The Shriek NOVEMBER 2016 Greetings Nobles and Ladies The fourth quarter of 2016 is here. We are quickly approaching the year’s end. The end of the year is highlighted by the 2017 budget being presented at the November business meeting. The temple elections are at the temple business meeting in December. This is all topped off with the famous end of the year party where the motorcycle raffle will be drawn and announced. There are numerous temple parties Kids Christmas party and more. The holiday season brings all of the Christmas parties that seem to go on continuously sponsored by the units and clubs. We understand we all have numerous family commitments we must attend. Please budget your time to attend as many of the temple functions that I have just mentioned. It has been an honor to serve as Potentate thus far in 2016. It has been a further honor to serve as the Circus Director for Circus 2017. Most of the preplanning for Circus 2017 is done during the Shrine calendar 2016 as most of you know. I thought I would include the following on circus 2017 in my November letter from the potentate 2016/ Circus Director 2017. Please remember your $40.00 Mom and Dad’s donations. As we did in 2015 we are asking the entire nobility to make this effort possible. The Mom and Dad’s effort enhances and increases the total attendance. We all know that Circus overall is a year to year thing. Total attendance must increase. It is up to all of us to help and see to it that we get to the l00th year of our Shrine Circus Annual Performances in 2021. I want to thank the circus committee for all they have done thus far, we have implemented a lot of changes that were necessary to continuing on with the Syrian Shrine Circus Business. We still have a long way to go until February 3,4, and 5,2017. Lady Kathy and Myself thank you all and will always remember The 2016 Divan, Trustees, and Nobility. Temple Officers Must Be Selected WiselyDecember 5, 2016

(Keep in Mind That “All” Officer Positions Are Up for Election)

When the members of a Syrian Shriners elect a Noble to the Office of Oriental Guide, they are virtuallystarting that Noble through the Divan Line on the assumption that he will prove qualified for and worthy ofadvancement to the high office of Illustrious Potentate.

Hence it is quite evident that nomination for Oriental Guide should be based upon thorough and accurateevaluation of character, ability, motivation, interest and experience. A Noble can be a great fellow, hardworker; and loyal Shriner and yet lack the basic qualifications which make for a good Potentate. Unless aNoble is fully qualified for the job, he is unfair both to himself and to Syrian Shrine in seeking the Office orin permitting his fellow Nobles to support and promote his candidacy.

Besides the election of an Oriental Guide, the valuable position(s) of Trustee, must be chosen from amongthe membership to be custodians of the temple property and serve as signatories, with the Divan in the governingof Syrian Shrine.

The following checklist may prove helpful in evaluating potential candidates for the Officers of Syrian Shrine

However, no thinking man would be so naïve or presumptuous as to believe that any one Noble could possiblyembody all of the virtues, talents and qualifications which are set forth in this check list.

LeadershipExecutive ability

Community standing and influenceFinancial security

Business SenseEnergy and vitality

Capable of building good public relationsGood habits and moral character

Well-PoisedGood HealthDiplomacy

Stage PresenceCompetent Organizer and Promoter

Possess Social Graces

Let’s be fair, honest and wise in the all-important matter of electing to office only men who are eminentlyqualified for the job. We all know that with honor comes responsibility. While there is high honor associatedwith being a Divan/Trustee Officer, the ensuing responsibilities entail a lot of time and energy consumingwork. Eternal vigilance must be wisely and thoughtfully exercised by the voting membership in order toperpetuate a high caliber of leadership. Recorder-Gary

Antique CaravanAs we bring this parade season to a close, we are still working inevery way we can to raise awareness of our fraternity, and our missionof being part of helping children overcome significant medicalchallenges and go on to have happy, fulfilled lives. This givesCaravan members great pride and satisfaction. As many have said, our fraternity was founded on the Masonic principles of brotherlylove, relief and truth, with the addition of an element of fun, whichin many ways has become fun with a purpose. These concepts andvalues guide the Antique Caravan’s every effort, and the basics ofall we do. If you are looking to join a motorized unit, with greatparticipation in parades and temple activities, join the AntiqueCaravan. We have cars available, “free”, pick yours up now, andhave all winter to get it ready for the 2017 parade season. Contactany Caravan member…GaryBona Ct #8Hello from Bona Ct #8. It seems fall has descended on us. Thetrees are in glorious color, the temperature is cooler and you cansmell the smoke from wood fires. The parade season is over andnow we are heading to the Holidays. Our Lotus Social was lot offun. We made some money, made new friends, and had a very goodtime. We worked the Trunk or Treat for the Nobles on October 28th.That was lots of fun! Our ladies are recovering from a wonderfulGreat Lakes Unit Meet in Frankenmuth, Michigan. Our Ladies willbe having a Thanksgiving Dinner before our November meeting onNovember 21st. This is the start of our holiday. Our annual cookieexchange is coming up on December 3rd. To Illustrious Art for working so hard tobuild up our Temple members, to Bruce and Art for bringing thehospital back to us. To Gary Wainscott for calling members, andgetting some of Shrine family to come home. To Carl Idler for histireless work at the temple. To Gary Caudill that lives at our Temple, working 60 hours per week. Our Syrian Shrine Clown unit! Eachand every time I put out a call to clowns to show Up Someone did! Some of the Super Hard Working Individual’s this past year are Flip,Rocky, Hot Rod, Rufous, Knucklehead, and Chili. Which leads meto a story, as most of you know I have slowed down due to my beatup body and money has been slow as well. This past September Iwas to go to Indianapolis to take office as GLSCUA President. Butmoney was real short at the Barrels house, and in known to me themembers of our Clown unit past the hat and got the funds to let mego sleep in a hotel (not my truck) And eat and be able to bring up mywife and son Thank you all. Last month I made note of some ofyears of Service. There are many types of Clowns Active, non-Active,Neophytes, Retired, and the ones that just get missed. So if I missedany one let me know. One that I did miss was Bubs! (Ken Wilzbach)Retired Fire Fighter and his Last Zola, Bubs has been a clown from1996. Thank you God for our friends and family. Barrels Da Clown.FezNobles, our parade season has passed us byending with the Fastique’s Parade the club thatsupported us strongly through the past yearsconcentrating on our Burns Hospital with verylarge donat ions . Our parades where wel lattended on most occasions but not as strongas years past. This is the largest exposure wehave as Syrian Shriners to show the GreaterCincinnati area who we are. You could tell theseason change is here as the temperatures are telling us that winteris around the corner with natures beauty all around us the treeschanging colors and before long will be covering our yards. Still

some might hate this time of year yet look forward to the footballseason which brings me to the story of the coach who put togetherthe perfect team for Baltimore Ravens. The only thing that wasmissing was a good quarterback. He scouted the world but could notfind a ringer who could ensure a Super Bowl win. One day whilewatching CNN he saw a war-zone scene in Palestine. He spotted ayoung Israeli soldier with truly incredible arm. he threw a handgrenade 75 yards away, right into a chimney KA-BOOM! Then hethrew another at a passing car going 90 MPH BULLSEYE! “I’ve gotto get this guy!” he said to himself “He has the perfect arm!” So hebrings him to the States and teaches him the great game of AmericanFootball. And the Ravens go on to win the Super Bowl and is hailedas the great hero of football. The Coach asks him what he can do forhim and all this young man wanted was to call his Mother. He did“Mom” he says “I just won the Super Bowl.” Moms answer “I don’twant to talk to you! You are not my son!” “I don’t think youunderstand Mother.” The young man pleads. “I won the greatestsporting event in the World!” “No let me tell you!” his mother resorts.“At this very moment, there are gunshots al l around us. Theneighborhood is a pile of rubble. Your two brothers were beaten withinan inch of their lives last week, and I keep your sister in the houseso she doesn’t get raped!” The old lady pauses, then tearfully says “Iwill never forgive you for making us move to Baltimore!”Asalamu Aleikum Sam MattarShrine Club HamilitonGreeting Nobles and Friends, the next HSC meeting is scheduled forNovember 1st, dinner at 6pm, meeting to follow. Oriental BandDan Depenbrock, Director…Greetings Nobles and Shrine Friends, TheOriental Band followed up our Summer break by re-starting our weeklyPractices/Meetings in September as well as participating in the annualHarvest Home Parade and the Aurora Farmers Fair Parade which is toutedas the oldest Fair in Indiana. Following the Parade at Aurora, the OrientalBand along with several other Syrian Nobles went out to the SoutheasternIndiana Shrine Club where we treated to a Chicken Dinner and somegreat Hospitality. It was really nice to share the day with our IndianaBrothers and Sisters. Following the afternoon activities at the ShrineClub, several members of the O.B. headed further West in Indiana toBrowning’s Campground where some spent the night and then made aquick turn around and headed back East the next morning to be atOwensville for the Annual Pumpkin Run Car Show which is sponsoredby the Fastique’s Car Club who generously give $ annually to our ShrineHospitals. Would like to remind all Bandsmen and Syrian Nobles thatthe annual Paper Crusade/Tabloid Days where we collect $ for ourHospitals is coming up this month on Friday October 14th and SaturdayOctober 15th. The O.B. will be collecting at the Bridgewater Falls Walmartwhere the O.B.’s Mike Jodrey is the Store Mgr. Let’s have a good turnoutof Units, Clubs and Individuals for this Hospital Fundraising effort. Untilnext month, take care! John Longsworth O.B. ScribeNorthern Kentucky Shrine ClubWelcome back to NKSC! Our September meeting was well attended. We would like to extend our deepest sympathies to Noble Ed Vardimanon the passing of Lady Verna. Our thoughts and prayer are with you andyour family. Syrian Shrine has a new lodge ambassador program in place. There are two purposes of this program. One is to open avenues ofcommunication between the Shrine and the Blue Lodge and the other isto recruit new Shriners. All an ambassador has to do is just to talk aboutShrine activities at their lodge. This is not a hard job, but it is a mostimportant one. NKSC is poised to become a major contributor in thedevelopment of new Shriners in the Northern KY area. Thank you to allof our members that have taken on this responsibility. The Northern KYShrine Club meets at Barleycorn’s in Cold Spring on the fourth Thursdayof each month. The meeting begins at 7:00 PM. Come early and bringyour family. Have dinner and enjoy good fellowship. Al Tucker, SecretaryShrine GolfGreetings Nobles and friends. We finished our 2016 schedule onSeptember 26th, and even though the Thursdays rains had hampered us anumber of times, we still had a chance to get many rounds played. Thegolf course, Glenview, was in great shape this year and we expect to bethere again next season. Our ‘Banquet” was held October 6th at JohnDsuban’s company facility for the event. A special thanks to John. Wethank all who played this year and look forward to next year, hoping tocontinue this Syrian Shrine tradition. All Nobles who would like to getnine holes of golf in each week on a great golf course please considerjoining us. See you next year1 Dick ManifoldWest Side Shrine ClubThe seasonal change is natures beauty the Fall is here and November 8,Election Day is when we get together again at the Nathaniel Greene Lodgein Green Township. November is when we need to elect our new officersfor the year 2017 and we also need to know if someone is stepping up tothe plate so we can pay our rent money to the Lodge knowing we will beback. So many Club, Units and Organizations have dispersed, the OakHills Kiwanis of which I was a member closed its doors having no onewilling to step up to the plate. Please let’s not let this happen to us. Aquote from the old days by Theodore Roosevelt is appropriate at thistime. “In any moment of decision the best thing you can do is the rightthing. The next best thing is the wrong thing. But the worst thing youcan do is Nothing.” In closing I would like to leave the men withsomething to think about. One lazy Sunday morning an older wife andHusband sitting t the breakfast he proceeded to tell her to sell all hisstuff immediately after he dies. She asked why. His answer was “I figurea woman as fine as yourself would eventually remarry and I don’t wantanother butt-hole using my stuff.” She looked at him intently and said“What makes you think i’d marry another butt-hole?” Your Scribe Andacting president Sam Mattar

Syrian Noble Henry F FillmoreHe was best known for writing ragtime tunes featuring the trombone which used the glissando, orsmear, to humorous effect. He also wrote a number of excellent marches which are still playedfrequently across America and all over the world. Most high school and college musicians have notrouble recognizing his music, but few know about the composer who wrote it. Henry Fillmore Jr.was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, as the eldest of five children. In his youth he mastered piano, guitar, violin, flute, and slide trombone. He kept his trombone activities a secret at first, as his circumspectreligious father James Henry Fillmore (1849–1936)—a composer of gospel songs, often incollaboration with Jessie Brown Pounds, believed it an uncouth and sinful instrument. Henry’smother secretly bought a used trombone for him and obscured, from Henry’s father, the son’slearning to play the instrument. Fillmore entered the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music in 1901.After graduating he traveled the United States as a circus bandmaster with his wife, an exoticdancer named Mabel May Jones. They were married in St Louis. In the 1920s Fillmore was back in Cincinnati conducting the Syrian Shrine Temple Band, whichhe turned into one of the best marching bands in the country. In 1938 Fillmore, after beingadvised by a physician that he had just a few months to live, retired to Miami. Florida. He went on,however, to prove the physician wrong. So Fillmore kept an active schedule rehearsing high schoolbands in Florida and composing marches. Henry Fillmore Band Hall, the rehearsal hall for manyof the University of Miami’s performing groups, acquired its name as a tribute to Fillmore’s workin the band genre. His march Orange Bowl was written for Miami’s Band of the Hour. UncleHenry, as Fillmore was affectionately known to the members of the Band of the hour, also wrotethe University of Miami’s current official fight song – “Miami U How-De-Doo”. His arrangementof the ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ is the traditional arrangement performed by the Florida StateUniversity Marching Chiefs. His march Men of Florida was composed for the bands at the Universityof Florida. He was given an Honorary Doctorate of Music by the University of Miami in 1956 inrecognition of his career. Fillmore lived out the rest of his days in South Florida. Perhaps no otherindividual has had his level of influence on the music of the private University of Miami and thepublic University of Florida and Florida State University.

2017 Circus Committee:Numerous members of the circus committee have made their donations to the Mom and Dad’s effort. Wesincerely thank those that have and hope that the others will send theirs in. Circus committee memberswork extremely hard all year long to put the circus on for the following year. There are several fundraisingefforts that we have pushed extremely hard the past couple years to compliment the shrine circus. Oneliners, Mom and dad’s donations, and Activity Book Sales and Pre Sale Ticket Sales or Tickets purchasedmore than 30 days prior to show time. The revenue from these efforts limit the risk of taking on a hugeinvestment to put on the circus year after year. Please take these efforts seriously. Purchase your ticketsearly - Enjoy better seating by doing so.You will soon receive a Mom and Dad’s flyer in the mail asking for a $40.00 donation or the purchase of$40.00 in tickets to either use or donate back to the Mom and Dad’s efforts.
