Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time ~ July 19, 2020
Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time | July 19, 2020 | Page 2
I had my first weekend experience for both parishes and I must say that I had a good start but I think I need to acclimate myself more
with the new routine because I was used to having one parish only but now I have two parishes to administer. I need to remind myself of the daily and weekend Masses that on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, I have to celebrate Mass at St. Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, Kittanning with two different schedules of time, 8 am on Monday and Friday and 7 pm on Wednesday. While on Tuesday and Thursday, I need to be at St. Mary, Mother of God Parish in Yatesboro for the 8:30 am Mass. And for the weekend, I need to remember that each parish has one schedule of Mass for Saturday, 4 pm in Kittanning and 6 pm in Yatesboro. Then for Sunday, 9 am in Kittanning and 11 am in Yatesboro.
This set up is new to me. Therefore, I need to get used to it. However, I will give my time and my presence equally to attend to the needs of both parishes. As I said in my homily this past weekend, I will try to be available for your sacramental and spiritual needs. You can call me, stop by the office or email me at [email protected].
This week I will be meeting with the parish staff to get to know them and their role in the parish. Joseph Kacprowski, our facilities manager and Sandy Ashley, our Director of Liturgy and Music from St. Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish went to attend a seminar workshop and training called “ServSafe” at Christ Our Shepherd Center in Greensburg on July 14, 2020. This is in line with the Manager Food Safety Certification, which the Diocese of Greensburg requires for any parishes in the diocese who will be holding a food fundraiser or any parish events. Since our partner parishes do food fundraising and parish events, this will be beneficial for us especially as we continue to deal with the COVID-19.
Another event we had was the Chrism Mass. Normally it is being celebrated on Holy Thursday with the whole clergy of the Diocese of Greensburg and laity but because of the COVID-19, it was postponed. It was rescheduled for July 13, 2020 at 2 pm at the Blessed Sacrament Cathedral in Greensburg with limited participants. Only members of the Presbyteral Council attended and a representative from each of our parishes in the Diocese. Thanks to Lina Milligan, member of the Parish Pastoral Council from St. Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish, Kittaning and Bob Skamai, member of St. Mary, Mother of God Parish, Yatesboro for representing our partner parishes.

Grace and sin are found together. As much as
our hearts long for union with God, there is
always that part of us that resists. As much as
I wholeheartedly believe in God, there is
a dimension of disbelief with which I also
wrestle. Even though we may seek purity
and integrity in all of our thoughts, words,
and deeds, there is also the path toward
weakness and sin that we find ourselves
traversing. Just as weeds can easily overtake
the best of gardens, so too can weakness and
sin overtake and overwhelm a person. The
call is to realize the power the weeds of sin
have to choke us off from God’s presence.
While God allows the wheat and the weeds to
exist together, we must keep our eyes fixed
on God’s mercy and forgiveness and resist
the death that comes from giving way to sin
and evil. In God’s time, the eternal harvest
will come, and we will no longer have to worry
about the weeds. For now, we must be
vigilant and regularly seek the assistance of
the Master Gardener.
Please remember in your prayers the soul of Dora Wolfe, mother of Kittanning parishioner Cheryl Battaglia, who passed away last week. May God grant her eternal rest and peace.

Virtual Counseling
Social distancing can take a toll. So can
waiting in line to get into a grocery or
hardware store. It’s not unusual to feel
angry, or frustrated, or confused. For some people, the
pandemic restrictions can magnify feelings of anxiety,
depression, interpersonal conflict, grief and a wide variety of
other issues. Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Greensburg
provides virtual counseling to help address those issues and
more. Taking care of your own emotional well-being is very
important to you and the people you love. You don’t need to
face these feelings alone. Call Catholic Charities at 724-837-

The St. Pope John Paul II Tuition Opportunity Partnership
A groundbreaking scholarship opportunity has been established for students who wish to attend
a Catholic School in the Diocese of Greensburg
To become a TOP Student, please call 724-552-2565 or
visit www.catholicschoolsguide.org
A groundbreaking scholarship opportunity has been established for students who wish to attend a Catholic school in the Diocese of Greensburg called the Saint Pope John Paul II Tuition Opportunity Partnership. The TOP student initiative was founded by anonymous donors from the local business community who received Catholic educations and were profoundly influenced by Saint Pope John Paul II. The donors believe that their Catholic faith, education and moral foundation gave them a great advantage in life. The Diocese of Greensburg is thrilled to announce they have committed $2.4 million in tuition assistance this year. That is the single largest donation by a family that the Diocese of Greensburg has ever received in one year. Their committment combined with $1.7 million in existing funds donated by more than 100 other individuals and businesses partici-pating in Pennsylvania’s Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program now make $4.1 million in scholarships and tuition assistance available for the 12 Catholic schools in the Diocese of Greensburg. “This is a major opportunity for our Catholic schools that is being made possible by visionary, community-minded individuals who understand how the impact of a private, Catholic education could benefit thousands of students,” Greensburg Bishop Edward C. Malesic said. “We are grateful for their commitment to our schools and families through this partnership.” The Diocese of Greensburg is hopeful that the Saint Pope John Paul II Tuition Opportunity Partnership will become a model for making Catholic education accessible to families who value strong Catholic teaching and formation as a neces-sary part of their child’s development. America magazine wrote that Saint Pope John Paul II left a legacy of being one of the most important world leaders in the second half of the 20th century. He was a man of convic-tion and principle who built bridges of peace between people of different countries and religions. He was a preacher and a teacher who drew historic crowds of men, women and chil-dren all yearning to be closer to God. He was front and center on the global stage as a defender of human dignity writing that, “Every threat to human dignity and life must necessarily be felt in the Church’s very heart.” He believed that Catholic schools should be supported because they are critical to the formation and inspiration of young people. “Our Catholic schools have many advantages that others are not able to provide. Our schools create a caring environ-
ment where children can talk openly about faith in a high-tech academic atmosphere. Our personalized attention gives them other advantages as well. The student to teacher ratio is 13-to-1. And the high school graduation rate is 100%,” Dr. Maureen Marsteller, superintendent of Catholic schools, said. Families interested in participating in the Saint Pope John Paul II Tuition Opportunity Partnership will be matched with an outreach and admissions coordinator who will accompany them through the application process. The parent or guardian of an interested student should call 724-552-2565 or visit www.catholicschoolsguide.org to arrange an in-person interview with the designated
outreach and admissions coordinator to begin the process of applying for the Saint Pope John Paul II Tuition Opportunity Partnership. The family must then demon-strate a financial need and express a willingness to provide some financial contribution to the cost of the educa-tion and agree to support the child’s spiritual and academic progress. This will include the completion of the
FACTS Grant and Aid application so that alternative sources of funding, such as EITC assistance, may be used for tuition assistance as well. However, the parent/guardian does not have to qualify for low income assistance to be eligible for participation in the partnership. The student must demonstrate evidence of academic com-mitment and an enthusiasm for learning as well as a willing-ness to participate in at least one activity at the student’s local parish or faith community. The family, along with the student, must demonstrate their commitment to the school as well as to their parish or denominational church through the donation of time, talent or treasure as able. They should earn recognition as valued servant leaders. The family must be registered members, or be willing to become members, of a parish or other local faith community. Bishop Malesic said, “All the clergy of the Diocese of Greensburg are committed to caring for the spiritual needs of every student in the Saint Pope John Paul II Tuition Opportunity Partnership so that each can deepen their faith, develop a personal relationship with Christ, enhance their self-esteem, and enjoy hope, joy and love of life.” To become a partner of TOP students and help provide additional scholarship funds, contact Michael Lucotch, Director of Development, at 724-552-2503 or [email protected].
