Swine Flu alert in Kashmir

President Doctors Association Kashmir (DAK) and HINI expert Dr Nisar ul Hassan today in a statement sounded Swine flu alert in Kashmir valley in view of the recent spurt of swine flue (H1N1) cases.

Since December, there are 30 lab confirmed HINI cases including 6 deaths in Hyderabad and 16 new cases in Delhi with one death, which is alarming, he said.

“As HINI virus is already in our com-munity after 2009 pandemic when we had 53 positive cases and 3 deaths, so there is a definite threat of swine flu outbreak in valley as well,” Dr. Nisar said adding, “valley hos-pitals are not prepared to combat Swine flu and the two designated hospitals, SKIMS and SMHS do not have the facility of negative pressure isolation wards for HINI patients.’

Tamiflu (Oseltamivir), the only drug used for treatment and prophylaxis of H1N1 is not stockpiled in the valley, he added.

There are no Swine flu vaccines available in the valley which are to be given to high risk persons as the virus in them can be fatal, Dr. Nisar said.

Persons with acute febrile respiratory ill-ness should report to a doctor or a nearby medical facility and suspected cases should be tested and immediately quarantined.

People should follow infection control measures like hand washing, respiratory etiquettes and use masks and stay away in case of symptoms to prevent and control the virus transmission.

Cut in Kashmir’s Kerosene Quota

IrrationalThe Kashmir Chamber of Commerce &

Industry (Inc) have viewed the cut in the Ker-osene quota to Kashmir as irrational and ill timed. The Chamber calls upon the authorities concerned to assess the post flood situation and the harshness of the winter in Kashmir before taking decision on the Kerosene quota cut. The authorities should appreciate that in absence of regular electricity and sufficient LPG supply the Kerosene as source of light and heat is the only support that helps the people living through the vagaries of winter weather.

In a statement to CNS, the Chamber express-ing dismay over the callous attitude of the au-thorities at the centre who instead of providing sufficient relief packages for rehabilitation and survival of Kashmir flood-hit people have cho-sen to cause trouble by quota cut of the essen-tial commodities like Kerosene, have appealed the Prime Minister of India to issue immediate instruction for resending the Kerosene quota cut decision in the case of Kashmir.

In the meantime the KCC&I has taken up the issue with the Hon’ble Minister for Con-sumer Affairs, food & Public Distribution, Govt. of India for revocation of the decision with regard to Kerosene quota cut in the case of Kashmir.

471 torture centres active in Kashmir

SRINAGAR - There are 471 torture centres in Kashmir for political activists who are regularly held by police for anti-India protests, a rights group said Wednesday.

A study carried out by Voice of Victims (VoV), a rights groups based in Kashmir, has found that more than 1100 youths and separatist activists were arrested by police and other government forces during the raids in last year.

“There are as many as 471 torture centers active in Kashmir valley only and youths and separatist activists are being physically and mentally tortured there,” Abdul Qadeer, the VoV’s executive director said.

In a year when a devastating flood punctuated two important elections in Kashmir, he said a surge in conflict-linked violence claimed more lives than in previous year.

Qadeer said the graph of violence linked to over two-decade long conflict went up in Kashmir dur-ing 2014 with 99 insurgents, 53 civilians and 82 government forces killed.

Qadeer said out of the 53 civilians killed, 17 were killed by armed forces personnel while 24 were killed by unidentified gunmen.

“Six civilians died in cross firing incidents be-tween Army and militants. During the border firing between Indian and Pakistani soldiers, five civilians were killed, while one person was killed in clashes between the workers of two pro-India political parties,” he said.

The group said 10 among the slain civilians were political activists. “One out of the 10 political activists was killed in group clashes, two died when a police Rakshak (armored vehicle) hit them during a group clashes at Warsun,” it said.

“There shall be no travel restriction for the Indians to visit the villages namely; Koragbal, Gulshanpora, Kanzalwan, …Gujran and Abdullan,” reads the order issued on December 30.

The order, said that a checkpoint would be setup in the town to track the information about the tourists visiting

the picnic spot.“The police department, Bandipore

of tourists,” the order said. “The tour-ists/people visiting these areas/vil-lages shall be required to submit a copy of any valid document issued by any Government agency or Public Sector

SOPORE: On a chilly wintry morning of January 6, 1993, peo-ple of Sopore town woke up to a normal day. During those days BSF (Border Security Forces) sta-tioned in the town used to patrol the roads extensively.

At main chowk, Shalpora Gully, some people were unload-ing a truck laden with some goods that day. It was supposed to be a routine day until gun shots cre-ated panic and tension instantly gripped the whole town. And then all guns starting blazing. BSF men stationed in the main chowk started firing indiscriminately on the people.

Reports suggested that a group of JKLF militants opened fire on a BSF patrolling party which re-sulted in killing of a BSF person-al. The militant outfit also de-camped with his service riffle. This enraged the paramilitary men who then “shoot to kill” and started stacking up bodies across the town. The act which left many families devastated in Sopore was soon termed as Sopore Massacre.

Among those who were killed in the Sopore that day included three brothers identified as Bashir

Ahmad Shalla, Sajjad Ahmad Shalla and Muhammad Ashraf Shalla.

Ghulam Hassan, an eyewitness to the incident while narrating the incident said: “I was a 17-year-old at that time and used to run a Barber shop which was very close to the firing incident spot. That day, I was doing my normal business. But suddenly, I saw people running scarily and heard some of them talking about IED blast at main chowk.

“When I came out of the shop to inquire about the incident, I saw men in uniform firing indiscriminately on the people. A BSF personnel was lying in a pool of blood,” Hassan recalled.

A Bus which was on the way to Sopore from Bandipora was also stopped by the “blood thirsty” BSF men who started firing indis-criminately on it and killed most of the people and left many bloody wounded.

Another eyewitness told this reporter that he saw BSF men throwing gun powder on the shops including the famous cinema “SA-MAD TALKIES”, Islamia College Sopore (Women’s) and also burnt shopkeepers alive inside in their

shops.“After taking refuge inside a

building, we left our shoes on first floor of the building and were watching all this carnage from top of the building,” the eyewitness said. “In a meantime, two BSF personnel came to search more persons and I offered two Rakaats of nafal nimaaz and prayed for

help from Allah.”“When I finished the prayer, I

saw BSF men leaving the building and another BSF personal saying that “Yeh jootay un logoon kay hai, jin ko hum nay goliyaan mar di aur jalaya (the shoes belong to

those whom we killed and burnt down).”

He welled up while recounting the incident. “Around 59 civilians were martyred that day,” he said. “And around 350 above shops were smoked up by ruthless BSF per-sonnels.”

Another eyewit-ness recounted: “When we came out from the building,

a BSF officer ordered his men to assemble

us and start firing. I feared for my life and started weeping. It was then a BSF man told me, ‘you saw everything and it is now your turn!’ ”

But the timely visit of then deputy commissioner, he said, saved him and others from the “insanity” of BSF personnel. BSF personals took photos of the locals

and meanwhile, a senior police officer came there and started hurling abuses at the locals.

A few days after, the state gov-ernment announced relief for the victims.

One of the members of Traders Federation Sopore said that Syed Ali Geelani appealed the victims not to receive any relief from state government by saying “we will collect our own relief across the state and our men will work for that”.

“But unfortunately the relief never reached to the victims,” the trader alleged. “Geelani was not sincere in rebuilding the Sopore town again.”

Earlier, the trader said there was rift between the Geelani group and other locals in Sopore town “because of which government relief was not provided.”

A police official on the case proceedings said, “The case is the office of CBI and they have start-ed to investigate.”

A case is almost closed, the cop said, and there is less chance to re-open the case because of failure and un-availability of wit-nesses.

APHC has no say in Kashmir goverment formation: NC

The National Conference on Wednesday, while castigating the All Parties Hurriyat Conference leadership for issuing statements over the government formation, said people cannot be left at the mercy of the dreadful situation.

“We really fail to understand that when the separatist leadership during the elections had issued a

boycott call and had urged the people of the state to stay away from polls, how could it interfere in the formation of the government,” NC additional general secretary Dr Sheikh Mustafa Kamal said.

He maintained further that there are several Hurriyat leaders who had stated that polls are a non-issue and can in no way infringe upon the Kashmir cause. “If it is a non-issue, how come long speeches and statements are being issued at pres-ent. Once they have boycotted the polls, they should not poke their heads into the process of the gov-ernment formation,” said NC’s firebrand leader Kamal.

Kamal, who is the younger brother of NC patron Dr Farooq Abdullah, said the people have voted for the mitigation of their day to day issues and they cannot

be left at the mercy the situation. “As Hurriyat leaders are busy in scuttling the formation of the new government by issuing statements, does that mean Hurriyat is going to provide alternate government to the perturbed people of the state. They must come clear over such issues.”

The senior NC leader was quick to castigate PDP, saying BJP and PDP have already been in alliance and at present the discussions are nothing but the sheer amounts of the face saving going on. “I can tell you that PDP and BJP are al-ready in alliance. In 2008, they staged the Amarnath land row and both got benefitted during the fol-lowing polls. In parliament polls also, they had a pact. It is BJP that indeed has created the PDP. ”

SRINAGAR – The working president of National Conference – Omar Abdullah – has decided not to continue as the caretaker Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir where no government has been formed even sixteen days after the results of recent Assembly elections were announced.

Sources said that the outgoing Chief Minister met Governor Nar-endra Nath Vohra Wednesday eve-ning and asked him to relive him from the temporary position that he had assumed on the Governor’s re-quest after filing his resignation as his party failed to secure required mandate in the State Assembly.

According to Omar, the interests of the State can only be served by a full time administrator and not a caretaker with no mandate to govern. “I had assumed govt formation would be a matter of a week or 10 (days). Today we seem even further away from the goal than we were 10 days ago,” he posted on micro-blogging website twitter.

Omar emphasized on proper government formation in view of the recent tension on the interna-tional border that displayed about ten thousand people, hardships of winters and the continuing need for relief for flood affected.

In yet another indirect support

offer to the Peoples Democratic Party, which has emerged as the single largest party in the State, Omar said that the party had to explain to the people why the State was head-ing towards central rule even when the party had support of two other parties for government formation.

The Governor earlier set January 19 as the deadline for government formation in the State. If no coalition is able to form government, the Governor rule is expected to avert a constitutional breakdown.

BJP maintains silence on Article 370

SRINAGAR: With the likelihood of a People’s Democratic Party (PDP)-Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) alliance increasing by the day, the saffron party is now tight lipped on Article 370, which was its poll agenda in the Jammu region.

Ahead of Assembly elec-tions, the BJP had made Article 370 its main poll plank and sought its abrogation, however, after facing resent-ment from vari-ous quarters and some of its Val-ley based lead-ers, it diluted its earlier demand and said it only wants debate on its utility.

However, the BJP leaders are still maintaining silence whether it has given up its demand, seeking “debate” on the controversial Act because of negotiations with PDP. “I won’t com-ment on it. I am presently busy in a meeting,” senior BJP leader and par-ty’s in-charge J&K affairs Avinesh Khanna told The Kashmir Monitor, when asked what his partys current stand on the issue was.

Another senior party leader and in-charge Kashmir Affairs Ramesh

Arora said he did not know whether BJP had taken any decision on Article 370 with PDP yet.“I have to confirm whether any decision has been taken yet. So far as I am concerned no such assurance has been given to PDP so far,” Arora told this newspaper.

Earlier, the PDP spokesperson has said that his party has set up five con-ditions to the BJP for government formation including Mufti Mohammad Sayeed as chief minister for six-years, respect for self rule, revocation of AF-SPA from certain areas and strength-ening of Article 370.

On Monday, the PDP spokesperson said the party was ready to form the government with BJP on issue-based agreements.

The BJP and the PDP have been exploring various possibilities for government formation since election results on December 23 threw up a

hung Assembly. The PDP emerged as the single largest party winning 28 seats, followed by BJP’s 25, Na-tional Confer-ence’s 15 and the Congress’s 12 seats.

However, the BJP has said that PDP has ac-cepted its de-mand that there

won’t any compromise on sovereign-ty of India, priority must be given to the development of the State and equal share of funds and development for all the three regions of the State.

During the election campaign, all parties including PDP, NC, Congress and others made it a poll-plank against the BJP and sought the votes on the assurance that they must vote for them to prevent rightwing party from com-ing into power, which wants to “abro-gate” Article 370.

As government formation is de-layed, new MLAs prefer to visit civil secretariat

As the uncertainty over the for-mation of new government in the state continues, the newly elected MLAs have preferred to visit civil secretariat to resolve the griev-ances of the general public and their voters. One of the BJP MLA Dr Krishan Lal who won the Assembly elections from the Chhamb Assem-bly constituency told KNS that the entire attention has been diverted towards the new government forma-tion and with the result people are struggling with their problems. “See though we are confident that the new government will start its func-tioning but as elected MLAs we should work for the people,” he said and added that MLAs should visit

secretariat for addressing the griev-ances of the general people.

He further said that the state had an adequate governance structure in September. “The floods first paralyzed the government. And the election announcement that followed then put curbs on government ac-tions. The common people are fac-ing immense hardships as nobody is listening their grievances,” he said and added that because of the delay in government formation no proper system is in place in the gov-ernment offices.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) MLA Abdul Haq Khan who won the elections from Lolab constitu-ency told KNS that without govern-ment the people are facing hardships. “ With out the government the com-mon people are facing problems. It is our duty to hep them by address-ing their problems,”he said.

Meanwhile according to sourc-es the state is facing a governance deficit, as efforts on government formation remain deadlocked.

A senior officer in the civil sec-retariat told KNS that nobody is willing to initiate any process fear-ing he may have to explain things once the new masters set foot in the secretariat. “No major work is hap-pening in the highest seat of power, and the financial year will be over soon so meeting targets will be an issue.

Sources said that crisis is visible in the civil secretariat where officials are busy getting feedback from their subordinates and nothing is moving as things are standstill.

Sources also said that as the entire attention diverted towards the next government, the state’s financials are under stress. “We need approvals that are beyond bureau-cracy. Part of resource is stuck up at the central pool. Under the plan, for instance, J&K was supposed to get a Special Plan Assistance but only half funds has been released and the rest is in waiting,” of the senior official in secretariat told KNS.

Observing that Jammu and Kashmir threw up a fractured mandate in the recent state assembly polls, Bhartya Janta Party (BJP) president Amit Shah Thurs-day said talks were on to form the government.

“Talks are on. It’s a strange type of a mandate. So, naturally.. None have a clear mandate,” Shah said during a press conference in Hyderabad.

Replying to a query on Article 370 which gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir, he said Article 370 has been part of BJP’s agenda though nothing has been firmed up vis-à-vis government formation in the state.

“Article 370 has been part of BJP’s agenda. The question is that we don’t have a clear mandate. We have to form government. We are talking to other parties. It will be discussed and finalised. We cannot hide and we have to put it before the nation.. Nothing has been final-

ised,” he said.He said BJP does not have the majority required for

abrogation of Article 370.Asked if BJP has “forgotten” the Ram mandir issue,

he appeared to be evasive and said, “We have not forgot-ten. Even if we have forgotten, you have done right by reminding us.”

Shah made it clear that BJP is not in favour of “pre-mature release” of 13 convicts, including five jailed in assassination case of former Punjab chief minister Beant Singh, as sought by Punjab Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal.

The BJP President on the occasion highlighted NDA government’s achievements in last seven months in office on various fronts, including formation of SIT to bring back black money, getting India’s concerns ad-dressed at the WTO with regard to MSP for farmers,

We live on that part of the land which is known as the land of Sufis and the land of Saints. In our mother tongue it is gloriously famed a “Peer Vear”. But now here the evils are increasing tremendously, and the prominent one among them is drug addiction. Drugs are of primarily two type’s legal and illegal one’s. Here I am concerned about the illegal ones. It includes al-cohol, cannabis, smoking stinks, cocaine, heroin, ganja, corex, hash-ish, marijuana, boot polish and so forth. Each year drug intake induce millions of serious illness. Drug ad-diction effects the society very badly. Drug addicts use their money in a futile way and make their character of living impoverish and immoderate. Day by day it is decimating our soci-ety censoriously. The issue which I mentioned is the one that people are most concerned about. The people across the valley are disturbed from this atrocious illness, particularly the youths. Youth is trapped in this evil mostly because of unemployment. There are other reasons too by which our young generation embroiled in this disgruntle stench, for instance, throughout the agitation number of carriers of our youths got decimated, some of them got mentally frustrated, while some lost their beloved ones and so forth. Now they are just treat-ing their depression in their own way simply by taking drugs. Another reasons that too flourished this evil in our society. Like the hunger to gain more and more money. They just play with the life of our youth’s in order to become rich without caring about the future of our society. These are beasts in the name of humans. The use of drugs in our generation is common from the every corner of the society. Our generation day by day is desperately demoralizing. Excessive use of drugs induces sickness which resembles mental illness. The drug addiction has verily damaged their blessed health which almighty Allah bestowed to them. The use of drugs is considered as the mother of all evils. It’s a myth in our generation that the drugs are being used to over-come the frustration and stress but in

actual drug addiction wrecking the people’s lives physically, mentally, morally, and also spiritually and this misconception also passes to our genesis that consumption of drugs are good for health but genuinely its im-pact on health is extremely agonizing. As we are well aware about the words “when health is lost everything is lost”.The use of drugs is also prohibited in Islam as the Almighty Allah says in Quran, ‘Satan’s plan is to sow en-mity and hatred among you with in-toxicants and gambling, and to hinder you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer, will you not then give up,’’ Quran [5:93].Drug abuse is a serious problem that affects almost every community and family in some way. Once you use up

drugs there is a chance that you could become freaky addicted to them in such a way you might feel like you can’t live in absence of drugs. By consumption of drugs there might be more chances to get outrage, you might have been doing things but not in a way like you did, as we are well aware about how many incidents which are happening now a days like accidents and all that. In meantime drug intake can damage internal health, it can damage liver, kidney, brain, lungs and other organs too. Therefore when the body gets af-fected there is a very less chance to survive life jubilantly, which results in stressful soul and makes a person more anxious. The survey report displays the figure of drug abusers is around 62% in our valley, It is esti-mated that most of the drug abusers are males and the shameful assign is that the female drug abusers are also present in our valley but in a very lesser quantity. Day by day it’s figure also up rises. Meanwhile in the past there were scandals in our prestigious

schools where our students snaffle the harmful drugs. It is a disgraceful activity for the association of schools as they don’t take this matter seri-ously.By consumption of drugs the society is also turning towards adultery, and this addiction worsen the environ-ment of our society, whether this addiction is done in a practical man-ner or through the internet but at the end this addiction will worsen our genesis. Islam prohibits adultery , not only prohibits but also closes all the avenues and by all means starring to it, under Islamic law, the punishment for adultery is hundred lashes and Almighty Allah have sounded dread-ful warning against adultery in Al-Quran, Allah says, ‘’and come not near unto adultery, Lo! It is an

abomination and an evil way.’’ Let’s be safe from adultery or fornication. Therefore the simple way to turn up from the spill of drug abuse and other harmful evils is to follow the basic teachings of Islam. We need to seek refuge and should educate our young generation about the ill effect of drugs, and therefore Islamic orga-nizations ought to make campaigns against drug abuse.Drug abuse is considered as one of the biggest social evil so let’s make an initiative to save our society from this atrocious illness. Meanwhile state government should try to aware their force and keep an eye on drug peddlers. Drugs are extremely nox-ious for human health; once you are embroiled in this curse there is a very less chance to get out of this dis-gruntle stench, so be pragmatic and save our beloved ones from this pa-thetic evil. The drug abuse is deci-mating our society slowly. To get rid from this social evil we need to inau-gurate some of the medical camps to avoid this useless habit. We should

attend Islamic seminars and therefore Islamic organization should hold regular seminars on this torment is-sue, in the meantime government should try to reconcile the drug abus-ers, and should germinate some of the economic sectors, might be it is due to unemployment our genesis is get-ting addicted to this harmful evil. When our young generation will earn their livelihood, and become busy with their work there are more chances to get rid from this evil. Meanwhile, Non-Government Agen-cies should give job opportunities to our jobless citizens, and make them busy with their own work, at the same time I would like to tell those persons in our society which are fi-nancially affluent invest your wealth in a proper way, for instance germi-nate some of the industries by which our youth can easily earn their liveli-hood, and hopefully their stressful mind will shift to stress free. At in-dividual level it’s our responsibility to save our young generation from this atrocious illness. Every member of the society has a role to act in the construction of a healthy society. We need to take steps to save our young generation from this dreadful addic-tion, do what you can do for them; whether by germinating industries or through exhortation.Otherwise the day is not so away from us when our society will fully be involved in this disgruntle stench. To eradicate the menace of this evil from the society we need to change ourselves, unless we change our selves our society won’t change. Drug abuse has devas-tatingly intensified the current situa-tion.In mean time let’s look upon the Gods wrath which befell upon us when the devastated flood hit our valley in remembering September, and recall the past when the hazard-ous earth quake hit the valley in 2005. I wonder why we people don’t learn from our mistakes, we keep on sinning. We have lost our conscience. We need to change and rectify our-selves and our society from this counterproductive burden. There is a lot more to think about it, otherwise worst is yet to come.Remember the verse: -“But seek the forgiveness of Allah; for Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most

Merciful.’’(Al-Quran)‘’Live your life happily and say No to

Drugs’

ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 to be the first

event without either Miandad or Tendulkar

Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene

and Shahid Afridi of Pakistan are in line to become the most experi-enced players in ICC Cricket World Cup history, after they were named in provi-sional squads for the tournament that starts on 14 February.

The two players made their World Cup debuts at the ICC Crick-et World Cup 1999, and have appeared in every event since then.

While Jayawardene featured in the final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2007 and 2011, as well as the semi-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2003, Shahid Afridi was a member of the Pakistan side that played the final at Lord’s in 1999. He captained Pakistan at the ICC

Cricket World Cup 2011 where Pakistan reached the semi-final.

Both players will join the ex-clusive company of Wasim Akram, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Ara-vinda de Silva, Inzamam-ul-Haq, Sanath Jayasuriya, Jacques Kallis, Imran Khan, Brian Lara, Muttiah Muralidaran, Thomas Odoyo, Ricky Ponting, Arjuna Ranatunga and Steve Tikolo, who have each played in five ICC Cricket World Cups to date.

Pakistan’s Javed Miandad and India’s Sachin Tendulkar, with six ICC Cricket World Cups each, share the record for the most appear-ances at ICC’s pinnacle event.

Interestingly, this will be the first ICC Cricket World Cup which will be held without either Javed

Miandad or Sachin Tendulkar. Ja-ved Miandad played from 1975 to 1996, while Tendulkar represented his country from 1992-2011.

Miandad featured in semi-finals in 1979, 1983 and 1987, final in 1992 and quarter-final in 1996, while Tendulkar appeared in the 1996 quarter-final, and 2003 and 2011 finals.

Besides Jayawardene and Sha-hid Afridi, seven other players are in line to appear in their fourth

World Cup: James Anderson, Chris Gay-le, Brendon McCullum, Younis Khan, Robin Peterson, Kumar San-gakkara and Daniel Vettori.

The United Arab Emirates (UAE), which is returning the ICC Cricket World Cup for

the first time since 1996, has named the oldest and youngest players of the tournament in its 30-player provisional squad. Khurram Khan at 43 is the oldest players (born 21 June 1971) while Yodhin Punja, who turned 15 on 24 April 2014, is the youngest player.

Both Countries Have No Posi-tive Attitude Towards Pakistan

Cricket, Says Zaka Ashraf

Former Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) president Zaka Ashraf has al-leged that India and England are the reason behind the suspension of spin-ners Saeed Ajmal and Mohammad Hafeez. Ashraf said that he warned the PCB not to send Hafeez to India for unofficial test in Chennai.

“I had already warned the PCB not to send Hafeez to Chennai for the biomechanics test because India and England both have no positive attitude towards Pakistan cricket,” Ashraf was quoted as saying by The Dawn. “I asked PCB to send Hafeez to Austra-lia, but they didn’t pay any heed. Now you can see Hafeez cannot bowl dur-ing World Cup,” he added.

On Sunday, Hafeez failed in unof-ficial testing of his bowling action in India after six of his deliveries were found to have elbow extension of over

15 degrees. Hafeez was suspended last month from bowling in interna-tional cricket.

“I still believe the bowling action of both Saeed Ajmal and Hafeez are legal because in the past they cleared the test, and it [the current scenario on their bowling action] is all a drama hatched by India and England to attack Pakistan’s best spin-bowling depart-ment ahead of the World Cup,” Ashraf said.

While Hafeez still has a chance to make it to the World Cup as a batsman, Ajmal’s absence will badly hamper Pakistan’s chances in the quadren-nial event to be held in Australia and New Zealand in February-March.

Ajmal was banned from bowling in international cricket by the ICC in September. The 37-year-old off-spin-ner withdrew from the World Cup squad after he failed to completely correct his action. He appeared before a Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) com-mittee on December 27 to inform them of his decision.

State’s star cricketer Parvez Rasool has said he has no regrets on not being able to make it to the world cup team as he says the selectors have the authority to drop or select anyone on merit.

“I think the selectors have made a right choice. They know which player has the capacity to play in a particular field. In Aus-tralia, I believe spinners are not needed much. If you look at the f ina l l i s t , y o u w i l l s e e t h a t every-o n e h a s b e e n s e -lected as per the requirement- after all it is a world cup,” said Parvez.

He maintained further that he will continue to work hard so that in the coming matches, he could perform well. “I will con-tinue to work so that I could emerge as a better player and I would play for my team in future. As far as my personal feelings are concerned over being dropped from the world cup team, I have no regrets as I believe that such decisions are not made with any prejudice but purely on the ba-sis of merit so that team could perform well.”

Parvez grabbed headlines in the year 2009 when he was de-tained by the police in Bangalore in connection with a suspected

presence of traces of explosives in his bag. He objected to the checking of his bag by sniffer dogs at his hotel. After question-ing, the police learnt that his resistance was only due to his Quran and a prayer mat in the bag.

Parvez who represented In-dia against Bangladesh on 15 June 2014 at Mirpur where he took two for 60 in 10 overs, ridiculed the reports of him be-

i n g dropped from the world cup team on t h e grounds of h a i l i n g from Jam-mu and Kashmir.

“This cannot be

the reason. It carries no sense. At present, what matters for team India is to win the world cup. Dropping or selecting anyone on the basis of one’s ethnicity is nowhere existent in team India. What matters most is the require-ment of the players.”

Meanwhile, he also took a jibe at the state authorities here, saying the lack of infrastructure in the state is affecting the prac-tice and performance of the budding cricketers.

Substantiating his claims, Parvez said in Valley and in Jammu, there are no profes-sional cricket stadiums where-in one could practice in a better way.
