FROM: REVD NIGEL DI CASTIGLIONE: How time flies! After a long and hot summer, we are in the season village shows, Harvest festivals and suppers. I am thinking of rotas for January to April! That’s right – it’s the nature of church life these days as resources have to be spread ever more thinly; we have to keep ahead of the calendar to ensure we get the support we need from colleagues to fulfil our regular patterns of ministry. Before then we have Remembrance and, of course, the Christmas season. This will be a particularly important Remembrance Sunday as 2018 marks the 100th anniversary of the formal end to World War 1, and it falls on a Sunday. Remembrance is not just about looking back to wars that occurred before many of us were born. These days recruits to the armed services have to face up to the real prospect they may be called on to go into cauldrons of conflict; many of us were seared by the sight of so many service people bring brought home having been killed in Iraq with sombre parades to honour them as they were driven through Wootton Bassett. The early months of 2019 are likely to be another defining time in the history of our nation as the Brexit deadline approaches and we still don’t know on what terms any deal will settle. Sometimes I wish, wouldn’t it be good to stop the clock and take stock for a few weeks before we hurtle into the next onslaught of busyness? It isn’t about to happen. As a Christian, however, I know God invites me to be still before Him (Psalm 46v10); and Jesus clearly had a discipline of getting alone to pray on a regular basis. He doesn’t stop the clock ticking but allows us to recalibrate, be refreshed and refocused in his presence, in readiness for all we have to face or deal with. This is one of the benefits the church adds to many villages I serve and perhaps close to where you live: in Croxton, Eltisley and Graveley the churches are open every day or on most days, and in Yelling getting hold of a keyholder is very straightforward – so that you (with me) can find space away from other demands to have time with God. Tell yourself you are welcome, because you are! Make a visit and in your prayers include one from Samuel who, having been pointed in the right direction said to God: “Speak for your servant is listening.” You won’t be ignored or disappointed! They ventured over to Thriplow and secured an all time highest Yelling score of 313 runs. Tume celebrated his 100th game for the club by scoring 103 runs, Dominic swiftly racked up 84 and the wickets were shared out between Will, Jack, Jordan, Steve, Dom and Tume. The club are sincerely grateful for all the support over the season from the groundsmen, tea ladies and dedicated supporters. The 100 club winners to date are Jack Crawley, Lynne Johnson, Lou Tack, Harrison Johnson, Stacey Francis, Kevin Youngs, Catherine Dickie, Steve Leonard, Andrea Paula and Sam Johnson. The main prize will be drawn at the Club Dinner on Friday 26 October.

Cambs Beds Rail Route (CBRR): One of the current proposals for the East West rail link from Oxford to Cambridge comes very close to the villages of Waresley and Great Gransden, passing through Waresley Park, with no proposed rail link to St Neots. The voluntary consortium CBRR CamBed RailRoad Think Tank is trying to bring some sense to the various rail options and is proposing a route that will serve the proposed developments of St Neots East, Wintringham, Cambourne and Northstowe rather than cutting through open countryside without any stations. None of the existing official suggestions are of any benefit to the local area or to the newly planned large centres of population. CBRR propose a route that comes north of WIntringham and follows the line of the A428 with stations at Cambourne and Northstowe; the feasibility of this route has already been confirmed by engineers. The current timescale is that the official choice of preferred routes will be out for public consultation in the last quarter of 2018. If you agree that links to residential developments are an important part of this new infrastructure project then please make your views known to your MP to include CBRR’s proposal as one of the preferred route options for public consultation. HOLY CROSS CHURCH YELLING A CELEBRATION OF REMEMBRANCE AND THANKSGIVING Sunday 11th November at 10.30am Our Remembrance Service this year will be marking the centenary of the 1918 Armistice.

As part of a nationwide 2018 Armistice Project - ‘There But Not There’ - initiated by the charity Remembered, we are pleased to have been awarded seven silhouettes by the Armed Forces Covenant Fund Trust that we shall be displaying in the church to represent the men of Yelling who died in two World Wars. We hope as many people as possible will join us, both from our own parish and from any other villages not holding their own Services of Remembrance on 11th November. Serving and former members of the Armed Forces and their families will be particularly welcome, as will the younger members of the community.

ELTISLEY ROGER’S RAMBLINGS My thanks go to the one resident who spotted last month’s deliberate mistake – yes the August Ramblings were printed again. Anyway, it illustrated the size of my audience and sadly the literary gem that I had prepared for you remains unseen! We held our PC meeting on 11th September, and amongst the items discussed were the Cambridge Road junction with the A428 – again! - updating the village green byelaws, repairs to the A428 carriageway, and the St. Neots Road bridleway. It was reported that the village sign has been re-erected, and our thanks go to those who helped, particularly Richard Sharp and Geoff Woods, and we resolved to purchase new LED lights for the Peace Tree at Christmas. These will be left on the tree and we hope they will last 2-3 years, saving the cost of the hire of the cherry picker twice a season. Following our discussions on the village drainage, the Council decided to write to all residents advising them of their Riperian Rights, and to hold a meeting in The Cade on 24th September at 7.30pm for those identified as requiring maintenance to their properties. The Council are seeking quotations for those areas we are responsible for and are drawing up a drainage map for future reference. The village Christmas Party was discussed and a Village Working Party is scheduled for Saturday, 3rd November at 10.00am, more details next month. We are looking for a winter home for the Cricket sidescreens if anyone can help? The usual financial procedures were completed and, following professional advice, it was resolved to invest the proceeds from the sale of the Village Institute in three ways, with one third remaining in an instant access deposit account, one third to be invested for a three to five year investment time frame, and the remainder for over five years. On planning we rejected the re-submission of an application from the Cambridge Gliding Club for increased flying activities, but approved applications to convert a barn into residential use at 12 Caxton End and tree works at 1 St. Thomas. A busy meeting, and, remember, the full draft minutes are on the village website and the notice board in the bus shelter. The next PC Meeting will be on Tuesday 13th November at 7.30pm in The Cade Pavilion. Hope to see you there. Throughout the year and particularly as the winter months draw in, we begin using our fires, burners and chimneys once again to warm our homes. Follow CAMBRIDGESHIRE FIRE AND RESCUE SERVICE ‘top tips’ below to ensure your home is kept safe and warm all year round. Chimneys and Fires: • Have your chimney swept once a year or more frequently if you burn wood • Avoid burning resinous woods that quickly build up soot • Only burn fuels suitable for your burner (eg.never burn anything other than wood in a

wood burner) • Do not overload the grate/appliance • Do not bank fires too high and remember to let them burn out well before you go to bed • Check the hearth, floor and furnishings near the fire for hot sparks/embers • Do not place objects on or over the mantelpiece which cause you to stand too close to the

fire in order to reach them • Use a fire/spark guard to prevent accidental fires and make sure it has the kite mark or

conforms to British/ European standards • Inspect your chimney-breast, particularly the roof space. Make sure it is sound and

sparks/fumes cannot escape through cracks or broken bricks. Wood/Multi-Fuel Burners: • A qualified and competent engineer should install all wood/multi-fuel burners and boilers –

regular maintenance should be undertaken to prolong the working life of the appliance. Specialist servicing and maintenance will usually be provided by the company you purchase the appliance from but you can also refer to www.solidfuel.co.uk for advice and information

• Ensure correct ventilation is in place when the appliance is in use • Wood burning appliances should only use the right quality wood recommended by the

supplier • Regularly inspect the chimney and flues • Generally wood should be well-seasoned (wood kept dry and stored for around 2 years) • Avoid wet or newly felled wood as this will cause tars/ creosote deposits forming in the

burning appliance and chimney • Using laminated chip boards will leave binding glue deposits • For each slow burning period there should follow a quick burn to dry out unwanted

tar/creosote deposits and to warm up the chimney again • At the end of each burning season and at least once during the season the entire system

should be cooled and thoroughly cleaned to maintain top performance. Most importantly:

• Fit a smoke alarm that carries the kite mark or British Standard Number 5446 and test your alarm weekly by pressing the test button and know the life of your battery.

• Always also install a CO alarm in the room where the burner is installed. Chimney Fires continue to be a common occurrence in home fires in the winter months.

We experience an average of 81 chimney fires a year in Cambridgeshire alone. Whatever fire you have, or fuel you burn, it is vitally important you have your chimney swept to avoid a build-up of ash and soot. Website: www.cambsfire.gov.uk, or call 01480 444500.

The History of Music Hall: Music Halls can be traced back to the taverns and coffee houses of 18th Century London where men met to eat, drink and do business, performers sang songs whilst the audience ate, drank and joined in the singing. These days Music Hall Societies are very few in number, but we are fortunate to have one such society locally who has officially existed for the past 47 years and is still going strong. They have performed each year at The Commemoration Huntingdon but are now 'rehomed ' at The Village Hall in Papworth Everard, which has recently been rebuilt and provides all new facilities. This year their chosen charity is ‘The British Red Cross’ and the show is dedicated to a poignant period in our history during the time of the First and Second World Wars. Comedy plays a large part in each show and audience participation is actively encouraged. So….transport yourselves and your friends back to the days where laughter and banter went hand in hand - sit back and soak up the atmosphere of those bygone days. Ale is plentiful and a Ploughman’s Supper awaits you at the evening performances.
