XIII th European Bat Research Symposium, 1-5 September 2014, Šibenik, Croatia THE OVERVIEW OF BAT FAUNA (CHIROPTERA) OF BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA WITH FIRST RECORD OF PIPISTRELLUS NATHUSII Branko KARAPANDŽA 1 , Jasminko MULAOMEROVIĆ 2 , Milan PAUNOVIĆ 3 , Jasmin PAŠIĆ 4 , Primož PRESETNIK 5 , Maja ZAGMAJSTER 6 1 Wildlife Conservation Society “Mustela”, Njegoševa 51, Belgrade, Serbia; [email protected] 2 Centre for Karst and Speleology, Branilaca sarajeva 30, Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina; [email protected] 3 Natural History Museum, Njegoševa 51, Belgrade, Serbia; [email protected] 4 Ekološko istraživačko društvo (EID), Banjaluka, Bosnia and Herzegovina; [email protected] 5 Centre for Cartography of Fauna and Flora, Ljubljana office, Klunova 3, Ljubljana, Slovenia; primoz.presetnik@ckff.si 6 SubBioLab, Department of Biology, Biotechnical Faculty, University of Ljubljana, Večna pot 111, Ljubljana, Slovenia; [email protected] Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) is one of the least studied countries considering bats in Europe. Little has been published so far and data are mostly scattered, sometimes in obscure publications. During preparation of this review, all available published data have been gathered and analyzed (39* relevant publications found), data from museum collections (7 natural history museums, 5 local museums and other institutions) have been collected and all accessible voucher specimens have been re-examined; new original data on bats (more than 400 records) have also been collected in the last 13 years. The oldest published record of a bat from BiH is an intriguing finding of Pteropus sp. in 1886 (Rajzer 1889). The specimen is still preserved in the Collection of Land Museum in Sarajevo, but without the skull. It has been examined by authors, but its condition did not allow for definitive species identification. The first scientific data on bats were given by Bolkay (1924, 1926), as lists of specimens stored in Land Museum Sarajevo. From second half of 20 th century there are just sporadic data from few regional researchers (9 persons and 8 publications with original data), who collected data mostly along other mammal research, as well as the first bat species check list (Đulić & Mirić 1967). In 21 st century, specific and more systematic surveys on bats started (including methods of roost checks, mist netting and use of ultrasound detectors) resulting in considerable increase in knowledge on bats and their distribution (including first records of 4 species, see Table). It was first started by bat researchers from Serbia, Slovenia and Poland, followed by increasing involvement of local bat researchers. The work of the latter in the last years resulted in considerable data increase and findings of new species for the country (see Table), published in as many as 16 publications, with first popular publication on bats (Pašić & Mulaomerović 2013), new check lists (Mulaomerović 2007-2008, 2013a) and national reports for EUROBATS (Mulaomerović 2004, 2005, 2006, 2009). Presence of 29 bat species can be confirmed in BiH so far (see Table). Pipistrellus nathusii is reported here for the first time. Three species mentioned in the literature cannot be considered as part of the recent BiH bat fauna: historical finding of Pteropus sp.(Rajzer 1889) was exceptional, Nyctalus lasiopterus was listed for the country (Đulić & Mirić 1967) without concrete record and Eptesicus nilssonii was registered in fossil remnants only(Malez 1973). All together, bats are know from 126** different sites, mostly caves (see Map), while large areas of the country still remain totally unexplored. Although bat fauna of BiH is heavily understudied, some underground roosts can already be recognized as being of high conservation importance for bats, harboring large numbers of individuals and species. Present list of bats of BIH should be regarded as provisional, as additional species are expected in the country having very diverse landscape and climate as well as relatively well preserved natural ecosystems. Based on their ecology and distribution range, at least 4 more bat species can be expected: Myotis dasycneme, Myotis alcathoe, Nyctalus lasiopterus and Eptesicus nilssonii. * Figure differs from those in abstract since the inclusion of new data ** Some of the sites are not visible on the Map as they overlap at this scale Kotrošan D., V. Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) is one of the least studied countries considering bats in Europe. Little has been published so far and data are mostly scattered, sometimes in obscure publications. During preparation of this review, all available published data have been gathered and analyzed (39* relevant publications found), data from museum collections (7 natural history museums, 5 local museums and other institutions) have been collected and all accessible voucher specimens have been re-examined; new original data on bats (more than 400 records) have also been collected in the last 13 years.* Figure differs from those in abstract since the inclusion of new data

All together, bats are know from 126* different sites, mostly caves (see Map), while large areas of the country still remain totally unexplored.

Although bat fauna of BiH is heavily understudied, some underground roosts can already be recognized as being of high conservation importance for bats, harboring large numbers of individuals and species.* some of the sites are not visible on the Map as they overlap at this scale

The first scientific data on bats were given by Bolkay (1924, 1926), as lists of specimens stored in Land Museum Sarajevo. From second half of 20th century there are just sporadic data from few regional researchers (9 persons and 8 publications with original data), who collected data mostly along other mammal research, as well as the first bat species check list (Đulić & Mirić 1967).

IIn 21st century, specific and more systematic surveys on bats started (including methods of roost checks, mist netting and use of ultrasound detectors) resulting in considerable increase in knowledge on bats and their distribution (including first records of 4 species, see Table).

Nyctalus leisleri, N. noctula, Pipistrellus pipistrellus, P. pygmaeus, P. kuhlii, P. nathusii, Hypsugo savii, Eptesicus serotinus, Vespertilio murinus, Plecotus auritus, P. macrobullaris, P. austriacus, P. kolombatovici, Barbastella barbastellus(photos by Branko Karapandža except for Plecotus kolombatovici by Jérôme Boisard <https://www.flickr.com/photos/jboisardphoto/4820385873/>)

Presence of 29 bat species has been confirmed in BiH so far (see Table).

Pipistrellus nathusii is reported here for the first time.

Three species mentioned in the literature cannot be considered as part of the recent BiH bat fauna: historical finding of Pteropus sp. (Rajzer 1889) was exceptional, Nyctalus lasiopterus was listed for the country (Đulić & Mirić 1967) without concrete record and Eptesicus nilssonii was registered in fossil remnants only (Malez 1973).
