Y ou are on my mind…I am sitting in my study at home, the sun is intent on rapidly setting… and I keep “chair-jump- ing” (moving my desk chair to the left) to keep the sun in my sight. It’s [only] 4:20 in the afternoon. But then it is November… Nov 19th, to be exact. As I write, I keep leaning forward toward the window from my desk, checking the sun’s agenda. I know in my head that the sun sets daily and will rise again the next day but some- thing about sunsets in the late fall make me feel…forlorn. In the summer, on the weekends (and daily on vacation), I not only relish the sunsets, I often plan my whole after- noon/evening around them, usually mak- ing elaborate plans with friends to enjoy and honor the daily sunset with the best viewing spot available paired with appro- priate vittles. Not everyone does this, I’m told. I’ve also heard many a sunset has happened without much notice or fanfare at all, even in the summer “when the livin’ is easy”. So I have asked myself: “Why so much energy and joy around the late summer sunsets and so much desperation and scarcity about sunsets at this time of year?” Well, scientifically, we literally have 50% less light and heat this time of year. Biologically, nature actually needs a rest and fallow time after an ardent, prolific, three-act play. Theologically too, we also might need some time/permission to be mellow or even wallow in the dark- ness. Why? Well without darkness, human- ity might have a hard time believing (and experiencing) that God is with us in our darkness as well as in the joy, sunlight and celebrations. Shorter days also give us a chance to hunker down, to stop running at a frenetic pace, to find comfort in warmth of blankets, cozy dinners, good friends, long naps, hot chocolate, and still- ness. It’s now 17 minutes later. The sun is now down and the afterglow is dull but still apparent. I move my chair further to the east to catch every last moment, of every last sun-drop. The squirrels (of course!) are scrambling like mad. The birds are already MIA and the herd of deer are gathering gently but exponentially for the last forage before the moon tells them it’s time for bed. Nature tells us a lot about how we might function at this time of year if we are will- ing to listen. No plant, tree or animal or mammal (that I am aware of) grows, blooms, produces, reproduces or re-roots constantly. All living things need a fallow time to rest and watch and wait for a new thing. We are now in Advent, a season of waiting and watching and hoping. We are waiting for the days to get longer. We are watching to see what God may do in our lives to bring us more hope, and perhaps more freedom and joy than where we are right now. It may not be what we want or expect, but I guarantee you, whatever God has in store for us, it will be a renewal; better than we could ever ask or imagine. Some of us dread the late fall and winter for its increasingly short days and cold nights and for facing into the holidays which are often a mix of joy and grief. Why not come, wait, watch, hope and experi- ence some of what God has in store at the “Coming of the Light” experience on the Winter Solstice December 21st at 7 PM in our sanctuary. We will are hosting a rich, meaningful and increasingly joyous celebration of the Coming of the Light” and the Coming of the “SON”-light with music and readings and poetry and drama and joy. This is an opportunity to be inspired and moved and part of the light, the hope and the joy as we await the celebration of the Christ-Child, a light that no darkness can ever overcome.
