Happy to report that our first Fundraiser Movie Night went very well, and that many people suggested we should do it again. Though only 93 people actually made it to Avoca Beach Picture Theatre on the night, the event was clearly a financial success, with over $1,000 raised. Most of this was voted towards refurbishment of our practice nets, though a small amount has been directed towards our clubhouse building fund. The evening started off with a cheese & nibbles smorgasbord, with the tinkle of wine glasses and beer bottles as background music to the happy chatter of friends and guests. Shortly before the movie commenced, our Vice-President Mark Smith (and MC for the night) organised the raffle draw of the lovely meat tray donated by Hodges Butchery (won by Antonio Medura from Eagle Self Storage). This was followed up with the draw of our lucky door prize donated by Narara Valley Nursery (won by Mal & Bec Barsing) just before the film rolled. With the leverage afforded by a dollar-for-dollar grant, we hope to nearly double the value of the money raised to total of around $2,000 worth of

capital works for our club. Whilst I thank everyone that turned up on the night, certain businesses and individuals deserve special recognition:• Thanks to our club sponsors Hodges Butchery & Narara Valley Nursery for your kindness in providing the raffle & lucky door prizes – this added some glamour & revenue to the event.• David Smallman for your generous $100 donation – kicking us over the line to $1,000•J an Smallman for assisting me in rustling up support from our Life Member fraternity• Louise Montgomery - 6 tickets sold• Junior Committee – 8 tickets sold• Kathleen Ness – 10 tickets • Sue Ness (with a bit of help) – 21 tickets• I’d especially like to acknowledge the assistance of Rob Blandford, Stuart Owen and Hamish Millen on the night, and my wife Sue’s extensive support in many aspects of this venture, including food preparation & presentation on the day.• Lastly – a BIG thankyou to Avoca Beach Picture Theatre – a very supportive sponsor.

Under 11As - Round 14, 24th JanuaryNWCC v Northern Power at Maidens Brush (Wyoming)

Northern Power won the toss and sent Narara in to bat, and bat the boys did! Runs flowed, with Liam Buckley and Alexander Bell both retiring, and fine contributions coming from Dillon Buckley 19 and Aaron Stanbury 18 runs.

Northern Power were set 114 runs to win. Narara’ s effort in the field was terrific. Great catches were taken by Cody Starr, Dev Singh and and Harry Hudson and Northern Power struggled to make runs, with good bowling from all of the NWCC team. Northern Power were bundled out for 23 runs in 15 overs. Bowlers sharing wickets were Liam Buckley 2/2, Josh Hanlon 2/1, Alexander Bell 1/4 and Cody Starr 1/2. A great team effort by Narara.

Round 15 - 31st January, 2015NWCC v The Entrance, played at Alan Davidson Park (Wyoming) Narara won the toss and put The Entrance in. Great bowling and fielding limited the runs with The Entrance scoring 45 all out. D Singh took 2/8, L Buckley 1/2, D Buckley 2/5, and N Rohen 2/4. Catches were held and

fielding was tight and The Entrance total of 45 runs was chased down in 14 overs, with D Singh retiring on 20 runs.

Round 16, 7th February, 2015NWCC v Kincumber Green played at Erina High School

Narara won the toss and elected to field. It was a batsman’s day with three Kincumber batsmen retiring and few wickets falling. Kincumber set Narara 113runs to chase. Narara also batted well with L. Buckley, J Hanlon, D Buckley and Alex Bell retiring. Narara chased down the runs and took the points. Bowlers from both teams had a tough day.

Under 15C After some changes to the competition structure with two teams moving down from the 15B division, all games in the 15C division for the remainder of the season reverted to one day format.

In Round 8 we were sent in by Kincumber and had a shaky start before a 50 run partnership between Ryan Jones (19) and Harry Moriarty (46) helped us achieve a competitive total of 4 for 99 from our 25 overs. Without one of our regular keepers, Mike Hood

took the gloves and secured a nice caught behind off Dale Fish’s bowling. Some tight bowling overall, supported by two run outs from Lachlan Fitzgerald and Ryan J, allowed us to restrict the Griffons to 5 for 68 from their 25. Not bad considering we only had nine players.

In Round 9 we came up against Brisbane Water who had just been moved down from the Bs. They batted first and gave us a lesson in running between the wickets as they stole singles on their way to 7 for 117 (from 25). Best of our bowlers were Jayden Fender (2/8) an Zane Montgomery (2/11). Zane also took a great outfield catch and Harry picked up two catches. In reply, we found the going tough against a high quality bowling line-up and lost wickets regularly until in the 11th over we were 7-21. Ryan J (13no) then joined Jayden (23no) to bat the remaining 14 overs to take our score up to 7-61. Clearly we were well short of the target so there will be a lot of improvement needed to be competitive against Brisbane Water if we face them again. In Round 10 we came up against The Entrance who had beaten us in a close one prior to Christmas. This time The Entrance batted first and we bowled well to restrict them to 7 for 71 from 25). Liam Hassall (2/11) was the pick of our bowlers getting consecutive wickets caught well at second slip by Ryan J. In reply we started slowly being 2-23 at the half way mark. After drinks, Harry (14) and then Lachlan (32) upped the run rate to get us home in the last over (7 for 74).In Round 11 we were sent in by Kincumber and struggled our way to be all out for 75 in 24 overs. Lachlan (18) and Jayden (19) showed stout resistance but lacked support from their teammates. Defending that score was going to be tough but the boys stuck to their guns. Zane (2/5) bowled brilliantly and was well supported by Ryan J, Riley Borthwick, Ryan Sivas, Dale Fish, Harry and Mike who picked up wicket each. It was enough to keep Kincumber to 8-67 from their 25 and secure another close win.In Round 12 we chose to bat first against Southern Spirit Grammar Green. Liam and Jayden (27) took on their top line opening bowlers for the first ten overs which was a great effort. After that, Harry (20no) built a couple of partnerships with Antonio Peng and Mik to sneak us to 7 for 103 (from 25). SS Grammar came out blazing and were 1-59 after 11 overs before Antonio (2/3) made the big breakthrough. We then took 5 wickets in the space of two runs to turn the game. Liam (2/2) and Ryan J (2/9) ripped through while Jayden and Mike picked up one apiece. Good catching from Lachlan,

Ryan S, Harry and Jayden saw us take all of our chances as we dismissed SS Grammar for 84.In Round 13 we were sent in by Terrigal and had our best opening partnership of the season between Ryan J (33) and Riley (13 retired). Zane (13) and Harry (10) added some quick runs at the end to boost our score to 2 for 90 (from a rain-shortened 23 overs). During our change of innings fielding warm-up, Riley suffered a serious leg fracture requiring hospitalisation and procedure under anaesthetic. This was extremely unfortunate as Riley had just payed his best innings of the season. We all wish Riley a complete recovery. Keegan Montgomery stepped in to field for us as we were already playing with just 10 men, so losing Riley would have had us down to nine. In reply, Terrigal made steady progress but we picked up regular wickets to keep the game in the balance. Dale Fish (2/15) and Antonio (2/5) made some crucial breakthroughs. FieldingZane, Harry and Liam also picked up wickets and some crucial run outs at the finish saw us squeeze home by keeping Terrigal to 9 for 88, a winning margin of two runs.In Round 14 we elected to bat first on our first match against Southern Spirit who have been in the top two all season. Jayden a(21) and Lachlan (17) showed intent to have us 2 for 49 before we lost four quick wickets. Harry (25) had a couple of good partnerships with Ryan J and Liam to get us to 8 for 100 (from 24) as we only had nine players. We defended the score as hard as we could with just nine fielders making it very difficult. Zane (2/11) and Jayden (2/8) made crucial breakthroughs while Antonio, Lachlan , Harry and Mike all picked up important wickets. We went down in the sec ond last over with them 8 down. So close given our fielding disadvantage. In Round 15 Southern Spirit Grammar Gold chose to bat first. We bowled exceptionally well to dismiss the opposition for 35 in 17.4 overs. Jayden and Dale took early wickets before Antonio (3/2) ‘the destroyer’ took three wickets in four balls to rip through the heart of the order. Mike, Zane, Ryan S and Liam picked up the other wickets before Zane had a direct hit run out from the covers. We made short work of the chase passing them 1 down in 9 overs as Zane (17no) hit some timely form with

the bat.

Congratulations 15Cs on your season so far, winning the minor premiership as a result of prevailing in so many close matches. Whatever happens from here is a bonus and we hope you enjoy the semi final experience and continue to play the game in the right spirit as you have done all season. Go well.

Paul Moriarty

Div 3 - Round 8 (13th & 20th December 2014)NWCC vs Northern Power at Alan Davidson Oval

Day One saw ‘no play’ across the coast in Div 3 as two of the four grounds to be used were unplayable. Day Two saw the boys from north win the toss and elect to bat, with Pete Richardson (Richo) and Adam Montgomery (the Yak) opening proceedings for us, the latter bowling his 8 overs straight, and picking up the first 3 wickets. Then, for a number of our guys, the wheels fell off their fielding, as we grassed 9 catches in the remainder of the game. In the midst of the ‘butterfingers period’, we somehow managed to hang on to another 9, including a screamer to our superstar fill-in Ben Wilkinson, showing the fumblers how it’s done. Stuart Owen (Sweetie) chimed in with 3 wickets, while Phil Anderson (Ando or VernonPhilAnderson) and Richo scalped 2 each to snuff out the Power for 141 in 38.4 overs.

The chase began in disastrous fashion with Sweetie calling Crowey through for a run that was never there. Ando and Sweetie came together and righted the ship. Again we lost both of them in quick succession, failing to consolidate the loss of wicket to be 3 for 44 of which Phil had 28. We then lost wickets without any major partnerships to be 5 for 78, then 6 for 105 when the Skip lost some poles to the Power’s usual wicket keeper. Fortunately the Yak and Kered (aka B1, Crossfit, 3PO, Lloyd) combined for an unbeaten stand that took us to victory with 3 overs to spare, B1 notching 44 not out.

While we came away with the points we were far from good in the field, or with the bat, in what should have been an easy win. Mal Barsing

Division 4Round 13 (14th and 21st February, 2015)NWCC vs Warnervale at Mascord Park (Wadalba) Once again I managed to lose the toss (0-5 since taking over the captaincy) and Warnervale chose to bat. We knew we were in for a tough match as Warnervale were top of the table, but once again James Ryan (10 overs 2/29) and Jeff Monin bowled tightly at the start of the innings and we had Warnervale 2/28 in the early stages. They then put together a steadying 50 run partnership before we again took 3 quick wickets having them in trouble at 5/89. Some tight bowling through the middle overs helped us restrict Warnervale to 6/106 at tea and we were pretty confident we could keep them to a smallish total. Once again Neil Dixon proved he is a better asset as a bowler than wicket keeper with another brilliant spell of 12 overs straight 2/34. Jeff Monin was

brought back for a second spell after tea and he once again bowled tightly to finish with the great figures of 16 overs 11 maidens 3/13. After tea Warnervale managed a good partnership again but with the last 4 wickets falling steadily we had them all out for 144 in the 59th over. All the other bowlers chipped in with decent figures, though Jordan Cairns (4.3 overs 1/13) and myself (10 overs 2/30) were the only two to take wickets. In any case it was another good team performance with the bowling in this game. So we only had 11 overs to survive for the day, but unfortunately we were unable to do so and finished at 3/20. I was still confident heading into the second day as we still had a couple of experienced batsmen at the crease and a couple more in the sheds. Mick Post (24) and Bruce Randall (17) got us off to a steady start, but that was about it as we lost wickets steadily and were unable to build any meaningful partnerships. We were bundled out for 91 in the 55th over. The boys still played well but unfortunately we were outclassed by a better side - Warnervale proved why they were at the top of the table. Heading into the last game of the season we are playing another top 4 side in Wyong but with the belief and the way the boys are playing for each other now, I am confident we can produce an upset.

Round 14 (28th Feb and 7th March)NWCC v Wyong at Alan Davidson Park (Wyoming) I managed to lose the toss once again which meant I was 0-6 since taking over the captaincy. Wyong sent us in on a hot day which we were quite happy about. We got into early trouble losing Jeff Monin in only the 4th over of the match, but a steadying partnership between Neil Dixon and Bruce Randall had us back on track before Neil fell for 26 with the score on 50. We then lost a couple of quick wickets to be 4-79 and in a bit of trouble. But once again another good partnership was formed between Ryan Connolly and Nick Lulham (Nicko) who steered us to tea with the score on 4-126. After the tea break I told the boys to keep going at a steady pace, and I would tell them to unleash. I gave Nicko the signal which he responded

to with great glee - he managed to shell one of their medium pacers 3 metres over the boundary for a well-deserved six. (…after which he stayed down on one knee for some time, just to admire his work !!) Nicko continued to attack until he finally fell for a well-compiled 37 runs. Nick and Ryan Connolly had managed to boost the total up to 5-171 with a great partnership of 92runs. I then came out and immediately dispatched a young bowlers of theirs for 6,4,4 off the last 3 balls of his over. (…and we never saw him again !) With the overs starting to run out both Ryan and I set about making some quick runs, before I fell on 25 going for a six to cow corner, but unfortunately fell 1 metre short of my target. We had managed a 59 run partnership, and taken our score up to 230. I gave the rest of the guys the message to score as many runs as they could and we lost wickets at a fairly rapid rate from then on, but not before Ryan made a well-compiled 86 runs. He went down swinging, as he tried to bring up his ton in the last over of our innings. We ended up setting Wyong a respectable total of 241 to chase as we batted out our 70 overs. Starting the next week I was pretty confident that our bowlers could defend our total as we had been bowling well as a unit in our past 4 matches. Jeff Monin (1/73) got us off to a great start taking a wicket from only his second ball and continued to bowl well early on in tandem with James Ryan (2/32). They had Wyong in a lot of trouble after 12 overs sitting at 3-26. Jordan Cairns (1/21) and myself (2/64) came on and continued to pile on the pressure and with Jordy picking up an early wicket we had them reeling at 4-37. They then dug in and formed a good partnership with some sensible batting to have us a bit frustrated shortly before the tea break. That was until I took 2 quick wickets and put myself on my third hat trick for the season, but alas I missed it once again.

Page 7: The Roar 2014-15 Vol 7

7The Roar

Finals glory beckons

I brought on Neil Dixon (2/30) to bowl his off spin just before tea and he had an immediate impact - picking up a wicket in his second over. We went to tea in a strong position with Wyong 7-90. After tea we continued to bowl tightly for a while and after a couple of dropped catches and some contentious LBW decisions turned down, the game could have been all but over. However, the two batsmen at the crease rode their luck and put together a 126 run partnership which had all but won them the match with the score now 8 for 206. They did not lose another wicket after that and cruised to a 2 wicket win, with 4 overs to go in the match. I was proud of the boys efforts as they never gave up, and played hard until the final ball was bowled. Unfortunately 5 dropped catches in the match probably sealed our fate. It was another strong showing by the team and really typified our spirit of never giving in, and despite playing a lot of sides higher on the ladder than us going into the final games we still managed a good record of 4 wins from 6 matches since I had taken over the captaincy. As it was, the only 2 matches we did lose were to the sides that finished 1st and 3rd on the ladder and we were really competitive in both those games and could have easily won those too. All-in-all a good finish to the season by the guys and looking forward to hopefully playing together again next year. Geoff Christy

Division 5Round 9 - Narara vs. Northern Power at Carrington St2015 started off with Narara home at Carrington for a one-dayer, playing the boys from the North, who won the toss and elected to bowl. We never really got off the ground with the bat, losing both openers early, followed by regular wickets,

looking fairly unstable until at 7-59, a partnership developed between Luke Van Dee Zee and Todd Hart, who were looking promising until Luke fell, after a great effort stabilising the side. Unfortunately, Narara was dismissed in the last over of the innings for 92. Best of the batters was last man out Todd Hart with 26 and Luke Van Dee Zee on 19.After the Tea break the Div 5 boys strode to the field to attempt the upset. Despite having a small score to defend, the Narara spirit was in full force. The bowlers never gave up and the fielders were constantly chirping away, supporting the bowlers. Todd Hart backed up his performance with the bat with a fiery spell with the new ball, and was unlucky not to pick up a couple of wickets. Unfortunately, 92 proved too small a total to defend. Chris Rowan was the best with the ball, picking up 2 wickets for 19 runs off 5 overs. A wicket each to James Everton and Jake Wanner (hissssss) resulted in Northern Power winning by 6 wickets

Round 10 – Narara vs. Kincumber-Avoca at Heazlett ParkWe travelled to sunny Heazlett Park at Avoca for a two day encounter against Kincumber. We let the home side win the toss, and were put into the field. James Everton took the new pill, along with Captain Chris Rowan, who opened the innings beautifully with some great tight bowling, including 2 early wickets for James. Unfortunately it took 111 runs until we took our next victim, despite a half-dozen balls that landed just short or out of reach of eager hands. After a few more small partnerships, Kincumber were 5 for 194, and the Narara boys removed the rest of the batters efficiently, and we bowled out Kincumber for 237 in the last over of the day. The whole side fielded well, and we took 6 catches and a run out. The pick of the bowlers was James Everton with 13 overs, 4 for 33, and Luke Van Dee Zee with 2 crucial partnership breakers. We turned up the following week, fairly confident if we could just play our game, we could amass the score. Unfortunately, a lot of us forgot how to bat this week, and at 7-18, we were in deep strife. A steady partnership formed between Chris Rowan and Peter Sherwood, progressing the score to 62 before Chris fell 4 short

of a half-century. Not long later, we were dismissed for 66. We were asked to bat again. This time, we mounted a better defence, but not by much. Craig Coskerie started up with a solid 43, but it was not enough, and we were dismissed with 5 overs to go for 96. Kincumber win outright

Round 11 – Narara vs. The Entrance at Carrington StBack home at Carrington for a one-day game, we won the toss and elected to field. It was hard going at the start, with only 2 wickets falling in the first hundred runs. From there however, it was a different story, with a slew of wickets falling, including Chris Rowan having 4-1 at one point. Some late hitting at the end pulled The Entrance to 8/166 after their allotted overs.Tea came and went, and we went out to bat, but we had not learned anything from the disaster at Avoca. There is little to report, and we were dismissed for 43. Luke Dean top scored with 13.

Round 12 - Narara vs. Warnervale at Mascord ParkAfter some disappointing performances, we were looking to get back to form at Mascord Park, Warnervale. We were sent to the field, and Brandon Dale proved that was a mistake. With 2 wickets in his first 2 overs, and another 3 in his remaining 5, Brandon demolished the top order, with good support from an unlucky James Everton. After 14 overs, we had them 5/37, a great start. The good work continued, and dismissed Warnervale for 115 in 30 overs. We picked up the bat, our current Kryptonite. Things looked bleak after losing our two openers for 0, but that brought Luke Van Dee Zee (36) and Craig Coskerie (20) together, who were looking rock solid, if a little slow. Just as they started to put the foot down, wickets fell, and unfortunately, we were all out for 98. A good thing to pull from the game, is that we were competitive for the first time in a game for a long time, and is the 4th game this season we’ve lost by less than 20. Chin up boys, with a bit of work, we can finish one of these games strongly.

Division 5Round 13 Narara vs Lisarow at Carrington Street. We lost the toss and were sent in to bat. We got off to a steady start but were unable to get a strong partnership together. In saying that, we were 4-80 with Craig Coskerie (26), President Stuckey (21) and the skipper (15) all making contributions but failing to take advantage of their good starts. Unfortunately we were unable to sustain the reasonable start losing our last 6 wickets for 7 runs and surrendering for a meek 87.Lisarow come out with all guns blazing and smashed 8 declared for 264 off only 27 overs. Brandon Dale and Pete Ness bowled well taking a few wickets but all of the bowlers took some stick. We headed back to the crease to attempt to hold off the outright. Peter Stuckey (22) and Michael Hari (15) shared a solid opening partnership of 43 but once they departed the resistance went with them and we were rolled for 76.Thanks to the boys from Div 3 who come along to support and score during the afternoon. Your support was appreciated.
