Using Sample Boards for In-terior Design

When it comes to redesigninga room in your home the pos-sibilities can be endless. Un-less you have a clear idea ofcolour and the kind of lookyou want to achieve, it can bereally difficult to know whereto start. Creating a sampleboard can be a very valuableexercise in helping you reachyour decision.

Cost Effective and FunSample boards are a cost effec-tive way of playing with colour,texture and ideas for your newscheme. They are a scaleddown version of what you arehoping to achieve. The advantage of using a sam-ple board is that you can see

whatthe scheme is going to looklike before going ahead, andperhaps avoid costly mistakes.

It really is great fun compil-ing a sample board. On a course I ran last year,people really let their creativejuices flow – from a traditionaldining room to a very brightorange and pink teenager'sroom. It was great fun andcreated much hilarity.

The sample board containssamples of actual productsthat you intend using in theroom, and will give you moreof an idea as to the finisheddécor. You can also see howthe different features in aroom will look and work to-gether, such as flooring, wallcoverings, window dressingsand other soft furnishingsalong with furniture and light-ing. If you can't get hold of a

sample, then a picture or pho-tograph will suffice.

When starting your sampleboard Start with one piece that youwant to build the whole roomaround – it may be yourfavourite armchair, or a cer-tain wallpaper or even the rugyou bought in Morocco on hol-iday last year. A good ideawhen using something you al-ready have, is to take a photoof it and stick the photo onyour sample board to see howit works in relation to other

colours.

When putting together yoursample board Locate the samples in a similarposition to where they wouldbe in the room, for exampleflooring will be placed at thebottom of the sample boardand wall covering towards thetop. It is also a good idea tosize your samples similarly tothose used in the scheme –larger samples for flooring,smaller ones for cushions.

Would-be homeowners arebecoming increasingly hesi-tant to purchase property inthe run up to the generalelection, one expert has sug-gested.

Richard Donnell, director ofresearch at Hometrack, says:"With an election well underway, it is not surprising thatbuyers are currently hesitantin their decision making, thequestion is whether marketsentiment will improve oncethe result of the election isknown."

His comments come in re-sponse to new figures fromthe group, which show that

house prices have grown by0.2 per cent in April - a muchsmaller rise than in previousmonths.

Furthermore, the study alsoreveals that for the first timein 13 months the proportionof homeowners selling theirproperty for its asking pricehas not risen.

Mr Donnell suggests thisdata is evidence of the housingmarket being "on the turn".

A recent survey undertakenby GfK Financial revealed thatfirst-time buyer numbers havenow dropped below 350,000for the first time in twodecades.
