Smith School as an
educational commu-
nity strives to chal-
lenge our students to
reach their academic
and social potential.
Parents and teachers
work collaboratively to
provide students with
the necessary tools
and skills for individual
growth. We are com-
mitted to creating
learning experiences
that will lead to life-
long mutual respect.
Welcome back to all of our students, families and staff. I hope everyone had a fun, restful
break in preparation for another exciting school year. It was so nice to see so many smiles
on the first day of school and to hear about our students’ summer adventures. The enthu-
siasm and positive energy our students bring with them each day makes the school a great
place to be.
The school looks great as a result of the work our custodian, Donna Walters, completed
throughout the summer and the time the teachers have put in to prepare their classrooms.
The front entrance looks spectacular due to the efforts of Jennifer Smukavic throughout the
summer. Thanks to all of you!
As you are aware, we have high expectations for our students in effort, behaviour and
achievement. By taking care of the first two, we are certain that the third will fall into
place. We believe the sky is the limit for our students as they have unlimited potential. With
their best efforts and our support, they can excel at whatever they choose. Perseverance
and positive attitudes will allow them to reach their intended goals. Your support along this
journey is necessary and appreciated. Please don’t hesitate to contact me here at the
school if you have any questions or concerns. My door is always open and I welcome
your thoughts and suggestions as we work together to ensure success for all of our students.
I look forward to a fantastic year and hope to see everyone at the Open House BBQ on
September 19th!
Morning Entry
We have adjusted our morning routines for the 2013-2014 school year. Our morning as-
sembly will only take place on the first day of each week. On the other days, students will
go to the playground when they arrive at school until the entry bell rings (8:55 a.m.) and
announcements will take place over the intercom as students will be in each of their class-
rooms. Supervision on the playground begins at 8:45a.m. each day.
Anaphylaxis
Anaphylaxis is a severe and life-threatening allergic reaction to foods, insect
stings, latex and medications. We are aware that some of our students are
known to be at risk of anaphylaxis. Note that PEANUT products cannot be brought to Smith
School. If you have a child that is at risk, please ensure that your child’s homeroom
teacher is aware so we can work together to create an emergency action plan.
School Council
Our many volunteers help to make Smith a special, vibrant learning environment. I’d like
to thank the School Council group for their efforts to make the first day of school a pleasant
one for our community. Their “coffee on the blacktop” was a wonderful way to start the
year. Please join us on Monday, September 16th at 6:00pm in the school library as we strive
to support all students with their educational experiences.

LUNCH ENVELOPE dates By now you should have received an envelope that lists the Pizza, Hot Dog and Sub Lunches, as well as Milk Program orders. Sorry
for the mix up on two dates. All school run lunches are on Thursdays. Please note that the first Pizza lunch will be on Thursday,
Sep 19th, and the Sub Lunch is on Thursday, Sep 26th.
Save Our Subscriptions (Magazine Campaign)
Begins on September 16th. We will be running our annual magazine subscription campaign again beginning on September 16th, and would appreciate your
continued support. Although you may have received notices from publishers for your new and/or renewal magazine orders, it
would be very much appreciated if you didn’t renew your subscriptions through them, but waited for our campaign so the students
can take your orders. However, hold onto your renewal notices – if that price is lower than offered through the school program,
you will pay the lower price by attaching the coupon to your order. A large portion of the funds stays here in our school commu-
nity. Thank you in advance for “saving” your magazine orders and helping make our future campaign a great success!
