“ …two amazing solo performers who somehow manage to melt into one entity, creating incredible harmonies that still raise the hairs on the back of my neck as I write ” Jennifer Ives, AD, Live from the Rock Music Festival

TheSmallGloriesareCaraLuft&JDEdwards,amusicaltour-de-forcepartnershipplantedonthe Canadian Prairies. These veteran singer-songwriters have a way of making time disappear, rooms shrink, and audiences feel as they are right there on the stage with the band — writ-ing the songs, living the songs, performing the songs. It’s not uncommon for listeners to find themselves laughing, dancing, crying, or caught up in a good ol’ fashioned sing-along. The material of a Small Glories concert is welcoming in terms of subject, folk-pop melody and instrumentation — songs of love, loss, and the environment, delivered with soaring, interwoven vocals on stomping clawhammer banjo, guitar and harmonica. Their newest CD,Assiniboine & The Red, has been nominated for four 2020 Canadian Folk Music Awards; ContemporaryAlbumoftheYear,EnglishSongwriteroftheYear,VocalGroupoftheYearandEnsembleoftheYear.

Orit Shimoni (Alberta) A Nickelodeon Debut!Orit Shimoni decided to live out of a suitcase so she could pursue touring and recording with her entire focus. She has been officially ‘on the road’ for nearly nine years, no fixed address. With her recent release of a ninth album, and the tenth on the way, Orit’s songs and performances draw diverse audiences into her profound and universal themes and her storytell-ing talent. Orit is a truly unique and prolific artist. In a sea of predictable writing and pretty voices, she stands out as a special force with important relatable messages, and a disarming sense of humour.

Harry Manx (British Columbia) January 25

“ Manx’s real skill lays in creating a rare musical place where blues, country, folk and Indian classical music co-exist as some spirit force. ” Frank Hadley, Downbeat Magazine

Come celebrate the Nick’s 40th birthday with Mississippi blues man Harry Manx, who creates musical short stories that wed the tradition of the blues with the depth of classical Indian ragas.HarrystudiedinIndiawithVishwaMohanBhatt,inventorofthe20-stringMohanVeena,whichhasbecomeHarry’ssignatureinstrument.HarryistherecipientofsevenMapleBluesawards,sixJunonominationsandaCanadianFolkMusicAwardforBestSoloArtist.Asuccessful touring performer, Manx has brought his breathtaking solo shows across Canada andintotheUSA,AustraliaandEurope.Hehasappearedatmanyprestigiousfestivals, worldclass theatres, concert halls and infamous blues clubs around the globe. Harry Knight (Alberta) A Nickelodeon Debut! At 12-years old, Harry Knight has performed around the world and is an accomplished flamenco guitarist. At 8 he took flamenco guitar classes in Spain for 5 weeks. Last year he performed with the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. Harry says: “At first I was going to do the drums, when I was 4½ years old, but I decided at the last minute to go with guitar. I like the tone, the culture of the Spanish music, how everyone enjoys it. It’s warm and really brightatthesametime.”Thisspring,HarrywillrecordhisfirstCDwithfor-mermembersofJesseCook’sband.

Matthew Byrne is a traditional singer, storyteller and guitar player with a repertoire shaped by his musical upbringing. With parents who were both singers and song collectors and a family focus on sharing songs, Byrne has inherited a unique repertoire as well as a fascina-tion with unearthing and reimagining traditional songs. His second album Hearts and Heroes, received a Canadian Folk Music Award nomination for Traditional Singer and won the award for Traditional Album of the Year. Matthew is currently supporting his newest release, Horizon Lines, a collection of material from both sides of the Atlantic that continues Byrne’s journey through his own musical lineage. This album was chosen Traditional Album of the Year at the 2018 Canadian Folk Music Awards. With powerful vocals, polished guitar work, and a presence that fills the room, Matthew views songs as ways of understanding the people before him, their lives, work, language and world view.

A generous demeanor, a delicate wit, and an empathetic understanding of audiences of all shapes, his performances are as true and honest as the songs themselves.

The Good Lovelies, Kerri Ough, Sue Passmore, and Caroline Brooks are immensely talented vocalists and songwriters in their own right; however, it’s their voices, interwoven in harmony, powerful and pure, organic and inspiring, that elevates The Good Lovelies from impressive to peerless. Over the course of their decade-plus career, they’ve covered plenty of stylistic ground, adding tinges of pop, roots, jazz, and even hip-hop to their country folk core at vari-ous points. The trio first united in 2006 for a one-off performance and has since compiled a catalogueoffourstudioalbums, apairofEPs,alivealbum, andChristmascollection.Throughit all, the unmistakable sound of their intertwined voices has been the sonic anchor, and that remains true as the Good Lovelies now look to push further into the mainstream with their most accessible and pop-influenced output to date.

Ian Foster (Newfoundland) A Nickelodeon Debut!Ian Foster continues to wear many musical hats: touring songwriter, music producer, film director, writer, and composer. Ian’s writing style belies a love of history, home and the humble tale. Often likened to Canadian song writing icon Bruce Cockburn in both writing and guitar style, Ian’s music has been described as thoughtful, introspective, cinematic, hopeful, atmos-pheric, and cathartic by critics and fans alike. All of these different facets come together on 2017’s Sleeper Years like never before. That music is the way he tells his stories only makes the telling richer still, it’s modern folk wrapped in Canadiana.
