JUNE 2021 LAUGHTER A husband asked his wife, What do you love most about me, my great athletic ability or my quick intellect? His wife said, What I love most about you is your enormous sense of humor. We laugh at that, dont we? We dont stop laughing because we grow old. No, we grow old because we stop laughing. Someone once said, If you love Jesus, why not tell your face about it?Now, it is not that we need to go around laughing all of the time. It is a tough world we live in. There are a lot of pain and disappointments and problems going on in our lives. But, as Gods people, we are blessed with knowing that God is always with us, loving and forgiving us. God reminds us daily that we are all living on this side of the Resurrection. Laughter is a gift from God. Laughter is a brave and brilliant and bold statement that God is in control. Laughter reminds us that without forgiveness in Jesus, we are lost. We know that through our faith in Jesus, after every trouble in our lives, there is always an Easter to follow. So, laugh, even in the midst of your worries and troubles, because Jesus has the last laugh. Laugh because the grave is empty. Celebrate the joy you have in Jesus. Celebrate that Jesus has risen from the dead for you. BUILDING FUND Your continued giving to our Building Fund is greatly appreciated. Through your amazing generosity, we have now collected over $2,750,000 towards the building of our Life Center. JUNE 2021

LAUGHTER

A husband asked his wife, “What do you love most about me, my great athletic ability or my quick intellect?” His wife said, “What I love most about you is your enormous sense of humor.” We laugh at that, don’t we? We don’t stop laughing because we grow old. No, we grow old because we stop laughing. Someone once said, “If you love Jesus, why not tell your face about it?” Now, it is not that we need to go around laughing all of the time. It is a tough world we live in. There are a lot of pain and disappointments and problems going on in our lives. But, as God’s people, we are blessed with knowing that God is always with us, loving and forgiving us.

Sometime later this year, the Building Committee will share with you what the Life Center could look like, as well as what the cost could be. This Life Center will be a great addition to our ministry here of leading more people to Jesus and to heaven. You are making a big difference in this Life Center becoming a reality!

THE MESSENGER

It’s Your Best Day!

Which is better? To be a driver, who never uses his turn signal? Or to be driver, who turns his turn signal on AND NEVER TURNS IT OFF? Which driver do you trust more? I think about that often, everyday actually, because driving on DFW freeways is a big part of my commute life. I encounter both kinds of drivers, and I have to admit – I am more trusting of the guy who never uses his turn signal. His consistency in that department annoys me, but I can count on it. The driver who keeps his signal on – can’t trust that guy – ‘cause I don’t know if he will truly stay in his lane or not.

Lanes matter! Certainly in driving, but in other aspects of life as well. I know, for example, the ‘lane’ of my work. I know what I’m responsible for doing (writing newsletter articles for one!), and who is counting on me to get done what is in my ‘lane.’ I also know, that if I drift out of my ‘lane,’ I’m likely to step on someone’s toes and maybe even hurt their feelings. One of the purposes for the 10 Commandments is to act as a ‘curb.’ (Confirmation 101! Remember?) The ‘curb’ is a kind of lane marker. If you drift too far out of the lane, you’re likely to hit the curb. The Commandments do that for us: they tell us where God’s lines are and what are the limits He places on us. So, when He commands us to “Remember the Sabbath Day and keep it holy,” or “You shall not murder,” or “Honor your father and your mother….,” it’s God’s way of identifying the lanes in which He wants us to live. And, when we do, it’s our best life ever. Some people get offended that God would dare do that. They think that God is abusive because He is limiting their freedom or keeping them from living a full life. What they don’t realize or believe is that freedom without boundaries is chaos – and sinful people don’t live well in chaos. Imagine driving down LBJ with no line markers identifying whose lane is whose. The free-for-all that would be…. So, God, in His love for us gives us lines and lanes. It ‘curbs’ our selfish nature, even though sometimes we jump the curb. So, this month… enjoy the best days you can! And, oh, by the way? Thank you for using your turn signal…and turning it off! A Word From Vicar Lee Reasons to Celebrate

On May 16, we were able to have a Confirmation for twenty-two amazing youth in our late service! These current 8th graders have waited more than a year (due to the Pandemic) to be able to publicly profess their faith! Confirmation means "saying yes." In confirmation God's promise to the individual made at baptism is confirmed: God confirms His promise to be with the baptized always and he or she receives the blessing and a special greeting from the church in the form of a Bible verse that is thought of as a kind of life companion. It is a wonderful “reaffirmation of baptism” that takes place in church each year. It is not a graduation but more of a continuation in their faith walk. What makes this year different is that we are having two Confirmations just a few weeks apart! On May 31 through June 3, we will take 81 people to a Confirmation Camp, where 5th, 6th, and 7th graders will spend time learning about God’s Word and the Small Catechism, enjoying fellowship, games, and fun! On June 6, thirteen more students (current 7th graders) will be confirmed during our late service worship! These Confirmations are celebrations, and I am so thankful for the parents, volunteers, youth, staff, and Pastor Kollmann for their efforts in helping to make it possible! As these Confirmands have their special days, Pastor Kollmann will remind them of what it says in Acts, chapter 1, verse 8: “and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” They are witnesses, carrying the Gospel message wherever they are, showing their faith in their love and care for others. Congratulations, Confirmation Class of 2020 and 2021!

Notes from the Music Ministry

Glorious Days of Worship! What a special year of worship it has been! We have experienced services in person and Live streamed, celebrating God’s truth without ceasing! His Word continues to strengthen us, giving us encouragement, grace, forgiveness and joy for our lives. We have updated our screens to better serve our Lord and the congregation.

As we move into the summer months, here is what is scheduled for our services.

June 6-Second Sunday after Pentecost-Confirmation In the 11:00 service, 18 of our young people will publicly profess their Christian faith, and pledge to remain faithful to God and His Word. It is a special opportunity for our congregation to encourage, celebrate and join with them in this common faith that we share. The Confirmands will celebrate their first Communion together as adult members of Messiah.

June 13-Third Sunday after Pentecost –Holy Communion

June 20-Fourth Sunday after Pentecost-Father’s Day In both services, Vicar Lee will have a special Children’s message, as we honor our heavenly Father and our earthly fathers, grandfathers, stepfathers and God fathers.

June 27-Fifth Sunday after Pentecost –Holy Communion

Notes of Thanks

Brenda Mears has served in the Music Ministry for 23 years in the Joyful Ringers handbell choir. Her expertise has been essential to the choir’s success and development over the years. It was our privilege recently to honor her with a special plaque for her years of faithful ringing. Thank you, Brenda! Karen Eichinger has served in the Music Ministry, using her outstanding talents in music leadership and performance to enrich our worship services. Through directing the Choristers, adding her expertise on flute to the orchestra and offering beautiful, heartfelt anthems in worship, Karen has touched many with her extraordinary gifts. It has been a joy to serve with her at Messiah. Thank you, Karen! Music Ministry members who serve as vocalists, instrumentalists, production team, worship planning and directors, thank you for your continued dedication to this ministry with your selfless giving of time and talent to enrich our worship services. It is a joy to serve with you, as we praise the Lord!

Messiah Serves: Social Ministries and Outreach Touching Lives Through Christ

Dawn Johnson – 972-948-8966 – [email protected]

The mission of our Outreach Ministries is to be Jesus’ hands to our church, city, national, and international community. We do this through weekly opportunities for hands-on service such as those listed below and also through contributions to

community charities such as Network of Community Ministries and the Assistance Center of Collin Country, wonderful organizations who are equipped to deal with the long-term needs of struggling individuals.

MITZI HAD A GREAT GRAZING TIME AT MESSIAH! I want to extend a THANK YOU to those who supported the NETWORK’s Mitzi Milk Fund that we hosted throughout the month of April. We will be able to donate $620 To the NETWORK for fresh milk given to families with children. NETWORK is based in Richardson, Texas and has a service area encompassing fourteen zip codes in Dallas County, with over 70% of those served coming from Lake Highlands of the

Dallas area in addition to Garland. NETWORK is a non-denominational, community-based organization with currently three divisions: Emergency Services, providing food, shelter, clothing and utility services to children, adults, and seniors; the Adolescent and Children’s Clinic, meeting the acute care and dental needs of uninsured children; and Senior’s Net, dedicated to providing those 60+ with the right resources to live independently in their own homes. SUNDAY, MAY 9TH – SUNDAY, JUNE 20TH Mother’s Day through Father’s Day

It’s called Baby Bottle Boomerang because you distribute empty baby bottles to church congregations, and just like a well-tossed boomerang, they come back to you full of coins, currency and checks. The Baby Bottle Boomerang is

one of the most effective fundraisers for pro-life ministries in use today. It helps meet financial needs and increases awareness in the community about their ministry. http://www.plansforyou.com/BabyBottleBoomerang.aspx Baby Bottle Boomerang will run from Mother’s Day to Father’s Day. Donations collected will be given to the Prestonwood Pregnancy Center. Prestonwood Pregnancy Center began as a ministry of Prestonwood Baptist Church in 1991. The Pregnancy Center is a separate nonprofit, providing free and confidential guidance, pregnancy tests, early pregnancy sonograms, educational classes and post-abortion support groups. Our friendly and well-trained client advocates meet with clients individually to offer information and support both during and after an unplanned pregnancy. To learn more about the Prestonwood Pregnancy Center services and mission please stop by the Social Ministries table located across from the gift shop. LOOKING AHEAD! Our school supply drive is a fun and successful project. Summer will be over all too soon and children will be heading back to classes! Messiah will be ready to help with our “School Bus List”. Look for upcoming details. I’m looking forward to this year’s collection drive.

The School Supply Project is committed to the belief that a positive self-image is essential to the learning experience of the well-educated child. To enhance the self-image, we will provide school supplies to the disadvantaged students in the Plano Independent School District. Through contributions of money and donations-in-kind from Resurrection Lutheran Church and other churches, the business community, school groups, and individuals, we will distribute these supplies to children identified as "in

need" by social service agencies and school officials. http://theschoolsupplyproject.org/index.html

Dear Members of Our Messiah Family, We can’t thank everyone enough for the outpouring of love and care after the loss of our sweet wife, mother, and grandmother. What a blessing our dear Ellarea was to everyone she met. We cherish all of the wonderful memories of her shared by so many of you. Thank you to Pastor Kollmann, Ellen, Dorothy, and Toby for an absolutely beautiful service. It was all exactly what she wanted. Thank you also to Bill Swan, Toby, and Vicar Lee for the recording, live stream and YouTube link. Many were able to see her service that couldn’t make it in person. Thank you to the ladies that provided a delicious lunch following the service. Truly thankful for our church family. The family of Ellarea Poeck, J.D., Janet, Scott, Clayton, Ariana, Kim and Dan

Ed was the kind of person who made everybody feel like somebody special. He was kind, generous (to a fault) and touched so many of us along the way. I’m so grateful for the love, affection, and support that has been poured out to both of us, especially to me following his passing. Thank you, Norma Hester We'd like to thank all the fellow members of Messiah who have shown their love and caring with cards, calls, visits, food and prayers during our time of loss of our daughter, Debbie. You are our great family. Gordon & Anita Hanson
