The Spanish Airport Authority recognized the growing need to expand the current Madrid Barajas Airport to accommodate as much as twice the current terminals' capacity.

Purpose The goal was to build a new terminal that can compete with the other 21st century airports in both architectural quality and effectiveness.

CONCEPTThe building made use of the “wave” roof supported by

“trees”, punctuated by roof lights for

natural lighting, and oversailing the edges for a shadow-played

façade.

Building Description

The building mainly used aluminum roofing with a bamboo ceiling supported by 'Y' shaped steel structures. Centering it, are exposed steelwork colored sunflower yellow gradually changing from red-blue to add brightness and warmth to the overall experience of its users

Design

Considerations

The biggest concern of the design team is the lighting of the multi-level terminal. They used these full-height "canyons" filled with natural light to bring down the light. These also serve as dividers between the departure area, arrival area and aircrafts.

Design ProcessThe Richard Rogers

Partnership team was dedicated to giving the passenger a whole new

airport experience through the new terminal so it had

to be both highly functional and

conceptually outstanding.
