THE DEFEAT OF THE CYBER BULLY: LESSON PLAN

GOALTo raise awareness of cyber safety issues (specifically the social issue of bullying) for young children through traditional early childhood education methods including family and classroom reading opportunities, hands on experiences, and interactive learning.

OBJECTIVESNote: Conduct lesson plan for The Savvy Cyber Kids at Home: The Family gets a Computer before starting this lesson.

1. The student will understand appropriate responses to cyber bullying (and traditional bullying)

2. The student will think about and identify their trusted adults while conducting a handson creative activity

PROCEDURES1. Read Aloud/Think Aloud - Starts with focus questions, while the facilitator is reading aloud, the facilitator poses questions

to the kids for them to think about. Sample questions

a. What is a bully? b. Have any of you ever been bullied? c. If you have been a target of a bully, what did you do? d. Who did you tell?

2. Model for the students how you would identify someone you trusted. Explain some of the traits you would look for in such a person.

3. Discuss the idea of not standing by while someone else is being bullied.

4. Activity Sheet 1 – Draw (and decorate) two trusted adults (parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, teacher, etc.)

5. Activity Sheet 2 (for older students) – Cross Word Puzzle

6. Activity Sheet 3 (for older students) – Cryptogram

7. Introduction of students with their online identity name (created in Lesson Plan 1) and who they chose to draw/decorate as their trusted adults.

8. Review focus questions.
