The Visitor A publication of Morningside Lutheran Church, Sioux City, Iowa

Vol. 44-No. 18 September 24, 2013

Although my family settled in the US, a few distant relatives wound up in France. Last month a few of them came to

the states to visit. They stayed with family in Des Moines, whom I didn’t think did a good enough job showing them

the sights. Nobody took time off work and the big plan was to rent a pontoon on “Red Rock Lake. Those of you who

know me know that I don’t need much of an excuse to go places, so it was Tom to the rescue. I took a few days off

work, picked them up and off we went! I had plans that included Chicago and many of the fun little sites between here

and there. Unfortunately-- or fortunately, as the case may be-my family decided to get on the ball. I had to cut my

tour short as other relatives started making plans. All of a sudden, I had time off, a SUV rental, a list of places I could

take my European relatives . . . and I was alone.

I do travel alone quite a bit, so I went ahead with my plans. I was in Des Moines, and there’s

not much I haven’t seen been here and there, but I had not ever been to the covered bridges in

Madison County. Now those covered bridges are miles apart, often on fairly isolated stretches

of gravel roads, and let me tell you, on a weekday, there is NOBODY out there. I mean, I was

all alone, in the middle of the cornfields. Usually, travel pictures have all the companions in

them or are taken by one member of the group. If I travel by myself, I ask other tourists to take

my picture. I often strike up conversations with these people. It’s fun. I meet many interesting people that way. But

out in the middle of Madison County, I was ALL alone, so I took this picture of myself at one of the bridges.

I have several of these in front of different bridges, and when my family saw them, they

laughed . . . Why? Apparently, I don’t look very happy. I have a series of “frowny faces”. To

get myself and the whole bridge in the shot, sometimes I am just a giant head in the foreground,

like this. I am frowning in this one, too. “Well,” I said, “that’s what happens when there’s no

one with you to take your picture.”

There’s nothing wrong with being alone. We should all be able to be comfortable by ourselves, but we must

remember that God designed his church as a community of believers. We are meant to be together with others from

our Christian community. To be isolated from that community, to travel life’s path alone, robs us of the joy of being

together with our fellow believers and our lives become a series of “frowny face” moments rather than celebrations of

good times at interesting places with the people we love.

This week, let’s make sure that we’re staying connected to the community of believers and inviting those who might

be traveling alone to join us. Nobody’s life should be a series of “frowny face” moments.

~Pastor Tom~

It is time for the 2013 Crop Hunger Walk Last year Morningside Lutheran raised $10,000, the

most by any church in Iowa, and won the first annual Crop Hunger Bowl challenge. MLC was also

19th in the nation in Crop Walk support. What a fantastic display of generosity toward the hungry

locally and around the world. Please support Crop again this year. Please stop by the table in the

Narthex between now and October 20th, the day of the walk, and sign up to walk or donate to a

walker. Last year we helped a lot of hungry people, let’s do it again this year.

the Sing-A-Long. Anyone who enjoys

singing is welcome to join us. Refresh-

ments are served.

world.

WIGS: will be held October 9th at 11:45 in the gym.

Please make your reservations by October 4th, by calling

Jacky Ross 276-3322 or Leila Agee @ 276-1072.

Volunteer: A volunteer to drive the Van every 4th or 5th

Sunday mornings. With enough van drivers you would

drive once every fifth Sunday. Prayerfully consider help-

ing out with this valuable ministry. It gives people with

no mode of transportation a chance to attend our worship

services.

I just want to take this opportunity to thank all of you for

your leadership in making the Convoy of Hope event so

successful. It was certainly my pleasure to see how your

hard work resulted in helping many Siouxlanders have a

little hope in their lives because of your commitment. I

am somewhat embarrassed by the compliments I received

because in reality an elected official that would not help

an organization like Convoy of Hope should really ques-

tion whether they should hold office. Anytime organiza-

tions like this want to help our citizens in the manner you

did, elected officials should do whatever they need to do

to make it happen. I am honored to have been part of the

process and look forward to working with each of you in

the future. I especially want to thank all the Pastors who

put their denominational differences aside and worked

together in one Spirit to show the compassionate side of

the church that our people need to see. Thanks again for a

job well done. ~Bob Scott~

I would like to thank Evelyn Nelson for her prayers and

staying in touch with me. ~Jean Olsen~

Sunnyside Neighborhood Fellowship will meet for

their annual potluck supper on Sunday, October 13th at

6:00 p.m. in the Kitchen Lounge.

2014 TRAVEL TO THE HOLY LAND: April 29 to

May 8, 2014, we will travel to the Holy Land and walk

where Jesus walked. From Bethlehem where Jesus was

born to Nazareth and Galilee where Jesus grew up. We

are making this trip more affordable with a special offer.

The price of the trip will be $3899. Contact Pastor Tom

or Pastor Paul for more information.

"The Living Room" By Robert Whitlow

Amy Clarke is a new author beginning on her third novel.

She works as a legal secretary and juggles that with her

family’s needs. She has a secret….when she dreams.. she

travels to a holy place which she calls the “Living Room.”

Sometimes she gets inspiration for her novels, but when

they hold unusual scenes of doom, she isn’t sure if she

should reveal these dreams. Will telling them help or

cause problems? (Find it in F-800-WHI)

Worship.

Media Training: Are you interested in learning how to help with the soundboard, computer or camera? A training session will be held on September 29th at 12:15 p.m. Many people are needed during worship services to make them go smoothly. It would be beneficial to have several people trained so no one has to make a weekly commitment. Join us for lunch and see how easy it is to learn the many facets of our media.

Hospitality Training: A training session will be held October 13th at 12:15 for current ushers, greeters, and anyone interested in serving in this ministry. Join us for lunch and fellowship. To make planning much easier, it would help if you would RSVP to the church office.
