OFFER

Dear Parents and Guardians of Freshmen students at VAHS,

On September 27th, all VAHS 9th graders will be attending a panel discussion featuring some of our local and state elected officials. The panel will consist of State Senator John Erpenbach, State Representative Sondy Pope, County Supervisor Mike Willett, City Council Member Brad Steiner, City Council Member Sarah Gaskell, City Council Member Liz Doyle and School Board President Noah Roberts.

As part of our 9th grade U.S. History curriculum, students learn about civic duty and the different responsibilities that various levels of government have in our lives. By having the chance to hear from ask questions of some of these very important elected officials, we believe this is an outstanding opportunity for our students.

If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to ask any of us.

Sincerely,

VAHS U.S. History Teachers

Verona Area High School’s annual food drive is rapidly approaching, and we have several key pieces of information to articulate in order to ensure a smooth and successful start to collections this year... About: Food Drive is a student-run organization that collaborates with the Badger Prairie Needs Network to provide food to hundreds of families in the Verona area. This is a district-wide drive that encourages all students who are passionate in helping their community get involved How can I get involved?: Bring in food to your second-hour teacher! This is the best way to contribute to the drive and to the community. Lists will be posted weekly, presented during announcements and sent out to your student email for your convenience. Students interested in further participating in food drive are welcome to come to our weekly A+ meetings, every Thursday, beginning the week of October 9th. There, volunteer opportunities and collection updates will be given. Goal: We are committed to collecting 20,000 pounds of food by the end of the drive Collections: High school collections have been moved back to 2nd hour from advisory to increase participation Kick Off: The school-wide kickoff will take place on Monday, October 9th in the PAC during advisory. Volunteers: There are several volunteer opportunities available for interested students. These hours will count for NHS and silver cord requirements. More information can be received during our A+ meetings We are optimistic that we will have a very successful and fulfilling drive this fall! Any additional questions can be directed to Megan Wenn or Lexie Conlin.

Important Yearbook Information for The Class of 2018

To all Verona Area High School 2017-2018 Seniors and their Parents/Guardians:

This is to inform you that senior portraits will be in color in our yearbook. Because of the deadline for color pages in the yearbook, it is important that we receive your portraits by Friday, September 8, 2017.

We are asking all seniors to submit one vertical wallet size color photo (like the sample shown on the right), through the Jostens direct upload link, email address below, or CD, by Friday, September 8, 2017. If you are submitting the photo electronically (upload or email) please make certain the photo resolution quality is at least 300 DPI or higher.

Please note, we will not be returning this photo to you. If you submit your photo electronically, please name the photo last name, first name. If you submit your photo in hard copy format, please neatly write last name, first name on the photo. This is very important for organizational purposes.

Members of the senior class feel that it is very important to include all seniors. Although studio pictures are the most common, we encourage you to summit a photo even it was taken by a family friend or another student.

We use these photos in the Verona Press, on the “Big Screen” at graduation at EPIC, and possibly in the senior video, therefore all photos must be waist up for consistency. In addition, all photos must be school appropriate. All photos are subject to approval by the VAHS administration. If you do not submit a photo, we will use the school Lifetouch photo that is taken at school. You will not have to submit your Lifetouch photo, we will have access to it. If you choose not to submit a photo, and you do not get your Lifetouch photo taken, you will not be pictured in any of these events/occasions.

Many photographers offer to send your photo directly to Verona Area High School. However, we recommend that you check with your photographer to make certain they plan to send it by Friday, September 8, 2017. Also keep in mind that studios fill up quickly in the summer, so make your appointment early. A final reminder. Photos need to be vertical, not horizontal (like sample shown).

If you have any questions about this, please call Amy Moschkau at 845-4442.

How do you (or your Studio) submit your photos?1. Upload your photo directly to the Jostens link:

http://www.images.jostens.com VAHS User Id: 408483591

2. Email photos to: [email protected]

3. Either bring in a digital or paper copy to the High School Main Office. Digital are preferred!

Please note, the Jostens link will not be available until July 1, 2017 and the VAHS Yearbook email will be checked in late August/early September. We will not be able to email you individually to let you know we received your photo until mid-August. Also note, this email will be checked by student members of the yearbook class so please do not share personal information or questions.

ONLINE ATHLETIC REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN!  How to Register Online for VAHS Athletics: There are a couple of ways to get to our Athletic website, you can: Go to http://vahsathletics.com/ OR go the the Verona Area School District Website/High School/Athletics/Online Athletic Registration When you get to our website:

● On the right side above "Latest Photo Galleries" is the link that says "Register For Sports". Just follow the links!

● If you need the website in Spanish? Just click on the TRANSLATE WEBSITE button. ● If you registered last year for a sport you use your same login info.

If new you will need to create an account. Make sure you sign up for the CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR ATHLETIC CHOICES (not last years) - you may need to scroll down to the correct year.

● EACH YEAR you will need to read and electronically sign both the Code of Conduct and Concussion information and download the emergency information sheet to fill in and give to your coach NOT the Athletic Office.

● Physical/Alternate year forms are available - even if you do not need to download a form you will need to click on the link before you can proceed.

● Feel free to click on all sports your child will participate in this year so that you will not need to go back in and do so later.

Commonly asked ?’s ??: Where do the physical/alternate year cards go? - to your coach or directly to Ms. Witte-Davis’ office across from the vending machines at the entrance to the HS commons. ??: Where does my emergency info sheet go? - to your coach ??: Do I pay my athletic fees on vahsathletics.com - NO, they are paid using your efunds account or by check made out to VAHS, please do not include other fees on this check. ??: Are the athletic fees the same as the Booster Club fees - NO, they are two separate things. ??: Does my child need a physical or an alternate year form this year?

Here are the guidelines per WIAA rules: Physical: If physical card is signed by a doctor showing it took place April 1, 2016 or after AND is on file in our office you will not need a physical for the 2017-18 school year, only an Alternate Year card is needed. Alternate Year: If alternate year card was signed May 1, 2017 or after it is good for the 2017-18 school year.

NO.

NO.

¡Buena suerte Wildcats!

From the Administration

Following a review of safety procedures with the administration team, Verona Area High School can confirm that patrons and students will not be permitted to take large bags, backpacks, and draw string bags into the football stadium during home games.

Smaller bags, like purses, will be permitted but may be subject to searches and patrons are urged not to bring bags at all whenever possible.

We would like to thank our patrons in advance for their cooperation with this matter as we look forward to a fantastic season of football over the coming months.

Go Wildcats!!!

Magic To Do!

VAHS Theater

Pippin is coming to Verona Area High School on October 12-15, 2017, in the VAHS Performing Arts Center.

The performances on October 12-14 will take place at 7:30pm with a matinee at 2pm on Sunday, October 15.

Pippin, written by Stephen Schwartz, premiered on Broadway in 1972, has won several Tony awards, and has

been performed around the world. Schwartz also composed the popular musicals Godspell (1971) and Wicked

(2003).

This musical is performed by a mysterious Band of Players, led by the Leading Player, to act out the story of

Pippin, a young prince on his search for purpose. Pippin and his father King Charlemagne are characters based

on historical figures of the early Middle Ages, although the plot is hilariously skewed from their real lives. En-

joy Pippin’s misadventures as he navigates his journey towards meaning in this comedy filled with surprises

and life lessons.

VAHS students in the production include: Derek Argall as Pippin, Kate Veak as Leading Player, Asiah Doyle

as Charlemagne, Daphne Buan as Catharine, Maddie Vilker as Fastrada, Elyse Mancilla as Berthe, Caulden

Parkel as Lewis, and Zaria Roller as Thea. Many more dedicated students make up the Band of Players, the

crew, and pit orchestra who all work to bring the story to life.

The production is directed by Steve Nibbe, with Heather Thorpe as vocal director and Eric Anderson as orches-

tra director. Choreography is done by Verona Theater Alum Sara Bartlett. VAHS seniors Raina Voss and Mag-

gie Kempfer will be stage managers for this show.

Pippin is full of hilarious as well as meaningful moments with many twists and turns that you won’t want to

miss!

Medications at School 2017-2018

As we look forward to a new school year, here is some important information regarding students having medications at school.

All medication must be in its original container. Over the counter medication shall only be given with written permission from the parent/guardian. Prescription medication shall be given only with written orders from the student’s physician and written parental permission. A record will be maintained of all medications given at school. Parents/students are responsible for providing any medication that is to be taken at school.

Students in High School who demonstrate reasonable maturity and responsibility may self-administer over the counter medications under the established procedure.

Every student who takes medication on his own will need to have written permission from the parent/guardian on file in the health room.

Medication consent forms are available at each of the schools and on the district website.

Consent forms must be filled out completely. The name of the medication and dose MUST be written on the consent form. An order from your primary care provider must be provided if your child takes more than the recommended dose

of an over the counter medication. Medication sent to school in baggies will not be accepted. Consent forms are valid for one school year.

YOUTH OPTIONS PROGRAM AND DEADLINES FOR STUDENTS

The Youth Options Program allows high school juniors and seniors to enroll at an institution of higher education in Wisconsin. Under the program, certain approved courses may be taken, without cost, that lead to credit that can be applied toward high school graduation, as well as toward post-secondary programs. A student who intends to enroll in the University of Wisconsin at Madison, Edgewood College, or Madison College the spring semester of the school year 2017-2018 must adhere to the following timelines:

1. Make an appointment with your School to Career Coordinator, Amy Moschkau, to discuss your plans and choose courses that work with your graduation pathway.

2. By October 1, 2017: A. Notify your School to Career Coordinator at Verona Area High School of your

intention to attend a college or university named above for the spring semester of the school year 2017-2018 under this program. Use Form PI-8700A which can be secured from the School to Career Coordinator, or by going to the website https://dpi.wi.gov/dual-enrollment/youth-options/application

B. Please complete the form carefully and turn in to Mrs. Moschkau, School to Career Coordinator. Select a course(s) that is either different from any course, or is an extension (higher level) of a course the high school offers. Eighteen credits is the maximum credits allowed for each student taking Youth Options courses.

3. By October 15, 2017: You will be notified of the action taken by the Board of Education as to whether or not the course(s) you selected will be awarded high school credit and how much credit you will be awarded. You may register only for courses that have been approved by the Board of Education.

5. If the Board of Education denies either the desired courses or the number of high school credits awarded, the pupil may appeal the school board’s decision to the state superintendent of schools within 30 days after the receipt of the school board’s decision.
