ideas will take hold and others will need to be weeded out. We are in forward motion. We must always remember that we have many different members at Temple Israel with diverse interests and needs. Our daveners, meditators, learners, teachers, members of Hazak, Sisterhood, Brotherhood, Hertz Nursery, Aſter School Adventures, our friends in Ner Tamid, and our phenomenal volunteers… You all make Temple Israel the wonderful, thriving institution of which we are so proud. I hope you are able to find your place in our beautiful Temple Israel garden. I thank you for placing your trust in me during this past year and I hope to be of great service to our community in this New Year, 5775. I am grateful and appreciative to our executive leadership team who has been working overtime and tirelessly on your behalf. Many thanks to our past presidents, lay leaders, and professional staff for their ongoing commitment to the well- being of our Temple community. President’s MessageI look forward to welcoming the New Year 5775 with you, my Temple Israel family. Last year I remember thinking, as we begin a new endeavor how important it is to set goals. The “to do” list this year has been and will continue to be a long one!

We stick together… we have already demonstrated that in times

of adversity. Our road has been rocky but our future is bright and full of promise.

We are creating an outdoor adventure area, Woodland Wilderness, that will benefit Hertz Nursery School, our After School Adventures program, the Religious School, Ner Tamid, and all of us. The multi-use outdoor space will feature nature-based programming, praying, and learning areas.

Our daveners, meditators, learners, teachers, members of Hazak, Sisterhood, Brotherhood, Hertz Nursery, After School Adventures, our friends in Ner Tamid, and our phenomenal volunteers… You all make Temple Israel the wonderful, thriving institution of which we are so proud.

Many thanks to our past presidents, lay leaders, and professional staff for their ongoing commitment to the well-being of our Temple community. My wife Lois and I wish you and your family a joyous, healthy, and productive New Year, a Shana Tova Umetukah.

Cantor’s NotesRosh Hashana and Yom Kippur are dis-tinctive in a variety of ways.

The Rosh Hashanah liturgy, its Torah pas-sages, theological messages, and customs have universal themes. We speak of Rosh Hashanah as the birthday of the entire world, a world that includes all peoples from all walks of life. On this celebratory day, we address God as a collective “We,” with a focus on how we intersect with and interact within God’s majestic universe. We recognize God as the Ultimate Ruler, but we see ourselves as vital and valued partners with God in an ever-evolving creative enterprise.

In contrast, the Yom Kippur liturgy, its Torah passages, theological messages, and customs focus on individualistic themes. On Yom Kippur we do indeed address God as a collective body; however, our approach is more like a collective “I” with a focus on the individual heart and the soul of a particular people, Israel. On this day of intense introspection, we turn nearly 180 degrees from our Rosh Hashanah reflective prayer model. In-stead of viewing ourselves in terms of our human power and potential, we expend 25-hours to recognize our limitations. On Yom Kippur we transition from feeling as co-masters of our fate to feeling as humble, even lowly human beings whose lives are predetermined to be infinitesi-mally limited. Yom Kippur, in a sense, is a day dedicated to a descent of the human spirit. In a cursory analysis, this can ap-pear to be quite depressing. Why would

we willingly participate in an experience of self-degradation? I’ll try to explain.

The High Holy Day Season begins on the 1st day of Elul, when we sound the shofar each and every morning (except on Shab-bat and Erev Rosh Hashanah). Approxi-mately six weeks later, at the close of the 10th day of Tishrei, the final shofar blast concludes Yom Kippur. The T’kiah G’dola (the final loud and elongated shofar blast) is a clear signal that liberates us from our prior-perceived selves. The entire reflec-tive process, including its final 25 hours, enables the sincere penitent to gain a gift of freedom, better equipped to achieve a healthier balance of refined communal and individual qualities in terms of our self-awareness, interaction with others, and in our relationship with God. Rather than degrading the individual, the pro-cess offers a brilliant means of enhancing individual and communal spirits. The end result is not depressing – quite the contrary. The process ends with relief, joy, and in a few minutes following the sho-far’s blast and fast, we celebrate sumptu-ously at last!

For many of us, this past year has been one of challenge. The mahzor (prayer book) relates that “God knows the hidden secrets of all who live.” It is my prayer that when we emerge from our daven-ing experiences that we, too, will have a better understanding of the secrets of own hearts and souls. I pray that we will be better positioned to be both kinder to others and ourselves with our perceptions and in our judgments. And, I pray, that as conflicting secrets and mysteries are re-

vealed, God will favor each of us, and the sincere penitent near to us with mercy. May we emulate God by choosing to feel merciful in our reflection of our own mis-deeds, and for those who regret wronging us. By so choosing, we will surely achieve a more pleasant internal state that will enable us to perform and pursue peaceful approaches each day that God blesses us with life.

Myrna and I hope that, b’ezrat HaShem, the coming year will be liberating, healthy, and peaceful for you, your dear ones, all Israel, and all peace-loving people. May your fast be meaningful, and may your feast be joyful for you and for all in our beloved Temple Israel congrega-tion. With deep gratitude to Myrna, and to rabbis and colleagues with whom I have served and will serve, to our re-markable synagogue officers and trustees, and to you, my especially dear extended family, Shana Tova U’metukah!

COMMUNITY

Religious SchoolEach new season always brings a certain amount of change. We often experience changes in weather, in scenery, or in daily routine. This year at Temple Israel, our community will experi-ence several significant changes. So that we may celebrate and embrace all that is new, our chosen guiding educational theme is the words of a blessing that Jews for centuries have recited to mark new experiences:

שהחינּו, וקימנּו, והגיענּו לזמן הזה!Shehecheyanu, v’kiy’manu, v’higianu laz’man hazeh!

I’m looking forward to focusing on these words, whose ori-gins date back to the days of the Talmud, with my colleagues, students, parents, and friends. Throughout the year, I hope that we will be able to make modern day meaning of these ancient words. Appropriately, they are placed after the formula we use in all blessings, causing us to pause and to appreciate:

The One Who has given us life: שהחינּוThe One Who has given us strength: וקימנּו

The One Who has helped us reach this time: והגיענּו

I know that seeing these words in our school corridor and in our classrooms will help inspire all of us as we step into an ex-citing new school year.

I am happy to be welcoming Rob Landstein, our new Educa-tion Committee co-chair who will be working alongside the experienced chair, Mike Freeman. It is, as always, my honor to be partnering with these leaders under the executive guidance of Marion Gribetz, our VP of Education. I am thrilled to wel-come all new and returning students and our fabulous team of teachers. All of this and so much more to look forward to – stay posted!

In closing, I am reminded of one of my favorite Biblical verses, Ecclesiastes 3:1: “to everything there is a season, and a time for every purpose under heaven.” May this year of great change and progress be one that is guided by heavenly wisdom and goodness for all of our Temple Israel families, and for the entire world Jewish community.

Shanah Tovah u’mitukah - best wishes for a good and sweet new year!

Lunch & LearnEntering its 28th season, Lunch and Learn, sponsored by Temple Israel’s Sisterhood, is an opportunity for regular adult study and fellowship. All are welcome!

Lunch and Learn provides a lively forum for discussion, learning, and a sense of community. Over the years, Lunch and Learn has become more than a study group, it has become a family, with members caring about each other not just as classmates but as friends.

This year, Lunch and Learn will be taught by Rabbi David Finkelstein of Temple Beth Israel, Waltham, with the help of our dedicated coordinator, Millie Hoffman. Sessions meet on Mondays from 12:15-2:15pm, with lunch catered by The Butcherie II in Canton. Classes begind on October 6 and continue through May. Please consider joining our “family” of learners. In July we had record turnout for our Jewish Film Festival held on three consecutive Thursday nights. And by the time you read this, we will have held our 9th Annual BBQ, this year followed by Jukebox Memories presented by Vic Solo. We want to thank our barbecue cooks, Mel Mirrow, Steve Azer, and Olavo Gomes, as well as all our wonderful Hazak members who always volunteer to help prepare, serve, and clean-up at all of our events.

This fall our programs will offer a variety of events: September 11: Paid Up Dinner, no charge to members who have paid their dues for the 2014-15 year • October 23: Author Steve Puleo will discuss his new book, The Caning • November 10: Boston Jewish Film Festival on the South Shore at Patriot Place • November 23: the Sandra Gamm Memorial Concert featuring the Zamir Choral • December 18: Festive Hanukkah Party • January 11 and February 8: Sunday Brunch

Sisterhood Shalom ha’achiotenu (hello our sisters)! The Sisterhood leadership team, led by co-presidents Beth Lappen and Shelley Keimach, is planning programs that will be fun, informative, and original. The theme for the year is: “This is Not Your Mother’s Sisterhood.”

As Jewish women at Temple Israel, we are united by many shared beliefs, but we also have disparate interests and needs and are at different stages in our lives. We would like to offer something for everyone, and will also be contacting a cross section of women in our congregation to solicit ideas and information. We welcome any and all input and invite you to contact us [email protected].

Opening program: Sunset, Sip and Schmooze, Thursday, September 4, 5:30-7:30 at the Massapoag Yacht Club. It will be

a dairy potluck and an opportunity to revel in the closing days of summer with good company, delicious food, and sangria – the perfect drink for sunset with friends. Reservations are a must since space is limited. RSVP to Ilene Greenwald at 781-784-3726 or [email protected].

Cultural Arts The Temple Israel Cultural Arts Committee is excited to announce the two exciting concerts scheduled for the 2014-2015 year.

The first of these events will be the annual Sandra Gamm Memorial Concert, which will be held at 4:00pm, on Sunday, November 23, 2014. Sponsored by the Sandra Gamm Memorial Fund for Music and the Creative Arts, and organized by the Cultural Arts Committee and Hazak, this year’s concert will feature the famed Zamir Chorale of Boston. Founded in 1969, the Chorale’s mission, as set forth on its website, is to serve as a “musical and educational organization dedicated to raising awareness of the breadth and beauty of Jewish culture through performance, recordings, symposia, and musical commissions.” With music that spans thousands of years, four continents, and a variety of styles, the Chorale’s repertoire includes Jewish liturgical pieces, major classical works, music of the Holocaust, newly-commissioned compositions, and Israeli, Yiddish and Ladino folk songs.

On Sunday, March 8, 2015, Temple Israel will partner with the Boston Jewish Music Festival to host one of the Festival’s concerts, featuring Sarah Aroeste and her band. Inspired by her family’s Sephardi roots in Spain and Macedonia, Sarah combines traditional Mediterranean Sephardic sounds with contemporary influences such as rock, funk, pop, and blues to bring a fresh, modern, and inspiring style to Ladino and Sephardi music. Sarah’s unwavering commitment to Ladino culture has resulted in three recordings and performances in major music venues throughout the United States, Israel, and Europe. Sarah Aroeste has received notable attention for her innovative music, and has helped to transform and revitalize a cultural tradition.

Woodland Wilderness: Outdoor Class-room Experience at Temple IsraelI am very excited to announce the launch of a new space for our community. “Woodland Wilderness” is being created on and surrounding 111 Pond Street. Our new space will encourage outdoor explo-ration, various learning environments, and space for families to enjoy year round. Johanna Perlin and I met with outdoor classroom expert, Tobey Eugenio, to design a space that will include, music, performance, art, literacy, loose parts building, and more! Tobey designed and created Hidden Hollow at the “Heritage Mu-seum” in Sandwich, MA and is also certified by Nature Explore of Nebraska as a designer of outdoor classroom spaces. I am very grateful for her expertise and donated time to this proj-ect. Woodland Wilderness will be geared towards 2-year-olds through 5th graders. We also plan to have a nature path carved to connect Woodland Wilderness with the garden area on Al-den Street. As you can imagine, this is a project that is expen-sive and will be done in phases as funds become available. Our first project will be putting up a fence along Pond Street; the field side of the fence will be interactive. A performance space will also be built at 111 Pond Street, open for many different

play and learning experiences. Hertz, Ner Tamid, Temple Israel’s Religious School and ASA will be users from the get go! Erev Sukkot there will be a Hertz/Ner Tamid family program to build a rustic wilderness Sukkah and have a picnic dinner to welcome the holiday. This will be an exciting start to the year.

Initial funding for the project will be made in memory of my father, Frank Ridge. My father loved the outdoors and children. A further connection will be made to his great grandchildren, Izzabel and Paxton, in their honor, to foster a love of adventure, risk and the outdoors. Some of you know my father went skydiving close to his 90th birthday and wished he could have shared more adven-ture moments with his precious great grandchildren. Hertz Nurs-ery School will also be making an initial contribution to the project.

Temple Israel welcomes any contribution large or small. There will be a place to recognize larger contributions on site, and all contributions will be noted in the Luach. Please earmark your check, made out to Temple Israel, for Woodland Wilderness! It is my hope that Woodland Wilderness becomes integrated into our various curriculum and will be a daily family destina-tion

March of The LivingAbraham Lewin, a Warsaw Ghetto survi-vor, wrote on September 13, 1941 on the atmosphere in the Warsaw Ghetto: “We live in a prison… When we look at the swollen, half-naked bodies of Jews lying in the streets, we feel as if we find ourselves at the subhuman level… reality surpasses any fantasy; and possibly only one thing could still surprise us. This would be mass murder in the place of systematic exter-mination… Yet, we wish to live on, to continue as free and creative men...”

It was this spirit for life that engulfed us as we (Irv Kempner, Aaron Kischel, Motti Pupkin, Dr. and Mrs. Jim Warshaw, and Sara Goodwin) traveled with students and adults on the 2014 International March of The Living program. The march is a two-week educational mission for Jewish junior and senior high school students, along with adults (including Holocaust survivors). We spent seven days in Poland learning and trying to understand, along with the survivors, this terrible period in

history. The adults on the trip also trav-eled to Lithuania (for two days) to visit sites of Jewish interest in Vilna and Kovno. After Poland, a large contingent of the participants (including all of the students) traveled to Israel for seven inspiring days. This was an exciting celebration of Jewish life and accomplishment.

The namesake March of The Living event, a 3-kilometer walk from Auschwitz to Birkenau on April 28, 2014, was the highlight of the trip. The March of The Living serves as a hopeful counterpoint to the experience of hundreds of thousands of camp inmates, forced by the Nazis to cross vast expanses of European terrain under the harshest of conditions – the infamous “death marches.” The April 28th program included a video about the plight of Hungarian Jewry during the Shoah, another video about the heroism of Han-nah Senesh, remarks from the President of Hungary (Mr. Janos Ader), remarks from Rabbi Israel Meir Lau (Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv-Yafo), and, in closing, a completion

of a sefer Torah (Torah scroll). This sefer Torah will be carried on each March of The Living from Auschwitz to Birkenau in future years. There were over 10,000 people of various nationalities, includ-ing many Israelis, who participated in the March of The Living observance on April 28th. Remarkably, this event was livestreamed over the internet, allowing families back home to share in this mo-mentous occasion.

It is impossible to relate the emotions of our visit to former concentration camps and towns without Jews where once were thriving Jewish communities in this ar-ticle. The students’ connection to Judaism, their identities, and the life choices they will make were enhanced beyond words. As an adult, please consider participating in the adult trip that will occur imme-diately after Passover 2015. In addition, please help support the student trip with the New England Delegation in 2016.

ServicesErev Rosh Hashanah we will join together in one service in the Weiss-man-Davis Sanctuary.

First Day Rosh Hashanah we will continue our custom of three servic-es: traditional style in both the Sanctuary and Berger Hall, and a third service in Founders Hall. Seating in all three services will be assigned. An additional lay-led, small group “chavurah” service is held in the Rosenstein Chapel throughout the High Holy Days.

Second Day Rosh Hashanah we will join together for the start of the morning services in Berger Hall before separating into services in the Sanctuary, Berger Hall., and Founders Hall. This year, seating will be open in both the Sanctuary and Berger Hall. If you have endowed seats in the Sanctuary that you would like to use, you will need to be in your seats by the start of the Torah service (10:30am), otherwise they will be considered open. The change this year is to accommodate a new service option in the Sanctuary, led by Rabbi Adam Greenwald and shlichat tzi-bur Amy Robinson, filled with song and zemirot. The service in Berger Hall, led by Rabbi Charlie Savenor and Cantor Steven Dress, and in Founders Hall, led by Rabbi Leslie Gordon, will remain traditional in style.

Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur we will continue our custom of three ser-vices in the Sanctuary, Berger Hall, and Founders Hall.

RemindersParking: To allow for the maximum number of parking spaces for our handicapped memberes, all spaces in our parking lot are reserved for those with Temple Israel special parking placards. All others must park outside our lot. Please observe all posted Sharon No Parking signs and pay attention to any police instructions. Your cooperation is appreciated.

If you have not made arrangements to receive a placard, please contact the Temple Office at 781-784-3986.

Tashlikh: Join us for Tashlikh on Thursday, September 25 at 5:30pm at Lake Massapoag. We will gather near the traffic circle at the boat launch. Please join us after this memorable tradition and return with us to the synagogue for Mincha at 6:30pm.

B.Y.O.Tallit: As in the past, the Temple’s supply of tal-litot is not sufficient to meet the needs of the HighHoly Days season. Please bring your own tallit to services if possible.

Ushers Needed: The Ritual Committee seeks volun-teer ushers for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Join a cadre of members who maintain a smooth and orderly flow of seating and honors during services. Information and training will be provided. Please contact [email protected].

Services Available to Homebound: We offer a phone link service, allowing homebound members to call in and hear our High Holy Day services from home. Please contact the Temple Office by September 18 to receive the dial-in number and passcode. Please also let us know if a mahzor is desired (it will be delivered before the High Holy Days).

High Holy Day Tickets: Tickets will be mailed out on Wednesday, September 10.

Youth and Family ServicesFamily Service New this year, and geared to families with children in kinder-garten through grade 6, our Family Service is open to all families and children who would like to attend. Led by rabbini-cal student Laura Bellows, this service, which will take place both days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, 9:45-10:30am in the Library, will focus on the Shacharit portion of our service, allowing families who are looking for a short period of time to pray and spend the holidays together. It will be a traditional service, but interactive in nature, allowing both children and families to participate. By ending at 10:30, parents will have plenty of time to attend their services, and children will be able to participate fully in youth services.

Kindergarten and First Grade 10:30am - 12:30pm, Classroom 8The K-1 service will remain the same as years past. Led by Jill Grassfield, this service will allow students the chance to learn about Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur through play, prayer, stories, yom tov-friendly crafts, and games.

Second Grade to Fifth Grade Session 1: 10:30 - 11:20am; Snack Break: 11:20 - 11:35am; Ses-sion 2: 11:40 - 12:30pmStudents will choose one of three choices for each 50 minute session. After checking in and receiving your child’s name tag, parents will escort their 2nd-5th grader to the appropri-ate classroom. After the first session, students will stay in their classroom for a snack, then move on to a second room if they would like, or stay in the room they initially chose. Detailed

descriptions of each room are listed below. Parents must pick-up their child promptly at 12:30pm. Any child not picked up will be escorted to the parent’s seat.

Session Choices for Second to Fifth Grade: Traditional Service, Classroom 4: Jesse Wolf, a member of our Religious School faculty, will be leading a traditional, but age appropriate, service for our 2nd-5th graders. The first 50-minute session will focus on the Torah Service, the second 50-minute session will focus on Musaf.

Discussion/Parsha Play, Classroom 3: Led by Barbara Fine, this room will feature holiday discussions, participatory dramatics and parsha play, as well as lessons from the holi-days.

Holiday Games and Activities, Classrooms 10-11: Shira Por-ter and last year’s Ramah Fellow Dani Nurick will be leading games and activities that are once again focused on lessons from the holidays as well as the High Holy Day Torah and Haftorah readings. Examples may include Jeopardy, craft-ing stories, large scale matching games, and more. Students in this room will most likely be broken up into two groups, 2nd/3rd grade and 4th/5th grade.

Sixth Grade to Twelfth Grade 10:30am - 12:30pm, LibraryLaura Bellows, a rabbinical student at Hebrew College, will help organize an age-appropriate teen service in coordination with our teens. Unlike in years past, where this service was 100% teen led, this year Laura will serve as a guide and leader, creat-ing a participatory teen service for our 6th-12th graders.

Parents/Guardians, please fill out the information below ONLY if you meet one of the following two criteria: you have a child who is not registered in our Religious School, or you are attending with a child who is not a child of synagogue mem-bers (a niece, nephew, grandchild, etc.)

HIGH HOLY DAYS

HIGH HOLY DAYS

What is Simchat Torah? Simchat Torah is when Jewish com-munities gather together for a day-long celebration marking the end of the reading of the Torah. At Temple Israel, it is a day filled with joyous singing, dancing, honors for two of our dedicated volunteers, and, of course, a festive luncheon! This is Temple Israel at its finest. Please join us on Friday, October 17 for this celebratory day!

A great day for connecting as a community, everyone will have a opportunity to have an aliyah (be called to the Torah), partic-ipate in hakafot (circling, going around with the Torahs), and break bread as a large Temple Israel family at the luncheon.

As in the past, there is no charge for our festive, fun-filled lun-cheon. It is our hope that you, our congregants, will help defray the cost by making a contribution, large or small, any amount is welcome. Our donors will be recognized in the Luach. Let’s have some fun and offer suggested donation categories:

yad $18crown $36Crown Royal $54Torah $72+

Please send your donation to Temple Israel – and don’t for-get to RSVP for the luncheon (we want to make sure there’s enough for all of us!) by visiting www.tisharon.org/simchatto-rah or getting in touch with the office.

Lulav and Etrog Order Form

q Yes, I/we would like to participate in the mitzvah of lulav and etrog by purchasing:

_____ set(s) of hiddur at $45 per set_____ set(s) of chinuch at $40 per set

Amount enclosed: $_____________Please make checks payable to Temple Israel, and return to the Temple office.

Name: __________________________________Address: ________________________________Phone: __________________________________Email: __________________________________

Get Ready to Shake... Sukkot without a lulav and etrog is like a bagel without cream cheese – it doesn’t make sense! Jewish law requires each person or family to purchase a set for use at home and in the syna-gogue. For your convenience, Temple Israel will have sets of lu-lavim and etrogim available for purchase. Two types of sets are available: hiddur are more expensive quality sets and hinnuch are educational sets. Both types are kosher and in full compli-ances with Jewish law.

Since considerable lead-time is needed to acquire and assemble lulavim and etrogim, please do not delay. Fill out the order form below and return it to the Temple Office with your check no later than Tuesday, September 23. Your complete set(s) will be available for pickup at the Temple in time for Sukkot!

Rosh Hashanah Observances in the Home The Holy Days of the many Yamim Tovim (holidays) which occur during the month of Tishrei take place both at the synagogue and in the home. The mood of the Holy Days and Festivals is both solemn and joyous, and can be greatly enriched by the following preparations and ceremonies.

On this page, many of the home rituals for Rosh Hashanah.

HIGH HOLY DAYS

Yom Kippur Observances in the Home Tradition prescribes that festive meals be eaten on the day preceding Yom Kippur. The final meal of the day, se’udah ha’mafseket, must be eaten before sundown, as we approach Kol Nidre. As its Hebrew name implies, the meal should be satisfying so that one is in the proper condition to fast the next full day.

HIGH HOLY DAYS

Sukkot Observances in the Home Sukkot is best celebrated in a sukkah, a temporary structure or hut built just for this festival. However, families without a sukkah may enhance their holiday by decorating their home with fresh vegetables or flowers, pulling in the agricultural theme of this holiday.
