    Shalom to 2018,

It is an honor and privilege to be elected President of Temple Anshei Shalom. I thank the 2017 Board for helping me learn the history and traditions of this Temple. A special thank you to Fran Goldman as we spent many hours together discussing the inner workings of the congregation. Built on the foundation of those who came before and with the help of Rabbi Adler, Cantor Beleniski, the past Presidents and the 2018 Board, we are looking forward to a year of growth and involvement. Having been President of another Temple for two years, I bring some experience to the position. Some of the challenges I see for me here are dealing with a larger membership, staff, activities and classes: raising money and membership; and getting more members involved. Your attendance at services and participation in our events are necessary for TAS to have a successful year. I welcome your ideas and comments to make the Temple the best it can be. Please call the Temple office and leave a message or leave a note in my mailbox and I will get back to you as soon as possible. In addition to our regular programs, please join us for the following special events: During the service on Friday night, January 19th, we will be installing the 2018 Officers and Board. We will also be welcoming new members. Sisterhood Shabbat will be January 27th. Sunday, January 28th, is the Sol Zim concert. See you in Temple Kol Tov

Thoughts On Jerusalem While Jerusalem, by definition, is known as the city of peace, unfortunately, throughout the past 3,030 years, there have been over 100 battles fought over it. Now a new battle has been waged over Jerusalem, pitting most of the world in opposition to the simple idea, and for me, the irrefutable fact, that Jerusalem is the capital of Israel. In response to the assertion that the approximately 160 nations comprising the United Nations can’t be wrong, and the United States Congress and President can’t be right, I offer the following: According to Ambassador Michael Oren, American policy during the past 70 years has been illogical and prejudicial to Jews. From 1947 to 1967 the United States did not recognize West Jerusalem as Israel’s capital because they signed on to the Partition Resolution of 1947 recognizing Jerusalem as an International City. Even though following the declaration of statehood in May 1948, the Arab neighbors of the newly created state attempted to destroy it, Israel triumphed and captured the western portion of Jerusalem, soon making it Israel’s capital. The holy sights were all in Jordanian East Jerusalem. During those 19 years, Jews were forbidden to visit the Western Wall, Mount of Olives or any place in that formerly Jewish majority holy city. In June of 1967, Israel was once again attacked and face annihilation. This time Israel captured the eastern portion of Jerusalem and made the reunited city the capital of Israel. From 1967 to 1993, the United States did not accept united Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, presumably because the status of that city would be the result of negotiations with Jordan and following the Oslo Accords, America did not recognize Jerusalem pending negotiations with the Palestinians. Furthermore, Arabs could live and build anywhere in that city, but Jews would be in violation of International law to even place a brick upon an existing brick in any neighborhood of East Jerusalem, let alone live there. Then in 1995, the Senate recognized in a 90-0 vote that Jerusalem is in fact the capital of Israel. In December of 2017, the President affirmed that recognition and announced that the embassy would be relocated there. Currently, there is not a single embassy in Israel’s capital.

SHALOM: As I begin this article for the January 2018 Kol – I cannot believe that I have been President of the Temple Anshei Shalom Sisterhood for one year. What a year it has been! I want to thank Linda Cooper and Irene Marks, of blessed memory, for having the confidence in me and asking that I assume the role of President. The Board of Directors of the Sisterhood welcomed me and gave me their support, encouragement and a few lessons along the way. Fran Goldman was a great support for me and for the Sisterhood. We have had a busy and wonderful year and when I look at our plans for 2018 – we will be even busier. For those of you who are looking for a way to participate in making our Sisterhood and our Temple the best around – let me know – we will find a spot for you. It is so important for some of our members to step forward and help us lead the Sisterhood. Also – let me know how we can continue to improve the Sisterhood. I want to thank Lorraine Epstien and Linda Kaplan for their sponsorship of the December Program in honor of their December birthdays. I hope many of you were there for our honoring of Millie Grant at our December meeting. She is an outstanding member of Sisterhood. Millie has been our Vice-President of

    SisterhoodJane Wechsler

Fundraising and she is the driving force behind our ability to help financially support the Temple. We love you Millie! Now we just have to figure out how to clone her and there will be no stopping us. Since the membership invoices were mailed – I have received a lot of questions about the “why” of the increase. As I mentioned previously, the Board wants to continue to bring our breakfast programs free of charge to our members. This necessitates increasing our dues. January will be a busy month for us – January 11th will be our Sisterhood Brunch and Fashion Show. In addition to the omelet station we will have fruit, bagels, bialys, tuna, danish. And of course our very own models. January 15th will be our general membership meeting featuring singer Ashley Cooper. Wonderful voice plus a spectacular dancer! January 30th and Feb 27th – trips to Jewish Museum and Cuban Synagogue. January 31st Tu B’Shevat Seder Coming up – More bingo, a trip to the Weiner Ceramic Museum and in March a trip to Gulfstream.

As you can see, we have a variety of activities – come join us!

Many view this decision as a provocative act, rewarding Israel without demanding anything from her, or tilting American policy in favor of Israel, rather than allowing her to be an impartial broker of the Israel-Palestinian dispute; or as a poorly thought-out decision needlessly inflaming Arab violence and causing a harsh reaction in the global community; or killing any hope for a peaceful resolution to this long standing crisis. Michael Oren strongly disagrees. He sees the decision of our country as a clear signal, letting the Palestinians know that there is a price for leaving the negotiation table, that time is not on their side, and that the U.S.courageously stands as a true friend of Israel.

Furthermore, instead of a tense stand-off regarding the status of Jerusalem, that issue is finally off the table and has become a resolved matter. Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and other Arab nations have. in recent months, drawn closer to Israel. May the day soon come, when the Palestinian people will earnestly pursue peace and may Jerusalem, Israel’s capital, and Judaism’s heart and soul, see a new era of compassion, justice and brotherhood for Jews, Muslims, and Christians in the place sacred to them all. May 2018 bring health and happiness to us all and peace to Jerusalem.

Shalom Chaverim. I am happy to say that this past year your ritual committee completed all its tasks, and in spite of hurricane Irma, illness to both Cantor Beliniski, and me we made it through the High Holidays. Many thanks to Andrew Greenberg who plowed through even though he too was ill, Cantor Sheini, Saul Rubinstein, and Cantor Shelishi Judi Koles, as well as Rabbi Adler and the staff, for leading us through. We culminated the holidays with Simchat Torah when we honored both Janette Kanfer our Chala Bereishit, and Dr. Joseph Starr our Chatan Torah. We moved closer to real Egalitarianism. We now accept and welcome Bat Kohane and Bat Levi to the Bima. We are also requesting that all women who are called to the Bima wear a head covering. Soon we hope that all people who are called to the Bima will accept all the obligations there regardless of sex, which means not only a head cover but also a Tallit. Having all the rights that men have is half of the equation. The other half is having the same obligations as the men have. When I assign Aliyote, I will try to remember to remind those chosen of policy that was actually in effect since we first became egalitarian. As I write this we are not yet celebrating Hanukkah, but I hope as you read it you will have had a joyous holiday. We now look forward to a joyous Purim.Shalom Chaverim

My Dear Fellow Congregants: Greetings from the 2018 edition of the TAS Men’s Club. Before I proceed to tell you a little bit of what we have in store for 2018, I would like to thank Irving Friedman for serving as President of the Men’s Club and for doing a good job in a very difficult position. We also wish Irving a speedy recovery from his shoulder accident and look forward to having his sense of humor and his ever ready smile back in our midst. I would also like to thank our outgoing Board members for their selfless devotion to our Club and to TAS. As we move forward into 2018, we have several programs under discussion and look forward to presenting a variety of programs that will appeal to our fellow congregants. In addition to a new slate of officers, we also want to welcome two new additions to our Board. The names of our Officers and Board members will be revealed in our next column; meanwhile we still have openings for 2 additional Board members. So if you want to volunteer for a worthwhile cause that doesn’t take much of your time, please see me or Fred Wechsler, who is chairing our membership committee with Bill Herman. All our Temple male members will receive a letter and application to continue (if current members) or to join the Men’s Club. What greater “mitzvah” is there to join a Temple affiliate that will contribute to the Temple’s financial growth and well-being? We would be pleased to welcome new members to move our Club forward and help us grow in 2018. Our January 14th program will feature Mitchel Abramowitz presenting “Origins – Part 2.” If you were there for Part 1, you already know what a knowledgeable speaker Mitchel is. We have our Men’s Club Shabbat in February. Any Men’s Club member, who wants an Aliyah, please contact Solomon Rosen at (561) 381-0091. We are also working with a Sisterhood committee to co-sponsor a Lag B’Omer picnic. This will be held indoors in our social hall. The Men’s Club is represented by Elliott Kempler, Fred Wechsler, and me. Be on the outlook for our annual raffle. You can expect our letter in your mail box soon, followed by the raffle tickets. Finally, we are now working on details of our annual “Man of the Year” luncheon. If you have any ideas for future programs, please let me know. All suggestions are welcome!

The Men’s Club now has the

2018“Save Around Palm Beach” savings book this year. The book contains more than

$5,000 in savings and it is only $22.

For more information, contact Jack Ozer at 561-865-0772.

Deadline for the February KOL is Monday, January 15th.

    FundraisingPaulette Ballin

First, as your new Fundraising Vice President, Happy 2018! By way of introduction, I have chaired the monthly entertainment series, Anshei After Dark, since its inception in 2015. The brainchild of Fran Goldman, this series wildly exceeded our initial goals for one reason: A team of TAS members who work really hard on everything from talent selection and marketing to ticket sales and event coordination. Along the way, we’ve all become good friends and we have so much fun. That’s why I want to announce today that I hereby install each of you—every TAS congregant—as members of the TAS Fundraising Committee. Why? Because you will make new friends and have a great time. And because you are crucial to keeping our beloved temple on strong financial footing. If not us, who, right? Don’t like to solicit donations? No problem. Volunteer a few mornings a month in the TAS ticket office where veterans like Florence Ull, Rita Erstein, Sema Weinberg, Millie Grant, Aunt Ruthie Kurtz and others are always happy to show newbies the ropes and make you feel part of the gang. Don’t like selling but want to be part of the action? Volunteer to place flyers in your neighborhood, or take tickets at the door, or help think up new fundraising events and programs, or be an “angel”, attending as many events as possible. Never been on a fundraising committee? Believe me, you know more than you think. Your experiences will give us fresh ideas—and help us avoid mistakes! You are our eyes, ears and voice in the community. Help us spread the word about upcoming events. Invite your friends. Post event flyers on your Facebook page. Word of mouth is the most powerful (and least expensive) marketing tool we have! Please tell me how you want to participate. My home phone is 561-270-3357; email is [email protected]. I sincerely want to hear from you!

    ANSHEI AFTER DARK

Headliner Lou Villano looks & sounds so much like Paul Anka, he earns standing ovations nationwide.

Sing along to Anka’s Diana, Lonely Boy, Steel Guitar, The Longest Day, Destiny, My Hometown & Puppy Love.

Plus hits he wrote for Buddy Holly, Tom Jones, Sinatra. Favorites from Frankie Avalon, Bobby Darin & Bobby Rydell.

This magnetic Brooklyn boy drew raves at Parker Playhouse, Boca Black Box, Dix Hills Performing Arts Center, NYC’s Laurie Beechman Theater, the Catskills and more. Come hear why!

“Lou Villano is probably the best Paul Anka Tribute Performer in the country!”—Reviewer Jay Shapiro
