evil spirits who prowl about the world seeking the ruin of souls.

Blessed Advent to you all! 2nd Sunday of Advent
Luke 3:1-6
Today we continue the "joyful expecta-
tion" of the birth of Christ in history,
the present, and the future. Today we
hear the words of John the Baptist call-
ing people of his time to repentance.
Now, this baptism that John was calling
people to is not the same baptism that
we Christians celebrate. However,
John's baptism is at the root of our
Christian baptism. John's baptism had its roots in the
"oblation washing" of the Jewish people before undertak-
ing anything of great importance.
Christian baptism is a sacrament to wash away original sin
so as to enter sinless into the Christian community. It is the
one sacrament that is celebrated by all Christians, even
those Christians who are not in communion with Rome.
Johns enjoins us to "prepare the way of the Lord." His call
is to be taken in the widest sense. This preparation is a per-
sonal preparation, and is also a communal preparation. We
are called to make sure we are ready to meet the Lord, and
this means that we need to make a difference in the world
to make it better, to make it more peaceful, and to make it
more just. We are called to protect each other's dignity and
share of our abundance with others so that each may live a
life that is centered on helping others.
Prepare the way!
PRAYER FOR VOCATIONS
God of Love, You show your favor for us and grace us
through baptism. Bless us with the courage to carry out the
mission of Jesus. Grant us open and generous hearts to see
the needs of others and to respond with compassion. May the
Church be blest with women and men who are dedicated to
You through marriage, the single life, the diaconate,
priesthood, and the consecrated life.
It is in Christ and through Christ that we offer ourselves to
You now and forever.
Amen.

During Holy Mass today, I was united in a particular way
with God and His Immaculate Mother. The humility and
love of the Immaculate Virgin penetrated my soul. The more
I imitate the Mother of God, the more deeply I get to know
God. Oh, what infinite longing envelops my soul! Jesus, how
can You still leave me in this exile? I am dying of longing
for You. Every touch of my soul by You wounds me im-
mensely. Love and suffering go together; yet I would not
exchange this pain caused by You for any treasure, because
it is the pain of incomprehensible delights, and these wounds
of the soul are inflicted by a loving hand.
Christ Caring for People through People
That’s the motto of Stephen Ministry.
The Stephen Minister’s role is to bring
God’s love into the lives of people who
are going through a difficult time or expe-
riencing a crisis. What do Stephen Minis-
ters do? They listen, care, support, en-
courage, and pray with and for a person
who is hurting. And in the midst of this
confidential, one-to-one, caring relationship, God’s healing love
comes pouring through.
As we prepare for the upcoming Holy Year of Mercy, let us re-
member just how merciful God has been to us and strive to show
that same mercy and compassion to one another.
If someone you know is facing a crisis—large or small—and
could benefit from the caring presence of a Stephen Minister,
talk to one of our Stephen Leaders:
Jerry Krimbill, 392-0602 or Pam Hughes, 394-5723
or email Pam at [email protected] today.
Our Stephen Ministers are ready to care for you!
Holy Trinity Prayer Shawl Ministry

come. This is a wonderful way to show God’s love and heal-
ing powers and meet some other wonderful people in this
ministry.

Cancer Support Group
Impressions:
Next meeting isThursday evening, January 28, 2016,
7:00 - 8:30 p.m.
Faith Formation Center, 2nd floor conference room.
We want to thank all the parish staff for their continuous support of this ministry, especially Gloria Barretto
who makes sure these Impressions articles are published on time, every time.
The Cancer Support Group is a volunteer, self-help ministry whose goal is to provide comfort and support to
anyone touched by cancer, namely patients, caregivers, family and friends to include survivors whether short or
long term. All non-parishioners are welcome. Meetings begin and end with short prayers. Introductions all
around begin the process of sharing. Participation is voluntary. First time visitors will find that almost everyone
who has attended a prior meeting shares their cancer experience/journey. There is no expectation or pressure to
introduce oneself or share any personal experience. A core of 'regulars' helps the process along. Generally, peo-
ple with cancer can speak about it freely. While experiencing similar events in our lives, cancer is personal. Our
primary caregivers take the journey with us but also have their own journey to travel. Often more difficult than
that of the patient. We learn from each other. We help each other; friendships form; we share goals and hope. I
marvel at the strength and faith of everyone who attends. You will too. Please come. Being touched by cancer
does not have to be a lonesome journey. As difficult as it might be, you will be amazed at how many will travel
with you and make you smile. Bring a friend or family member with you. Remember, they are touched by can-
cer too. Because we are a people who believe and belong - the Kingdom of God is where you are; you will
come away better than when you arrived.
Meetings are held on the fourth Thursday of January through October, the 3rd Thursday of Novembers, no
meeting in December.
The Holy Trinity Cancer Support Group is listed on the American Cancer Society's website (acs.com. See Con-
nections page). The parish webmaster transfers these Impressions articles to the parish webpage for your re-
view. See bulletins for the following month's meeting time.

Reflection ~ The Force
Yes, it pains me to admit, I am old enough to remember when
the first Star Wars movie came out--plenty old enough. (I was a
junior in high school.) One of he most memorable scenes in the
movie was when young Luke Skywalker was being trained to
use a powerful weapon, the lightsaber. He kept missing the tar-
gets that were flying at him. Becoming very frustrated, he asks
his instructor, Obi Wan Kenobi, for help. The wise Obi Wan
tells Luke to stop relying on his own skill and to "trust the
Force." The Force is this energy field that can be tapped into to
perfor m feats far beyond one's ability. With much hesitation,
and a few failures, Luke finally is able to let go of his desire to
control the lightsaber and allow the Force to aid him. After that,
he never misses another target and becomes an expert with the
lightsaber.
The above scene is a great illustration for how God works in our
lives. When we don't trust God, we are limited to our own earth-
ly abilities. If we allow ourselves to trust Him, we create a space
that allows Him to work through us to accomplish great things;
things we could never have done on our own. Like Luke, our
first step is to let go of our own desire to control and trust God.
For many of us who have found our security and surety in being
in control, it can be a difficult step to take. However, if we are
ever to reach our full purpose and potential, we must learn to t
rust. When we do, we become a channel for God's incredible
power and love and nothing can stop us.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
on your own intelligence do not rely;
In all your ways be mindful of him,
and he will make straight your paths. - Proverbs 3:5-6

Holy Trinity Altar Guild Needs More Handmaids of the Lord
The Altar Guild needs more parishioners to ensure that the Holy Trinity masses and the Blessed Sacrament Chapel are
“pleasing in His eyes”. Help is needed and the Altar Guild may be your ministry. The Altar Guild cleans and washes
over 90 communion linens every week. We ensure the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, the main Altar, the offertory table,
and the credence table is dressed with clean linens. Help washing the communion vessels and ensuring the Sanctuary candle is full dur-
ing adoration times are other duties. We have also added the duties of decorating the Church and Altar for liturgical seasons and special
Masses. “Do not be afraid”

DECEMBER 12, 2015
Our Lady of Guadalupe
"Blessed are you who believed that what was spoken to you by the
Lord would be fulfilled." Elizabeth uttered these words to Mary in
recognition of her great faith. Indeed, what profound faith it must
have taken for Mary to believe the words of the Angel Gabriel!
The miracle that took place in Mary's body when the Christ was
conceived in her would have been easy enough to believe once the
pregnancy was starting to show. But before that concrete
"evidence" was present, what a tremendous thing it was to be
asked to accept. That Mary could conceive in her womb through
the power of the Holy Spirit--outside of all human and scientific
explanation--only a person of extraordinary faith could accept
such a thing.
Perhaps this is why Mary chose to speak to St. Juan Diego. He too
was a person of extraordinary faith. Like her, he was asked to ac-
cept something that defied human and scientific explanation when
he listened to this lady from heaven up on the hill of Tepeyac. And
like Mary, this simple peasant man chose to believe. He didn't
dismiss his vision as a hallucination or the result of mental illness.
Instead, he took Mary at her word and did what she asked him to
do, even when other people thought he was delusional or dishon-
est.
In our day and age, just being Christian often takes an act of ex-
traordinary faith. So many people have become skeptical of any-
thing that can't be proven by science, that accepting Christ's divin-
ity can be a challenge. When we are tempted to question or doubt
the truths of faith, may we turn to the powerful intercession of Our
Lady of Guadalupe and St. Juan Diego, models of faith.
2nd Sunday of Advent
"Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths." Today's
Gospel reading references an ancient text from the Old Testament
Book of Isaiah. There, a prophecy was made that John the Baptist
would fulfill many years later; John is the "voice of one crying out
in the desert." And the message that John's voice proclaimed, in
preparation for the coming of the Messiah, was a message of re-
pentance.
The passage from Isaiah gives us some clues into what this repent-
ance is supposed to do. It is meant to change us into people who
can properly welcome the Lord when he comes. Using the poetic
image of a path, the text describes the kind of path that is suitable
for the Lord. He shouldn't have to navigate valleys, scale moun-
tains, wind around twists and turns on the road, or traverse rough,
difficult terrain. Instead, he should be able to move easily on
smooth ground. Residents preparing to welcome an honored guest
ought to do what they can to make the journey pleasant. The analo-
gy relates to our souls.
As we prepare to welcome the Lord this Advent season, we should
make the "path" of our souls level, straight, and smooth. We should
"fill" the valleys of laziness or despair with diligence and joy. The
mountains of pride and greed should be made low with humility
and generosity. The winding roads of dishonesty and manipulation
"shall be made straight" with commitment to the truth. And the
rough ways of our selfishness and stubbornness should be made
smooth through charity and docility to the Holy Spirit. When we
live our faith with sincerity and devotion, our souls are trans-
formed. This Advent, may our souls become a pleasant path for
Christ.

Everyday Stewardship
Even though some people seem to live graced lives with little struggle, the truth is we all have struggles in life. Financial problems,
health issues, emotions of fear and inadequacy, and even twists of fate are part of the human condition. The fact is that we are imperfect
beings living in an imperfect world.
But there is the One that came into the world to fill the valleys and lower the mountains. He makes winding roads straight and rough
roads smooth again. In fact, he makes new again that which was created at the beginning of time but then fell into disarray due to our
sin. He is Jesus, and he not only makes all things new, he provides glimpses of perfection in our imperfect world.
With all that we have been given as gift, the greatest gift was the Incarnation, God made man. Through the birth of a baby, our reality
was altered in this world forever, and a hope for life eternal with our God was possible. And now, we are called to spend our days as co-
creators with God, cultivating all that has been given to us so the good work begun in us may be drawn near to completion. Paul's words
to the Philippians is for all good stewards: "And this is my prayer: that your love may increase ever more and more in knowledge and
every kind of perception, to discern what is of value, so that you may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of
righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God." We are imperfect beings in an imperfect world, but the
One who makes all things perfect is doing great things in us.
