We Did It! Happy 100th Anniversary!
Two years ago, when we decided that The Traffi c Club of Cleveland would survive, we set a lot of objectives and goals. Thanks to you, our offi cers and board members, we accomplished everyone of them. We brought back, after 7 years, The Ernest E. Bracken, Jr.- Charles H. Glazer Honorary Award. We also brought back The Sid Waldron-Ben Zager Award and The Pasquale A. Deluca Award.
Last year, we gave a scholarship of $850.00. This year we will give out at least two $500.00 scholarships. Another accomplishment is that we were able to create a 2013 Roster. This was the fi rst roster since 2008. It was paid for by the 15, $100.00 advertisers. We have also sent out THE PERISCOPE and thanks again to our advertisers that helped make these things possible. It did not cost The Traffi c Club any additional money to accomplish these things.
We have added 42 NEW members. Fantastic! Did you get your one new member to join?! We brought back The Reverse Raffl e this year. It was so well received that we held two of them!
The Traffi c Club of Cleveland, now has a 3 year SUCCESS plan! Thanks to Brad Weaver, our incoming President, Dave Carlisle, our Executive Vice President, and Mr. Kirk Piene, our President in 2001 – 2002 who will now come back as our Vice President. Bill Donley will be our Treasurer for his 14th year. Thanks Bill. That will make Mr. Donley our longest elected offi cer. Congratulations!
In reference to our PERISCOPE; As you all now know, we have been publishing and sending out THE PERISCOPE. Most of you know of a gentleman by the name of Jay Orr. Jay is now 87 and is considered legally blind. With a big microscope glass, he is able to read our PERISCOPE. He is so pleased that he has sent us $25.00 to help with the expense. For Jay and maybe others that have a vision problem, I hope we continue with the mailing. In THE PERISCOPE, we also brought back the articles on our retirees by Dennis Downey. He does a great job!
I just broke my arm patting myself on the back! But I hope all of you break your arms as well since it’s all been possible with our team effort.

I don’t remember which specifi c Golf Ou� ng it was, I do remember it was at Tanglewood Country Club where I fi rst met the member I will tell you about. Back when the large freight companies had dozens of sales people covering the local customers many of those salesmen were ac� ve par� cipants in the Traffi c Club of Cleveland. Most of those salespeople knew the customer base be� er than I could have learned with many years of trying.
I enjoyed watching the professional sales people and how they handled themselves. It was easy to realize which ones were the be� er ones. I remember some of the sales people who were the most impressive in my mind. People like Pat Hever, John D’Amico, Bob Mangini and Neal Wakeman come to mind right off . There are many salespeople that I recall as being very professional; the list would be almost endless. The list of companies they worked for could be almost as long.
It was back in the 80’s or early 90’s I don’t remember the specifi c date, but I recall vividly my fi rst impression of the salesman from Preston Trucking. Outside of the Clubhouse at Tanglewood he was with several of his customers ge� ng ready for the round of golf. I watched him for several minutes, how he interacted with his customers and how they reacted toward him. It was easy to see, this was a professional. Of course I asked around to fi nd out who he was and learned his name was Bill Griggs.
I never got to spend much � me with Bill at any event because his a� en� on was on the customers he came with. I do remember that because of Sales People like Bill our events were just more credible. Down through the years at many events Bill would support the Club by having at least 1 foursome (and many � mes two) at the golf ou� ngs or a table or more at the Annual Dinner. So when I was looking for a Re� red Member to write about I was very pleased that Bill was kind enough to share his story with us.
William F. Griggs, Jr. was born in Cleveland on February 17, 1945. He grew up in the West Side and a� ended West High School. A� er gradua� on from high school in 1963 Bill a� ended TRI-C for 2 years while working at Ford Motor in Brook Park. He realized that this job was not for him and moved onto a seasonal job at Interna� onal Salt Co. checking and weighing the trucks. A� er working as a warehouse manager he took a job at Apex Fiberglass Products, with no real experience as a TM he had to learn quickly, which he did. Many sales people from various trucking fi rms called on him, and wondering what their job was like he asked them ques� ons. Bill didn’t know if he could be a salesman but he started applying for that very posi� on. In 1969 a� er several interviews George Spencer at DC Interna� onal (later to become T.I.M.E-DC) hired him and Bill learned the trade that would become his career. He stayed at T.I.M.E.-DC for approx 2 years un� l a major labor strike caused cutbacks which put him out on the street once again.
A� er a short s� nt with Transcon, Consolidated Freightways started recrui� ng him. Bill began working with CF in 1971 and stayed for 11-1/2 years, He thoroughly enjoyed the fi rst 10 years as a sales rep but the 1-1/2 years in Na� onal Accounts caused him to resign in 1981. I am sure that the travel requirements had something to do with that move. He decided to try something other than the LTL business and took a job with Matlack, a tanker company, as a regional manager. Bill spent 2 years with Matlack then decided to get back into LTL sales. He landed a job with Preston Trucking in 1983 and enjoyed 13 years with them. When Preston closed down he was lucky enough to land with Yellow Freight. Bill remembered that his fi rst day with Yellow was the day of their annual Customer Apprecia� on Golf Ou� ng which he was very impressed with. Bill stayed with Yellow un� l he re� red in April of 2007. He likes to say that “that he worked hard and yet also played hard” and that “I spent all my years in this business in the sales area and I can tell you this, the greatest part of being in the trucking industry was the opportunity to meet so many wonderful people, many of whom I consider good friends. Some have gone, but will never be forgo� en in my thoughts.......”
Bill told me about the major changes in the trucking industry especially deregula� on. A change that so changed the business that not many were able to survive. He s� ll dabbles with freight sales, on a part � me basis, seems it has hard to let go if this line of work.
Bill and Mickey were married in 1966 and have 3 children, William III, Dawn and Nicole. They also have 6 grand children that keep them busy. They spend their � me traveling the states even Hawaii, also to Mexico several � mes. A trip to Europe is planned for this fall. The Griggs enjoy boa� ng; they have their boat docked at Saw Mill Creek Marina. Bill is a former member at the Cleveland Yacht Club and even a past Commodore at the Westlake Yacht Club. He s� lls enjoys playing golf when � me allows.
He wanted to make a point of the fact that he is very thankful and has been blessed with a very good life. He also wanted to thank everyone from the Traffi c Club for all of the years and asks God to bless us all.
Once again I have been fortunate enough to be able to tell everyone about another re� red member of the Traffi c Club of Cleveland.

This was the year that Cracker Jacks fi rst included a prize in each box. Woodrow Wilson was inaugurated as the 28th President. The internal Revenue Service fi rst levied and collected a 1% Federal Income Tax passed into law on October 3rd. Cleveland, Ohio ins� tuted the fi rst small claims court in the country on March 15th. Dayton, Ohio suff ered a great fl ood killing more than 400 in March of this year. The Brooklyn Dodgers opened their home fi eld of Ebbets Field on April the 9th. Gideon Sundback invented the zipper and was issued a patent on April 29th. The European Country of Albania was formed on May 30th. On September 10th the Cleveland Call and Post printed their fi rst issue. Henry Ford started the fi rst moving assembly line on December 1st. In Panama on October 10th the last dam was blown up and the waters from the Atlan� c and Pacifi c were fi rst mixed. The fi rst coast to coast highway known as the “Lincoln Highway” (now also known as Route 30) was opened on October 31st. Woodrow Wilson signed the “Federal Reserve Act” into law on December 23rd. The Post Offi ce also started Parcel Post Service on January 1st. On January 16th two things of note happened, the Bri� sh House of Commons accepted “Home Rule” for Ireland and Donald D Downey (my father) was born to Irish immigrant parents in Youngstown.
A lot of historical things happened in 1913, but I seemed to have le� out two other important things. On February 25th, 1913 Carl Wolza, Jr. was born in Cleveland, Ohio but before that on January 25th a group of Industrial Traffi c Managers and Rail Road representa� ve met under the chairmanship of W.V. Bishop to form The Traffi c Club of Cleveland. Mr. Bishop was the Traffi c Manager of the Upson Nut Company. The club elected D.F. Hurd to serve as the fi rst president. Mr. Hurd was the Traffi c Commissioner of the Cleveland Chamber of Commerce.
As far as we know Carl Wolza is the oldest living member of the Traffi c Club of Cleveland and being that he and this club both turn 100 years old this year I would like to tell a li� le about both. At one � me the Traffi c Club of Cleveland was able to boast as being the largest Traffi c Club in the country. I am sure that everyone has received the latest offi cial roster of the Traffi c Club of Cleveland and if you turn to the fi rst page (at least it supposed to be) you can read the condensed history of the our club. The history is a good read and is only one page.
When I spoke to Carl Wolza I asked him what one thing, in his mind, stood out about the Traffi c Club of Cleveland. He told me without a doubt it was the quality and class of the individuals he met in the club. Carl was born on the West Side of Cleveland and a� ended South High School. He also graduated from Western Reserve University now known as Case Western Reserve University. Carl met and married his wife in 1936, she was a secretary at a large Cleveland Company the Wolza’s didn’t have any children. In 1941 a� er gradua� on from Case Carl entered the Army Air Corp and served as a Captain based at Alamogordo Air Base in New Mexico where he piloted a B-24 Liberator.
A� er the war Carl returned to his wife and hometown and took a job with Griggs Distribu� on working as a Traffi c Manager. A� er Griggs closed Carl took a job with the White Motor Company as the Corporate Traffi c Manager overseeing 20 of their subsidiaries. He told me he greatly enjoyed his job at White Motors and stayed with them un� l he re� red in 1975. While at White Carl joined the Traffi c Club of Cleveland in 1948 and served on the board of governors for several years.
A� er re� rement Carl Wolza worked as a consultant for the Government of Tanzania in Africa and then for TRW and Western Union Corp in the US. Carl and his wife travelled the globe for many years a� er that. When I asked him what countries he had visited the simply said “All of them.” He told me he greatly missed the travelling and that at 100 years old his travelling days were over. He lost his wife about 10 years ago and said it wouldn’t be the same.
I tried to get more informa� on but the ba� eries in his hearing aid were giving him problems. The Traffi c Club invited Carl to come to our 100 year celebra� on but he politely declined saying “All my friends in the Traffi c Club are dead and gone” he did pass his best wishes on to all of us and said that he had to go something about the damned hearing aid. I really enjoyed speaking with Carl; he has lost some memories but overall is extremely sharp and entertaining.
Carl Wolza, Jr. was very proud of his years at White Motor Company and the work he did with the Government of Tanzania and at the companies of TRW and Western Union but mostly he is proud of all of the friends he has made and he thinks of them o� en.
I don’t think I can fully pass on to you how impressed I have been by the many members I have wri� en about. I have had the pleasure of interviewing true business leaders and members of our club. I would have loved to have spoken to many more that are no longer with us. What a remarkable group and membership in the Traffi c Club of Cleveland is something they all had in common.
Can you believe it…………100 years old……. almost as old as Pasquale DeLuca….
