The Division I Football ChampionshipSubdivision Summit, a unique businessgathering of university presidents, athleticadministrators and other key stakeholders, will be held Jan. 6 in conjunction with the2012 NCAA Division I FootballChampionship Game in Frisco.

The second FCS Summit follows lastyear’s successful gathering of approxi-mately 150 guests in Frisco that led to sub-sequent meetings of FCS presidents, com-missioners and athletic directors, all intenton ensuring the future well-being of theNCAA’s highest level of championshipfootball.

Supported by the NCAA, the 13 Division IFCS conferences, NCAA Football, andNACDA and its affiliated FCS AthleticDirectors’ Association, the FCS Summitfocuses on the important issues related tothe subdivision, including its champi-onship playoff.

“The FCS Summit is quickly becoming akey event for the subdivision,” said KyleKallander, commissioner of the Big SouthConference and current FCS vice presi-dent of the Collegiate CommissionersAssociation. “With the landscape of inter-collegiate athletics rapidly changing, andcritical issues such as championshipexpansion, FCS enhancement, and CEOleadership to discuss, this year’s Summit isa must attend for FCS members.”

FCS presidents, athletic directors and con-ference commissioners from around thecountry, as well as NCAA staff, televisionexecutives and other key football stake-holders are scheduled to attend theSummit. The Summit will feature interac-tive sessions addressing PresidentialPerspectives on the ChampionshipSubdivision and the future of the NCAADivision I Football Championship.

“The first FCS Summit was a great suc-cess, as it re-focused stakeholders on theimportance and future viability of the sub-division,” added Tom Burnett, commis-sioner of the Frisco-based SouthlandConference, “As the first event exceededeveryone’s expectations, it also spurrednational discussion among presidentialleaders, athletic administrators and coach-es.”

The 2011 Summit was followed by theorganization and meetings of an FCS CEOGroup that includes two presidents fromeach of the 13 conferences, and the FCSAthletic Directors Association RoundTable at the 2011 NACDA Convention inOrlando. THE ALOTIAN CLUB TO HOST 2013 WESTERN AMATEUR

The 2013 Western Amateur will be held atThe Alotian Club, one of the nationís pre-mier golf courses, Western GolfAssociation and Alotian Club officialsannounced today.

Opened in 2004, The Alotian Club, inRoland, Ark., is ranked No. 14 on GolfDigest's biennial ranking of "America's 100Greatest Golf Courses." The course wasbuilt by Little Rock businessman WarrenStephens and was identified by Golf Digestas the best new private course in the coun-try in 2005.

ìWeíre very fortunate to be able to bring ourworld-class amateur championship to sucha highly-regarded facility,î said VincePellegrino, vice president of tournamentsfor the Western Golf Association. ìTheAlotian Club has received accolades sincethe day it opened. We expect our field oftop-ranked amateurs will be thrilled to havean opportunity to compete on such a presti-gious course.î

Renowned golf architect Tom Faziodesigned the course, which measures 7,480yards from the championship tees. Thecourse plays 6,780 yards from member teesand 5,385 yards from forward tees. Thecourseís signature trait is elevation change, with the most dramatic coming at the sixthhole with a 100-foot drop from the tee togreen.

For The Alotian Club, hosting the 111thWestern Amateur championship will pro-vide a high-profile platform to showcasethe courseís beauty and challenging designwhile also highlighting the clubís supportof caddies and the WGAís Evans ScholarsFoundation, which grants college scholar-ships to deserving caddies.

ìCaddies are an integral part of the historyand tradition of golf. That's why I wanted acaddie program at The Alotian Club,îStephens explained. ìSince 1930 the ChickEvans Scholarship Program has sent 10,000caddies to college, including two from TheAlotian Club who are attendingNorthwestern University today. Hosting afirst class competition and supportingscholarships for caddies made the decisionto welcome the Western Amateur toArkansas an easy one."

The Alotian Clubís two current EvansScholars, brothers Joe and Kevin Evans, both are majoring in economics atNorthwestern. Joe is a junior, and Kevin isa freshman.

ìWe anticipate continuing to partner withThe Alotian Club in developing moreyoung caddies who will qualify for the.championship.

Paulina Gretzky - way cooler than her dad!

Quick HitsThe Metroplex is a sports fan's dream - great pro sports, college power-houses and some of the best high school sports programs in the country -and we deliver it all with typical Texas hospitality.-Fort Worth Mayor Betsy Price on D/FW being ranked the No. 1 sports area in the U.S.

By Vance Gonzales/Correspondent/[email protected]

Yes, indeed, The Great One of Hockey hasa little Great One, a little lady who’s mak-ing a name for herself over Twitter thesedays. Paulina Gretzky, the 22-year-olddaughter of hockey legend Wayne Gretzky, has dabbled in music and acting before butthat was before her true calling cameabout: Posting provocative photos onTwitter.

Sadly, she never became a music sensation, but she has become an Internet legend. AsThe Chive headline noted above its galleryof 34 scantily clad cleavage-filled PaulinaGretzky images: “Paulina Gretzky is usingthe Twitter machine properly.” Only prob-lem, of course, is that old man Gretzkywouldn’t stand for it, or so it appears.

Paulina Gretzky’s Twitter feed has beendeleted. And David Graham of the TorontoStar pieces together a neat little timelinethat suggests Wayne Gretzky may haveencouraged it?

“As Gretzky’s name was linked last weekwith the potential sale of Maple LeafSports and Entertainment, it’s possible thenews raised the profile of his daughter’sracy online photographs. Her dad wasborn and raised in Brantford, a far cry fromHollywood nightlife that has attracted hiseldest daughter. Before her Twitter wasclsed, she tweeted “Having a nice sit downdinner with my dad about socialmedia…haha#SIKEEE(sic.)”

Now, as we all know, Wayne Gretzky sum-marily rejected the Hollywood lifestyle, having never once dropped his stick orunlaced his skates to party during his timein Los Angeles. Nope. not once. ThePuritan from Brantford they ‘im. Eitherway, the Paulina Gretzky Twitter account isno more. All we’re left with are the out-standing contributions she’s made oversocial media posts. And God thank her forthem.

Hoops Coach Roy Williams pissed at fansIt's an unwritten rule in the world of sports that you don'tcriticize the paying fan. Take cheap shots at coaches, play-ers, officials, media and everyone in between, but thosewho bear the cost of paying for a ticket are bulletproof. An exasperated college basketball coaching icon has bro-ken this rule in a big way.

Roy Williams lashed out following North Carolina's 90-80loss to UNLV over the weekend in Las Vegas. The coachtold listeners to his radio show that he was not pleasedwith the crowd near the Tar Heels bench. North Carolinafans sold prime tickets from the school's booster club toRunnin' Rebels fans.

"If you sell our tickets, your tickets that you get to theRams Club to somebody else, and they come cheering forUNLV, I've got no use for you. And that's as blunt as I canput it. People have a right -- but not our people. You'reeither with me or you're not. There's no middle ground,"Williams said, according to News 8 Las Vegas.

Now that the lockout is over, it’s time to assess our World Champs for the upcoming season.

Ten Takes On The Dallas Mavericks' juggling of time, money and personnel as they gear up for a Dec. 9 sand-wich of free agency and training camp and a Dec. 25'Mavs Event of The Centuries' when they begin the seasonat the AAC on Christmas Day, on national TV, to begintheir title defense with the villainous Miami Heat theopponent:

1 Tyson Chandler is sign-able. Really, it's less trouble-some and complicated than most think. The Mavs cankeep their budget as it was last year and keep their capimpact the same, too, by signing TY to a deal that starts atabout $10 million annually. It's market-value, it's similarto the big contract he played on previously, and it keepsthe championship fam together.

2 In fact, using the same budget boundaries, Dallas canre-up all five of its desired FA's: Chandler at $10 mil,Caron Butler at $6.5 mil, Barea at $4 mil, DeShawn at $4mil and Cardinal at $1 mil.

Among that group, only Butler is a true complication,as he is a) flirting with the Miami Heat and b) coming offa knee injury that might cause you to think $6.5 mil is toorisky.

3 The full NBA schedule is slated to be released earlynext week. Meanwhile, it looks like we're readying for twopreseason games. The Mavs (and everybody else) wouldget the same team twice. Home-and-home. Regional pair-ings. So, for quickness, efficiency and entertainment, it'sprobably Rockets-Spurs, Hornets-Hawks and Mavs-Thunder, right?

4 Rudy Fernandez, acquired in trade from Portland ondraft day, has a chance to be the starting 2-guard here. Butfirst he needs to Show Up and Shut Up. The Spaniardkeeps making homesick sounds, making the fact that hehas a 'distension on the left popliteus muscle' the least ofhis worries. (It's a mild knee injury. No big deal. But withRudy, everything is awfully drama-queeny.

5 Nope, I'm not seeking savings by Amnesty'ing BigWood.

Not this year, anyway.Know the rule: Teams can use the Amnesty provision in

any offseason as long as a) the player was signed beforeJuly 1, 2011, and b) must be on the team's current roster.

This is an ace in Mark Cuban's hand. There is no Mavscontract now that is unwieldy for a title-contending club.Having a standout at backup center at about $7 mil is aspecial value right now. But, if the status of the clubchanges and one becomes unwieldy, out comes Cuban'sace.

And, at the future time, out goes Brendan Haywood orwhomever else is overpaid and underperforming on a non-contender.

6 When I dig into the NBA's new CBA proposal, I seea victory for the owners. I see not a great variation fromwhat was on the table months ago. I see a push for parity(not enough to make Lakers want to becomeTimberwolves, but a push).

But while I see all that, I ultimately don't give a flip who"won.'' Did the owners crush the players? Did the players'antitrust threat work?

I don't care. Basketball is back. That means YOU ANDI won. And that's the side I was always on.

7 In this condensed 66-game season, Every team willplay at least one back-to-back-to-back set (meaning threestraight nights), and up to three back-to-back-to-back setsduring season. That is neither an absolute plus nor anabsolute minus for Dallas. Will the “old guys'' get tiredduring a 66-game crush? Or will experience and depthallow them to survive?

I know this: Bad teams who think 66 games and b2b2b'swill make them less bad are wrong. More demands willmake bad teams more bad.

8 I'm told that following a recent procedure on his foot,Roddy Beaubois is three weeks away. Is there an echo inhere? Is Roddy B not “three weeks away'' into perpetuity?

9 When the dust settles, it'll be interesting to see ifDallas' title, KIDDIRK's leadership and Cuban's player-friendly rep wins the Mavs a big-name veteran at the $1-mil minimum. Any names at this point would be guess-work. But the Mavs have moved into that strata where theGrant Hill types take notice, correct?

10 No, the Mavs aren't signing Howard, Paul, or D-Willvia free agency next summer? If the Mavs keep the pedalto the metal in order to win this year -- as they should --that stuff is not happening.

But ... the idea of being in an eventual sign-and-trademix is viable.

That is, assuming those guys remain on the market untilthe summer of 2012. As it stands, according to various"sources'' and "scoops,'' all three of them are going to endup signing with a) the Knicks, b) the Lakers, or c) in someunprecedented move allowed by a new CBA complication,Howard, Paul and D-Will will sign with both the LakersAND the Knicks.

As the corridor to December opens, theGreen Bay Packers are the clear AlphaMale of the NFL and the obvious choiceto represent the NFC in the Super Bowl.Probable suitors from the AFC wouldinclude the New England Patriots or thePittsburgh Steelers.

Parity is the driving force of the NFL. “OnAny Given Sunday” holds real meaning. The length of the season and layers ofplayoffs keeps hope alive for teams thatcan get on a late season roll.

While it's true that that the two (think NewOrleans v Indianapolis in 2009) best teamswill sometimes meet in the Super Bowl,it's just as likely that a mystery guest willmake an appearance and win a champi-onship. In the last decade, there have beenseveral teams staggering aimlesslythrough the regular season that came outof nowhere to win the Super Bowl.

o In 2001, the New EnglandPatriots were 5-5 but ran the table and wona Super Bowl.

o The 2005 Pittsburgh Steelers hada 7-5 record, made the playoffs as a 6thseed but didn't lose again and won one forthe thumb.

o The 2007 New York Giants went10-6, backed into the NFC playoffs as thefifth seed and went on to win the SuperBowl.

o Through 14 games of the 2010season, the Green Bay Packers were 8-6

yet they made the playoffs as the 6th seedand still won the Super Bowl.

If NFL Parity defeats NFL Obvious in2011, which team is now a legitimate can-didate to be this year's dark horse?

GIVE ME THE DALLAS COWBOYS If you talk to Cowboys fans this seasonabout the team, many of them quicklyadopt a Wile E. Coyote persona. They justknow that pesky Roadrunner is about todrop the Acme anvil on their heads.

This isn't the cocksure mindset fans had in2007 when the Cowboys had the numberone seed in the NFC playoffs. A lot ofanvils have been dropped on heads sincethen and Cowboys fans seem conditionedto believe the worst is going to happen.

Having team expectations managed forthis fan base is not necessarily a bad thing.

It's tough enough to win in the NFL with-out having to deal with extra pressure. I'drather be that stealth team entering theplayoffs instead of the team carrying aburden of expectations.

The Cowboys proved this year in NewEngland and in San Francisco they cancompete with and beat elite NFL teams. With their NFC East bunk mates in disar-ray, the Cowboys appear likely to wintheir division but are they capable of mak-ing post-season noise in January?

CUE “THE NATURAL” MUSIC FOR MILESAUSTIN.In 2009, Austin became a game-changerthe moment (5th game) he was featuredmore prominently in the offense.Coincidence or not, a Cowboys team thatstarted the season 2-2 reeled off 9 wins in

11 games (including a win at undefeated13-0 New Orleans) and won their firstplayoff game in 15 years.

Fast forward to 2011 - Austin has missedseveral games to hamstring injuries in2011. Coincidence or not, two of the bestgames the Cowboys have played this yearwere in San Francisco and New Englandwith Austin in the line-up for both games.

Dallas has soldiered on without Austin formost of the year (behind a mostly stellarseason from Tony Romo) but in theprocess has stumbled upon offensiveserendipity. Rookie Demarco Murray hasbeen a spark and given the team a legiti-mate running game that keeps opposingdefenses honest. Laurent Robinson, pulledoff the waiver wire, has become a favoritetarget of Romo.

I'm not pinning all hopes on Austin'sreturn but the addition of a true home runhitter to an already balanced offenseshould do nothing but help.

Defeating the Eagles in the 2009 playoffsremoved the can't-win-in-the-post-seasondark cloud that had engulfed the Cowboysin previous years. Sweeping four inferioropponents in November means theCowboys are properly focused andrelaxed. That's a good place to be for avery talented team headed to December.

BUMP 'N RUNTwenty-something years ago, somebodyin the NFL wised up and mandated thatcoaches start wearing NFL gear on thesidelines. For the most part, NFL coacheslook fairly sharp because their options arelimited. As the season marches forwardand the weather starts getting colder, fash-ion options expand and unintentional

comedy starts to happen on the sidelines.Remember Wade Phillips and his Stay-Puft Marshmallow coat?

During the Thanksgiving game with theGreen Bay Packers, Detroit Lions CoachJim Schwartz went out on a fashion limbwhen he broke out a dark disco- ball pat-terned / faux hoodie letterman sweater thathad a big blue D slapped on the side. It's byfar the funniest thing I've seen a coachwear this year. It looked like Schwartzeither made a Seinfeldian “Pirate Shirt”promise to somebody's soft talker girl-friend or lost a bet.

I doubt my family was the only one inAmerica to see the halftime show of theDolphins / Cowboys game and hear some-body say “Who is Pitbull?”

OLD MAN COSTASBob Costas is one of the greatest sportsbroadcasters ever and although he's now59 years old, he could still pass for some-body in their early 40's. During thePittsburgh / Kansas City halftime show hehad a rare misstep when he went on a rantover Stevie Johnson's tasteless end-zonecelebration that mocked Plaxico Burress.

Costas sounded like an old man on hisporch screaming at kids, before railing onend-zone celebrations today he called“calculated displays of obnoxious selfindulgence.”

Give me highlights, breaking news orsome kind of smoking hot Erin Andrewslook-a-like at halftime. Don't give me anold man whose formative years were inthe late 60's and early 70's spouting a hyp-ocritical lecture about obnoxious selfindulgence.

When former Miss America LeeMeriwether was only 13 years old shemade her first hole in one. Unfortunately,it was a hole in her dad’s mouth shemade by knocking out some teeth with agolf club. He was trying to make a cor-rection in her backswing and reached inat the wrong time. Her father never hadany plastic surgery to get rid of the scars;Lee said because it was a great conversa-tion piece at parties. It would be awhilebefore she picked up a golf club again. That’s because she was busy winning theMiss America pageant( 1955)and work-ing on the Today show( 1st woman’s edi-tor on air)with Dave Garroway. Also, starring in a number of television serieslike Batman( She portrayed Catwoman inthe 1966 movie version), Time Tunnel,Barnaby Jones, Mission: Impossible toname a few. Her movies roles wereimpressive as well co-starring with thelikes of John Wayne, Rock Hudson,

Buddy Ebsen and Andy Griffith. Livetheater continues to be Lee’s first loveand I can tell you from personal experi-ence watching her perform in ‘Nunsense’when she was here in Dallas a few yearsback she’s a fantastic actress!

These days when she’s not busy acting ordoing charitable work you’ll find her athome back in her native California withher husband actor/playwright MarshallBorden. Ironically, Lee and Marshall metin Texas down in San Antonio where theywere both performing in a theater pro-duction there. Lee said, “He’s always try-ing to coax me to go to the golf coursewith him because he’s an avid golfer.” Ifirst met Lee and Marshall when I wasout in L.A. a few years ago with my wifeand we had lunch at the Beverly Hilton.Lee told me how she got drawn back intogolf after a long layoff. In the 1970’sthere was a TV show called ‘Battle of theNetwork Stars’ that was very popular, featuring celebrities from different televi-sion shows competing against each otherin sporting events like swimming, volley-ball, tennis, bowling, cycling and run-

ning. When the producers asked the starswho played golf no one responded. Finally, I spoke up and told them I playedsome golf when I was young, and I knowhow to hold a club.” They told her,”Good-You’re it.”

Lee reluctantly participated and went onto win the closest to the pin contest, beat-ing the likes of the late Sonny Bono. After that she was getting invites to par-ticipate in numerous charity golf eventsall across the country. At first she told me

she was hesitant to play because she had-n’t really learned all the rules, but shesoon discovered the scramble format andwas hooked on the game. One of hergreatest highlights playing in those chari-ty golf tournaments occurred a few yearsago as she was playing in the groupbehind blind performer Tom Sullivan. “ Itwas so inspirational watching him playand how well he did,” she said. Her hus-band Marshall, who’s a talented golferwho plays about three times a week andperiodically goes with Lee to play insome charity golf events. If you wantyour next golf tournament to be a realsuccess and some real class to it, youcan’t go get any better than to invite LeeMeriwether. Just make sure you don’t tryto mess with her swing or her clawsmight come out—remember, she playedCatwoman. Finally, I asked Lee if she hasever made a hole in one on the course? Inher perfect Catwoman voice she mur-mured, ”No, But wouldn’t that be Purr-fect!”

DALLAS STARSHOCKEY

Blueliner Souray turning heads in comeback yearOnce thought to be finished inthe NHL,Sheldon Souray is performing at an All-Starlevel this season.

by RICHARD S. POLLAKSPECIAL [email protected]

Dallas Stars GM Joe Niewendyk was chal-lenged by the hockey world for taking therisk of signing veteran defenseman SheldonSouray. Last season, everyone in the NHLpassed on the opportunity to claim the for-mer NHL All-Star off waivers fromEdmonton forcing the 35 year old to toil inHershey of the AHL for most of the seasonafter multi-differences with Oilers' manage-ment. For my first article, writing for theDallas Sportspage Weekly,I wanted to makea bold prediction: I say that Souray will benamed an NHL All-Star, again andComeback Player of the Year,as well! I amnot skating with my head down with thepuck on predicting Souray's success in 2011with the Stars. The NHL Brass has alreadyput his name on this year's Ballot for the

All-Star Classic in Ottawa with only 20games played into the season.

AN OFFENSIVE D-MANSouray leads the Stars defensemen with

goals, assists, shots and points even beforeadmirably stepping in on the power playreplacing the injured Alex Goligoski.Defensively number #44 was suppose to bethe 5th or 6th defenseman, at best, but he isplaying as a top two defenseman, leadingthe team in checks, block shots, penalty min-utes and is the only rearguardsman, I see,who stands infront of the net and clears outthe opposition. Souray deserves to be anAll-Star and his performance on ice dictateshis Top Two and Power Play status.

Not so amazing,Souray leads the Stars inpower play goals. Armed with one of thehardest shots in hockey. I was fortunate tosee him play in Montreal at the All-Stargame in 2009 as part of the Canadians 100thyear anniversary Celebration. Souray wasone of the finalist in the slapshot competi-tion.

Souray's first taste of being a Dallas Starscame in Frisco at the Dallas Star's Season

Ticket Holders Exclusive First Ever StarsAlumni game. When asked by Dallas StarsRadio play by play man Ralph Strangis, atthe bench, about how he feels being a DallasStar, Souray exclaimed," I'm probably olderthan most of the Stars Alum playing in thegame,I know I'm older than Modano andcan't skate as fast as Mike." Souray hasn'tbeen a slouch on defense, his veteran expe-rience and savvy makes up for any lack ofspeed and I challenge his complainingabout lack of speed skating. He's just a wiryveteran hoping the opposition reads hisquotes.

SUPERSTITIOUS SOURAYSouray has his superstitions,he's always thelast player on to the ice during warm upsand at the start of the period. His top twodefensive mate, Stephane Robidas says,"he's great to play with, his defensive skillallows me to skate with the puck forward onoffense."

Now when asked by Dallas Stars ColorCommentator Darryl Reaugh during the 5game losing slide, about the Stars tumble,Souray humoristly quotes the famedCharlottetown Chiefs Player- Coach,

Reggie Dunlop, by saying,"WE'RE WORK-ING ON IT." This season, the swift DallasStars Media Staff has added a new statisticto their player profiles with their TwitterAccounts. If you'd like to follow Sheldon'sTweets go to: @SSOURAY.

I am excited to be back, once again, on thelocal beat, able to be covering the DallasStars on a weekly basis with the best localsports print outlet in North Texas. In additionto my International correspondent responsi-bilites with the Fishler Report ,out of NewYork. It is my honor and challenge to beable to share with my local hockey follow-ers in Dallas, my insite and opinions on theHockey we love! ,

For fans of the NBA, and more specifically, fans of the Dallas Mavericks, last Saturdaymorning's announcement that the ownersand the Players Trade Association - remem-ber, the players had disclaimed, not decerti-fied, the players union and had thus becomea “trade association” - had come to anagreement to begin the season, was the finalact of a chain of events that was eerily rem-iniscent to a kid going home for Christmasbreak after his first semester of college.

For NBA fans in general, last season andespecially the 2011 playoffs were amongthe best the league has seen in eons. ForMavs fans, the march through the playoffswas like going home, seeing all your oldfriends, going out partying every night andblowing off steam. Then came the Finalsagainst the hated Heat - a dream match upagainst the franchise that had dashed yourchampionship hopes just five years ago.Getting another chance at them was like thecollege kid hooking up with the one babethat he had been pining over for years. Aftera New Year's Eve party for the ages, he findshimself in bed with his dream girl and clos-es the deal. Like the Mavs, he gets to holdthe trophy and brag to his friends.

Getting the news that the NBA was backwas thrilling, and then almost instantly con-fusing, much like waking up hungover, in acomplete fog trying to piece the previousnight's events back together. “Man, lastnight was the best of my life, but where thehell is my wallet and cell phone?”

That's where we are Mavericks fans. We had

the greatest Spring that this franchise hasever experienced, but now it's time to moveon. What players are even still on our roster?Do we have money to sign our free agents?Wait, who are our free agents? Is Roddy B'sfoot healed? What does the new CBA evensay?

Well, drop a couple Alka Seltzer tablets inthe glass and read on as I try and fill in theblanks.

COULD YOU PLEASE BOIL DOWN THE

NEW CBA TO TERMS I CAN UNDER-STAND?

I can try. Basically it can be distilled to thefollowing details:

Revenue split: The players will receive any-where from 49 percent to 51 percent of bas-ketball-related income based on revenueprojections. The split is set on a base case of50 percent, with the players receiving 60.5percent of every incremental dollar beyondthe targeted amount.

Contracts renewals are restricted to fiveyears for Larry Bird rights players (playerswho re-sign with their previous teams) andfour years for others.

Maximum salaries for players after theirrookie deals expire are limited to a maxi-mum of 30% of the team's salary cap if heremains with current team and has met

benchmark criteria of: first, second or thirdteam All-NBA twice, an All-Star startertwice or league MVP.

Annual salary increase limited to 7.5% forBird players, 4.5% for non-Bird.

Teams may use a $5 million, four-year max-imum mid-level exception if they don'texceed luxury tax threshold by $4 million.Teams more than $4 million over thresholdlimited to $3 million for 3 years.

New $2.5 million exception for teams underthe salary cap.

Rookie pay scale remains the same.

Sign/extend-and-trade deals remain avail-able to teams (think Carmelo Anthony dealfrom last season.)

Teams now have only three days, rather thana week, to match restricted free agent offersfrom other teams.

Minimum team salary must be at least 85%of salary cap for the first two years of thedeal, and 90% thereafter. Basically, ownerswill not be allowed to collect revenue shar-ing dollars and simply pocket the money.

Each team is granted one “Amnesty” card touse on a player currently on its roster. The“get out of jail” free” card does not have tobe used this season.

Luxury Tax: previously, teams paid a dollar-for-dollar tax when they surpassed the luxu-ry tax threshold. For the first two years ofthe new CBA, that will remain the same, however after that the tax becomes far morepunitive. Teams will then pay $1.50 for eachdollar over the threshold up to $5 million;$1.75 for every dollar up to $10 million;$2.50 up to $15 million; $3.25 up to $20million and an additional $.50 for each addi-

tional $5 million over. Ouch.

To sum up, the owners succeeded in some-what regulating player movement by mak-ing it more favorable financially for playersto remain with their current teams. However, the far more stringent luxury taxrules that kick in in 2013 may scare ownersaway from committing to any large long-term deals immediately.

WHO ARE THE UNRESTRICTED FREEAGENTS FROM DALLAS' 2010-11 ROS-TER?

Dallas only has 10 players under contractfor the upcoming season, with six unre-stricted free agents that they must figure outwhat to do with. Unfortunately, several ofthem are players that were vital to theirchampionship run last year:

Tyson Chandler (29, $12.6 million 2010-11 salary). Chandler's stock rose dramati-cally after his defense helped lift theMavericks to last season's championship -which is why the Mavs hope to re-sign him.Dallas could lower its salary-cap hit byusing its amnesty provision on Chandler'sbackup, Brendan Haywood.

J.J. Barea (27, 1.815 million in 2010-11).Barea's value may be inflated around theleague after he performed so admirably inthe playoffs.

Caron Butler (31, $10.56 million). Theknee injury he suffered last season mayreduce the amount he can demand, but thereis no arguing his talent.

DeShawn Stevenson (30, $4.15 million). His fearless attitude, defense-first personaand timely three-point shooting would bemissed if he were to leave.

Brian Cardinal (31, $854k). How much doyou want to pay for taking charges andbench cheer-leading?

Peja Stojakovic (34, $402K). May havereached the end of the line. Couldn't get onthe floor against the Heat last year.

WHAT IS THE CURRENT MAVERICKS CAPSITUATION, AND WHO CAN WE KEEP?

According to Hoopshype.com, theMavericks current payroll sits at just over$63 million, not including any of the play-ers listed above. The luxury tax thresholdwill likely be $70.3 million. If Cuban wereto spend as freely this season as he did lastseason, and the tax penalties that will kickin in two years were in place now, he wouldbe on the hook for over $126 million thisyear!

Luckily for him, he has a couple seasons to

massage the roster to avoid that ridiculousprice tag. Additionally, several players willbe coming off the books next season, drop-ping the team's commitments in 2012-13 to$44.6 million. Maybe the Mavericks acceptthe luxury tax penalties they would incurthis season in signing Chandler to 5-year,$50-$60 million deal and Barea to 5 year,$25 million deals (remember, the Mavs canoffer one more year than any other team),then that would bump their payroll this sea-son to $78-$80 million. They would alsohave a large amnesty chip in their backpocket (either Brendan Haywood or ShawnMarion's roughly $9 million cap hit) thatthey could play to reduce their overall pay-roll during one of the campaigns when theharsh tax regulations hit.

Butler could be brought back at a discount-ed rate, and likely for less than max years,as he is working his way back from a terri-ble knee injury. The only way role playersStevenson and Cardinal will be back is byaccepting discounted offers.

Communication between players and teamsbegan Wednesday morning, and once thefree agent signing date of December 9 hits, player movement will be fast and furious. Awhole off-season crammed in to a week!

What is the new schedule for the shortenedseason going to look like?

We just discovered Wednesday that theMavs would be playing an abbreviated pre-season schedule - just a home-and-homewith the Oklahoma City Thunder to tunethemselves up for the condensed regularseason slate. The one regular season gamewe do know is confirmed is the ultimateChristmas gift: the Miami Heat at home forthe championship ring (or whatever Cubesis going to be presenting the players) cere-mony and banner raising. If the memoriesof last June had faded for LeBron, Wadeand Bosh over the past six months, they willcome rushing back that afternoon.

We are told that the regular season schedulewill consist of 66 games running fromDecember 25 through April 26 and willcomprise 48 conference games and 18 non-conference tilts. Each team will be requiredto play at least one back-to-back-to-backset of games, but not more than three suchsets.

The Mavericks play in far and away theNBA's toughest division; all five teams fin-ished comfortably over .500 and if theschedule is weighted heavily with divisiongames, Dallas could find themselves at adisadvantage.

After sifting through all of this data andpotential roster moves, I'm feeling a lot likethat hungover kid who just wants to crawlback under the covers. At least until the realgames start!

Baseball avoids any possibility oflabor strife.

by TODD KAUFFMANS PE C IAL CO NTR I BUTO Rthe swingingfr iar@gmai l .com

This year, general manager Jon Danielsand CEO Nolan Ryan won't have to travelfar to meet with agents, front office per-sonell, and members of the media duringthe 2011 Winter Meetings. In fact, theywill get to sleep in their own beds at theend of the night.

It's because everyone who is anyone inMajor League Baseball will converge onDallas, Texas and the Hilton AnatoleHotel for the winter meetings. This is usu-ally a time when the biggest movementduring the off season takes place. For theTexas Rangers themselves, it could betheir best chance to make a few more bigsplashes after the signing of formerMinnesota Twins' closer, Joe Nathan a fewdays prior to Thanksgiving.

There are plenty of names on the radar

including their own free agent, C.J.Wilson, relievers Chad Cordero andJonathan Broxton, and a few other starterslike Mark Buehrle who have also madetheir way through the Texas Rangersrumor sheets.

The Joe Nathan signing wasn't enough forfans, though no signing really ever is.Especially with it's guy who just turned 37and went through Tommy John surgeryjust a year and a half ago. They want to seeDaniels and Ryan do more and, with themeetings in their own backyard, it mightbe a comfortable enough environment tolook at it like home field advantage.

While most look at the Nathan signingwith more questions than answers, it gavethe Rangers the opportunity to moveNeftali Feliz from the back of the bullpento possibly the front of the rotation. It alsogave this front office the ability to showWilson and his agent, Bob Garber, theyaren't desperate to re-sign the left handerto the kind of money he's looking for.

But while the Rangers will try to play this

off as they are more than willing to ridethe rotation the way it is, in no way is JonDaniels and Nolan Ryan "okay" with whatthey have. They know full well the rota-tion, as well as the bullpen, is not betterthan last year. In fact, it may be worse thanwhat they had going into the playoffs.

While Joe Nathan seems like a nice pieceto have in the back end of the bullpen, especially with the amount of experiencehe has as a closer, next to Mike Adamswho will undoubtedly have the eighthinning role, the Rangers don't have thekind of solid relief corps that would makea manager smile. In fact, it might be quitethe opposite.

Do the Rangers really have faith in thelikes of Yonishori Tateyama, Koji Uehara,Mark Lowe, and Scott Feldman control-ling the pivotal sixth and seventh innings? The answer to that, though quietly, isprobably a resounding, "no."

But the bullpen isn't the only thing that iscause for concern. Neftali Feliz has neverpitched more than 70 innings since being

called up to the big leagues back in 2009.Yet, somehow, the Rangers now expecthim to pitch close to 200 innings or possi-bly more? They expected the same out ofAlexi Ogando last season and while hestarted out one of the hottest pitchers inthe big leagues, his late season flame outwas the direct result of having neverpitched that many innings in his entirecareer.

That being said, it would make sense thatthe Texas Rangers may in fact look tobring in another starter. They need anoth-er arm that can spell Feliz and his lack ofexperience and even Ogando's second yearof experience. Without that, this team maynot only not return to the World Series forthe third straight year, but they may noteven return to the playoffs.

The winter meetings are only a weekaway. Hang on to your baseball bats, thiscould be the most off season movementwe've seen in a very long time.

Biggest moves in MLB to be made in DFW

BAILEY BOOTS EM' RIGHT THROUGH THEUPRIGHTS EVERY TIME

I wonder if Dan Bailey realized when hegot his shot at kicking for the DallasCowboys that he'd be a vital part of theDallas offense in his rookie year. His 28yarder in the 20-19 win over Miami lastweek has put him a step closer to a teamrecord; he has made 26 straight field-goals, and one with more he goes into therecord books. Either by winning by onepoint in regulation or overtime, without adoubt the Cowboys winning ways have allof the Metroplex on the edge of their seats. We can all thank the young kicker out ofOklahoma State for nailing the games thegame shut.

Now that the door has been kicked open

for Dallas to make a serious run at theplayoffs, one of the team's coaches is cre-ating some attention. Most notably defen-sive coordinator Rob Ryan, who looks likea wild eyed Santa stalking the sidelines, isnow being mentioned as a potential HeadCoach for another NFL team. Is it just fod-der for sports talk radio shows and sportscolumnist or will it be hard to hang ontoRyan?

The rumors started to fly once Jack DelRio got the boot from Jacksonville thisweek but that's all it is at this point. In typ-ical Ryan fashion when he was asked overand over again by Cowboy beat reportersabout bolting from the Dallas stable ofcoaches, he simply shrugged it off.

It's not a surprise that Ryan would makethe list for potential head coaches for anyof the vacancies that are sure to open upafter the season. He has the swagger, thebackground and a Super Bowl ring thatwould certainly seal the deal. However, what's next for Ryan and the Cowboys isthe Arizona Cardinals on the road with thepotential to pick up win number eight a

week before the NFC East Sunday nightshowdown against the Giants.

MERRY CHRISTMAS MAVS FANS

Speaking of matchups we can't wait tosee, now that the NBA is back in businesshow sweet is it that the Mavericks arescheduled to host Miami on ChristmasDay? Do you realize that the Maverickswill finally get their rings? Wow, it could-n't have been scripted any better by MarkCuban's movie company. Jewelry, banner-raising, and the Heat at home in an after-noon game so we all have time to scootback home for dinner - who needs pres-ents? Nothing tops that one?

BOSTON GOES WITH BOBBY V.

This is just too juicy not to mention. A for-mer Ranger Manager is back in the dugoutnot for the Rangers but for Boston. Yes, itstrue Bobby Valentine takes over the reinsofficially, we think anyway, on Thursday. That's when he is expected to do the offi-cial press conference. Valentine cut his

teeth in his first managerial job inArlington, but that was the mid 80's andboy, has his resume' blossomed since theearly days.

Stops include coaching stints in Japan anda pennant with the Mets in 2000.Valentine took the Mets to the WorldSeries in the subway series where theYanks walked off with the 4-1 series win.

My favorite Valentine moment is when hewas tossed from a game in New York in1999 against the Jays in the 12 inning afterarguing over a home plate call - do youremember the game? He came back intothe dugout wearing a fake mustache. AsValentine knows it will take more than dis-guises to win over the hard scrabbleBoston fans. God speed Bobby V!

Mike Lombardi talks with The Musers

Dunham & MillerWeekdays, 5:30-10:00 am

NFL Network andNFL.com’s Mike Lombardi visited with The Musers last

Tuesday.

Craig: Let’s go back toThanksgiving Day. The Cowboys beatthe Dolphins, and that’s four in a rownow for Dallas and they are all alone nowin first place in the NFC East. You’ve gotto like the position they are in…

Lombardi: I do and I think they’regetting better as the time goes on. I thinkthe Giants have a lot of weaknesses. They have an inability to cover in thesecondary, their lack of speed in the sec-ondary, their lack of running game, andcertainly Washington’s not a factor any-more and of course the Eagles were elim-inated by the Patriots this weekend. Ithink the Cowboys are sitting in primeposition, and I think the way the schedulegoes down there’s a chance they’ll be thenumber two seed. San Francisco has twolosses and the Cowboys have to make uptwo games, but they’ve got the tie break-er with them and anything can happen atthe end of the year.

George: Overall, how would you ratethis year for Tony Romo?

Lombardi: I think he’s been great. Ithink what he did against the 49ers wasone of the greatest things I’ve ever seenin all my years as an NFL executive. Ithink the ability to come back out thereand will his team to victory was out-

standing. Look, Tony Romo is going tothrow some interceptions. He’s going tomake some mistakes with the ballbecause some of the receivers he hasplaying for him make mistakes, and it’svery difficult to be coordinated when youdon’t know where the receivers are goingto go. Some of those are Tony’s mis-takes and some of those mistakes are onthe receivers. I think it’s that willingnessto take some chances and willingness tomake some plays is what makes him agood player. He’s played brilliantly thelast couple of weeks.

Craig: The Cowboys have finallyfound a great kicker in Dan Bailey. Asan NFL personnel guy, how much valuedo you place on a place kicker?

Lombardi: We drafted one in thefirst round in Sebastian Janikowski. Ourowner Al Davis placed a huge impor-tance on kickers. I think it’s really a fac-tor of the game. If you want to controlvertical field position, and you have adefense that can do that, then you need tohave a kicking game that is strong. I

think if you build an organization, I thinkthe first thing you have to do is build akicking game. You want to win an ele-ment of the game, and if you have a goodkicker then you can do that. It’s a valuethat you really can’t measure. It’s some-thing that nobody wants to discuss, butit’s very important to put emphasis in,especially if you want to win champi-onships.

Craig: Ndamukong Suh had the inci-dent on Thanksgiving Day. Do you thinkhe has a screw loose?

Lombardi: I think Detroit needs tohandle him. Forget the league office; Ithink Detroit needs to send a message tohim. He’s really being selfish. He’s put-ting himself first, and that behavior isreally hurting his team. I think Detroitreally needs to set the tempo, and make astatement to the locker room. His apolo-gy on Thanksgiving Day was so poorlydone, and you wonder if he was eventhinking when he made that apology. IfI was in the Lions front office I’d sus-pend him for at least one game.
