I am excited to preach on the challenging questions you came up with and sent to me over the past few weeks. This year I chose topics from people who together represent virtually all age groups in the church. I will begin the series by focusing on the question of God as our Mother, and what the biblical witness has to say. I call the final sermon “Creeds or Deeds?” This message relates to exploring what is essential for maintaining the Christian identity while our beliefs mature and change over a lifetime. For example, is being a Christian about what we do? Or is it about saying the right words or making a correct profession of faith? What do you think? In between those two sermons I will consider why Jesus once cursed a barren fig tree, a story told with slight variation in the gospels of Matthew and Mark. I’ll also preach on the flood narrative. This story is an old one, from Genesis 6 -9, and has strong similarities with an ancient tale that predates the Bible. Many Children’s Bibles have long included it, as well, which may be why a child asked me the question: “Why Did God Flood the Earth?” I look forward to seeing you on Sundays during July, for “You Asked For It!” Here is the schedule: July 8 – Is it Biblical to Consider God our Mother? July 15 – Why Did God Flood the Earth? July 22 Why Did Jesus Curse the Fig Tree? July 29 Creeds or Deeds?: Which are Essential for the Life of Faith? Blessings, Matt From the Pastor’s Desk

The Outlook Central Presbyterian Church 402 N College Street Waxahachie, TX 75165 July 2018

The “You Asked For It!” summer sermon series returns this year for four Sundays during July.

This story is an old one, from Genesis 6-9, and has strong similarities with an ancient tale that predates the Bible. Many Children’s Bibles have long included it, as well, which may be why a child asked me the question: “Why Did God Flood the Earth?”

I look forward to seeing you on Sundays during July, for “You Asked For It!” Here is the schedule:

July 8 – Is it Biblical to Consider God our Mother?

July 15 – Why Did God Flood the Earth?

July 22 – Why Did Jesus Curse the Fig Tree?

July 29 – Creeds or Deeds?: Which are Essential for the Life of Faith?

Blessings,

Matt

FINANCIAL UPDATE

A Message from the Finance and Stewardship Team

Dear Church Family,

Did you know that you can have your church contributions sent directly to the church from your bank or financial institution? You can do this by using bank draft, EFT or Bill Pay methods. Regular direct deposits to the church help you to be a faithful giver and help the

church with cash flow during slow giving times.

Also, if you are eligible for or receiving a required distribution from your IRA or 401K, you can direct an amount to the church without having to pay income tax. If you wish to donate or make pledge payments using the IRA tax-free arrangements, please contact the church office for the bank routing and account number for Central Presbyterian Church and arrange the direct

withdrawal with your financial institution.

To learn more, please contact the church office.

Gift Cards

The church office is in need of gift cards for people that

stop by the office for assistance.

MISSION TRIP TO HAITI Submitted by Cheryl Loper

A mission trip to NO PLACE LIKE HOME in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, is scheduled for July 9-16. The purpose of this trip will be to paint the rooms of the new orphanage, work on ceiling treatment, hang light fixtures and other electrical needs, possibly install doors and windows, possibly install surveillance system, and conduct VBS for 2 to 3 church groups. This trip is an effort needing the support of the entire congregation. There will be those who feel called to go physically to do some of this work, but equally important are those who will pray for this effort on a daily basis. Also some may feel called to provide funds or airline miles for personal expenses and to purchase needed materials and supplies. There are currently six people from our congregation signed up to go and more that are still praying about the opportunity. If you feel the need to give, or called to participate by going on this mission trip, even if there is not a clear path to accomplishing that, you are encouraged to sign up. It is amazing how God provides a way for those who are obedient to His call. A huge thank you goes to a sweet angel in our congregation who donated $2,500 to the mission trip fund. God will surely be glorified through the efforts that will be possible because of this generous gift. Fundraisers and other opportunities for congregational and community support will be planned for the spring. Any funds donated to the church should be marked “NPLH Haiti.” Those interested in going should contact the Lopers ASAP.

Do you ever participate in worship from the pew and think, “I could do that,” but take

the thought no further? This is your chance.

Be A Liturgist! We have a new year of worship opportunities with new

leaders. Please contact Priscilla Clore at (903) 641-5544 (call or text) or

Fall Community Garden update:

At the June meeting of the Earth Care Congregation ministry team, we learned that after we paid their fee, the City located the existing water line and sewer line and determined where to put the water meter. They also agreed to waive some of the fees to install the meter! Building & Grounds ministry team generously offered money from their budget to pay those fees so that we can complete this water installation. That means, the fall garden can proceed! Praise God!

So, here's what is needed:

1. July & August - weed and clear brush from the site. All are welcome to start this whenever you are available to work. You can use the shed for tool storage.

2. Donations are needed for soil, compost & materials for the raised beds along with plants. Whatever amount you can donate will be welcome.

We will announce a date for fall planting (late August) so that we can all enjoy this abundance of teamwork, generosity and grace together!

We all have our favorite picnic foods--potato or pasta salad, deviled eggs, fried chicken, sheet cake—you name it! While you have your recipes out this week, please take a minute to send a copy of those

Give your handwritten copies to Lynn Stockman or any of the Marthas, or go to the church website: Cookbook Project; User Name: [email protected]; Password: presby.

MARTHAS

Submitted by: Priscilla Clore

The Martha’s did NOT meet in June. We will resume on the Second Saturday in July (14th). All members are requested to bring two recipes for our church cookbook—one of their own plus one from family or friend. We may make soup, but that depends on our inventory. Remember to check the upright freezer in the Undercroft, and take some or cookies or bread when you visit someone. Stay cool!

Amazon boxes, Hello Fresh boxes, Walmart.com boxes and all the packing! Soda boxes, mail, paper towel and toilet paper rolls!

Now a convenient place to recycle paper and cardboard. The newest addition to the CPC recycle effort is next to the big blue clothing recycle bin across the street from the church office. Here's a list of what can be deposited for recycling:
