THE COLLECT - Proper 25 (Page 180 BCP) Almighty and everlasting God, increase in us the gifts of faith, hope, and charity; and, that we may obtain what you promise, make us love what you command; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Amen.

REFLECTION FIRST LESSON: In the Old Testament lesson Israel is called to a keen

sense of Justice and social responsibility toward the stranger, the widow and orphan,

and the poor.

1st LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Jennifer Watson 9:15a.m. - Catherine Blackman

FIRST LESSON (OLD TESTAMENT): FIRST LESSON (OLD TESTAMENT): FIRST LESSON (OLD TESTAMENT): FIRST LESSON (OLD TESTAMENT): Exodus 22:21-27

"You shall not wrong a stranger or oppress him, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. You shall not afflict any widow or orphan. If you do afflict them, and they cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry; and my wrath will burn, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives shall become widows and your children fatherless. "If you lend money to any of my people with you who is poor, you shall not be to him as a creditor, and you shall not exact interest from him. If ever you take your neighbor's garment in pledge, you shall restore it to him before the sun goes down; for that is his only covering, it is his mantle for his body; in what else shall he sleep? And if he cries to me, I will hear, for I am compassionate.

REFLECTION THE PSALM: The Lord makes fruitful those who choose the way of

righteousness.

PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: PSALM: 1 (7:30a.m. - Page 471 BCP)

1. BLESSED is the man that hath not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stood in the way of sinners : and hath not sat in the seat of the scornful. 2. But his delight is in the law of the Lord : and in his law will he exercise himself day and night. 3. And he shall be like a tree planted by the water-side : that will bring forth his fruit in due season. 4. His leaf also shall not wither : and look, whatsoever he doeth, it shall prosper. 5. As for the ungodly, it is not so with them : but they are like the chaff, which the wind scattereth away from the face of the earth. 6. Therefore the ungodly shall not be able to stand in the judgement : neither the sinners in the congregation of the righteous. 7. But the Lord knoweth the way of the righteous : and the way of the ungodly shall perish.

REFLECTION SECOND LESSON: In this reading Paul recalls his first visit to the

Thessalonians, the troubles he endured, and the straightforward and gentle way in

which he presented the gospel.

2nd LESSON: 7:30a.m. - Sandra Waterman 9:15a.m. - Mothers’ Union

SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: SECOND LESSON: 1 Thessalonians 2:1-8

For you yourselves know, brethren, that our visit to you was not in vain; but though we had already suffered and been shamefully treated at Philip'pi, as you know, we had courage in our God to declare to you the gospel of God in the face of great opposition. For our appeal does not spring from error or uncleanness, nor is it made with guile; but just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please men, but to please God who tests our hearts. For we never used either words of flattery, as you know, or a cloak for greed, as God is witness; nor did we seek glory from men, whether from you or from others, though we might have made demands as apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, like a nurse taking care of her children. So, being affectionately desirous of you, we were ready to share with you not only the gospel of God but also our own selves, because you had become very dear to us.

GRADUAL HYMN - 268

REFLECTION THE GOSPEL: In the Gospel Jesus presents the double commandment

of love for God and neighbour, and then asks a question concerning whose son the

Christ is. The context of this passage is the effort by certain Jewish officials to test Jesus,

hoping to force him to make an unwise or unpopular comment. Jesus first responds by

teaching that all the law and the prophetic words depend for their understanding on the

commandments of love. He then asks his own question. Using an argumentative style of

the time, Jesus shows how King David (considered to be the author of the Psalms) called

the Christ his Lord. Thus, at the very least, the Christ must be more than the son of David.

Christians believe this Christ to be Jesus and trust that through him disciples may learn

to love both God and neighbor.

THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: THE GOSPEL: Matthew 22:34-46

When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they came together. And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, to test him. "Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?" And he said to him, "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets." Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question, saying, "What do you think of the Christ? Whose son is he?" They said to him, "The son of David." He said to them, "How is it then that David, inspired by the Spirit, calls him Lord, saying, `The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand, till I put thy enemies under thy feet'? If David thus calls him Lord, how is he his son?" And no one was able to answer him a word, nor from that day did any one dare to ask him any more questions.

Bidding Prayer

Let us pray that the commandments of God shall be obeyed at all times and in all places.

Grant to the members of the Church unreserved love for God and unselfish love for all people…May the glory of Christ be proclaimed as we seek to fulfil the great law of love.

Send a new spirit of love into the disputes between nations and races…Where there is suspicion bring trust, where there is anger bring compassion…Give peace in all places of war and violence.

In all we do and say, in our lives with families, friends and neighbours, let us show the love which is demanded from those who claim to love God…May the Lord of all love rule in our hearts.

Have mercy on those who are torn by anger and bitterness, who have never known love or have lost the way of loving….Restore their peace and bring them new hope.

We pray for the departed, for those who loved deeply in this world and for those who failed in love…May they be received together into the love that is everlasting.

We pray through Christ in whom the law and the Prophets are fulfilled. Amen.

1. On Wednesday 22 October, the St. Peter’s Men’s Fellowship presented a park bench to the Roland Edwards Primary School. The presentation was made by the President, Mr. Grantley Lamming.

2. Organizations are asked to start their planning for next year. This is to facilitate a meeting of the Pastoral Committee.

3. Persons needing envelopes for 2015 are asked to give their names to the Rector. Thanks to all members who have adjusted to the monthly envelope system. This continues to be working well, as we have been able to reduce the cost of the envelopes and also the wastage. The persons responsible for the counting of money on Sundays are finding the job much easier.

4. Tickets are available for the Fellowship Day on Sunday 09 November. We are going to Codrington College. Please check with Ms. Celeste Bowen at the Day Care Centre or get your tickets after Church.

5. We are in the process of assembling a tent to house the playground for the Day Care Centre. The tent has been donated by Mrs. Regine Sixt and her Charity “Drying Little Tears” will provide the equipment for the area.

Persons who pledged to sponsor arrangements are asked to pay in the money as soon

as possible.

Pink Sunday

The Third Sunday in Advent is dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, with the lighting of the Rose Candle in the Advent Wreath. This year it is our intention to focus on the subject of Breast Cancer, which is a challenge for many women in our society and Church. It is hoped that we will use ‘Pink’ as the liturgical colour for the day; with the Mothers’ Union donating a pink chasuble to be worn by the Clergy on the day. Two pink stoles, matching Burse and Chalice Veil will be much appreciated. With members wearing pink to show solidarity and prayerful support of sufferers. This gives a wonderful opportunity to bring our liturgy in line with this important aspect of human life. I am asking for your support in making this a meaningful celebration.

Casual Sunday

The Sunday before Christmas, the Fourth Sunday of Advent will be celebrated as casual Sunday. We are invited to wear jeans and T/shirts.

Smile: A mother wanted to teach her daughter a moral lesson. She gave the little girl a quarter and a dollar for church. "Put whichever one you want in the collection plate and keep the other for yourself," she told the girl. When they were coming out of the church, the mother asked her daughter which amount she had given. "Well," said the little girl, "I was going to give the dollar, but just before the collection the man in the pulpit said that we should all be cheerful givers. I knew I'd be a lot more cheerful if I gave the quarter, so I did."
