Nearly 1,000 photos were entered during this year’s Savvy Kids Cover Contest—the most ever! The winners are Benjamin and Noah Yarberry and our judges couldn’t resist these adorable twins! Second place winner is Alyssa Hamilton and the third place winner is Mariya Wright. Our judges spent days going back and forth about who they thought should be on the cover. We are currently reading a great nonfiction book, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Music: Vampire WeekendPlace to shop for you: We love browsing in Tuesday Morning in Conway, although we spend many hours haunting the local home improvement stores. Place to shop for kids: The kids like Target for the great selection of toys and electronics.Family Activity: We love our annual float trip down the Buffalo River and swimming trips to Long Pool.Restaurant: Zaza’s Fine Salad and Wood-Oven Pizza Co.Guilty pleasure: Eating popcorn and watching Dr. Who marathons as a family.Place to go for date night: Mike’s Place in Conway- great food and great atmosphere.Vacation destination: We try to travel anywhere new- we love the adven-ture of discovering a new place. “His teammates call him ‘Scrappy’,” Stephanie Belin said of her son, Hunter. The 10-year-old wide receiver for the Central Arkansas Youth Bengals Football team admitted he was a little guy, but after meeting Hunter it’s easy to see his stature does not reflect his kind and caring attitude.

Last fall, Hunter helped clean up Delmont Park in Sherwood. It was no easy task either. Hunter helped rake and bag leaves and even helped remove old, broken down equipment to make the park safer for area children. “It made me feel good,” Hunter recalled of his clean-up efforts. “I didn’t realize I was doing something to help others because I had fun doing it.”

Having fun while working seemed to be the attitude Hunter held on to during all his projects. As a member of the Central Arkansas Youth Bengals Football and Cheer Program, Hunter has been working during the hot summer weekends at carwash fundraisers for his team. Together the Bengals are working to raise money for the Susan G. Koman for the Cure organization. The boys also hope to be a part of the Three Miles of Men during the Race for the Cure this fall. “Working at a carwash doesn’t seem fun, but when you get soap all over the place and you’re with your friends, it becomes fun,” Hunter explained.

Most recently, Hunter helped his church, First Baptist Church of Sherwood, during Vacation Bible School. The church was collecting school supplies to donate to area kids in need. Hunter filled two backpacks full of supplies—crayons, paint, paper, scissors, glue—with his own money. “My mom bought the backpacts,” Hunter added, modestly.

At his church, Hunter is a member of the Royal Ambassadors (RA). Together they have participated in missions, made Valentines and mailed them to residents in the community who might not otherwise receive a Valentine card, and raised money to buy canned goods to donate to the Arkansas Food Bank.

When asked what advice he would give his peers on how to get started volunteering in the community, Hunter said, “Figure out what you want to do and then find a way to make it fun.”

I still remember each of my school principals. One in particular stands out in my mind. Mr. James Simmons. He was my elementary school principal. Mr. Simmons stood at the front door of the school every morning waiting to shake hands and give high-fives to the students as they were dropped off. The first day of school was always a grand affair—he would wear a tuxedo and roll out a red carpet. He even carried Atomic Fire Ball candies in his pocket and he would hand them out to students to keep them “fired up” about education. Mr. Simmons was also my high school principal. On graduation day, we all had a Fire Ball in our pocket and as we walked across the stage to shake Mr. Simmons’ hand for the

last time, we each handed him our candy—a small but heartfelt thank you to an educator we grew up with.

But, being a principal or head of school is not all Fire Balls and hand shakes. Leading a school is a big responsibility! We wanted our readers to really meet the people leading their schools. We asked some of our young Savvy Kids readers what they would ask their school principal or head of school if they had the chance to interview them. On the following pages are just a few of the many central Arkansas public and private school principals and head of schools and their answers to our questions.

How long have you been a principal? I've been principal for 14 years at Fulbright and 18 years as a vice-principal at Williams Magnet Did you teach before you became a principal? I taught second, third, fourth and fifth grades What is your favorite thing about being a principal? Having students smile and enjoy learning and showing school spirit and pride Helping people achieve dreams and give opportunities to grow. Teacher and parent excitement when it comes to helping our students grow and achieve high standards. What is one scholastic achievement your school has made that you are the most proud of? The growth and academic achievement of Fulbright in the last 14 years along with the great parental involvement and outstanding teaching staff

When you were a kid... What did you want to be when you grew up? I always wanted to be a teacher.

Did you ever get nervous on the first day? NO, I was always excited about seeing friends and wearing new clothes! What were some of the extra-curricular activities you were involved with? Student council, choir, pep club, Girl Scout, drama club What was your opinion of your school’s principal and did he/she inspire you to become an educator? My principal was great especially since he was my dad… he inspired me and other students to do their best. He showed me that I could to anything I put my mind to. He always knew us by name and that education was important and to never stop learning.

How long have you been a principal? I am entering my 22nd year as an elementary principal.

Did you teach before you became a principal? Yes, I taught kindergarten, resource (special education), third grade. I was also a Special Education Coordinator. What is your favorite thing about being a principal? Being a principal is an involved fast-paced job, but in the middle of it all is one of my favorite things…the joy of children learning, the joy of their innocence. They are like “sponges” and to watch them as they form their own understanding of their world brings about a special kind of joy.

What is one scholastic achievement your school has made that you are the most proud of? In 2008, Clinton received national recognition as a “Blue Ribbon School”. An honor given to identified schools for student achievement.

When you were a kid... What did you want to be when you grew up? I have always loved the arts. I wanted to be a dancer. What was your favorite subject in school? Most of the time, my favorite subject was math, but I really think it had a lot to do with the teacher.

Did you ever get nervous on the first day? Yes, and after all of these years, I still do. I take a deep breath, say to myself, “It’s time and we’re ready to have the best year ever.

What were some of the extra-curricular activities you were involved with? That was many years ago. I was involved in the student council, honor society, dance team, and drill team. I always wanted to play basketball, but girls were not allowed to play.

Jackye ParkerPrincipal, Clinton Magnet School

How long have you been a principal? I am going into my sixth year as Upper School Principal (grades 6-12) at Little Rock Christian Academy. I have served in school administration for 29 years in three schools. Did you teach before you became a principal? I have always worked in administration, but taught about half of my time the first several years. Mostly I taught middle school and high school English and Bible. What is your favorite thing about being a principal? I love seeing students grow and learn! Oh, and I really enjoy the fact that every day is unique and full of excitement. What is one scholastic achievement your school has made that you are the most proud of? Probably the ACT College Readiness Award the last two years because it not only points to excellent top scores but also the progress of the broader range of students.

When you were a kid... What did you want to be when you grew up? Seriously, I wanted to be a policeman! I had even begun applying during college, but God steered me a different direction. What was your favorite subject in school? Math. I still enjoy reading books about Math, which is considered pretty strange. Did you ever get nervous on the first day of school? I still get nervous on the first day! As an administrator, I just want it to go smoothly so that all the students and teachers have a positive first day. What were some of the extra-curricular activities you were involved with? Several, including things like editor of the school paper, track, and honor society. But, my favorites were having letters on my letter jacket for chess team and football. I had a great time being teased by both groups!

How long have you been a principal? This will be my fifth year at Lakewood Elementary.

Did you teach before you became a principal? If so, what subject/grade? I taught Kindergarten for six years, I was an elementary school counselor for 11 years, and an assistant principal for two years.

What is your favorite thing about being a principal? I love my students, teachers, and staff! I am so blessed to work with such an amazing group of children and adults.

What is one scholastic achievement your school has made that you are the most proud of?Our school has met adequate yearly progress each year. I am so proud of my teachers! They all work hard and set high expectations so that each child reaches their academic potential.

When you were a kid... What did you want to be when you grew up? I always knew I wanted to work with children.

What was your favorite subject? Reading, English, and Social Studies

Did you ever get nervous on the first day? Not really, I was excited to see my friends and teachers.

What were some of the extra-curricular activities you were involved with? I was involved in numerous clubs both academically and socially.

What was your opinion of your school’s principal and did he/she inspire you to become an educator? I have been very lucky to be surrounded by good administrators. I have also worked for some of the best principals in the North Little Rock School District!



How long have you been head of school?I have served as head of school since May 2005 - 6 years Did you teach before you became head of school? I coached basketball and track, and taught science. My coaching experience at the collegiate level included three years at Ouachita Baptist University and Division I level four years at The University of Texas, Austin. What is your favorite thing about being head of school?At The Anthony School you can literally watch the children grow from the age of three until it is time for them to graduate from Anthony. There are many favorites at our school, but I really enjoy watching the students gain the confidence and emotional maturity that I know will help them be successful at the next level. Although I must admit I love watching our three and four year old students skate, a tradition since the founding of the school by Jeanne Anthony.

When you were a kid... What did you want to be when you grew up?My first dream was to be a pharmacist. It didn’t take long, though, to understand becoming a basketball coach would be my lifelong dream. Did you ever get nervous on the first day? Nervousness was overridden by excitement. I can’t recall ever being nervous about going to school as a student or employee. I graduated from Star City High School in the small community where everyone felt comfortable with one another.

What were some of the extra-curricular activities you were involved with?I participated in all athletic opportunities for girls, business clubs offered, and yearbook/journalism and in school plays. These were at the top of my list of favorites.

How long have you been a principal? This is my first year as the Principal. I have been the Assistant Principal here for the past 12 years. Did you teach before you became a principal? I taught sixth grade at Beryl Henry in Hope for five years. I taught Social Studies, Science and Reading. What is your favorite thing about being a principal? I love being around the kids. They are so full of life. They make choices every day that will affect them for the rest of their life. I want to be involved in their decision making and try to make it a positive one. At the fourth and fifth grade level, students begin to make choice that will dictate which directions they will go in life. My job is to try and convince them which decisions are best. We want our students to make good choices so they will become productive citizens in society and not the ones that the tax payer have to fund.

When you were a kid... What did you want to be when you grew up? When I was a real young, I was like most other kids and wanted to be a professional baseball player. But that dream left pretty quickly. I really didn’t know what I wanted to do until I was in my second year of college. Education runs in my family and so I think I made the right choice.

What was your favorite subject? I love PE. I am a sports fanatic. But beside that, History has always been a subject that is dear to my heart.

Did you ever get nervous on the first day? Everyone should get nervous on the first day. I do not care if you have done this job for 50 years. The first day is always exciting and filled with new beginnings. Just knowing that I am getting the chance to make a difference in someone’s life, make me nervous now.

How long have you been head of school Episcopal Collegiate?14 years Did you teach before you became head of school? I taught United States History, Economics, AP Macroeconomics, Global Issues, and Physical Education. What is your favorite thing about being head of school?The opportunity to be surrounded every day by such an extraordinary group of young people and teachers is a great blessing. For me, I cannot think of anything more professionally rewarding. What is one scholastic achievement your school has made that you are the most proud of?Every student who has graduated from Episcopal Collegiate has been accepted to college. In addition, we were honored that the prestigious Cum Laude Society awarded our school a chapter in our very first year of eligibility. Very few schools in the country have ever achieved that distinction.

When you were a kid... What did you want to be when you grew up? I really wanted to be a basketball/baseball player or teacher.

What was your favorite subject in school? I loved United States history.

Did you ever get nervous on the first day? Because I had the good fortune to have a strong group of friends who stayed together throughout most of my schooling, I don’t recall getting nervous on the first day. I do recall, however, having a bit of anticipation regarding what the expectations of my new teachers might be.

What were some of the extra-curricular activities you were involved with?Some of my favorite activities were Athletics, Student Council, Yearbook and Student Newspaper

How long have you been a principal? I was principal of Morrilton High School for the last four years. This is going to be my first year in Maumelle at the high school.

What is your favorite thing about being a principal? Seeing the look of success on the face of parents on graduation night when their children have made it! I particularly enjoy seeing the look of relief on those parents of troubled students who barely made it, but also those parents of students who have worked hard and achieved and their hard work has paid off.

What inspired you to become an educator? I had an awesome high school math teacher named Karen Miller who exemplified what I know now to be effective teaching. Ms. Miller taught all of the honors math classes so I had her all of high school with the exception of my junior year—which was a direct contrast—so I learned to appreciate good teaching and desired to be just like her.

When you were a kid... What did you want to be when you grew up? Initially I wanted to be a medical doctor.

Did you ever get nervous on the first day? I loved the academic aspect of school. I’ve always enjoyed learning.

What were some of the extra-curricular activities you were involved with? Student Council President, Beta Club, Mu Alpha Theta, and Future Teachers of America

What was your opinion of your school’s principal/headmaster/head of school and did he/she inspire you to become an educator? I think my leadership style is more aligned with my high school assistant principal than the principal. However, I do think that my principal did a great job and had a focus on student and teacher success.

Back to School Sales Tax Holiday Announced for 2011!Great news for families shopping for school supplies and uniforms this year!

Beginning at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, August 6, and ending at 11:59 p.m. on

Sunday, August 7, the State of Arkansas will hold its sales tax holiday allowing

shoppers the opportunity to purchase certain School Supplies, School Art Supplies,

School Instructional Materials, and clothing free of state and local sales or use tax.

All retailers are required to participate and may not charge tax on items that are

legally tax-exempt during the Sales Tax Holiday.

During grade school, kids start getting homework

for the first time to reinforce and extend classroom

learning and help them practice important study skills.

By doing homework, kids learn how to: read

and follow directions independently; manage

and budget time (for long-term assignments like

book reports); complete work neatly and to the

best of their ability; It also helps them develop a

sense of responsibility, pride in a job well done,

and a work ethic that will benefit them well

beyond the classroom.

Parents can give kids lots of homework help,

primarily by making homework a priority and

helping them develop good study habits.

ESTABliSH A rouTinE. Send the message

that schoolwork is a top priority with ground rules

like setting a regular time and place each day for

homework to be done. And make it clear that

there’s no TV, phone calls, video game-playing, etc.,

until homework is done and checked.

STrATEgizE for HomEwork SESSionS. Teach kids to take stock of how

much homework there is and what it involves so

they can create a strategy that fits their workloads

and temperaments. By helping them approach

homework with a strategy when they’re young,

you’ll teach your kids to do that independently

later. Allow them to take a break if needed, then

guide them back to the homework with fresh

focus and energy.

inSTill orgAnizATion SkillS. No

one is born with great organizational skills

— they’re learned and practiced over time.

Most kids first encounter multiple teachers and

classrooms in middle school, when organization

becomes a key to succeeding. Teach your child

how to use a calendar or personal planner to

help get organized.

Apply ScHool To THE “rEAl world.” Talk about how what they’re learning

now applies outside the classroom, such as the

importance of meeting deadlines — just like adults

in the work world — or how the topics in history

class relate to what’s happening in today’s news.

HomEwork proBlEmSEspecially as kids get older, homework can really

start to add up and become harder to manage.

These strategies can help:

BE THErE. You don’t have to hover at

homework time, but be around in case you’re

needed. If your son is frazzled by geometry

problems he’s been trying to solve for hours, for

instance, suggest he take a break, maybe by

shooting some hoops with you. A fresh mind may

be all he needed, but when it’s time to return to

homework, ask how you can help.

BE in ToucH wiTH TEAcHErS. Keep in

good contact with the teachers throughout the

school year to stay aware of your child’s progress,

especially if your child is struggling. Don’t miss

parent-teacher conferences and maintain an

ongoing dialogue. Teachers can tell you what

happens in the classroom and how to help your

child succeed. You can also ask to be kept in the

loop about quizzes, tests, and projects.

don’T forgET THE STudy SkillS. Study skills often aren’t stressed in schools. When

you’re helping your child study for a test, suggest

some effective study strategies, such as using

flashcards, or taking notes and underlining while

reading.

EncourAgE kidS To rEAcH ouT. Most

teachers are available for extra help before or after

school, and also might be able to recommend

other resources. So encourage kids to ask for help,

if needed, but remember that in school kids are

rewarded for knowing the right answers, and no

one likes to stand out by saying that they don’t

have them. Praise your kids for their hard work

and effort.

wHEn kidS STrugglE wiTH HomEwork Consistent complaints about

homework or ongoing struggles with assignments

could indicate a problem. In some cases, kids

simply need to learn and practice better study

habits. Be sure your kids are writing down

assignments correctly and encourage them to

keep a daily homework notebook, which can

help both kids and parents know exactly what

assignments are due and when. If a particular

assignment is giving your child more trouble than

others, send a note to the teacher pointing out the

difficulties. But when a kid consistently has a hard

time understanding or completing homework,

there may be broader issues, such as learning

disabilities, ADHD, or vision or hearing difficulties

that may be interfering with academic progress.

By reviewing homework with your child and

talking to your child’s teacher, you can identify any

learning problems and tackle them early on.

lAying THE foundATion The key to truly

helping kids with homework is to know when

to step in. Make sure your kids know that you’re

available if there’s a snag, but that it’s important

to work independently. Encourage effort and

determination — not just the grades they get.

Be a good example by showing your own love

of learning. While your child does homework,

do your own — read books, magazines, and

newspapers; write letters, lists, and emails; use

math skills to calculate expenses or balance the

checkbook. By showing that learning remains

important — even fun — once school’s over,

you’ll help your kids understand that building

knowledge is something to enjoy throughout life.

Federal Student Aid, an office of the U.S. Department of Education, ensures that

all eligible individuals can benefit from federally funded financial assistance for

education beyond high school.

KUDOS!Doug Reed Named NAIS Teacher of the FuturePulaski Academy Upper School Physics teacher Doug Reed has been selected by

the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) to be part of the 2011-2012

Teachers of the Future program. The NAIS Teachers of the Future are selected from

a large pool of nominees who inspire academic excellence in students, and who

serve as opinion leaders among their colleagues and peers. The Teachers of the

Future are also chosen for their expertise in particular areas— environmentalism,

globalism, technology, and equity and justice—which NAIS believes are hallmarks

of a high-quality education for the 21st Century.

As one of only 25 teachers nationwide chosen for the program, Reed will lead

an online discussion forum designed to share innovative ideas and teaching

techniques, and he will create a demonstration video to inspire others.

Reed is involved in Physics education research through the College Ready Program

at University of Arkansas in Fayetteville. He is recipient of the Stephens Award, the

Meyer Endowed Chair, named “Distinguished Teacher” by 2011 U.S. Presidential

Scholar and PA graduate Eric Zheng, and has been chosen to participate in the

AAPT Physics Teaching Resource Agent Program.

Reed has taught Physics classes at PA for 18 years, including AP Physics B, AP Physics

C, and Pre-AP Physics.

Shults Named Principal of the YearSue Shults, principal of Benton Middle School, was named Arkansas Middle Level

Principal of the Year by the Arkansas Association of Educational Administrators.

The award was presented to Mrs. Shults by Dr. Richard Abernathy, Executive

Director of AAEA, during an assembly with BMS staff, district administrators, and

her family present.

Little Rock Central ranked as top high schoolIn this year’s High School Challenge by the Washington Post, Little Rock Central

High School ranked 123 among more than 1900 public high schools nationwide.

Central’s ranking, like the other high schools in the challenge, was determined by

dividing the number of Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate or other

college-level tests the school gave in 2010 by the number of graduating seniors.

Congratulations to Little Rock Central High School on this recognition!

The Kissing Hand

Chester Raccoon doesn’t want to go to school—he wants to stay

home with his mother. She assures him that he’ll love school—with

its promise of new friends, new toys, and new books. Even better,

she has a special secret that’s been in the family for years—the

Kissing Hand. This secret, she tells him, will make school seem as

cozy as home. She takes her son’s hand, spreads his tiny fingers into

a fan and kisses his palm—smack dab in the middle: “Chester felt

his mother’s kiss rush from his hand, up his arm, and into his heart.”

Whenever he feels lonely at school, all he has to do is press his

hand to his cheek to feel the warmth of his mother’s kiss. Chester is

so pleased with his Kissing Hand that he—in a genuinely touching

moment—gives his mom a Kissing Hand, too, to comfort her when

he is away. Audrey Penn’s The Kissing Hand, published by

the Child Welfare League of America, is

rough but endearing raccoon

illustrations are as satisfying

and soothing for anxious

children as the simple story.

Zoo BaBies!The Little Rock Zoo is proud to announce some new members of their animal

families! The zoo’s queen naked mole rat recently gave birth to four tiny babies,

who are now old enough to be on display. Naked mole rats, much like ants, live

in colonies which are headed by a queen. The queen is the only female allowed

to breed, and carefully selects her mate from the males in her colony. If any other

females attempt to breed, they are killed by the queen. The non-breeding mole rats

fulfill the roles of workers in the colony, much like ants or bees. Naked mole rats are

native to East Africa, primarily southern Ethiopia, and have the distinction of being

the longest living rodent. They have tiny, almost invisible eyes and very poor vision.

They also are quite hairless and have large protruding teeth, which makes them both

terrifying and cute at the same time.

The zoo is also home to a new litter of five bush dog pups. Bush dogs are closely

related to mane wolves and are found in the wild in Central and South America.

These animals are downright adorable; they look like small bears with chunky dog

bodies and fluffy tails. They also have webbed feet for efficient swimming. Bush

dogs generally live in packs of 10-12 individuals and live in hollow logs and burrows

for shelter. The bush dogs at the Little Rock Zoo are located near the bears, so be

sure and stop by and say hello to the new babies!

Directions:

Start out by printing your child’s name in a large font, cutting out the

letters, and tracing them onto the fabric and neatly cutting them out

of the printed fabric. I find that it’s easier to use a simple font with no

decorative flourishes to allow for ease of tracing. I also used polka dots

to add some additional color – for these dots I just traced small round

objects such as a candle or a pencil cup. Affix letters and other shapes

with fabric glue (or stitch them on with a machine for a long-lasting

keepsake.) Place pillow inside case and prepare for sweet dreams!
