On this Trinity Sunday, in order to best present the subject of the Trinity, and since I am not a theological scholar this article is excerpts from the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC).
Para 234 – “The mystery of the Most Holy Trinity is the central mystery of Christian faith and life. It is the mystery of God in himself. It is therefore the source of all the other mysteries of faith, the light that enlightens them. It is the most fundamental and essential teaching in the “hierarchy of the truths of faith.” The whole history of salvation is identical with the history of the way and the means by which the one true God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, reveals himself to men “and reconciles and unites with himself those who turn away from sin.”
Para 237 - “The Trinity is a mystery of faith in the strict sense, one of the “mysteries that are hidden in God, which can never be known unless they are revealed by God.” To be sure, God has left traces of his Trinitarian being in his work of creation and in his Revelation throughout the Old Testament. But his inmost Being as Holy Trinity is a mystery that is inaccessible to reason alone or even to Israel’s faith before the Incarnation of God’s Son and the sending of the Holy Spirit.”
Para 249 – “From the beginning, the revealed truth of the Holy Trinity has been at the very root of the Church’s living faith, principally by means of Baptism. It finds its expression in the rule of baptismal faith, formulated in the preaching, catechesis, and prayer of the Church.
Para 250 – “During the first centuries the Church sought to clarify its Trinitarian faith, both to deepen its own understanding of the faith and to defend it against the errors that were deforming it. This clarification was the work of the early councils, aided by the theological work of the Church Fathers and sustained by the Christian people’s sense of the faith.”
Para 253 – “The Trinity is One. We do not confess three Gods, but one God in three persons, the “consubstantial Trinity.”
Para 254 – “The divine persons are really distinct from one another. “God is one but not solitary.”
Para 255 - “The divine persons are relative to one another. Because it does not divide the divine unity, the real distinction of the persons from one another resides solely in the relationships which relate them to one another.
Para 258 – “The whole divine economy is the common work of the three divine persons. For as the Trinity has only one and the same nature, so too does it have only one and the same operation: “The Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit are not three principles of creation but one principle.”
Para 259 – “Being a work at once common and personal, the whole divine economy makes known both what is proper to the divine persons and their one divine nature.”
O my God, Trinity whom I adore, help me forget myself entirely so to establish myself in you, unmovable and peaceful as
if my soul were already in eternity.

Church Observes Fortnight for Freedom
June 21 - July 4
Citing continued threats to Catholics' ability to practice their faith through service to the poor and vulnerable, the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has called on the faithful to observe a third Fortnight for Freedom.
The Diocese of Arlington will host: "What's at Stake?"
a special program outlining current threats to religious liberty, and
Holy Hour on Saturday, June 28
St. Joseph's Church, Herndon
featuring Dr. John Garvey, president of The Catholic University of America
A panel discussion will follow with Garvey, Jeanne Monahan, president of the March for
Life Education and Defense Fund, and Bishop Paul
Loverde.
The Fortnight began in 2012 in response to, among other threats, the federal government's HHS contraceptive and abortifacient mandate, which impinges on the religious liberty of Catholics and other people of faith. The two weeks begin June 21st and end July 4th with special Masses in Baltimore and Washington, DC.
Archbishop of Baltimore William Lori, chair of the U.S. Bishops' ad hoc committee on religious liberty, said:
"People who value their Catholic faith will understand that there is an organic connection between what we believe and how we practice our faith in service well beyond the borders of the church,". "We want to be able to practice it unabashedly, whether in church or in the workplace or as part of church ministry. We don't think we should have to compromise our beliefs in order to observe."
Prayer for the Protection of Religious Liberty
O God our Creator, from your provident hand we have received our right to
life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as your people and given us the right
and the duty to worship you, the only true God, and your Son, Jesus Christ.
Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world,
bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society.
We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty.
Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are
threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard
on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith.
Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters
gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation,
so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome—
for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us—
this great land will always be "one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty
and justice for all." We ask this through Christ our Lord.

Every June we honor fathers. The first Mother's Day was celebrated in 1914, but a holiday honoring fathers did not become official until 1966, when
President Lyndon Johnson declared that the third Sunday in June would be Father's Day. President Richard Nixon made this proclamation permanent in 1972. The idea for Father's Day is attributed to Sonora Dodd, who was raised by her father after her mother's death during childbirth. While listening to a sermon at church on Mother's Day, she thought about all her father had done for her and her siblings and decided fathers should have a day, too. Because Dodd's father was born in June, she encouraged churches in her area, Spokane, Wash., to honor fathers that month. The first Father's Day was celebrated in Spokane in 1910. Over the years, the idea spread, and people lobbied Congress to establish the holiday. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson, who had signed a proclamation establishing Mother's Day, approved the idea, but never signed a proclamation for it. In 1924, President Calvin Coolidge made it a national event to "establish more intimate relations between fathers and their children and to impress upon fathers the full measure of their obligations."

The story is told that Franklin D. Roosevelt and one of his close friends, Bernard Baruch,
talked late into the night one evening at the White House. At last, President Roosevelt suggested
that they go out into the Rose Garden and look at the stars before going to bed. They went out
and looked into the sky for several minutes, peering at a nebula with thousands of stars. Then the
President said, "All right, I think we feel small enough now to go in and go to sleep."
The wonder of the power and wisdom of God puts things in perspective for us humans. It was
not an accident, but the result of a Divine Plan; planets, stars, plants, birds, fish, and animals
were all created by God. And the climax of God's creation was humanity. How complex and
mind-boggling is our physical construction! Chemically, the body is unequalled for complexity.
Each one of its 30 trillion cells is a mini chemical factory that performs about 10,000 chemical
functions. With its 206 bones, 639 muscles, 4 million pain sensors in the skin, 750 million air sacs
in the lungs, 16 million nerve cells and 30 trillion cells in total, the human body is remarkably
designed for life.
And the brain! The human brain and nervous system compose the most complex arrangement
of matter anywhere in the universe. One scientist estimated that our brain, on the average,
processes over 10,000 thoughts and concepts each day. Bill Bryson in his book, A Short History of
Nearly Everything, says it is a miracle that we even exist. Trillions of atoms come together for
approximately 650,000 hours (the average span of human life), and then begin to silently
disassemble and go off to other things. There never was something like us before and there never
will be something like us again.
But for 650,000 hours the miracle that is uniquely us exists. One could spend years just dealing
with the marvelous intricacies and majesty of God's creation. We are, as the Psalmist states
"fearfully and wonderfully made."
No wonder we cannot understand the mystery of a Triune God!

Flag Day, June 14, 2014
Flag Folding Ceremony
In the United States, Flag Day is celebrated on June 14. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened on that day in 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. The United States Army also celebrates the Army Birthday on this date; Congress adopted "the American continental army" after reaching a consensus position in the Committee of the Whole on June 14, 1775.
In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day; in August 1949, National Flag Day was established by an Act of Congress.
For many years the ceremony has been performed at retirement ceremonies, as well as funerals. It is a tradition that came to being on its own. Through the years the meaning of the ceremony has been a solemn, dignified, and comforting ceremony for all present. During the Flag Folding Ceremony, specific meanings have come to be ascribed to each of the 13 folds. The meaning of each fold follows:
Fold #1 Is the symbol of life Fold #2 Is the symbol of our belief of eternal life. Fold #3 Is made in honor and remembrance of the veterans departing our ranks who gave a portion of their lives in defense of our country to attain peace throughout the world. Fold #4 Represents our weaker nature, for as American citizens trusting, it is to Him we turn to in times of peace as well as in time of war for His guidance. Fold #5 Is a tribute to our country. In the words of Stephan Decatur, “Our country, in dealing with other countries may she always be right, but it is still our country right or wrong.” Fold #6 Is where our hearts lie. It is with our heart that we pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the Republic for which it stands, one Nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all. Fold #7 Is a tribute to our Armed Forces, for it is through the Armed Forces that we protect our country and our flag against all enemies, whether they be found within or without the boundaries of our borders. Fold #8 Is a tribute to the one who entered into the valley of the shadow of death, that we might see the light of day, and to honor mother, for whom it flies on Mother’s Day. Fold #9 Is a tribute to womanhood; for it has been through their faith, their love, loyalty and devotion that the character of the men and women who have made this country great has been molded. Fold #10 Is a tribute to the father; for he, too, has given his sons and daughters for defense of our country since they were first born. Fold #11 In the eyes of a Hebrew citizen represents the lower portion of the seal of King David and King Solomon, and glorifies in their eyes, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Fold #12 In the eyes of the Christian citizen, represents an emblem of eternity and glorifies, in their eyes, God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Fold #13 When the flag is completely folded, the stars are uppermost reminding us of our Nation’s motto, “In God We Trust”. After the flag is completely tucked, in it takes on the appearance of a cocked hat, ever reminding us of the soldiers who served under General George Washington, and the Sailors and Marines who served under Admiral John Paul Jones, who were followed by comrades and shipmates in the Armed Forces of the United States, preserving for us the rights, privileges, and freedoms we enjoy today.
The next time you see a Flag ceremony honoring someone who has served our country, either in the Armed Forces or in our civilian services, such as the police or fire departments, keep in mind all the important reasons of each and every movement. They have paid the ultimate sacrifice for all of us by honoring our Flag and our Country.
