Integrity, Respect, Pride and Unity
Dear Lucas House Parents
Hilton College 7/15/2015 Term 2
THE LUCAS VIEW
During this past week I had the privilege of taking my eight year old twins Reilly and Ella to watch a new
animated movie called Inside Out. It is an incredible tale of a young girl who, at an impressionable stage of her
life is forced to come to terms with her family leaving their beloved home to relocate to a big city. The story is
largely told from the point of view (experiences) of her emotions (actual characters) in the realm of her mind.
Whilst this seems abstract, it is absolutely brilliant and is poignant reminder of the importance of emotions and
memories in the life of a growing child. I am also reminded of the critical role we as parents (primarily) and
educators have to create room for children to feel and express their emotions (good or bad, happy or sad) and
to develop moments for important core memories (loving and instructive) to be developed that will shape the
personality of our boys into young men who are confident and joyful. At Hilton College our boys, through the
different experiences and people they encounter, are given opportunities to grow and learn on a daily basis,
developing the important memories and the emotional intelligence they need to succeed in the world. Here are
a few of our Lucas House memories from the past term.

soon.
ACADEMICS MARK ORDER 2
Academically, I was thrilled that an impressive number of our boys in the senior phase (not measured in junior phase)
achieved places on the Head of Academic’s Most Improved list. Many of our boys also continue to excel and working hard..
From a grade average point of view, this was a particularly tough term in that it included examinations for grades 8 - 11 and,
as a result, the percentage averages are predictably lower. Nevertheless, I would have liked our results to have been better
and it is evident that some of our boys are struggling to manage their time and studies effectively. In the coming term, new
measures are being put in place to help boys limit distraction and reach their goals.
Academic Achievers
The Following boys achieved a mark average above 80% (combined CASS and examination marks in grade 8 - 11):
Grade 12 Bhavik Morar 86% (7th in Grade) Ryan Chamberlain 83% (14th in Grade) Keagan Hope 80% Grade 11 Andrea Tonelli 89% (1st in Grade) Langa Dubazana 80% (8th in Grade) Grade 10 Vaughn Williams 85% (7th in Grade) Rasikan Moodley 83% (10th in Grade) Grade 9 James Hickinbotham 80% (15th in Grade) Grade 8 Thomas De Beer 81% (7th in Grade) Wium Smit 80% (9th in Grade) Commendation Awards The following boys received a Commendation Award this term for their industry (a composite score derived from indicators of behaviour and effort in each subject). SPORT
The winter sport season is always an exciting one with two of our core sports, rugby and hockey, at the centre of our
school support. A number of our boys represented the premier age group teams in these sports and I am very proud of
them for the example they set in their play. Just as thrilling for me, however, was having the opportunity to watch a
number of our boys who played in lower teams represent Hilton College with utter courage and determination – and
leading their peers as a result.

Notable Achievements:
Inter House Sport
Inter-House Hockey and Senior and Junior Inter-House Rugby were held this term. Courageous performances were put in
by all of our teams but it was our juniors rugby team who outdid themselves by shrugging off a low ranking and showing
immense determination and spirit to finish as winners of the Junior I-H competition. Well done Boys!!

Matric Dance
The matric dance was a wonderful celebration. In Lucas we went all out for our pre-dance function. Glenda did an
amazing job to transform our common room to a ‘Night with the Stars’. In the end all the boys and their dates had a
Youth Day: A fun day with multiple competitive activities. Lucas Ended in a credible 3rd place overall.

Our Lucas: Making a Difference: Campaign this term was a wonderful success. We spent two Sunday
afternoons at our outreach partners, Ndabezinhle Crèche, Ethembeni and the PMB SOS Village and we
had a great time playing with the children supported there and also working on improving their facilities.
Most pleasing, was that our boys were exceptional in giving their time, effort and enthusiasm in caring for
the children who are orphaned or who are from destitute homes. A major boost to our outreach was
being able to donate a new pair of shoes to every child at these organizations. This was thanks to Busi
Bhembe and TOMS shoes. A BIG thank you must also go to all of our parents who donated funds as well
as old stationary, blankets, clothing and sporting equipment – your donations have made all the difference
in helping us give to these worthwhile organizations. Lastly, thank you to all of our staff who willingly
gave up their time to accompany the boys on these outings.

OTHER NEWS AND EVENTS
EXCHANGE PROGRAMME
It is exciting that three of our Lucas boys were selected to participate in the Exchange Programme and will be
ambassadors for Lucas House and Hilton College. Luke Alcock will be attending Scotts College (Australia) in the
coming term, whilst Vaughn Williams (September) and Rasikan Moodley (January) will be attending Gordonstoun
and Harrow respectively.
Angus Dingley from St. Pius School in Australia spent the past term with us as a member of our Grade 10
Dormitory. He was thrilled to have been with us and he made life-long friends with all of the boys in the House. He
will be flying the Lucas flag high back in his hometown of Sydney.

GRADE 10/9 OUTING TO KINGSPARK RUGBY STADIUM
The majority of our grade 10 dormitory and some Grade 9 boys went to watch the Sharks play the Stormers in
the Durban franchise’s last home match of the Super 15 season. This was a very special occasion as not only
was it the last time that many senior springboks would be playing for the Sharks but particularly as a young
up-and-coming star, one of our very own sons, Cameron Wright (Class of 2013), was playing his final match
before leaving to take up a new contract with the French giants Montpellier. Cameron graciously came all the
way from Durban to present us with his Sharks jersey which we will be framing and hanging in our common
room.
