Blessed Easter Greetings

For me, holiday preparations usually begin in thekitchen. I love to bake and cake decorating hasalways infatuated me. My sister is ever so much bet-ter than I. She’s more patient. But that doesn’t stopme from trying and I still love to get out the appro-priate cookie cutters for sugar cookies and family tra-

dition requires a lamb-shaped cakewith cocoanut wool.

I’ve tried my hand at all the dif-ferent colors of dyed eggs in mytime. However, with precious little time on mycurrent calendar (with all the places to go,other things to do and people to see) I haveopted to let the grandchildren do the hon-ors. Of course, that can get quite messy. So

the staff at The Weekender went searching for easier ideas onthe subject. Take a look at page 21 to review our choices fornew egg decorating traditions. Also, on page 14 are some freshideas for Easter desserts. I may just give up on the lamb cake.It never did want to sit up straight anyway. If you prefer fore-going all the fuss and simply want to go buy the chocolate forthe occasion, see page 16 to find out if you fit into the tradi-tional buying habits list.

This month’s issue contains several ideas of places to go forthe Easter holiday. If you hold to tradition, we’d like to hearabout. As spring begins to warmup the greater SouthBend area, you can feelthe earth coming to life.

Bird songs call us outdoors to walkunder budding trees. Hop on yourbike and tour our scenic riverbanks.Grab your ball cap and head down toThe Cove for the season-opener. Orhave brunch with a bunny.

Celebrate the arrival of spring inDowntown South Bend at an EggStravaganza for all ages. Start with afamily buffet breakfast and greetPeter Rabbit. Then hop right into theexcitement of balloon bunnies, eggpainting, sack races, egg hunts, wagon rides and more!

The crack of the bat. The roar of the crowd. Those are the sounds of spring at The Cove. Graba hot dog and a bag of peanuts and join the SouthBend Silver Hawks for their Midwest BaseballLeague home opener. If you're lucky, you mightalso be able to catch a Silver vs. Gold exhibitiongame, with the Silver Hawks hosting the NotreDame Fighting Irish at Coveleski Stadium.

Speaking of Gold, spring in South Bend also fea-tures the annual Blue-Gold game. It's a sneak peekthat gives Notre Dame football fans a chance to seethe new lineup in action. The game also helps toraise scholarship money for the University.

Perhaps the best way to enjoy the spring weath-er is to get out on your bike. Bike the Bend is afamily-friendly bike ride in the cities of SouthBend and Mishawaka that restricts motorized traf-fic for the day and give the bikes priority. Travelalong the St. Joseph River, tour County Parks, tra-verse campuses and wave to the animals at thezoo. Then gather with other riders for a Post RideFestival.
