I think back about four years and remember calling in the production car drivers and having a talk with them about the same time of year regarding the exact same prob- lem. As the season wears on, it seems people are less ad- verse to denting a fender to obtain a few precious seconds. We cannot condone over-aggressive driving tactics and Con- ference will continue to support future Race Stewards in their concern for safety on the track. Unrelated to any pushing and shoving, there was a roll-over in Sunday's improved race. Bill Thaw got his MG Midget out of shape and barrel rolled out of turn four. Fortunately he was uninjured, and it appeared as though the damage to his car was minimal. The race at PIR saw the largest entry of any this year. In my production car race there were 42 starters. Lucas elect;:ics struck my Lotus again, and I had to start from the back of the grid. It was an interesting experience in that I was able to observe first hand the driving of a lot of mid-grid people. Some of the newer drivers in the slower cars are not giving signals as to which side to pass on, or if they do, it is on an illogical side. How- ever, the majority of the drivers did an excellent job, and I had the opportunity to wave to most all 38 as I worked my way up through the pack. If you weren't there to see #24 finish, I will comment that several people have offered me the use of their gasoline credit cards at future races. Conference's finale at Westwood was also a well attended event which came off very smoothly. Unencumbered by a race car I was able to spend more time visiting in the pits and got a chance to work flags in the Esses for one race. The closest of this year's class championship bat- tles came down to the wire at Westwood and made for some very exciting racing. Two drivers put in notable perfor- mances. Both Tom Webb and Pat Murphie started at the back of their grids. Webb came through the Formula Ford field to finish third, while Murphie repaired his Lola after his crash at Portland and lapped all but one other car winning the Sports Racing race and making him the first Conference driver ever to win championships in both open and closed wheel cars in one season. The nominations are in for Driver of the Year, and the Contest Board Representatives will be returning their vote to me very soon. The nominations this year were again very deserving people. This seems to be an award that goes to the most deserving driver each year. Conference headquarters has been in touch with Northwest Region SCCA in an attempt to coordinate our race schedules for the coming year. We have been able to make good stri- des in the area of communication between Conference and SCCA this past year, and we hope to improve upon this even further. We are at the current time exploring the possi- bility of Conference and Northwest Region running one or two joint sanctioned events this coming season. I would like to welcome the Calgary Sports Car Club back into the ranks of the Conference affiliate clubs. Calgary had several drivers Memorial Day and many more Labor Day at the Spokane races this year. These people have some very well prepared and driven cars and gave some of our best drivers a.real run for their money. We have had some inquiries from the Alaska Sports Car Club in how they could affiliate with Conference. Some details are being worked on at the present time. I think that Conference participation is on the upswing, and I am plea- sed to see the interest of some new clubs in affiliating with our organization. The affiliate clubs are a good source of our future drivers within Conference. It's these new people that keep the organization strong.

The double race weekel'!d at Deer Park Raceway north of .:)pokane 1-1as another success, and more cars were on the crid than there had ever been before at Deer Park. In ~revious issue of The Memo, Ed Howell, our Race StewWJ commented on the number of fender-bender incidents

I think back about four years and remember calling in the production car drivers and having a talk with them about the same time of year regarding the exact same problem. As the season wears on, it seems people are less adverse to denting a fender to obtain a few precious seconds. THE VIEW FROM THE TOP

Our annual awards banquet is just a couple of weeks away. You should have recieved your room reservation card with the last Memo. Details of the banquet have been finalized. Cocktails will be served at 6:30, and dinner at 7:30. On the menu this year is Braised Veal Cutlet Maison, Almond Steamed Rice, green salad, a vegetable and dessert. Pat Moe is the registrar for the banquet again this year. The cost is $16.50 per person, and Pat can be reached at 206 377-1782. We need to have your reservation for the banquet by November 7th, so remember to turn your reservation in to Pat nowl Kathee Tipton has done an excellent job arranging decorations and lining up a band for us to dance to when the awards are done. We have a block of rooms at the Bellevue Holiday Inn set aside for the Conference drivers so that we can get together and not bother the other guests on the oanquet weekend. This year promises to be as big an awards party as we've ever had in the past. We're looking forward to seeing everyone tnere.

THE DRIVER'S MEETING by Ed Howell, Race Steward

CSCC at Portland Int'l Raceway, September 17th and 18th

Approximately 150 drivers participated in CSCC•s September 17th and 18th races at FIR. As the season comes to a close and the points tight in many classes there were some very exciting and close races. On Saturday, drivers were treated to sunny skies and mild fall temperatures. Sunday, however, the clouds opened and with the high winds provided less than desireable conditions.

Following race group one, which was run on a dry track, all the production cars were impounded to the scales. Between the checkered flag and the end of victory laps the rain came in force, and by the time all cars had been weighed we were all thouroughly soaked. One car, #112c/w was found underweight and disqualified. A protest was filed by the driver of #254c/w against #79c/w for having a modified intake manifold. After inspection, #79c/w was found to have a non-stock intake manifold and was disqualified.

Rumor has it that there was a portable hot tub towed into the paddock Saturday and that the resulting party was something to behold. Several stories were circulating Sunday about semi-attired people in and around the hot tub. There is even a report of an article of intimate clothing belonging to a sports racing driver, who will go nameless for obvious reason, hanging at half mast from the flag pole across from the Rose Cup Room. As Bob Plotts, Cascade's Race Chairman, put it, "It seems we've reached a new cu.ltural low."

SCCBC at Westwood, September 24th and 25th

The final race of 1983 is now history. With several championships at stake, SCCBC had their best turnout of the year with 147 drivers entered. The racing was close and fast with at least 1 new track class record being set.

SCCBC had several personnel changes for this last race and they should be complimented. For the most part this race went off without a hitch.

Drivers, with only a couple of exceptions, did a very good job all weekend. Two drivers were over 105dba Saturday but made the modifications neccessary to correct the problem by Sunday.

• • Now that the 1983 season is over and my tenure as Race Steward is almost over, I have mixed emotions. I'm glad the year is over so that I can begin to prepare for next year as a driver. And I'm sad to see this job end. I've learned a great deal about Conference and what makes it such a fantastic organization, but most important, I've • made many many new and valued friendships that will carry on.

I sincerely hope to see each of you at the banquet in November.

THE EDITORS CORNER by Douglas Taylor, Memo Editor

This issue of The Memo is the most important you will receive this year. We've had nine issues of race announcements, race results and championship points standings, but this one wraps up the entire 1983 IGSCC season. In this issue you'll find race results for the final races at Portland and Westwood, and a complete compilation of the championship points for the entire season.

For the first time, The Memo has printed the proposed rule changes for 1984. In ICSCC racing, rule changes are made once a year, at the Contest Board Fall Meeting. The structure of Conference allows for rule changes in a fairly democratic manner. Your club's drivers meet and debate the proposed changes. Votes ·are cast in your club on each proposal. The consensus of your club is taken to the Contest Board Meeting by your representative. Each member and affiliate club rep votes on each issue according to the mandate of your club. Each club casts a block of votes equal to the number of licensed senior drivers in the club. The best participant in this process is an informed driver. I just hope this issue of The Memo gets to you before you~ club meets, in time for you to study it and your club to ,.., make an intelligent and informed decision.

My intention when I took over The Memo eight months ago was to provide Conference with a publication comeasurate with it's size and stature, providing communication to and between members of Conference. With htis issue, I believe I've met that goal. I would really like to follow it up with an investigative piece about what happened Saturday night in Portland •••

Conference is a volunteer organization, and I've volunteered as much as I possibly could this year. But now I have to direct my energies somewhere else, because like Larry Ohlmstead, I'm building my pit crew from the ground up. Sheila Musgrove and I are expecting our second child the day of the Fall Meeting. The Memo will need a new Editor nexc year. If you have the skills and want to do the job, Conference and The Memo need youl If you are this person, please contact me or Bill Root. Even if The Memo isn't for you, but you want to contribute to Conference, give Bill a call. With your able and willing assistance, ICSCC can continue it's excellent performance as an amateur sports car racing organization.
