FROM YOUR

PASTOR’S HEART

After the winds of the Derecho raked across our mountains, we were left in awe of both the power of God’s creation and our dependence on creature comforts—electricity, hot water, and flush toiliets. That few days after the storm was a return to an old way of living. It

reminded me of the obstacles that

Page 3: The - oldgreenbrierbaptistchurch.typepad.com  · Web viewAfter the winds of the Derecho raked across our mountains, we were left in awe of both the power of God’s creation and

our forefathers and foremothers faced and overcame on a daily basis. Thanks to everyone in our church and community for pulling together to help one another and to clean up after the storm. Even with the return of modern conveniences, we still have obstacles to overcome together. Each obstacle presents us with an opportunity to experience victory as we follow the Lord with perseverence and determination. The work team from Montgomery Community Church in Cincinnati, OH showed us the way to overcome obstacles as the built, scraped, painted, witnessed, and worshiped their way through our community in the wake of the storm. Please read the article later in this newsletter documenting the obstacles they overcame and the victories they won in the name of the Lord.At this time we face a financial obstacle. Our giving, which has been very good over the past two years, has taken a turn downward in recent months. Our Official Board and Finance Team call on us to face and overcome this obstacle with the Lord’s help. During the month of August we will seek to Build the Treasury in order to fund the ministries and meet the maintenance needs of our church. We need everyone’s help as together we work to overcome this financial obstacle. Do your part to overcome this obstacle and win the

victory to the glory of God.

Dollars and Sense

In Fearless, author Max Lucado likens trusting in money instead of God to trying to make a purchase with play money. Pretend bills form Monopoly or other board games might look real to children, but even kids soon learn those don’t do any good at the cash register.

Sure, money is essential to meet our basic needs, and conventional wisdom urges us to save for retirement. But that’s a far cry from seeking security in accumulating things we don’t really need and spending more energy growing our financial accounts than our relationship with God.

Paul’s words to Timothy still ring true in our modern-day economy: “As for those who in the present age are rich, command them not . . . to set their

hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but rather on God who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment” (1 Timothy 6:17, NRSV).

Twenty-nine youth and adults from Montgomery Community Church, an ABC-USA Baptist church in Cincinnati, OH, did work on several projects in the Alderson area. Over $2,000 was spent on materials. Below is a summary of what was accomplished to the glory of God.

Brenda Boykin Project – The team constructed a 40 foot treated wooden ramp from the driveway to the back porch of the house.

Libby Bengey-Goins Project – The team scraped, re-glazed, and painted all basement windows; scraped and painted a porch banister and basement door; removed, primed, painted, and reinstalled vinyl shutters; built a new access door to the basement; and disassembled and removed an old tanning bed from the house.

Community Center Project – The team removed contents of two Alderson Ministerial Association storage rooms, cleaned and painted the rooms, threw out trash, and re-organized tools and materials in the storage space.

Joyce Housby Project –The team scraped and painted a metal porch rail, cleaned the gutters, replaced rotten boards in soffit and eaves, painted the eaves, and removed a broken section of sidewalk.

Johnson Memorial VBS – The team came prepared to support VBS at Old Greenbrier. However, since our VBS was delayed due to the storm, the team pitched in to provide needed volunteers for VBS at Johnson Memorial UMC. They also participated on Wednesday evening in joint worship and fellowship with youth from River of Life Church of God and youth volunteers from Bethlehem Farms.

Random Acts of Kindness – On their last day in Alderson, the team drove around town following the Lord’s leading in doing random acts of kindness. Among their activities, they cut up fallen trees, cleaned up debris, and volunteered at our Thrift Store.

Why Do People Give to the Church?1

Research findings from a University of Notre Dame study on the motivations for religious giving identified four reasons people offer for making financial contributions to their church.2

They were taught to give. Many churchgoers say that they follow the example set by their parents or other important adults. Essentially, their habit of generous giving stems from the trianing they received as they were growing up. They internalized that concept and continue a giving practice as adults.

Their beliefs and values foster giving. Worshipers often attach significant theological meaning to their financial contributions. The belief that everything belongs to God—including one’s material possessions—prompts some members to return a portion to the church. Others say that they give out of a sense of gratitude for God’s love and goodness. Church members who express a sense of religious duty to give believe that God requires giving or that it is what the Bible teaches.

They respond to needs. Contributors often say that they want to contribute to God’s work in the world. Worshipers who know about needs locally or globally report that they contribute to support those causes.

They give out of guilt. People can also give because they want to avoid the negative emotional consequences of not giving. For some, guilt is a motivator for giving. These givers say that if they do not give, they will be doing something wrong or letting someone down.

Why do you give? Do you give for the right reasons? How do you need to change your thinking and actions in regard to giving?

Our Finance Team meets on a regular basis to monitor our church budget and spending. Thank you for your regular tithes and special offerings. Here is our most recent financial report:

Balance May 31, 2012 - $ 808.10

June Receipts

+ 12,760.32

June Expenses

- 14,930.26

Balance

June 30, 2012 - 2,978.04

Starting Sunday, August 5 we will launch efforts to Build The Treasury. We are thankful for all those who give their tithe faithfully. However, we need everyone’s financial support to continue our church ministries and to care for our facilities. While not everyone can give an equal amount, all can make an equal sacrifice.

“Bring ye all the tithes into the storehouse, that there may be meat in mine house. . .” (Malachi 3:10a).

Thank you for giving to our Building Fund and missions offerings—over and above your regular tithe. We need everyone’s tithe to go to the General Fund so that we can faithfully continue to care for our church facility and reach out to the world with the good news of Jesus Christ.
