Spring General Meeting
At the Hower House
60 Fir Hill, Akron
Thursday, March 20, 2014
6:00 p.m. Shop at the Gift Shop
6:30 p.m. Dinner followed by the program and business meeting
Program: WC Member Kate Waits will present “The Joys of Volkswalking
U.S. State Capitals.”
For the past six years, Kate has participated in the low-cost, non-competitive walking program
sponsored by the American Volkssport Association (ava.org). As part of that program, she has
completed walks (designed by volunteers from local AVA clubs) in 46 states. Ohio is a hotbed of
volkswalking activity—the state has more than 50 year-round volkswalks, as well as many special
one-day walks.
One of Kate’s greatest volkswalking pleasures has been to walk in state capital cities. To date, she’s
done volkswalks in 42 state capitals, plus her home town of Washington, DC.
Kate’s talk will briefly cover volkswalking basics but will focus on what she’s encountered in those
capitals (and capitol buildings) from Augusta to Olympia and Tallahassee to Phoenix. Her talk will
include some photos, and there will be time for comments and questions from the audience.
Our business meeting will follow the program. Below are the nominations for offices for the 2014-
15 academic year.

On Tuesday, April 8, the group will go to the Maltz Museum in Cleveland. Activities of the trip will

In late spring or early summer, a trip to the Cleveland Cultural Gardens is planned. Also there is the
possibility of a trip to the Canton Museum of Art, depending on the time when a national exhibit with a
focus on spotting fakes and forgeries in the art world is scheduled. This exhibit is scheduled for four
museums throughout the country, Canton being one of them. More later.
