Did That Scare You?Well, if that did scare you, then imagine if a totalitarian government, such as the one presented in George Orwell’s 1984, using this power. Under this government, one wouldn’t be able to think or even function for themselves.

RATS! They are the objects of Winston’s,

the main character’s, inner-most fears. This was revealed early on in

the book, but does not play a big role until the end. The

government, eventually, took advantage of his rat-phobia and

used some rats to break and completely crush Winston’s will-

power, causing him to lose all humane reason. These rats drove

him to become, “insane, a screaming animal.” (p 235)

her. tear her face off, strip her to the bones. Not me! Julia! Not me!" (p 236)

The cage was nearer; it was closing in. Winston heard a succession of shrill cries which appeared to be occurring in the air above his head. But he fought furiously against his panic. To think, to think, even with a split second left – to think was the only hope. Suddenly the foul musty odor of the brutes struck his nostrils. There was a violent convulsion of nausea inside him, and he almost lost consciousness. Everything had gone black. For an instant he was insane, a screaming animal.

Totalitarian Rule

Under the circumstances that the totalitarian

government put Winston in, they eradicated all

individual thoughts and, in turn, caused one’s

independence to fall apart.

It was terribly dangerous to let your thoughts wander when you were in any public place or within range of a telescreen. The

smallest thing could give you away. A nervous tic, an unconscious look of anxiety, a habit of muttering to yourself--anything that

carried with it the suggestion of abnormality, of having something to hide.

'Five! Five! Five!'

'No, Winston, that is no use. You are lying. You still think there are four. How many fingers, please?'

'Four! five! Four! Anything you like. Only stop it, stop the pain!'
