Remember

Thanks to the Childrens’ Book Council Australia giving us a generous grant of

$3000 we had a visit from illustrator Tom Jellett to celebrate Book Week. Tom

has published over 80 books and worked with our students over two days

explaining all about the role of an illustrator, how a book is made and working

with our students to develop their drawing skills. Students from Enngonia and

Goodooga came to hear Tom’s presentation and Weilmoringle students

dressed up as book characters. Tom also spoke to Hermidale, Giralambone,

Quambone, Carinda and Marra Creek students in person and held a video

conference with students from Louth and Wanaaring. Students had a great

time and especially enjoyed the walk around Weilmoringle sketching story

ideas. Two of our boys asked if Tom could stay and help them continue to

improve their drawing skills. He’s promised to come back next year!

Mosman Prep’s Visit in Week 3 was a great opportunity to share music and literacy lessons and for

Weilmoringle students to share our wonderful environment with our friends from the city. Students

built humpies as part of learning about built environments, they showed the Mosman Prep students

how to fish, shared an emu in the hole and visited Goodooga for the Indigenous Games. Special thanks

to parents, grandparents and family members who helped out during the week making it a very special

excursion for the Mosman Prep students!

Aquaponics and Sealife Adventure

We got to touch lots of interesting underwater creatures including

sea urchins and anemones. Trying on the scuba gear was fun and

as you can see we listened to some huge shells to check whether

we could hear the ocean. We also helped build our new

Aquaponics tank which will be the home to our very own fish farm

in the near future. Children (and staff) learnt that we can grow fish

in our new tank, use the run off tanks to grow vegetables and use

the fish waste to fertilise the garden. Thanks so much to Mr Camp-

bell—we are looking forward to his return visit and getting fish into

the tank. If you are interested in learning how to operate the fish

farm please let Mrs Wright know as we are looking to train some

volunteers to get involved.

RFDS Dentists made a surprise visit to test out their new dental van and

most children were able to get a quick check up and some minor

treatments. We are hoping they will visit on a regular basis at least twice

a term. They are happy to see adults as well as children on their next

visit on Wednesday 20th and Thursday 21st September. Please ring

Deb on 0268412560 to make an appointment.

We trained hard at school with Mr Battie and Mr

Duncan and it showed with all our students doing

well at the small schools carnival in Bourke and

again at the District Carnival. Lewis, Shayarni and

Nikylah qualified for the Regional Carnival. Lewis

was unable to attend as he was at Science Camp

but Shayarni and Nikylah did very well. We are very

proud of all our students giving their best. Thanks to

Aunty Stacey for taking the girls to the Regional

carnival in Dubbo.

Fantastic Fete

Thanks to everyone who came to the fete and those

who worked so hard to make it all happen. A great

day was had by all and it was lovely to see so many

smiling faces. Special thanks to Aunty Cilla who or-

ganised the donations for the raffle and cake stall,

Mrs Neale and Mr Duncan on the BBQ and drinks

nearly all day and all our sponsors including CRT

who donated the face painting and a raffle prize

and Walgett Police for the games van.

Our excursion to Brewarrina for a Chinese feast was a great success. All

students tried foods they hadn’t eaten before and most tried to use

chopsticks. The overall favourite was the fried rice but the dim sum and the

rainbow steak were also very popular.

Students helped build the new chicken coop and plant a

garden that was funded by a Barnardo’s & Aldi grant. We are

growing snow peas, beetroot, carrots, herbs and cabbages.

This week we had a visit from Waste Aid and received two

compost bins and a worm farm to help extend our garden

program. Waste Aid have made a short film which will be

used to help other schools learn about composting. Thanks

to the Brown family who lent us some chicken actors! Once

the video is ready we will have a ‘film premiere’ and invite

families and community to come and see how much we’ve

learnt and what amazing stars we have at Weilmoringle.

Robotics Students had the chance to

learn about Robotics and

program robots. It was a

fantastic day and students are

keen to do more coding and

robotics in the future.

Lewis had the

chance to go to

a Science,

Technology,

Engineering &

Maths (STEM)

Camp hosted

by the state

AECG at Lake

Burrendong.

He had an

amazing time

and met lots of

other young

Aboriginal

students from

around the

region. Thanks

Mr Duncan for

taking him!

These great new school

shirts for outings and

sporting events were

designed by Aunty Stacey!

Students also created

some excellent designs .

The Final Word! Firstly my apologies that the newsletter is late coming out. As you all know it has

been a very busy term yet again with the highlight for me being finding out that I

am now the permanent Principal of Weilmoringle Public School. I’m very happy to

be able to continue the great work we have started and thrilled to have the

opportunity to work with students, parents and community to develop the Strategic

Plan for the next 3 years. All community members and parents are invited to join

us for a Bonfire night to talk about future directions for our school on Wednesday

11th October. I will also be talking to every family in the first few weeks of next

term as we update our Personal Learning Plans for all students. This term we

have had the opportunity to work closely with expert colleagues from Sydney and

it has been wonderful for both students and staff. Mr Millward, Mr Panyatopolous,

Ms Oort, Mrs Ryan, Mrs Haller, Mr Lockwood, Mrs Herborn and Ms Cook have all

told me how amazing they think our school and students are. They are really

looking forward to catching up with the students when we visit Canterbury Public

School next week on our Sydney excursion. Students had the opportunity to have

extra one-to-one help with their learning and this has made a huge impact on their

results. Next term is another busy one and we have another visiting teacher and

two trainee teachers coming to work with us. The Christmas Tree sounds like it will

be a very special night and we have penciled in the Thursday 14th December.

This date will be confirmed at the P&C Meeting on Tuesday 10th October. It is very

exciting to see the growth that students have made so far this year and we are

very proud of the way they are all trying hard to Strive for Success!

Shayarni and Rebecca did a wonderful job of

representing Weilmoringle at the NAIDOC

Speech contest in Dubbo. They spoke

extremely well and I’m sure everyone was

very impressed with their understanding of

Aboriginal Language and Culture. After the

speeches we listened to Joe Williams speak

on “The Enemy Within”. Joe explained how it

is possible to overcome adversity with the

right attitude and he was very inspirational

Congratulations girls we are very proud of

you!
