LANGUAGE IDENTITY AND DIVERSITY IN A GLOBALIZED WORLDthOn the 8 and 9 May, Aula Magna was the venue for the 13 Conference on British and American

Studies, an annual event organized by the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics within the Faculty of Letters. This year's edition was concerned exclusively with topics pertaining to the vast area of Linguistics.

Researchers from Romanian and foreign universities joined the panel sessions and delivered presentations on syntax, language acquisition, pragmatics and discourse analysis, translation studies and lexicography, etc.

The event welcomed the participation of two plenary speakers, Dr Alberto Fernández Costales and Dr Shawn M. Clankie. Dr Costales from the University of Oviedo (Spain) approached the topic of English as medium of instruction in European higher education. The presentation focused on possible effects that the implementation of bilingual education in European universities may trigger. The speaker highlighted some local issues associated with bilingual education, and proceeded to identify potential threats and opportunities for universities.

Dr Clankie from the English Department at the Centre for Language Studies, Otaru University of Commerce (Japan) gave a speech on names and naming practices. Amply illustrated with examples, the presentation considered the place and role of onomastics within the field of linguistics, the importance of studying names for the information they may provide us with, and introduced the results of the speaker's extensive research in the field. As already mentioned in previous issues of the University's Newsletter (April 2015, June 2014), the English Department that Dr Clankie is currently heading is already collaborating with our faculty in a project targeted at the implementation of hybrid education.

The roundtable organized on the second day of the conference was intended as an opportunity for participating researchers to brainstorm ideas and identify areas of mutual scholarly interest which might set the ground for future joint projects.

FOREST POLICY AND ECONOMICS – FOREST AND ENVIRONMENTAL LAWSBetween 19 and 23 May, Transilvania

University of Brașov, through the Faculty of Silviculture and Forest Engineering, played host to a prominent event organized under the aegis of IUFRO ( International Union of Forest Research

thOrganizations): the 16 symposium of Division 9 – Forest Policy and Economics, the Forest and Environmental Laws research group.

Organized for the second time at Transilvania University of Brașov (the first annual meeting of this research group was held in Brașov in 2004), the symposium invited the participation of world‐renowned researchers in forest policy and economics from several states: Slovakia, the Czech Republic, Austria, Slovenia, Turkey, Serbia, Germany, the Republic of Moldova, and Romania. The participants focused, inter alia, on analysing and discussing the status of the European forest sector, from a policy and legal perspective. In keeping with its objectives, the meeting became a hub for exchanging ideas and expertise with a view to formulating, implementing and amending the regulatory framework of the forestry sector. Although the contributions mainly centred around European issues, several other topics were also considered, such as the evolution of forest policy in Turkey, Tajikistan or Japan.

The event felicitously coincided with the adoption of the new Romanian Forest Code, which also constituted a starting point for debates around the evolution of the forest law in Romania.

In April and May this year, the activities performed by Dr Dorin Boldor from Louisiana State University under the Fulbright Teaching/Research Award included the initiation and development of a collaboration programme between the PI's programme at LSU and Transilvania University of Brașov.

The two‐folded teaching component of the programme consisted of a modular course in the area of biofuels and bio‐products for engineers and non‐

engineers and a series of five seminars and workshops on topics related to the professional development of doctoral students and young researchers. The biofuel and bio‐products course included background information on the need to produce fuels and products from renewable biomass‐based resources, a review of fundamental scientific and engineering principles required for designing biofuels and bio‐products production processes, and an overview of the most important processes for biofuel production. These processes include the production of ethanol from sugar crops (sugarcane, sugar beets) and starch‐based crops (i.e. corn), for the production of methane gas via anaerobic digestion, thermochemical methods for the production of syngas, bio‐oil, and char, the use of algae as a biofuel crop, and marketing. The last module focused on marketing and economic policies associated with the use of biomass for the production of biofuels and bio‐based products.

The professional development component included seminars and workshops covering topics such as writing scientific papers, preparing professional presentations, requirements and responsibilities of MA and PhD students, as well as grant writing, and means of organizing a productive and efficient research group/lab. For the research component, collaborative research activities were targeted at producing biofuels and bio‐based products from renewable natural resources available in the mountainous region of Brașov County.

An already traditional event, this year's edition of The Exhibition of Furniture/Wood Restoration entitled A Mirrored History, celebrated its tenth anniversary. The opening on 8 May was attended by students and faculty staff, by members of the academic community, representatives of museums and cultural institutions.

The audience were invited on a trip down the memory lane as they watched the exhibits ‐ furniture or wood pieces restored by fourth year students as part of class assignments. The exhibition also showcased the pieces that high‐school students from Johannes Honterus ‐ Brașov, Petru Rareș ‐ Feldioara and Șt.O.Iosif – Rupea restored during the event

Restorer for a Day – Skill for a Lifetime, as part of the School Differently week. The diversity, the value and uniqueness of old wooden objects most often stranded in dusty attics or barns are useful in raising awareness to their possible recovery, conservation and restoration. The students' and pupils' efforts were awarded in different categories: The Most Beautiful Object (restorers: Ionelia Brebeanu and Edith Bajko), The Most Extraordinary Object (restorer: Ioana Gal) and The Most Determined Restorer (Raisa Teciu).

The work done in the restoration lab is meant to highlight the artistic value of restored objects, to bridge between the past and the present and to increase, in the long run, the national visibility of our faculty and University.

The exhibition will stay open until 10 July. Anyone interested in the art and craft of restoration is invited to join us in the Building L, on the University Hill.

Between 11 and 19 May, the Faculty of Music concluded an artistic collaboration with the Chamber Music Ensemble Missions of Mobile representing the Music Department of Mobile University, USA. The ensemble is made up of fifteen student members and is coordinated by Dr Graham Anduri. The activity of the ensemble consisted of concerts held daily in the cities of Braşov and Ploieşti, as well as of educational programmes for the children living on the outskirts of Brașov city, in Bod and Budila.

The artistic cooperation with our students from the Voice Department materialised into shows held at the University Aula Magna or the Patria concert hall. Performed exclusively from memory, the repertoire included vocal selections from universal music literature from Bogoroditse Devo by Serghei Rachmaninov to Romanian pieces like It is thee we praise by Musicescu and Ana Lugojana by Vidu. It all culminated in a collection of Afro‐American songs accompanied by two instruments, Conga shaker and sticks. The well‐known selections Cantique de Jean Racine by Gabriel Faure and The Prayer by David Foster enjoyed the accompaniment of Dr Mihaela Pavel.

The ensemble delighted and inspired our students to such an extent that a future similar collaboration will probably be inevitable. The American students, in turn, were enchanted by Romanian music, our local scenery and the delicious Romanian food.

This collaboration was coordinated by Mihaela Buhaiciuc, formerly a teaching staff member at the University of Mobile, USA.

ROMANTIC PIANO SOUNDSOn 21 May we were delighted to listen to a new piano recital within the concert season at Transilvania

University of Brașov. The pianist Mădălina Paşol had a repertoire including ten Preludes by Serghei Rachmaninov and two well‐known pieces by Frederic Chopin: Ballad I and Andante Spianato & the Great Brilliant Polish piece.

Mădălina Paşol was born in Bucharest, graduated the George Enescu Music high school, and went on to study in Germany at the Art University of Berlin. In her career she was the recipient of numerous grants and prizes in national and international competitions followed by successful concerts as a soloist or together with chamber music groups and world‐renowned musicians. Since 2014 Madalina Pasol has been the president of the Arts Institute whose mission is to promote Romanian artists and national cultural values world‐wide.

Her performance on 21 May brought us closer to the romantic sounds of two of the best‐known pianists of all times. Madalina Pasol's highly professional performance did justice to the profound and

expressive music; the dense musical discourse doubled by the Slavic melancholy and spirit of Rachmaninov's Preludes was followed by a change of tone, brought about by the refined and delicate character of Chopin's work.

The performer's remarkable technique was supported by a clear construction of the musical discourse to which she added expressivity and emotion, which positively spell‐bound the audience.

Between 25 and 31 May, the Medical Students Scientific Association of Braşov and our University organized the project “Medical Education Days”. Overall, the activities in this project were directed at enhancing the students' level of orientation and development, both professionally and personally.

The aim of the two postgraduate orientation conferences was to raise the medical students' awareness of many aspects related to different medical specialisms: more or less attractive sides of the work involved, sources of satisfaction and stress, and opportunities for a future career. Over 100 students attended the talks given by doctors from more than ten medical specialisms.

A particularly attractive event proved the Knots and Sutures Workshop, aimed at introducing the students to the surgical field and to test their aptitudes for a possible career in this field.

Another highlight on the agenda was the conference “Education Opportunities Abroad” which offered students an overview of student exchange schemes such as the Erasmus and CEEPUS student mobility programmes, and the SCOPE/SCORE summer training programmes organized by the Medical Students' Scientific Association of Braşov.

The winners of the two contests, i.e. anatomy and internal medicine, received specialized books. The participants were also invited to a Team‐building training session.

The Medical Education Days received positive feedback from both student participants and teaching staff, which showed it to be a project with a great potential for future development.

Professor Virgil Olariu was a brilliantly intelligent man, a valuable teacher and researcher in the field of theoretical and applied mechanics. He was the initiator and founder of the Precision Mechanics programme at our University. During his career he became the pivotal centre of professional interactions between teams of specialists from Politehnica University of Bucharest, the Polytechnic University of Timisoara, Gheorghe Asachi Technical University of Iași, the Petrol – Gas University of Ploiești, etc. He stimulated innovation and creativity, and was author of dozens of inventions and innovations. He was a formative spirit and a model to follow in many respects.

Being an accomplished professor, his outstanding teaching manner allowed him to impart the secrets of mechanics to his disciples, which turned him into a prominent figure in higher technical education at Brașov and beyond. This enabled him to leave behind a strong school of technical mechanics and precision mechanics. Our thoughts of gratitude for his achievements will keep alive the memory of Professor Olariu, a man who will always have a pride of place in the history of our University.

Joy, energy, grace and emotion, all conveyed through music. This is how we could describe the concert organized by the Faculty of Music on 20 May at the Students' Art Club.

While hard work is essential to reaching our goals, equally important is showing everyone that perseverance, ambition and patience combine in the study of music, the end product being what we offer on stage. In putting together this show, we gathered students enrolled in the pop music programme and students in the traditional music programme, and the result was full of original, surprising and special moments.

The Glissando Quintet opened the evening, followed by the Jazz Quartet. The performances included both vocal and instrumental music, the members of the Young Romanian Artists band delighted the public with the diversity of their repertoire. The second part of the evening raised the audience to their feet because of the two moments of traditional music performed by two groups of students accompanied by the Plaiuri Transilvane Orchestra.

We would like to express our gratitude to the coordinators, Dr Valentin Muntean and Dr Liviu Iosif, but also to the Faculty of Music for its support. This project proves that hard work and ambition go hand in hand, and that through our art we can bring joy to others.

Rampad is the newest addition of the group of the Metabras "Steel People" company group, a popular award‐winning brand which saw the light of day 21 years ago.

Founded in 2012, Rampad's business figures soared to an impressive multimillion euro in turnover in just three years of work carried out primarily in the area of civil, industrial, and agricultural constructions and, secondarily, in structures and metallic works.

Thirty‐year old Cătălin Ceposu is the general manager of this enterprise. Besides a clear sense of direction in business, he also possesses a special kind of intuition and steadfast commitment to whatever he undertakes.

A 2008 graduate of the Faculty of Railways, Roads and Bridges at Transilvania University, Cătălin began his career as employee of Metabras in the supply department, moving to the sales department and finally to the top management, which gave him the expertise and drive to start his own business.

Currently Rampad features prominently on a highly competitive market, relying on the combined strength deriving from its 90 employees ‐ workers, engineers and managers who helped carry out over 25,000 square meters in constructions and over 5,000 tons of metal "cut" for armature and metallic structures ‐ and on the continuous investments in technology and equipment.
