Right about now the packaged dormant bulbs are arriving at the garden centers. Among them will be one of my favorites: the easy-to-grow lilies. I add more every year and am still amazed at how quickly the establish themselves and multiply. No wonder I love them so much. The lilium segment of the larger liliacae family contains some of the showiest flowers to be found anywhere and many of the thousands of cultivars thrive in our northern climate including two of my favorites; Asiatic and Oriental Hybrids. Asiatic hybrids are the first of the lilies to flower in early summer. They are also the most cold tolerant of all lilium forms. Asiatics also mature and reproduce rapidly, making them a rewarding choice for those just starting to dabble in lily growing. Asiatics are available in reds, whites, pinks, oranges, and yellows of every shade. Some feature solid colored petals while others are ornately speckled. Asiatics are not strongly scented but come in a range of sizes from 2 to 5! To find fragrance, we must sniff out the Oriental lily hybrids. Although not quite as winter hardy as their Asiatic cousins, many Oriental varieties are hardy in zones 4 and 5; hardy enough to thrive in our area. Oriental lilies will produce some of the largest, showiest flowers that you could expect this side of the tropics. A sub-group of the Oriental lilies are the Imperial hybrids. Imperial lilies produce large, sometimes huge flowers on sturdy stems. The Imperial Gold strain, for instance, produces 5 to 7 fragrant flowers on plants up to 7 tall. Thats right, 7! Those who travel the tropics and return whining that we cant grow anything to compare should wake up and smell the lilies! All lilium varieties grow from bulbs. Youll start seeing them in garden centers in March. Theyll be offered bare-root in plastic bags. Shop for them early so you can pick out the fattest ones from the group offered. The fatter the bulb, the better the plant. Plant your lilies as soon as the ground has thawed. Choose a location that is in full sun and make sure its a location that doesnt puddle up after a heavy rain. Dig your holes about 3 times as deep as the bulb is tall. As usual, Ill insist that you add bone meal to the planting hole. After enjoying your lilies for 3 or 4 years, youll notice that youre getting more plants and flowers but they arent as tall as they used to be. This is a signal that theyre crowded and need to be dug and divided. This can be done in fall after frost or early spring when theyve just started to sprout from the soil (adding more bone meal of course). There are many more lilies than the two mentioned here. Theyre showy and very easy to grow making them a great choice for the novice or experienced gardener who wants to impress friends and neighbors. Another of my favorite bulbs available in packages this time of year are the irises. Irises generally flower early in the season so they really stand out as a harbinger of the warm days of summer to come. Like the lilies, irises are easy to grow and multiply quickly; attributes that make them welcome in my flowerbeds. The thousands of modern iris varieties are descendants of the approximately 150 species that are found growing naturally around the world. They grow from tuberous rootstock called rhizomes. In early spring (any day now) youll find them for sale in the garden center bare-root in plastic bags. When youre shopping for iris rhizomes, dont just look at the pretty picture on the package. Inspect the rhizomes through the bag. Feel them. They should be firm to the touch and show no signs of mold. Pick out the biggest and fattest of the bunch (a good argument for shopping early). The bigger the rhizome the better the better the flowers. If you cant plant them right away, just store them in a cool spot until the ground thaws. Bearded and Dwarf Bearded Irises are most commonly found in bare root offerings. The popular Bearded Irises come in almost any color combination imaginable. Theyll range in height from about 15 to 36. Mature Bearded Irises will have 3 to 5 flowers on each stem that opens in early spring. Dwarf Bearded Iris varieties grow to heights of no more than 8 or so. Bearded and Dwarf Bearded Irises prefer to be planted in full sun in soil thats been enriched with plenty of organic matter. The area should be well drained to avoid rotting rhizomes. Later in spring, Japanese and Siberian irises will appear in the garden center as potted perennial plants rather than bare-root rhizomes. Japanese Irises are some of the tallest Iris groups with some cultivars getting as tall as 4. Japanese irises can tolerate some light shade and perform best when planted in an area with damp acidic soil. Along a stream or a boggy pond bank would be a great spot for Japanese Irises. The easy-to-grow Siberian irises have been gaining in popularity. This is due to its ability to grow in locations that are drier than other irises prefer. Siberian Irises have narrower leaves and smaller flowers than other iris varieties. Theyll do best when planted in full sun or partial shade. Like other irises, Siberian Irises prefer acidic soil with lots of organic but are more forgiving of less-than-ideal conditions. Another iris will appear at the garden center late in spring in the display of plants for water gardening. Yellow Flag or Water Flag Irises grows to a height of about 3. The flowers of this moisture loving iris are bright yellow sometimes highlighted with purple veins. The bluish green leaves contrast nicely with the bright yellow flowers. Variegated cultivars are available that have yellow striped leaves in spring that gradually turn green as summer progresses. Yellow Flag Irises should be planted in organic-rich, damp areas. It is a bog plant that will do poorly if planted where it dries out at all. Irises mature quickly so, be ready to divide them every few years. A group of irises that is overgrown will form a ring as the original plants die out in the center. Dig these clumps up in early spring and divide by chopping into several smaller clumps and replant. Make sure to freshen up the soil with more organic matter before replanting. Irises as a group are one of my favorites. Theyre easy and prolific and, since they flower early in the season theyll chase those winter blues away long before we see signs of life from most of our garden plants. Give them a try; youll be glad you did. Thanks for the read.

    HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE

    CHILDREN WHO STUTTER

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stutter-ing is a frustrating and em-barrassing problem for mil-lions of people, but it can be especially tough on elemen-tary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-lan-guage pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stutter-ing. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about them-selves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stut-tering Foundation is avail-able free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutteringhelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

Princess Zelda - the hero mom! Zelda is a super soft and sweet girl that has been very busy rais-ing her three kittens over the past few months. Zelda was a fantastic momma, always grooming her babies and making sure they learned how to pounce and play.... Everybody is weaned now and Zelda is all ready for a home of her own she just cant wait to be an empty nester!! Zelda is a little shy at first- she likes some time to observe people before coming over for attention...if you

    Zelda

    Corrine

give her a little space all the sudden you will be her new best friend. Gentle head and ear scratches are her favorite. Zelda is a really beautiful muted tiger cat with mesmerizing thoughtful eyes and cute little white tipped toes. Zelda

gets very stressed out in the car carrier and at our adoption clinics so the best way to meet her would be to visit her at her foster family. Zelda is ~ 2 years

old, is spayed, up to date on her shots and negative for FIV/FeLV.

This sweet, very unique, female ginger tabby has her eye on you...shes shy but always look-ing for someone to pet her. Corrine is a really

lovely kitty that needs a special family with the patience to let her get to know them. Once you earn her trust you will have a steady bedtime companion and will know just how much she

loves to be petted when she arches up to you and flicks her tail. Corinne was abandoned with her siblings and had to fend for herself with her 4 brothers before she was rescued by HOPE. If you are looking for a cat that really needs saving and that rewarding feeling of gaining the trust of an animal thats not always had the best experiences with people then consid-er Corinne. Shes come a long way, is loving and sweet with her foster family who shes been with many months, and is ready to meet her new forever family. Do

you have a big enough heart to welcome in Corinne? We promise shes worth it if you just have a little patience. Corinne has a few favorite housemates - Crowley, Ace & Abbie, she gets along with all the other cats and also is fine with dogs.

Corinne is spayed, up to date on her shots and negative for FIV and FeLV.

    Telfair Puppes

These two were pulled from a high kill shelter into rescue. They are hound/terrier mix-

es about 10-12 weeks old. They have been vet check,

    wormed and first shots.

This sweet boy is 1.5yo. He has been an inside dog and the owners wanted to keep him outside because they thought he was so ugly. But he gets out under their fence because he is too small so

they gave him up to the kill shelter. He is utd on shots, he is neutered, crate trained,

housebroken and good with all ages of kids.

These babies were being given away free on Craigs list

and our rescuer contacted the person and convinced

her that they would be better off in rescue. They are pug/beagle mixes about 7 weeks old. These babies have been vet checked, wormed and

    first shots.

I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a re-minder that You are not forgotten. The Stars are given freely to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Veter-ans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. As much of the world slowly recovers from the far-reach-ing economic downturn that began in 2008, the In-ternational Monetary Fund has predicted a 3.2 percent growth for the global econ-omy in 2015.

Some countries, including the United States, have al-ready witnessed an uptick in industrial growth. But other nations are not seeing the same level of success. Slow growth and infl ation is plaguing areas of South America. Trade surpluses in Germany are likely to shrink in 2015. There is still steady growth in areas of Asia, but Chinas projected 7.1 percent growth, though high com-pared to other nations, is the countrys lowest in 15 years.

With regard to the American economy, job growth and more qualifi ed people re-turning to the marketplace continue to benefi t the

2015 INDUSTRY OUTLOOKeconomy. But uncertainty as to whether the Federal Reserve will begin to raise the federal funds rate in 2015 continues to loom over the American economy. The higher the federal funds rate, the more expensive it is to borrow money. Since the end of 2008, the federal funds rate has been unusu-ally low. The low rate was essentially an emergency measure in the wake of the fi nancial crisis, and its still an unknown if the countrys economy can survive with-out the low rate.

Forecasters are saying the demand side of the Ameri-can economy will have solid growth, but the supply side is still sketchy. Higher taxes and a loss of benefi ts to lower-income workers may impact the job market and overall economy.

But certain industries have emerged as the safest bets

for employment possibilities and success in 2015. A re-cent survey from researchers at Michigan State University found certain job sectors an-ticipate strong hiring growth of recent college graduates and others with industry ex-perience.

Growth in information ser-vices, which includes tele-communications, publish-ing, motion pictures, and broadcasting, is expected to surge. Finance and insurance remain strong and safe bets for employment as banks now will make up for cut-backs during the recession. Other strong employment contenders include manage-ment consulting, account-ing, law, computer design, and engineering services.

Health and wellness servic-es appear recession-proof as well. IBISWorld Industry Research notes pilates and yoga studios were highly re-sistant to the recession. With a predicted annual growth of 4.8 percent, these health and wellness industries are targeted for growth and in-creased success in 2015.

Pieces of the global eco-nomic puzzle are coming together while others are falling out of the mix, and it should be interesting to see how the world economy re-acts in the new year.

Few drivers will be fortu-nate enough to go their entire driving lives without encountering at least one fl at tire. Flat tires range from the inconvenient fl ats, which may interrupt a road trip or make drivers late for work or an appointment, to more dangerous blowouts, which can compromise the safety of drivers, their passengers and anyone else on the road when the tire gives out.

But as inconvenient or dan-gerous as fl ats or blowouts can be, they also can be pre-vented more often than not. Tires often produce warning signs that a fl at or blowout is about to emerge, so drivers who want to avoid such un-fortunate developments can inspect their tires for the fol-lowing signs.

Varying wear: Tires should exhibit the same type of wear. The wear on front tires and back tires may diff er, but one front tire should have the same amount of wear as the other and the same goes for the back tires. Un-even tread on tires indicates that the tire with more wear could be about to go out.

Worn tread: Even driv-ers who know little about cars can typically recognize when tire tread has worn down to the point where the tire is a safety risk. But driv-ers who are unsure can em-ploy the quarter test. Insert a quarter into the tread of the tire, with George Washing-tons head upright. If you can see the hairline of the United States fi rst president, then you need to replace the tire.

WARNING SIGNS A TIRE IS ABOUT TO GO

    FLAT

Perform this test on each of your vehicles four tires.

Low pressure: Drivers who do not routinely check their tire pressure are more likely to endure a fl at or blowout than those who regularly make sure their tires are at the manufacturer-recom-mended pressure, which can be found in a vehicle owners manual or by call-ing the tire manufacturer or visiting their website. An underinfl ated tire is under stress that can cause the tire to blowout. In addition, poorly infl ated tires force en-gines to work harder, which negatively aff ects a cars fuel effi ciency.

Vibration: A car that vi-brates excessively may do so because tires are damaged. Poor suspension is another cause of excessive vibra-tion. Whatever is behind a car that is vibrating, drivers should immediately take the car to their mechanic for an inspection.

Physical damage to the tire: Sometimes tires exhibit physical damage like bulges or cuts, and such signs could mean a fl at tire or blowout is just around the corner. Tires that exhibit such physical damage need to be replaced immediately.
