TFS will not be able to respond to every call for help.

Power and phone services will probably be cut and trees may block roads.

WILL YOU BE ABLE TO HELP YOURSELF?

Read on for more information.

A nearby safer place is anywhere that provides enough

shelter from the radiant heat, so you can survive the fire

front.

They are LAST RESORT, HIGH RISK and survival is not

guaranteed.

Include them in your Bushfire Survival Plan because they

may save your life if you get „caught out‟ by a bushfire.

Other points:

Read the TFS Bushfire Prepare to Survive Guide for

how to choose nearby safer places.

The best nearby safer places are the ones you

choose, based on your own circumstances.

Don‟t rely on a nearby safer place as your only

safety option.

NEVER go through bushfire to reach a nearby safer

place.

Where are they in this area?

THE ONES YOU CHOOSE ARE BEST - Because they are based on your circumstances.

Draft 1 (September 2011)

What this plan is for: Use this to update your personal Bushfire Survival Plan so you are „bushfire ready‟, because in the worst conditions:

Inc lud e n earb y sa fer p la ce s in your Bush f i r e Surv iv a l P l an .

PREPARE. ACT . SURVIVE .

Every Summer in Tasmania you need to be ready for bushfires.

Over 90% of Tasmania is considered „bushfire prone‟. Be „Bushfire

Ready‟:

Prepare YOUR property (use the TFS guide: „Bushfire Prepare to

Survive‟) and your Bushfire Survival Plan. Make sure you:

revise your insurance policies

discuss being „bushfire ready‟ with your neighbours

know the „through‟ roads (check the map)

can keep informed (even when town/mains power is cut).

Consider battery-powered radios with AM frequency and a

home phone powered through the landline (not „cordless‟).

Include in your plan:

the safest places to be during bushfires especially when the

Fire Danger Rating (FDR) is “Severe” or higher

some „nearby safer places‟, ones you can reach without a car.

GUIDE: If you cannot identify suitable „nearby safer places‟,

then on days when the FDR is forecast “Severe” or higher, your

Bushfire Survival Plan should be based on leaving early.

If bushfires are in/near your area USE your plan:

keep informed (weather, fires and warnings). Listen to ABC

Local Radio and check the www.fire.tas.gov.au.

take action: Protect your own life and property and anyone

else you have responsibility for e.g. family, pets, stock. Most of

the time, prepared properties can and should be defended

by their owners.

check in with your neighbours if you can.

when the FDR is forecast “Severe” or higher, the safest

option is to leave early. Head away from the fires, toward

another town centre is best (e.g. Bicheno or Swansea) until

weather conditions change e.g. gets cooler, less windy.

REMEMBER, LEAVING EARLY IS THE SAFEST OPTION .

LAST RESORT: If there is no time left to leave the area before

fires impact on you, go immediately to a nearby safer place that is

the safest in the conditions (it may be your house if it is cleared

around it and it isn‟t on fire yet).

AFTER the fire front has passed, check everyone‟s safety, tune

into the „Information Sources‟ (listed on the map) and continue to

patrol the property, putting out embers/fires.
