THEPLAN:THEFUTUREOFTHETHOMPSONSCHOOLUNHhasbeeneducatingstudents,developingnewknowledgeandtechnologies,andengaging

withproducersinthediversefieldsofagricultureforover150years.TheThompsonSchoolof

AppliedSciencehasbeenapartofthathistoryfor125years,byprovidingapplied2-yeardegrees

withinagricultural,andmorerecentlyinfood,forestry,companionanimal,andciviltechnology

sectorsinthestateofNewHampshireandbeyond.Themarkethaschanged:thereisincreased

competitioninavailabilityandpricefortwo-yearassociatesdegrees,fewerstudentsinthe

applicantpool,andasignificantincreasenationallyinthemarketforshort-termcredentials.Allof

thishasledtodecreasingenrollment.TheThompsonSchoolisatacrossroadsandmustreposition

itselfinordertomeettheneedsoftheregionalworkforceandtocompetitivelypositionitselfto

ensureasustainablefuture.

ThePlan:TransformtheThompsonSchoolofAppliedSciencetore-focusonourcoreagricultural

missionandtoaugmenttheschoolbyincorporatingastate-of-the-art,jobready,professional

developmentandtrainingacademy.TheOpportunity:Increasingly,asegmentofouraudience—whetherselecthighschoolseniorsor

individualsalreadyintheworkplace—areseekingouthigh-value,affordabletrainingand

professionaldevelopmenttoprepareortransitionthemselvesformeaningfulcareers.Thetrendis

movingtowardscareerandjobreadytraininghappeningoutsideoftheusualtwo-yearandfour-

yeareducationsystem.Thisisparticularlyevidentinthetwo-yeardegreespace,withenrollments

decliningatmostoftheconventional2-yearcompetitorinstitutions.

UNH’sProfessionalDevelopmentandTraining(PD&T),underthedirectionofUNHExtension,has

experiencedsignificantgrowthoverthelastseveralyears.ThisplanwillhelpPD&Ttostrategically

expandtheeffectivenessandimpactofourservicestoNewHampshirebusinesses,residents,and

stakeholdersintermsofthediversityoftheportfolioandthequalityofprogramming.

TheLogic:ThetransitionoftheThompsonSchooltobetterintegrateitsprogramswithinCOLSA

andincorporatePD&Tprogrammingwilllikelyresultinthefollowingbenefits:

• Greateraccessibility,expansion,andincreasedbreadthofcareer,job-readytrainingatUNH

undertheThompsonSchoolbrand;• Theabilitytoretainandstrengthensome,mission-criticalandpotentiallyviableassociate

degreeprogramswithinCOLSA;• Animblebusinessmodeltoallowforimprovedcompetitiveness,futuregrowthandmore

meaningfulalignmentwithstatewideworkforceneeds;• Acost-effectiveandstrategicmanagementstructuretoleadandoverseethiseffort;• Aframeworkforprofessionaleducationandtrainingthatcanexpandtomeettheneedsof

thestateandregion—including,butalsogoingbeyondagricultureandnaturalresources.

Management:PD&TattheThompsonSchoolwouldbeunderthedirectionofUNHCooperative

Extension.ThreeassociatesdegreeprogramswouldcontinueundertheThompsonSchoolbrand

withinCOLSA:AnimalScience,ForestTechnology,andVeterinaryTechnology.Otherassociates

degreeprogramswillbephasedoutoverthenextacademicyear(2019),ensuringthatcurrently

enrolledstudentsareprovidedwithaqualityThompsonSchooleducationthroughgraduation.

Threats:PD&Thasseensteadygrowthinitsnoncreditportfoliooverthelastseveralyears,butitisassumedasaturationpointwillbereachedinthenextseveralyearsintermsofprogram

expansion.Intheassociatesdegreespace,communitycollegesandonlineinstitutionshavealready

identifiedmostofthelow-hangingfruitandoperatewithlowcoststructuresandsignificant

subsidies.Additionalopportunitiesexistinregionalcontinuingeducationspaceaswellas

professionalserviceofferings,buttheymustbecarefullyevaluatedinlightofUNH’suniquevalue

propositionandcompetitiveadvantage.

TheProcess:StrategicvisioningfortheThompsonSchoolhasbeenongoingforthepastfouryears

startingwiththeHuroninitiative(February2014).InSeptember2017,Dr.MiriamNelsonwas

askedbyDeanWraithandProvostTargetttoreinvigoratetheeffort.SinceSeptember,many
