BOYS AND GIRLS CLUB CHORUS

PRESENTS HOLIDAY SONGS

The Boys and Girls Club - West Sanford Branch Chorus

was founded in 2010, by Heathrow Women’s Club long-time member

Miriam Weston

To celebrate this special season, this chorus of young voices

will present an entertaining selection of songs for the holidays.

The Heathrow Women’s Club has been a strong supporter of the

West Sanford Branch of Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Florida since 2008. During that time, our women have given generously of their time

to mentor children and organize clubs which have included … cooking, knitting, public speaking classes, a course called

"Money Matters," which instructs the children in investments,

growing a vegetable garden and setting up a library.

We continue to help support the children in this organization in any way needed!

November was an extremely busy time for the

Heathrow Women’s Club!

We kicked off the month with our first

Heathrow Community Yard Sale at Sawyer Lake Park,

and I’m pleased to report that thanks to the efforts of

Madelyn Faillaci, Christine Gillen,

and the Ways & Means Committee,

we raised $2,000.00!

which will go directly to our chosen charities.

On November 8th, we held our first

New Member Orientation of the year …

at the home of Sandy Schutt and welcomed six wonderful and interesting new ladies to our club.

Be sure to introduce yourself to our new members at our functions and monthly luncheon meetings.

I’d also like to thank the Board and Hospitality Committee Members for providing delicious refreshments.

On November 17th, Mercedes-Benz of Sanford hosted an elegant Cocktail Party for

Heathrow Women’s Club Members and their guest in recognition of our 25 years of service to the community.

For their generosity, many thanks to … Julie Miller, General Manager

Carol Simonelli, Customer Relations Manager and Souraya Sarriedine, Concierge

Turning now to our upcoming events, at our December Luncheon Meeting,

we will be treated to a performance by The Sanford Boys & Girls Club Chorus.

Following the luncheon, we will hold our annual Bake Sale.

Remember to bring along your home baked goodies and get ready to buy …

all of those wonderful desserts for the holidays. As always, monetary donations are also welcomed.

Thanks to Sandy Schutt and Rosemary Robinson for again organizing this event.

We have begun working on our annual benefit “An Evening in Paradise,”

to be held Poolside at the Heathrow Racquet Club on April 13th.

We have many volunteer opportunities available, and if you have a little time over the next couple of months,

we could certainly use your help! If interested, please contact Madelyn Faillaci or Christine Gillen.

This is a wonderful way to get involved in our club and meet many new friends along the way,

while helping us raise the much needed funds for our deserving charities.

At this joyful time of year, I’d like to extend my warmest wishes for

a safe, healthy and peaceful holiday season to you and all the special people in your lives.

My Best, Ellen

Heathrow Women's Club

25th Silver Anniversary Party

On Saturday evening, November 17th, our members and their guests enjoyed a fabulous

"Celebratory Cocktail Party" in honor of their friendship and service to our community.

It was just 25 years and three months ago that the Club was founded on August 17, 1987,

by a few neighborhood women who gathered as friends and from this initial meeting the

Heathrow Women's Club was formed.

The mission of the Heathrow Women's Club embodies the spirit of good fellowship and

harmony among its members while supporting their chosen charities benefiting women

and children in the community. Over the past 25 years, HWC as demonstrated a remarka-

ble ability to bond together to raise nearly one million dollars in donations and services for

deserving organizations in the Seminole County. We have made a difference … and

people like Julie Miller, General Manager; Carol Simonelli, Customer Service Manager

and Souraya Sarriedine, of Mercedes-Benz of Sanford, recognized this fact. They want-

ed to show their appreciation for all we have done by hosting this very special evening for

our members. We can't thank them enough for this thoughtful gift of appreciation.

As members and their guests arrived they were welcomed to a showroom filled with bal-

loons, high-top tables with beautiful table decorations, created by the HWC Anniversary

Decorating Committee, under the direction of Claris Koglin. Members were invited to

taste appetizers, desserts and enjoy drinks prepared by several local restaurants and busi-

nesses. Everyone enjoyed the fabulous music by Tom Yeaser and his guitar. Members and

their guests were able to have photos taken by a local photographer. Everyone received

raffle tickets for several fabulous drawings. Many restaurant certificates were given away

as well as baskets of holiday goodies. The ultimate give-away was a drawing for a week-

end use of a Mercedes-Benz. Everyone went home with something as Mercedes-Benz

handed out bags of goodies to all. It was a fun-filled evening!

The evening also included special guests such as Jeff Triplett, Mayor of Sanford, who

spoke about HWC's impact in Seminole County and also served up a "toast" to our mem-

bers. Representatives from two of our chosen charities, Rhonda Santolin of Bags of

Hope, and Faith Shorthouse of Seminole County Friends of Abused Children also were

introduced and took time to tell about their organizations.

It is with great pleasure that I thank all the members of the 25th Anniversary Committee

for their contributions and work in making our celebrations happen throughout the year.

It is also with great pleasure that I thank all the members of HWC for all you do …

THANK YOU!

Martha Halcrow

25th Anniversary Chair

It is clear after looking at nearly 25 years of issues of The Newz

that the Heathrow Women’s Club has created a tradition, a culture, that is passed on year after year.

The characters may change, but the plot is essentially the same each year, with additions and variations,

by which we add to the tradition every year … a comforting thought in this time of change.

Remember the song “Tradition” from “Fiddler on the Roof?” Tradition - that’s just the way we do things, like the special Heathrow rules for Canasta, or Mira Dordevic’s “basket

of cookies” offered every Christmas, or the Bake Sale or Book Clubs, Bridge, the Gala, and many other activities.

Ellen Yeaser as president is becoming a tradition. She does such a good job that we keep asking her back.

These past few years have seen a few innovations that are already becoming traditions.

The Happy Hour Social, Bingo, the Purse Auction, and perhaps the very successful Yard Sale.

The Newz has also undergone big changes in the past few years,

adding multiple photos, then color photos, and now it is totally online.

Our website was created and has been enhanced over the years largely through the talents of

Clety Gomez (who is herself a tradition) so that we can easily find photos, back issues,

Spotlight articles on Club Members, and also make reservations online for the monthly luncheons.

Some interesting monthly programs in the past decade have included presentations by …

A professional appraiser, a program on feng shui, and another on the interpretation of dreams.

Another program focused on investing in fine art, jewelry, antiques and collectibles;

granted this was before the Great Recession, so maybe those investments didn’t work out too well after all.

One past activity that we might want to bring back is games night - sounds like fun.

Another social activity featured a Chocolate Ladies Night Out:

each participant had a full pound of chocolate to mold or decorate or even to eat.

Membership has varied over the years.

In 2002 it was as high as 157 members, and by 2003 it was up to 171.

For the last several years, membership has stabilized somewhere between 110-120.

Our new member events have gone from teas to coffees to hors d’oeuvres and wine, to everyone’s delight.

Our charities have varied over the years …

But were increasingly focused on services for women and children, as they now are exclusively.

An innovation that began in 2009, Somebody’s Hungry -

the collection of food at our monthly meetings for donation to charity, has continued to grow.

The collection of food, and of toiletries, at our most recent meeting was one of the largest yet.

Many people in the area have been helped by these donations.

It has been fun looking through The Newz,

Seeing people we know in their younger incarnations, and seeing members who have left us.

Some have come back, some have come way back: Carolyn Taylor, our third President,

rejoined us this year and she looks very much like her pictures from those much earlier newsletters.

We the members and the Heathrow Women’s Club have all aged well.

Keep it up: we must be doing something right!

Please consider Heathrow Women's Club Charities as your Charity of choice, when making a donation to

commemorate a special occasion, show appreciation or offer condolences. The Special Donation Form can be

found on our website, www.heathrowwomensclub.com or contact Claris Koglin. Mail the form along with your

check made payable to Heathrow Women's Club Charities, Inc. to our PO Box (address is on the form). Notification will be sent to the individual you are honoring and you will be sent an acknowledgement of your

donation. This is a wonderful way to show someone that you are thinking of them and also help our charities.

The Story Continues…. By Stephanie Strass

The New Century …. and More Tradition.

St. Peter's Episcopal Church thanks HWC for their generous contribution of food.

It was used to fill the Thanksgiving baskets for the Pathways to Home charity.

BAGS OF HOPE

A few members have been going to the English Estates School

to distribute bags of food and books to the children involved in the Kids Club Program.

BOYS & GIRLS CLUB

The library is up and running and the children seem to be enjoying it immensely.

Tutoring volunteers are still needed. Andi McNally met with Alicia Hodge,

the Regional Director for Seminole and Brevard counties,

Darlese Pender, the Director of the West Sanford Branch

and Kelvin Curry, the Program Director

to see if we can work out a more workable tutoring situation there.

This meeting will take place in early January. Details to follow.

A cooking class is scheduled for December 19th

and Clety Gomez has graciously agreed to oversee the planning

as Joyce Moreno will be away until the day before.

SAFEHOUSE OF SEMINOLE

Many volunteers are needed and Patti Neveleff provided a detailed schedule of times

when people are needed. If you are able or interested in participating,

please email Andi McNally at [email protected]

FRIENDS OF ABUSED CHILDREN

Valerie Hampton-Mason and Andi McNally met with Faith Shorthouse and Sharon Graham,

Director of the Guardian Ad Litem Program, for a tour of the area that will be used

as a waiting room on Mondays and Tuesdays for children waiting to testify in Family Court.

The room has great potential to be "kid friendly".

More information will be available at the December Luncheon.

The Secret Santa Program did really well!

All the names of the children were distributed at the November luncheon.

PLEASE REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR GIFTS TO THE DECEMBER MEETING UNWRAPPED.

Thank you for your continued efforts and support.

to attend this wonderful event!

More details will be coming in subsequent submissions.

The Holiday Season is Upon Us!!!

And the Ways and Means committee members are like little elves raising money for our charities!

On November 3rd, we held our first Yard Sale at Sawyer Lake Park from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

As most of you are aware by now, it was a resounding success!

Over $2000 was raised for our deserving charities.

We would like to give a big thanks to all of you who donated items for sale and to

those committee members who gave many hours of hard work to make this event so successful!

Lastly, in an effort to increase the amount of money available for our charities,

the Ways and Means committee has been diligently working to improve our sponsorship program.

Instead of simply asking for Gala sponsors …

We would like the local business community to consider sponsoring us all year! If anyone knows of or has a contact at a local business that you think we should contact …

Please let Madelyn or Christine know!

Happy Holidays!

Member Spotlight By Bink Myton Carolyn was born in west Tennessee; her early and teen years were spent in

Jackson, MS. She graduated from Mississippi College with a B.S. degree in

education so she comes by her Southern accent legitimately. Carolyn is mar-

ried to her husband, Michael, has two sons and two grandchildren.

After she and Michael were married they moved to New Orleans where Car-

olyn taught second grade for three years. After her boys were born, she stayed at home to raise them and didn’t go back to teaching until after the

family moved to Virginia, where her husband’s job took them. Once again

Carolyn taught elementary school as they moved around. When they moved

to Jacksonville, FL, she began teaching elementary school and then moved up

to teaching middle school gifted students. She enjoyed being able to delve into history and literature and encourage the students to do projects in music and art. Carolyn describes herself as “a teacher of the gifted.” She retired in

Jacksonville ten years ago. They moved further south for Michael’s job and live in Magnolia Plantation.

Since she retired, Carolyn, an expert seamstress, is enjoying sewing - large projects like draperies, but now that she has a granddaughter, she is having fun making clothes for her. After having two boys and a grandson first, being able

to make dresses is a delight. She is currently making her granddaughter a red silk dress, probably to be worn at

Christmas. Talking to her about shopping for fabrics lets you know that sewing is one of her passions. A few months

ago Carolyn went to New York and spent a great deal of time in the fabric stores, like MOOD, which is where the contestants on Project Runway buy their fabrics. She has also been doing some painting (walls, she explains) in their

home and has become active in HWC, in the short time she has been a member.

Carolyn works on public speaking once a week with fifth graders at the Boys and Girls Club, doing monologues and short plays and helping them to learn to “speak up and speak out”. She is a member of the Social Committee. She

also was active in the planning and execution of the activities for the 25th HWC anniversary. When they first moved

to Magnolia seven years ago, Carolyn was active in the women’s organizations in that neighborhood, but since those

seem to have not continued, she is happy to have found HWC and many new friends. She also loves to go to the bal-

let, so anyone who is interested in going to the ballet should contact her.

Since one son lives in New York City and the other (with the grandchildren) lives in the Dallas area, Carolyn fre-

quently travels to visit them. She admits she goes to Dallas more often than New York. Carolyn and Michael have

also traveled to Canada, Europe, Holland, Germany and, a favorite, Switzerland.

Carolyn Boland is an enthusiastic new member of the HWC and has many talents and ideas to share with us.

On November 8, 2012, at the home of Sandy Schutt,

the Hospitality Committee and the Board hosted 6 new members …

Lee Granger, Peggy Hatton, Carolyn Taylor,

Ginny Castellani, Ivette Barrios and Marie Morales Johnson

Each gave short presentations of who they are

and the appeal of the Heathrow Women's Club.

The Board Members and Ellen Yeaser,

defined Board positions and the Mission of the HWC.

32 women were in attendance and, early on, Sandy's wine opener was broken.

Al Sciuto, from up the street, rushed in with another opener.

Of course, a grand time was had by all.
