Greetings and God’s blessings be yours on
the Thirty-first Sunday in Ordinary Time! Matching ones actions to our true intentions is
the consistent message in today’s readings.
What we do reveals who we really are, and if we
are people of faith, how we live should reflect
that reality. The first reading from Deuteronomy
tells the people that it is God alone to whom we
owe total allegiance. “Therefore, you shall love
the Lord your God, with all your heart, and
with all your soul and with all your strength.” Then in Hebrews we have talk about sacrifices
and high priests. Jesus appears as the high priest
before God on our behalf. “Therefore, he is
always able to save those who approach God
through him, since he lives forever to make
intercession for them.” And then in Mark’s
gospel, Jesus harkens back to the Old Testament
“first of all commandments” but adds an
important second one. “You shall love your
neighbor as yourself.”
If you want to worship the one God, then you
need to do so with your whole self. If you
reverently participate in the sacrifice of the
Mass, you should have the same reverence when
it comes to making sacrifices for others. If you
love God, then show that in your love of your
neighbor. Having integrity and sincerity will
put you “not far from the kingdom of God.”
Ask yourself this question: If you knew you
were going to die tonight, what would you do
today? Variations abound. If you found out you
had an incurable disease, which decisions would
you now make that you’ve been putting off? If
you had one last chance to say or do something
for the people you care about, what would it be?
If the world was going to end next week, what
would you fill your calendar with this week?
And if you had a chance to shape the future of
the world this week, for whom will you cast
your ballots? Yes, it’s another Election Day on
Tuesday, and as always, there’s a lot for
thoughtful people to consider. The main
question is this: What criteria do we Christians
use in discerning and shaping our future? How do faithful people choose?
The answer to all the above questions of
ultimate concern should be the same-Love! This answer is not some hippie, church going,
kind of vague response. Real love involves
time, investment and sacrifice. When a very
well educated man approached Jesus with a
question of ultimate concern, Jesus’ answer
without hesitation was: Love! And Jesus spelled
out in great detail through his ministry what he
meant by love. It’s all there in the scriptures.
Preselected voting cards are unnecessary for
those who attend to the gospel. The process for
a person of faith is to: pray, listen, love and
choose. It is the same procedure you are obliged
to follow for every hour of your life and in every
interaction. If you would shape the future as
God would have it, the only method is: Love! We are only two weeks from our Backwards
Money Drawing that will be held at the Fall
Fling Party on Saturday, November 17th. We
still have 250 of the 500 tickets to sell by that
date (Yikes!). It may seem a bit daunting, but
hopefully we can make it like last year. Thanks
to all who took tickets last Sunday. Please have
them back by next Sunday, November 11th.
Tickets are available at the rectory during
regular office hours. We need everyone’s help
to make this important parish fundraising
event a success.
Please remember to take home a copy of the
bulletin when you leave Mass today. It contains
many items of interest and invitation, with
something for everyone. Of special note is the
order form for the Backwards Money Tickets
(HELP!), the ad for the Fall Fling tickets, the
latest 2012 Catholic Ministries Appeal update,
news and needs from Parish Social Ministry
and much more. To keep informed, keep a copy
of the bulletin at home for quick and easy
reference.
Have a great first week of November! Stay
well, be patient, act kindly and we will all make
it through all the recovery efforts from this past
week’s hurricane. And let’s pray for our 9th
graders who will be making the sacrament of
Confirmation this coming Wednesday,
November 7th. God bless and protect everyone
especially during this difficult time.

Hurricane Sandy
As I write this, I am looking out my office window on
Tuesday morning. The sound of sirens is a constant one as
police cars, ambulances, emergency vehicles and fire trucks
make constant trips through East Rockaway and the
surrounding villages. Hurricane Sandy sure has packed a
wallop with tremendous flooding, power outages, and
property damage as her gift too all of us. Nature can sure be
a cruel companion at times. I hope that you and your loved
ones kept safe and have endured a minimum of difficulty
and inconvenience. Our local village officials, auxiliary
police, emergency services, volunteer fire fighters and
others gave tirelessly of themselves in the facing the
enormous challenges that Hurricane Sandy hurled at us.
They should all be commended and thanked for what they
did this week and now continue to do in the recovery efforts
of our village and surrounding areas. May God bless
them and all of us as, once again, we put our lives back
together. Be kind, be patient and be helpful to one
another. —Father Chuck

St. Raymond Human Life Committee
“I support Roe vs. Wade” and if elected, “I will protect a woman’s right to choose.” Sounds very American, very democratic. Only if we know what is being chosen, can we then determine if morally and ethically that “choice” can be given and then sanctioned through the last.
So what actually is the “choice” the politician is protecting? He or she wants to protect the legal “right” of a woman to choose to have the child in her womb—her own child—killed through barbarous and painful surgical procedure known as abortion. The politician, by supporting the Supreme Court Decision, goes so far as to want to protect this killing up to and including the ninth month of pregnancy for any reason. What kind of a society are we when we accept the killing of an innocent human being tin the name of “freedom of choice”? Remember just a short time ago in our American history, we were also given “freedom of choice”. And what was that “choice”? The “freedom to choose” to own and sell slaves. The Supreme Court decided in its Dred Scott Decision that “a slave is the property of the owner and can be bought, sold, used or even killed by the owner at the owner’s discretion. And although he may have a heart and a brain and he may be a human life biologically, a slave is not a human person”. In the Roe vs. Wade and its companion Decision, Doe vs. Bolton, the Court declared that an unborn baby is the property of the mother and she can have the baby killed by abortion. This can be done any time until birth and although he (the baby) has a heart and a brain and he is a unique human individual biologically, an unborn baby is not a legal person. And to think that some who want to be President of our country proudly state that they are for this so-called “right” for women and tragically many citizens, Catholics included, will actually vote for one of these candidates. This Tuesday, November 6th is Election Day for all registered voters. As Catholic voters, we have a privilege responsibility and an opportunity to participate in building a “Culture of Life”. Every voice matters in the public forum. When voting this Tuesday, please bring your Catholic faith into the voting booth and exercise the power of your vote to defend all human life, especially those who have no voice—the live babies in the womb.

BACKWARDS MONEY DRAWING
Back by popular demand, a special fundraiser for St. Raymond Parish and School, the "Backwards Money Drawing!" This special fundraiser will be held on Saturday, November 17, 2012 at the parish’s "Fall Fling" party. Tickets for the Backwards Drawing are $100.00 each with only 500 tickets available. The grand prize of $10,000.00 will be awarded to the last ticket drawn at the "Fall Fling" party. There will also be an additional $10,000.00 in prize money spread amongst other tickets as they are drawn. For us to be successful, we need to sell all 500 tickets! While $100.00 may be high, the price can easily be shared with family, friends or co-workers. The key is to be in it for a chance at the grand prize of $10,000.00. Winners need not be present at the drawing. Tickets are available at the rectory during regular office hours and you may also use the tear-off below to order a ticket. Separate tickets for the "Fall Fling" party will go on sale in October.

"One Faith, One Hope, Many Gifts"
A new month, November, is here, and our 2012 Catholic Ministries Appeal totals seem to be at
a stand-still. Now, while we are more than two-thirds to our goal which is good news, there is still
quite a distance to go for reaching our goal or even last year’s total. This positive response comes
in the midst of a greater challenge this year. While we did not meet our goal for the 2011 Appeal, we
have been given a bigger challenge for 2012. Our parish goal has been raised from $95,960.00 to
$98,400.00. We raised $86,516.00 from 400 donors in 2011. Therefore our rebate was $9,748.00
which is a nice return in funds for St. Raymond’s. Once again in 2012, the rebate formula remains the
same. If we reach our new goal of $98,400.00 in payment we will receive 20% back and then 80% of
every dollar paid in over the goal. Basically, the better we do for the diocese, the better we do for St.
Raymond’s. However, since our goal has gone up and we have had a steady falloff in the total pledge
amount and number of donors for the past three years, our potential rebate will probably also
decrease. So what can we do? More donors and a higher pledge amount would put us on the road to
success.
As a priest, a pastor and a Catholic member of the Diocese of Rockville Centre, I really do believe
in the importance of the Catholic Ministries Appeal. This appeal supports more than 40 pastoral
programs and ministries that serve 133 parishes across Long Island. The funds raised help us in
fulfilling our mission to live and share our faith, care for God’s people and build God’s kingdom
throughout Long Island. All the money raised is used to support four main areas of
ministry:Catholic Charities, Education, Formation and Pastoral Ministry. During this Stewardship time of renewal and gratitude, perhaps we will also see a nice jump
further towards our goal. Prayer is always needed as well as a willingness to share our gifts with
those in need throughout Long Island. Remember, by making a pledge or donation to the Catholic
Ministries Appeal, you will be supporting programs that help to feed seniors and families in need
right here in our own communities and you will be playing a big part in helping all the other good
works of the Catholic Church on Long Island. And don’t forget the significant rebate St. Raymond’s
Parish may also receive by your generosity. Pledge brochures and envelopes are always available for
those wishing to make a pledge or donation on the pew shelves at the rear of the church. Otherwise,
look for the mailings sent by the appeal office. A new one will be coming in October. You can
always respond directly to the appeal office and St. Raymond’s will get full credit. We have a parish
of 3200 family and individual registrations. We really need to increase the amount of donors from the
400 of last year in order to be successful and qualify for the maximum rebate.
Please take time to prayerfully consider making a pledge or one time gift. Then if you are able to
help either respond by direct mail to the appeal office or back to the rectory using one of the appeal
envelopes found on the pew shelves by the doors of the church. Together, let’s make 2012 a bounce
back year for the Catholic Ministries Appeal here at St. Raymond Parish. Below is the current appeal
update.

PRAYER for RELIGIOUS FREEDOM
Almighty God, Father of all nations, for freedom you have set us free in Christ Jesus (Gal. 5:1). We praise
and bless you for the gift of religious liberty, the foundation of human rights, justice, and the common
good. Grant to our leaders the wisdom to protect and promote our liberties; by your grace may we have the
courage to defend them, for ourselves and for all those who live in this blessed land. We ask this through the
intercession of Mary Immaculate, our patroness, and in the name of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, with whom you live and reign,
one God, forever and ever, Amen.
