• GRANDFATHER • WALL • MANTEL • CUCKOO

I sometimes fi nd it amusing how our attitudes toward things change over time. I know we all look back at those pictures of us from the 70s, 60s and earlier and are amazed at the hairstyles and clothes we wore then. At the time, my generation thought we were the height of fashion with our big hair and bellbottoms. If you happen upon an old episode of Columbo on the tube, you’ll be amazed at how long men’s sideburns were. And then there were the bold, psychedelic patterns of the disco era. Now we simply look back at all this and wonder, “What were we thinking?”

I’m sure that a lot of this has to do with the fashion industry and its need to keep us moving along from one trend to the next to ensure that we’re all in a constant state of desire to be “trendy” and all caught up on the latest fashions. Skirt lengths fl oat up and down, men’s ties get wider and nar-rower as do lapels. The older one gets, the less one cares about these subtleties of fashion. Of course, when this happens, there’s always the danger of getting stuck in a fashion time warp and ending up as a middle aged balding guy with a ponytail and a penchant for wearing Hawaiian shirts. No, really, it can happen!

You might not realize it but the same thing happens with plants. Some plants are popular for awhile and then they are replaced with another. You can go on the internet and fi nd the “Perennial of the Year” and “Annual of the Year” for this and past years. Sometimes it is the color that makes the plant popular and sometimes it’s because the plant is a newly bred variety. Sometimes, just as in the fashion world, plants that were popular in the past enjoy a revival as new gardeners rediscover plants that their grandparents loved.

There’s one plant though, that has suffered a fall from grace so complete that few of us are even aware that it was once one of the most well thought of plants on the planet. The plant I’m refer-ring to is the ubiquitous dandelion.

Like most of you, I loathe them in my lawn. I want my lawn to be green…not green and yellow or green and white. I’ll mow off the fl owers and mow off the seed pods and even threaten to kill them with weed killer. Like most of you, I’m not a big fan of dandelions. I have a vague recollection of tasting dandelion wine that some older relative used to make. I also recall not being too impressed. I know that they sell the leaves in the grocery stores now. That’s not something that I think we had back in the 70s. So, what’s up with these weeds?

It might surprise you to know that, at one time, there was NOT ONE dandelion growing on the entire continent of North America. Even knowing that, you’d probably assume that it was just an unfortunate accident that they’re here…they must have gotten here along with another plant or as a seed stuck to someone’s shoe.

Actually, the dandelion, that scourge of our lawns that we detest so much, was brought here by European colonists intentionally. In fact, more than one group of colonists brought it with them to their new homes in America. Germans are known to have brought it with them and Spanish colonists introduced dandelions into Mexico including what is now the American southwest. The reason they made a point of bringing dandelion seed to the New World is because they depended on it to keep them healthy. The dandelion, which is actually a plant native to Asia, has a long history as a benefi cial and medicinal plant. In China, it is mentioned in herbal texts as early as the 7th century. We can assume that it was used medicinally in China even earlier. In Wales, it is mentioned in the writing of physi-cians during the 1200s. A French physician gave us the name dandelion when he called them ‘dent de lion’ or ’teeth of the lion’ describing the ragged shape of the leaf. Other common names for the dandelion have been: Blowball, Cankerwort, Swine Snout, Wild Endive, Sin in the Grass and another French name, pis-en-lit which translates as “wets the bed”. This last name describes the dandelion’s ability as a diuretic. The Latin name for the dandelion is Taraxacum offi cinale which can be translated as ‘disorder remedy’.

Dandelion leaves are a wonderful source of vitamin A as well as potassium, calcium, phos-phorus and iron. Common knowledge of our ancestors was that the various parts of the dandelion can be used to treat urinary tract infections, abscesses, eczema, gout, boils, stomach aches and even snakebite. It has also been used to treat high blood pressure and as a liver purifi er. The white sap in the fl ower’s stem has even been suggested as a cure for warts. The list goes on and on. I’m certainly not suggesting that you use dandelions medicinally but it makes for interesting reading. One would think that, since there are references to the benefi t of dandelions about as far back in history as history goes, there might be something to all this. One thing is for sure, our ancestors were not going to the New World without the seeds of their favorite cure. It is no wonder that they are everywhere. We may have completely lost sight of the virtues of the lowly dandelion but they are still with us nonetheless.

I’ll have to admit that tender young dandelion greens sometimes make it into the salads at my house. They are a little bitter but, when mixed with all the other greens, they’re pretty good. For some, it is an acquired taste. We once served some dinner guests salad with dandelion greens in it without their knowledge. They enjoyed the salad but called the next day to ask us, “What was in that salad anyway?” I won’t go into detail. Suffi ce it to say, THEY noticed the effect dandelions can have on the digestive system! Thanks for the read.

Sunraes Tanning Salon is owned and operated by Kelly Carney at 714 Saratoga Rd (Rt. 50) in Burnt Hills. Kelly opened Sunraes Tanning Salon on January 17th of this year, but, the process started a couple of years earlier, when Kelly was looking for a place to tan in the Burnt Hills area. Kelly noticed the choices were limited and realized that a tanning salon in Burnt Hills was a good business opportunity.

Sunraes currently has 8 tanning units (5 bed units, 2 stand-up units and 1 facial unit). The units range from level 1 to a level 5, depending on what the customer desires. Sunraes also offers a full line of indoor tanning lotions that significantly enhance and protect the tanning process, teeth whitening and protective eyewear.

Sunraes Tanning Salon strives to offer a relaxing “spa” type experience through décor, music and the friendly service it offers. Cleanliness, tanning education and tanning bed/lamp maintenance are Sunraes business practices that guarantee value for your tan-ning experience.

Currently, Kelly and her husband Shawn are the only two that work and operate the salon. Hopefully, as business grows so will the need for expanded hours and additional help.

Kelly is educated and understands safe tanning. Tanning, like any exposure to UV rays needs to be monitored. Moderate exposure UV light has benefits both mentally and physically, especially in a controlled environment.Let Sunraes help give you a much needed break in your hectic week, come in an relax with us.

Sunraes is open Monday-Thursday 10am-7pm; Friday 10am-6pm; Saturday 9am-3pm; Sunday 9am-2pm Kelly Carney - Owner

EYES ON HEALTH

What is Conjunctivitis? Conjunctivitis is an infl ammation of the conjunctiva, a thin, transparent layer covering the surface of the inner eyelid and a portion of the front of the eye. Th is condition appears in many forms and aff ects people of all ages.

What causes Conjunctivitis? Th e three main types of conjunctivitis are infectious, allergic and chemical. Th e infectious form, commonly known as “pink eye” is caused by a contagious virus or bacteria.Th e body’s allergies to pollen, cosmetics, animals or fabrics oft en bring on allergic conjunctivitis. And irritants like air pollution, noxious fumes and chlorine in swimming pools may produce the chemical form.

What are signs/symptoms of Conjunctivitis? Th e common signs and symptoms of conjunctivitis are red eyes, infl amed inner eyelids, watery eyes, blurred vision and a sandy or scratchy feeling in the eyes. With the infectious form, there may be a watery or pus-like discharge around the eyelids.

The Two Worlds of Major Mordecai MyersSCHENECTADY – Major Mordecai Myers lived the most compelling life of any Jewish-American of his day. Born to impoverished immigrant parents, he spent his formative years (1776-1783) in New York City and, as a child of Loyalists dur-ing the Revolution, four years (1783-87) in the Nova Scotian wilderness. Upon the family’s return to New York City in 1787, Myers embarked on several careers: military service; state poli-tics; local politics; national politics; and election as New York State’s Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Freemasons Along the way, Myers made and lost two fortunes, outlived his wife and 6 of his 10 children, and became the great-great-grandfa-ther of Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Robert Lowell. The program will be held at 2pm on Saturday, May 21, at the Schenectady County Historical Society and is free and open to the public. The Schenectady County Historical is located at 32 Washington Avenue, Schenectady. The Historical Society is wheelchair ac-cessible and off-street parking is available. (P)

Insuring a commercial vehicle is much like insuring a private vehicle, only on a larger scale. Commercial insurance can be more costly than personal insurance, and selecting a company to handle your business requires much of the same compari-

Insuring Your Commercial Vehicleson work as shopping for an indi-vidual policy.

There are different levels of cov-erage with auto insurance, and company owners responsible for the safety and fi nancial security of employees and company equipment will have to fi nd a policy that offers the best marriage of coverage and affordability.

Insurance companies classify “com-mercial usage” according to differ-ent criteria. Therefore, a thorough overview of a company’s policy is in order to ensure that the coverage needed will be provided. Talk with an agent about how the vehicle will be used -- be it fl ower deliveries or simply hauling landscaping equip-ment -- to get an idea of what cover-age will be needed.

Because commercial coverage can be costly, especially if a business owner is insuring an entire fl eet of vans or trucks, there are ways to reduce the rates. Consider a higher deductible, which is the money that has to be paid out of pocket before the insurance company covers a claim. This can help reduce the overall rate. It is probably safer to avoid the discount plans to simply save money. While they may be cheaper, it could end up costing a business owner in the long run if a particular accident is not covered by a discount plan.

Those who simply want to get on the road legally and affordably could consider liability insurance, which generally offers the basic level of coverage. But again, talking with an agent will help uncover whether this insurance will be adequate for the type of business conducted.
