We would like to thank everyone for coming out to the 2015 LV-HV Season Closing Match at the Ben Avery Shoot-ing Facility in Phoenix, AZ. We had a total of 24 competitors from 6 differ-ent states (AZ, CA, CO, IN, NM and TX) come out to compete at the last match of this season. Four of these competitors were junior shooters, the most we have had at one of our matches this season. We were excit-ed to see Matt Crowell come out for his first bench rest match. This was a great match to end the season, with beautiful weather and very little wind all weekend long. Saturday’s 100 yard matches start-ed off with Bob Brackney in the lead with a 0.2146” agg in the Light Var-mint class, then ended with Chuck Miller taking a commanding lead in the Heavy Varmint class with a 0.1802” agg. On Sunday Chuck fell behind due to crossfires during match 3 of the HV200. Chuck showed true sportsman-ship though, and didn’t let the penal-ties get to him, finishing match 4 and 5 as the small group winners. At the end of the day, Lou Murdica came in first with a 2-gun agg of 0.2630” with Ed Adams and Bob Brackney right behind him with 0.2676” and 0.2872”. Out of the four juniors, Garrett Atkins took top place with a 0.3378” agg. This match was especially exciting because it was the last one in the Iron-man Agg. The Ironman Agg combines the shooters six best two-day aggs over the season (Oct-April), with hall of fame shooters having their own di-vision where they compete for a tro-phy. Everyone watched closely as the

top three competitors all came close to beating each other out for the iron-man. It came down to the very last day of the season as to who would end up taking home the trophy. In fact, the Ironman Agg was so close, that one small calculation mistake actually shifted around the top three spots. Upon returning to the shop, we quickly found our mistake and informed those that it affected. We are proud to announce that the Ironman Agg winner for the 2014-2015 season is Bob Brackney with an agg of 0.2598” over six different two-day competitions. That’s 120 matches! Right behind him was Chuck Miller with a 0.2616” agg and Larry White with a 0.2618” agg. An honorable mention goes to Tony DeBacco as well, he was the only junior shooter to at-tend enough matches to quality for the Ironman, and we were happy to have him here all season long. Hall of Fame shooters had their own division of the Ironman Agg. In the end, Gary Ocock took the trophy with a strong lead, achieving a 0.2448” agg over 120 matches. That is some great shooting on all their parts! Thank you to everyone who attended for making this match a great one to end the season! April 28, 2015 Grand Junction doesn’t get a lot of rain. In fact, it receives on average just over 9” per year. Much of it has to do with orographic lift, (I’ve always wanted to use that in a sentence*), but be that as it may, it appeared the entire annual rainfall for Grand Junc-tion was trying to pour down on this range this weekend. The beginning of the week the weather report looked great at 70’s. As the week progressed, the outlook was not as predicted. Friday’s practice wasn’t bad. It was cloudy and windy, (which is not good for load development). Hopefully Sat-urday’s forecast would be better. Saturday morning was light rain and mild winds until about noon. Not too bad. In the afternoon it was cloudy,

but not much wind. Hopefully Sunday would be better still. Saturday night and Sunday morning it was moderate to heavy rains. The ground was getting saturated and things were turning into a soggy, slogging mess. It rained con-tinuously until approximately noon. MUD and more mud! The gravel parking lot and road were no longer a safe haven for two wheel drive. The target crew truck got stuck in the muck and we had to rescue them in a 4-wheel drive truck and tow it back. Not a good idea. The target crew thought they were going to have to slog through 3-inch deep mud, but our range officer saved the day and lent his “modified” Jeep to use. Thank you Troy! At the end of the match he looked inside of his jeep

and had some misgivings. Oops.Setting flags was a real challenge. By the time you walked 10 yards, your feet were the size of a 16 inch pizza pan. Not fun. One thing the inclement weath-er didn’t seem to affect were the small groups. Larry White sent a .074 screamer sailing to the target in the LV100 and Cliff McNairy shot a .186 screamer at HV200, Larry White took the bull by the horns again with a .215 screamer at HV200 and Michael Beard shared some glory too with a .243 screamer at HV200. It was Paul Holland, however, who shot the small group of 0.291 for the yardage win at LV200 and Rodney Brown took small group honors for the HV100 with a 0.136. Nice shooting gentlemen!

July, 2015 Precision Rifleman 9 With that screamer, Larry White won the LV100; Jim Erickson won the LV200 and also the LV Grand. Rodney Brown won the HV100 and Cliff McNairy won the HV200, but Jim Erickson went on to win the HV Grand and ultimately the Two Gun. Nice shooting Jim! *Quip from Audrey Brown. Don’t blame Tom for my silliness.

Hill Country Shooters AssnNew Braunfels, Texas

May 2-3, 2015 Thirty-two contenders came to the Texas Hill Country to square off for the 22nd annual Bluebonnet and 1st half of the Texas State Two Gun. It was quite a match to remember, as a me-morial to our dear friend and fellow shooter, Howard Dietz was planned in true texas style. Howard’s ashes were shot out of a cannon over the family’s private range and a toast of Abelour scotch (Howard’s favorite) was done held his memory. The weather was sunny but breezy, which provided cool temps in the mornings and warm afternoons. Satur-day Larry Baggett won the LV100 with Mike Bryant coming out on top in the SP100 in the afternoon. Darryl Whit-man bested his brother Kris and ev-eryone else for LV100 small group and Mike Bryant came through with the SP100 small group. Sunday morning the term “breezy” might have been considered some-what mild for the conditions. The wind was not friendly to the shooters. They faced a headwind rapidly switch-ing from quartering left to right. This

continued through both 200 yard aggs. Sir Charles came through with a .2449 for LV200 and Mike Bryant con-tinued his great shooting in SP200 with a .2827 win. John Horn took small group for LV200 and Mike Conry took the SP200 small group. Larry Baggett won the LV Grand and Mike Bryant took the SP Grand, but in the end it was Sir Charles Hucke-ba who continued his winning ways capturing the Two Gun Grand with a .2688 agg with second to Mike Bryant with .2697. Congratulations Sir Charles & Mike Bryant. As always our Range Master Virgil Howarth did an outstanding job calling the match and keeping it mov-ing at a regular pace. Thanks Virg! Thanks to everyone for participating, especially those who drove a great distance to be here. Not to be left out are the Boy Scouts of Troop # 382 from New Braunfels, TX, who ran tar-gets, moved frames and equipment in addition to furnishing a great BBQ and sausage lunch on Saturday and Sunday. Finally, last but not least, a special thank you to Ms. Sammye Dietz for allowing us to use the range for the event. The Bluebonnet would not be possible without her support.

Stay tuned for the 2nd half of the Texas State Championship which is held at Seymour Stool Shooters where the Unlimited and Heavy Varmint guns will be contested. Shooters from left are Tim Oltersdorf, Cody Engel, John Horn, Darryl Whit-man, Charles Huckeba, Larry Baggett, Dickie Pustejovsky. Kneeling are Mike Bryant and Mike Conry.

Springville, Utah Good weather, good friends and good times were had at our inaugu-ral 2015 tournament. This was the first leg of the Utah State Champi-onship. Good weather; however, is no guarantee for good conditions as we soon found out. No screamers or teen aggregates were posted in the light, swirling conditions. Many be-lieve the raised east berm has made the up-canyon winds erratic and the constant subtle flag changes unpre-dictable. From personal experience and observation, I do know that it contributes to volumes of cursing! Norm Cox found a way to handle the conditions and won the SP-100 Saturday morning with a .2330 agg. Rod Brown was second with a .2600 agg and Lowell Frei was third with a .2628. Meanwhile, only seven of the twenty-eight shooters had aggs in the twos. Randy Higgs had the small group for the yardage; a .157. The pizza lunch spiced up Dave Woodward and his rail as he took charge of the UNL-100 Saturday af-ternoon winning with a .3338 agg. Dana Andrus was second with .3418 and Larry White held third with a .3448 agg. To the delight of Joe Olas, his granddaughter, Shania Peterson, competing in her first tournament, had the small group for the yardage. A very nice .248. Continuing where he left off Satur-day afternoon, Dave Woodward son

the UNL-200 Sunday morning with a .3141 agg. Rod Brown was second with a .3250 agg and Dana Andrus was third with a .3527 agg. It was the same line-up that won the UNL Grand Aggregate. Dave Woodward was first with a .3239, Rod Brown second with .3423 and Dana Andrus was third with .3473. Todd Jensen had the yardage small group; a clean .409. Sunday afternoon Rod Brown put on a convincing performance winning the SP-200, the Sporter Grand and the Two Gun Championship. Rod’s 200 yard agg was .3414 followed by Jim Erickson in second with .3716 and Joe Olas in third wiht .3759. Once again, Joe Olas’ granddaugh-ter, Shania Peterson shot the small group for the yardage; a nice. 363. A hearty congratulations to Shania on her two 200-yard small groups and welcome to benchrest compe-tition...now stop beating up on the men! Rod Brown’s Sporter Grand was .3007 followed by Lowell Frei in sec-ond with .3237 and Jim Erickson in third with .3520. The Utah State Two Gun Champion is Rod Brown with a winning agg of .3215. Second place is Dana Andrus with .3554 and Marty Childers is third on his first visit to our Spring-ville range with a .3598 aggregate. Congratulations to the winners and to all who competed this weekend. We had shooters from six states

competing and we really appreciate your attendance and look forward to seeing you in August for the next and final leg of the Utah State Champi-onship. These Springville tournaments would not happen without the dedi-cated effort and labors of Dave Tun-bridge. A heartfelt “Thank You” to Dave and his target and range crew; Shane, Marsha, Misty and Justin. They do an excellent job of running an efficient tournament. Also, a big “shout-out” to Joe Olas for assisting Dave in putting on the tournaments. Joe has been an inte-gral part of putting on our matches since their beginning. It was Joe’s in-fluence and efforts that got Central Utah Bench Rest Club up and run-ning as the first Range Officer. Many thanks Joe for your years of service.

The floating design of our neck turner and the universal floating case driver allows the case mouth (bore) to run on the arbor absolutely concentric. Therefore allowing O.D. to be turned concentric with I.D. The tail-stock creates a horizontal inline support for the base of the case. Also allows the operator to keep both hands on the power screw driver or drill. This makes it very easy to control feed rate of the cutting operation, generating a very fine turned finish. Case holder drivers are designed to be the most gentle driver, yet providing an adequate hold. DOES NOT DRIVE OFF THE PRIMER POCKET NO PRIMER POCKET OR CASE DAMAGE. Driver shaft is hexed to use power screw driver or drill. 17cal. Fireball to a .416 Rigby. Also 50cal.

The Tacoma Rifle & Revolver Club kicked off the 2015 Benchrest season by holding the Allen Bench Memorial Two Gun competition on the week-end of April 4th and 5th. Overall the weather was great, though mornings started out on the chilly side. Initially it seemed we might have a trigger pull-ing contest, but then, just before the range went hot, the breeze picked up and flags came alive. With mostly clear skies and afternoon temps climbing up into the high 50’s, it felt like summer had come early this year. Competition began with the LV100. Steve Kostanich took the initial lead, but Mustafa Bilal topped the board in the 2nd match and held it through the 3rd. Allen Tucker took the advantage in the 4th, but Steve showed his resilien-cy by coming back for the win (.2020). Allen held on for second place (.2184) and Mustafa took third (.2228). Former Range Manager turned full time com-petitor, Jim Silverton shot the small group at .123”. In the afternoon’s LV200, Jeff Lewis shot smallest through the first 3 match-es. Rick Graham then took control and held on for the win (.2064). Jeff grabbed second place (.2646) and Al-len Tucker took third (.2745). Rick also shot the small group at .225”. By the end of the first day, Rick Graham’s ef-forts had earned him the LV Grand win (.2241), with Allen Tucker taking sec-ond and Jeff Lewis finishing third. Sunday morning wasn’t quite as cool,

and it wasn’t long before we were en-joying another beautiful day. In the HV200, Mustafa Bilal led through the first two matches. Larry Boers then found the spotlight, taking the lead and keeping it for the win (.2122). Second place went to Dan Kjelland (.2573) and third place to Mustafa Bilal (.2787). Larry Boers easily claimed the small group with his screamer .125” in the 3rd match. By the time the HV100 started, mirage had become an issue. John Parrish took the initial lead but Larry Boers took control again in the 2nd match and ran up an impressive win (.1864). John Parrish placed second and Bob Bold-

man took third. Mustafa Bilal shot the small group at .122”. When the day’s shooting was done Larry Boers was the HV Grand winner (.1993), with Mustafa Bilal in second, and Mark Walker taking third. With all the results tallied, it was no surprise to see Larry Boers win-ning the 2015 Allen Bench Memorial 2 Gun (.2351). Allen Tucker took second place (.2784) and Mustafa Bilal finished third (.2914). Congratulations to all the shooters who could make it to our first competition of the year!

Benchrest Bio:Rick Debick

A retired teacher of 31 years and op-erating my own firearms reblueing and repair shop for nearly 50 years I now devote most of my shooting activities to benchrest competitions. Prior to precision benchrest I was ac-tive in handgun silhouette and trap. In 2004 the opportunity to attend a benchrest workshop and school at the Canastota club near Syracuse, New York presented itself. Desiring to de-velop a skill in a new shooting disci-pline, I attended the event, which proved to be quite informative as well as contagious. Four new shooters were assigned a coach for the weekend, who, to our good fortune, turned out to be Greg Walley. Bill Duffy of Louisiana was in our group and our paths have since crossed at several Super Shoots. I was probably reloading and shooting before Greg was born, but not to the degree required for the bench game. He certainly shed light on the require-ments needed to produce accurate

ammo and the re-quired equipment needed to com-pete. Greg was also instrumental in answering my many questions as the years pro-gressed. This also proves that old

dogs can learn new tricks from young-er ones! Dave Bruno of Pennsylvania is another “youngster” that has been an asset in my endeavor to improve. There were others who have helped as well but are too numerous to list here. But, of course, I can’t leave out Jack Neary. While at the school in New York, I was lucky enough to win a free cham-bering job that was donated by Herb Coates (HC Precision). Not owning a benchrest rifle, that free chambering job cost me over $2,000.00 before I could fire a shot. Thanks a lot, Herb! Attending many matches since 2004, and even winning a few, numerous people have made returning to these competitions worthwhile.

Website Access Some of you have noticed the “Login/Register” verbiage on the nbrsa.org website and have inquired about this. At the pres-ent time, access is unrestricted to the website, so anyone and everyone can look at our sched-uled matches, read regional blogs, check out world record status and peruse our past Pre-cision Rifleman magazine issues. If this changes, the members will be notified beforehand.

Dick Lockwood Bill Brawand notified the of-fice that our good friend and fellow long-time shooter, Dick Lockwood from Kane, Pennsyl-vania passed away at his home May 3, 2015. He was a shooter since the 1960’s and was a great gunsmith and machinist before his retirement. He is survived by his wife Judy, daughter Loretta, two sisters, two grandchildren, a great grand-daughter as well as a great-great grand-daughter. Dick was 76 at the time of his passing. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends. May he rest in peace.

New Novel by Fellow Shooter,

Jacob Gottfredson Fellow shooter Jacob Gottfred-son has released a new novel en-titled, “Dancing In The Jungle” . It’s a story about a young man born and raised in a small com-munity in the Rocky Mountains. Just weeks before he is to be married, his fiancee gives the ring back. His life is destroyed and he begins a trek through the

back doors of America’s forgot-ten, bumming his way across the country. Finally, at his wits end, he joins the Army and becomes a US Special Forces Green Be-ret. He ends up training Laotian and Hmong tribesmen as com-mandos accompanying them into the jungles of Laos and North Vietnam. Jacob’s novel is available in paperback and kindle versions from amazon.com. Congratula-tions Jacob!

US Benchrest Hall of Fame Correction

I received the following email and wanted to share it for clari-fication purposes. “I noticed on page 30 of the May 2015 issue that the Group Hall of Fame points thru 2014 Nationals is listed under the heading NBRSA Group Hall of Fame. While it was the NBRSA Group Hall of Fame until 30 years ago, HOF points could henceforth from 1985 be earned from both NBRSA and IBS, and the name was subsequently changed to

the United States Benchrest Hall of Fame. From the Hall of Fame web-page this statement appears:“And in 1985 winners of similar events of the IBS Nationals were appropriately included with the NBRSA inductees. Today, the United States Ben-chrest Hall of Fame is adminis-tered by 1993 inductee Rex Re-neau.” Another item that has me wondering for the past half-doz-en years is the spelling of Jack Deming’s name on the list. Jack is terminally ill at this time, and I have asked that his name be spelled correctly before his demise. On the list it is spelled Demming, whereas his name has but one “m”. Perhaps Rex could have it corrected.”

Editor’s Response: First and most important, I’m sorry to hear of Jack’s condition. I send he and his family my thoughts and prayers. The error in spelling is mine. Jack’s name is correctly spelled on the website. I apologize for my oversight and appreciate your valued input. Thank you for making our magazine the best it can be.

Bill Hull A long time shooter in the Gulf Coast region of the NBRSA passed away May 9, 2015. His services were May 12. Bill worked as a machinist for Shilen Rifles, Inc. from 1984 until 2012. His son, Wade, is the present owner of Shilen, Inc. We are diminished.

Ira Emus’ Magazines Member Ira Emus has a com-plete set of NBRSA magazines available. If interested, email him at [email protected].
