Passing on the gift: This year all of our children’s Sunday School mission projects will

be coordinated as we participate with Heifer International. One of the core, Christian principles

of Heifer is that after their projects are established, families that received resources from Heif-

and Generous Hearts Campaign and throughout the rest of the year, your children will be sav-

ing their pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters and dollars helping people around the world achieve

a sustainable livelihood. Please look for their Christmas cards and calendars during Advent.

Our KMC Membership Committee wishes to express heartfelt gratitude to all who participated and supported our Greeter Program, adults and children; these last months. Summer is now over, fall approaching; we need all current greeters and anyone new interested in being a greeter going forward to continue all efforts to make sure our members, potential new members, visitors are greet-ed and welcomed into our Lord's House!!! Also, a huge reminder to all members and visitors to wear name tags. Remember this is a way for our new members and visitors to identify, learn our names, get to know us and vice-versa! Another important gesture is making sure we sign the Pew Register every Sunday, and make sure we pass to our Visitors, encouraging them to sign and share their contact information! These simple tasks (though small) are HUGE to the potential growth of our congregation and seek-ing God's will for each of us and whatever our service to HIM may be! Please prayerfully consider these requests and do your part faithfully as our Lord & Saviour shows us HIS leadership, guidance and direction on the path that he is taking us these next months ahead. Again, if you are interested in becoming a Greeter and WILLING to receive a GREAT blessing while blessing others, please contact our church office or anyone on the Membership Committee.

From our Parish Nurse: Rabies We humans are encroaching on wild animal habitats. So as a result we are seeing small wild ani-mals in our yards etc. It made me think about rabies and the expectations of our domesticated ani-mals getting rabies vaccinations. Descriptions of rabies go back thousands of years as rabies has classically been one of the most feared infections of all time. It is caused by a bullet-shaped rhabdovirus that is relatively unstable in the environment; establishing infection requires direct con-tact with infected mucous membranes. In most cases, disease is transmitted through a bite wound. Only mammals are susceptible to infection, and wildlife is the primary animal group where infection occurs. When wildlife comes into contact with humans or domestic animals, rabies becomes a public health problem. Despite vaccination being readily available, every year the U.S. reports hundreds of dog and cat deaths from rabies, not to mention several human deaths. Worldwide some 55,000 hu-man deaths from rabies occur and rabies remains an important and nearly untreatable illness even now in the 21st century. Rabies is nearly untreatable once symptoms begin despite all the resources of modern medicine and it is important to take its threat seriously. It is because of rabies that most municipalities have dog licensing requirements in order to ensure that the community's dogs are vaccinated. Happily, rabies prevention is accomplished with vaccination and limiting exposure to wildlife. The standard killed-virus vaccines are available for both dogs and cats and after the initial dose which is good for one year, subsequent doses are generally good for three years. Because of an association with tumor development in cats with killed virus vaccine, a recombinant product is now available that uses a portion of rabies viral DNA cloned into a harmless canary pox virus. This vaccine is just as effective as the traditional vaccines but must be administered annually. Rabies vaccination protocols are typically controlled by municipal regulations. Most communities legally require vaccination of all dogs. The American Association of Feline Practitioners recommends rabies vaccination for all cats. For pets not current on rabies vaccination that have been exposed to biting wildlife, the Texas Post-Exposure Rabies Prophylaxis Protocol has been particularly helpful. In this situation, the pet should be vaccinated for rabies as soon as possible after the wildlife bite with booster vaccines given 3 weeks post-bite and 8 weeks post-bite. The pet should be strictly isolated for 90 days (in California, the law requires a 180-day isolation period). This protocol has been extremely successful in prevent-ing rabies symptoms and contagion when normal rabies vaccination had lapsed.

Community Outreach Committee

October is CROP Hunger Walk month. The CROP Hunger Walk in Forsyth County is 2 miles long through Old Salem. The purpose is to raise money to fight hunger locally and globally. CROP Hun-ger Walk began in 1946 when farmers came together to share their crops with people in Europe who were suffering the devastation from World War II. The first walk in Winston-Salem was held in 1979, and has raised over $1.7 million, bringing together people of different faith communities, cultures, and ages.

The walk is a special opportunity for Moravian congregations in Forsyth County because we have an interest in all three of the ministries supported by the CROP Walk: our own Sunnyside Ministry, Cri-sis Control Ministry, and Church World Service (the Moravian Church is one of the 37 member de-nominations). Through the years the combined total received for Sunnyside and Crisis Control is $426,983. Join the KMC walkers for a fun filled afternoon for the 35

th annual Forsyth County CROP

Hunger Walk on Sunday, October 16, at Corpening Plaza, in downtown Winston-Salem. The walk begins at 2:30 p.m. In addition to walking, there will be other activities including face painting, snow-cones, snacks and music. Sign-up sheets and donation envelopes are available in the office, or by calling Vicky Yates (336-595-9466) or any Community Outreach Team Member. You can also visit www.crophungerwalk.org If you can’t walk that day, you can make a donation or volunteer to help with the event.

The kick-off for the Samaritan Ministries Annual Penny Campaign is this month. In 2015, Penny Campaign raised $57,047. This money is used to provide food and necessities for the shelter located in Winston-Salem. We will provide change jars for each Sunday School class and we will have jars available if you want one for your home. The campaign runs through December 3. Help us to FILL THE JAR! The Tuesday Morning Prayer Group will be attending a prayer rally with Franklin Graham in Raleigh on October 13. Anyone who is interested in attending may contact Angelica Steelman. Moravian Stars' Trip to Barn Dinner Theatre - Thursday, December 15, 2016, 6:00 p.m. Show "How the Buckner Family Saved Christmas" DEADLINE FOR SHOW TICKETS IS MONDAY, OCTOBER 24, 2016. Cost per person $46.00, if we have at least 20 people to sign up to attend. Sheets are on Moravian Stars' board in lower hallway for signing up. If we don't have 20 the cost per person will go up. Congratulations to Ryen Haskins for passing his Eagle Board of Review! Recently, six boys from Troop 944 successfully completed their Ordeals for Order of the Arrow at Camp Raven Knob. This honor society for Boy Scouts focuses on service and giving back to the camp that so many young men enjoy. The Troop took a trip to go whitewater rafting at the French Broad River and also returned to the Virginia Creeper Trail for the 17 mile bike ride and camping trip. Upcoming camping trips include an adventure to the beach where the boys will go to Fort Fisher. The Troop will also be working with other local Boy Scout Troops to clean up the historic cemetery here in Kernersville. October brings Boy Scout Popcorn sales, thank you for always generously supporting this endeavor. Any boy in 5th grade who is interested in be-coming a Boy Scout next year is invited to visit our Troop. We meet on Tuesday evenings at 7 p.m. and would love to talk to him about Scouting. Thank you to the congregation at Kernersville Moravian for its continued support of our boys and the Scouting Program. Mission Sunday will be October 23. Our Reverend Cindy Williams will be guest speaker at both ser-vices. The entire congregation is invited to a pot luck luncheon after the 11:00 service. Cindy Williams and Don Vance have a very informative and interesting presentation from their mission trip this summer to Ray of Hope Orphanage, in Kenya, Africa. Please make plans to come and support our KMC Team. KMC-Shredding Event - Start cleaning out those important papers that need to be shredded. The event will be on Saturday, November 12 from 10 a.m - 1 p.m. Proceeds go to support Youth Missions and Global Missions. Help spread the word to your family and neighbors. Nursery Information - This has been a year of change for our nursery area. Our goal is to provide a safe, happy environment for our young families. To that end, we decided to continue to have a paid em-ployee available each Sunday morning, usually the same person. To assist her, we are asking for congre-gational volunteers. We have two time slots – from 8:30 a.m. until Sunday School starts and from 10:45 a.m. until church is over. During this time, we simply engage the children, encouraging them as they create Lego masterpieces, play with puzzles, read, draw, or serve up fancy meals, usually hotdogs. We also decided to provide childcare two nights a week so that our parents with young children could more fully participate in church life. We have hired someone to be available during those times, but we also want to provide a congregational volunteer to assist her. Again, the primary role of the volunteer is to be another set of eyes and hands, actively playing with the children. This is still fairly new and we may continue to make changes, but our current time slots are each Monday, from 6:15 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. (or when children are gone) and each Wednesday, from 5:55 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. (or when children are gone). Who can volunteer? We are working towards using the guidelines provided in our Safe Sanctuary policy and we will ask that each volunteer undergo drug testing and a criminal background check. If you have not yet done this, please let Lisa Mullen know. This process will take time, so you may continue to volun-teer in the interim. We are looking for additional people to volunteer in the nursery. Come with gladness in your heart and you will be amazed by our children. This is not a hard job, but it is very important. We recognize that evenings are hard for most of us – we all eagerly long for soft, fuzzy slippers and com-fy couches – but if we wait for our ideal time to volunteer, we may miss a wonderful opportunity. To volun-teer, simply sign-up on the sheet provided outside the nursery, or call the church office.

CANDLE TEA UPDATE

SAVE THE DATE

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 10, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Begin now to invite friends and neighbors to save this date for celebrating the 2016 new and exciting Candle Tea. The committee is continuing with plans to involve the congregation in all aspects of the Candle Tea and as usual, we will need folks to participate in the following:

CRAFTS WORKSHOP - See related article below.

BAKED GOODS - We would appreciate the usual cakes, pies, breads, etc. but would like to add small amounts of homemade candies, peanut brittle, cheese straws, pickles, jellies, Russian Tea and hot chocolate mixes if possible.

SIGN UP SHEETS - will be circulated to classes and groups during November and we hope you will be able to take part in this event.

The Candle Tea was organized more than 25 years ago as a gift to the Kernersville Community. It has been a wonderful way to introduce who we are as Moravians to folks who move to our area. We hope you will make plans to participate and attend this “Kernersville Christmas Tradition” with family and friends.

CANDLE TEA CRAFT WORKSHOP

A workshop to make crafts for sale at Candle Tea will be held on Wednesday, October 26, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. Carol Vance has agreed to lead the group in making artifi-cial advent wreaths as well as a brief bow making session. Some smaller crafts items will be made during the evening. Nursery provided. Please make plans to attend all or any part of the workshop to assist us in making items to enhance our Candle Tea.
