Masterclass on French Romantic Music with Gerard Brooks St Chad’s Church, Campleshon Road, York
This was a superb event. Six members of the association had agreed to take part in playing a range of
French Romantic music. There was much excellent playing as well as my rubbish and it was interesting to
see how Gerard made suggestions to bring out more of the nuances from the music and show how we
could or should think about registering the pieces on instruments that were not French Romantic organs.
St Chad’s Church organ is interesting as it is very versatile for an instrument of its size and while not
perfectly in tune on the day (ideal for French as a result?!!) it has to be remembered that building work at
the church had just been finished and the organ removed from its plastic wrapper. It is also worth
remembering that St Chad’s do not have much money compared to some of the City Centre Churches
and can only afford two tunings a year.

NEXT EVENT
Visit to Selby Abbey, Saturday, May 20th
Would members please meet outside the main entrance to the Abbey at 11.30.
This is because there is a service before our meeting which may still be in progress when we arrive. As soon as the service ends members will have an opportunity to play the organ until 13.00. There will be a lunch break of one hour to allow members to buy a snack from the Abbey café or find food in Selby. At 14.00 Geoffrey Coffin will give an illustrated talk on the restoration of the organ in the St Nicholas Centre within the Abbey. It is not possible to have access to the main part of the Abbey in the afternoon due to a Wedding Photo Shoot!
I found two interesting pictures of the result of installing a Compton Organ in Selby Abbey. You can see what can go wrong when faults occur. So do you get the wiring in the organ of your church checked? Do you get the blower serviced once a year?
