President’s Message

I’m sure by now most of you have heard of the decision by the American Sighthound Field Association (ASFA) Board of Directors to recognize the Silken Windhound as a breed to run in the Limited Stakes at their events. This decision made over the strong objections voiced by the AWC Board was apparently made because the ASFA Board thought the inclusion of crossbreed entries at their events would bolster their treasury. Because of the total disregard of the interests of AWC members and other purebred Whippet breeders and fanciers, the AWC Board has decided to change the Lure Trial held at the National Specialty in 2010 to an AKC sponsored event. Lisa Costello, AWC Board member and National Performance Director is also drafting a follow up letter to the ASFA Board. The initial letter to the ASFA Board is published elsewhere in this edition.

Hopefully, by now, you are all also aware of the Board Bulletin Board that is in the Member’s Only area of the AWC website. The Board felt that this addition to the website would be a good way to keep member’s current with topics which we are addressing. (Lisa Costello’s initial letter to the ASFA Board was the first posting to this space.) The information posted there will also be disseminated through various columns here in The Whippet News but information will appear on the website as soon as any endeavor is accomplished – members will no longer have to wait from one month to the next to see that upon which the Board is working.

Just quickly, one more reminder that dues are due on or before January 1, 2010, in order to be eligible to vote in next year’s Board election.

PERFORMANCE REPORT As many of you know by now, the American Sighthound Field Association voted in early November to allow the Silken Windhound (SW) to compete in their Limited Stake, the first step toward breed recognition. The ISWS originally made a presentation for acceptance at the ASFA ACoD last spring. At that time the subject was dis-cussed by the AWC BOD, who were unanimous in not supporting the idea. The motion to accept the SW made in February 2009 was soundly defeated and most dele-gates and ASFA member clubs thought the issue was over. Then, in October, 2009 another motion appeared out of the blue to accept the SW registry with no addi-tional input or information from the ISWS parent club. No reason was given for why the motion surfaced again and why the original motion failing was not sufficient. The current motion was not widely published, nor was input sought from the majority of ASFA member clubs and it passed. On the heels of that vote came the mo-tion to accept the SW into the Limited Stake. Neither the AWC ASFA delegate, CJ Foxx, nor the AWC board were contacted regarding either motion or our opinion on ei-ther motion. Due only to a few alert ASFA board mem-bers questioning why they had not heard from the AWC on this matter were we able to send the following state-ment before the final stages of the voting phase on per-manent acceptance of the SW into the Limited Stake. "It has been brought to the attention of the American Whippet Club (AWC) Board of Directors that ASFA is dis-cussing the addition of the Silken Windhound to the Lim-ited Stake...the first step in the process of breed recogni-tion. The Silken Windhound is a combination of two old and distinct breeds, the Whippet and the Borzoi. It is not recognized by FCI or any other credible breed regis-try in the world and has very limited history with few generations as a "breed". In actuality, the first litter was whelped in 1987, 30 years after the first Cockapoos were bred, and 2 years before the first Labradoodles. The SW parent club formed in 1999. The AWC has long dealt with the issue of the "Longhaired Whippet" created by Walter Wheeler of Windsprite kennels and his follow-ers. This was a mix of Whippet, Borzoi and Sheltie as the main breeds with no record keeping and deception on the part of those registering the smooth coated offspring as Whippets with the AKC. Due to the dogged efforts of the AWC, most of Wheeler's dogs and their descendants were removed from the stud book and registration of the American Kennel Club. The Silken Windhound was then developed by Francie Stull who stated up front it was a mixture of 2 distinct and individual breeds and not, in the inception, a true breed unto itself. Although the Silken Windhound has a following worldwide, a breed standard and apparently a "closed" studbook, they are a very new "breed" and are truly no different than any of the other designer breeds now in existence (Puggles, Labra-

doodles, Cockapoos, Chiweenies, etc. etc.). The AWC does not support ANY mixed breeds incorporating the Whippet and are thus opposed to allowing them to run in ASFA. We also question AFSA's role in determining what is a breed and what is not, outside of their usual acceptance of breeds recognized by FCI. The Whippet and Borzoi have completely different hunting styles, the Whippet being a single and direct pursuer of game, the Borzoi tending to hunt in pack style with lead and flank dogs. How do you now judge a mixture of the two breeds? What is their running style? Who knows? How will ASFA determine this? What will keep breeders from breeding Silken Windhounds to purebred whippets to gain speed or purebred Borzoi to gain stamina and strength? How would we know this was being done? What does that mix look like? The dog world has been inundated recently with the ad-dition of hundreds of "designer breeds" marketed by puppy mills, the internet and pet stores. The popularity of these mongrels marketed as "breeds" has cast an even dimmer light on purebred dogs and their dedicated breeders. We, as a parent club, do not support the inclu-sion of any mixed breed dogs into purebred dog activi-ties, including ASFA lure coursing. American Whippet Club Board of Directors" I will be drafting a follow up letter to ASFA regarding the motion passing and will publish it in the December WN. This issue has raised some very spirited discussion amongst whippet breeders and fanciers and the usual people who post to the whippet internet lists. This is a very complex issue and one the AWC board discussed extensively. We did not have an opportunity to solicit input from our membership prior to contacting ASFA as the regional director for our delegate chose not to con-tact her or solicit her opinion prior to either vote this fall. If you have input on this matter, you can contact me or any board member via e-mail, phone call or snail mail. I have long been an ardent supporter of ASFA and their organization, often to the complaints of many who have wanted an AKC trial as our national specialty showcase. It is my personal feeling that ASFA made a mistake when voting on an issue of this importance without soliciting our club and the membership for our opinions. As a re-sult of the ASFA decision, the AWC board has chosen to hold an AKC trial in conjunction with our national spe-cialty in Tucson for 2010. Lisa M. Dear Vendor: The American Whippet Club is hosting its 24th National Specialty at the Inn Suites Hotel in Tucson, AZ. National activities begin at the hotel on Monday, April 19, 2010 and run through Saturday, April 24, 2010 culminating with our Best of Breed Competition. The vendors will be set up in the ballroom. We should have enough space for all vendors but we will have overflow space available in the Lobby area. The hotel will be available to you starting at 6:00 pm on Sunday, April

18th with set up until 9:00 pm and may continue on Monday but must be completed by 5:00 pm. Booth removal and clean up of your area must be completed within four hours following the conclusion of judging on Saturday, April 24th. All trash is to be placed in proper receptacles. Vendors should be aware that the ballroom will be locked up at night but please do NOT leave items out on your tables. Cost is $175.00 for a 10’ space, which includes one 6’ table, tablecloth and skirting and two chairs. Payment must accompany your application form. Applications must be received by February 1, 2010. Space assignment is on a first come, first served basis. Maximum footage allowed per vendor will be 20 feet. Booths can be no more than 6 feet deep, including the table. Nothing may touch, lean or be attached to the walls. The cost for space is a flat fee for the entire week, no pro‐rations. Electrical hook‐ups will be available on a limited basis at no charge. Booth spaces will be assigned by the Vendor Chair. All unloading, set up, tear down and clean up is the responsibility of the vendor. I first saw Annie as an 8 week old puppy in Bo’s back yard playing

with her littermates. Little did I know she would turn out to be as

beautiful, successful and great contributor to our breed with 15

champion offspring.

I followed Annie for many years and was thrilled when she walked

in my ring at the 2008 National specialty.

As I went over her on the table I wondered if she could still move like

she had when she was younger. I wasn’t disappointed. She was still

dead sound and smooth as glass going around the ring and I awarded

her a Select. The above image is one of my favorite photos from that

National and I will always remember that wonderful Veteran girl.

How to Write a Whippet Book (or Not)

So many people have asked about the next edition of

my book “The Whippet” that I thought it might be a good

idea to write something about it. It’s no wonder that there

have been some concern because a lot of people sent pho-

tos and answered questions when I was working on it,

which seems like a very long time ago now.

The short answer is that the book is in the works, but I

still don’t know when it will appear in print. May I take this

opportunity to tell you something about the book publish-

ing business? That might prevent the (fortunately unique)

reaction on an earlier occasion, when a Whippet fancier

who shall remain nameless threw the book upon the

ground and stomped on it when he found that he was not

mentioned in it.

Of course there’s no reason anyone should know any-

thing about book publishing unless you happen to be a

writer. It’s a strange business and no picnic in the park, I

can assure you, especially if you’re one of those people

who say “Oooh, I’d like to write a book some day…” — as if

it were just a matter of finding a few days in your busy

schedule to whip up something for the publishing world to

fight over.

To write a book you must first be able to write. That

seems obvious, but clearly it isn’t. If you’re not capable of

stringing complete sentences together, or if you’re not sure

of the difference between it’s and its, who and whom, lay

and lie — forget it. And you must be able to keep at it, sit-

ting down every day for several months, perhaps years,

staring at the blank page (or computer screen) in front of

you, and then produce your daily quota of words, sen-

tences, pages and chapters… or that book will just remain

an appealing figment of your imagination.

You must also have something to say. That’s pretty

obvious, too, but exactly what that is only you can decide.

You need an area that you know so much about that you

have expertise to share. It can be a very specialized field

(Whippets, for instance, or how to make macramé plant

hangers out of old pieces of string, or something equally

esoteric) — the amazing thing in this wonderful country of

ours is that the old saying about mousetraps often applies:

build a better one, or know how to write about it, and the

world will beat a path to your door.

That last statement is a truth with modifications,

though, because finding a publisher willing to print your

book is probably the biggest stumbling block of all. The

world is full of authors with manuscripts in search of a pub-

lisher. You can self-publish, which means you pay for the

printing yourself at any of the outfits that specialize in

this… but it costs the earth, it’s tantamount to admitting

nobody wants your book, the result inevitably looks ama-

teurish, and if you don’t have a publisher to help with mar-

keting and sales the sad truth is that your book will sink

like a stone, so even those who might want to buy it

probably won’t be able to find it.

SIGNING A CONTRACT

The above is just the beginning. Once you have written

a manuscript that’s been accepted by a publisher (you sign

a contract, you get a surprisingly small sum of money), the

publisher in reality “owns” your manuscript, and you have

very little say about what happens with it. So you wait, and

then you wait some more. That’s where we are now with

the Whippet book: complete manuscript of over 135,000

words (not quite “War and Peace” but nearly twice as

many as contracted) and about 600 photos, also far more

than initially planned, were delivered to my publisher on

July 1st, 2009. Four months later all I’ve heard is a couple

of mildly reassuring “We’re working on it…” The idea is

(was?) to get the book out in time for the AWC National

Specialty in April, but if that will happen I don’t know.

One thing you learn as an author is that your book is

not the center of the universe for your publisher. Maybe if

you’re John Irving or Jackie Collins, but not the rest of us.

It makes sense: publishers have several books in the works


at the same time, they all take more time than planned,

and your turn comes in due course… some day. I re-

member asking when I last wrote a book for this pub-

lisher if I had a completed manuscript by Christmas,

could they have the book out by summer? Hollow

laughter ensued, and THREE YEARS LATER the book

was finally in print. (It was worth it, though, if I may

brag a little: it won several awards, even the IBDA Ben-

jamin Franklin award for “Best Reference Book of the

Year”, with world history and child rearing books as

runner-up and in third place. That’s pretty good for a

dog book.)

What takes so long? Well, if you have a responsible

publisher they will first have an executive editor read

through the whole thing to make sure it’s worth pub-

lishing at all. Then a text editor goes through every

sentence with a fine-tooth comb, checking spelling,

grammar, names etc. (These people hate AKC names,

by the way: how come some dogs are Sporting Fields,

others Sporting Field’s, Sportingfield or even Spflds? I

tell them AKC lets us choose the spelling we wish, but

they don’t believe me.) And then there’s the fact

checker who obviously doesn’t know much about dogs

but is on red alert for inconsistencies or lack of clarity.

(Why do you say this dog won the National in 1986 in

one place but 1987 in another? Oops. And when you

say that dog was Top Ten one year, what exactly does

that mean? Etc. etc.)

DOING RESEARCH – OR NOT

This is where I tell you about the research I feel is

necessary before putting anything in print. Not all au-

thors do research: one dearly departed lady author

who, as the saying goes, wrote more dog books than

she ever read, made a habit of simply including in her

books whatever anyone sent her. She obviously didn’t

do any research of her own, and I remember a chapter

on Poodles in England that basically consisted of one

sentence: “In England there are many famous Poodle

kennels.” Geez. (That was a breed book, and as I’m

sure any child knows almost all American Poodles go back to

English stock.)

What you have to do is sift through every possible

source of data. Contrary to popular belief, AKC can’t tell you

who the top winning this or that is (producer, breeder, win-

ner), but if you have plenty of time and patience, and pref-

erably enough money to stay in New York and go to the

AKC library for a few weeks, you can dig up a lot of interest-

ing material. I spent many hours working my way through

the early records, the founding of AWC, etc., and the help I

got from several generations of AKC librarians was invalu-

able. (The fact that AKC recently terminated the librarian’s

post is outrageous and will have serious long-term effects

on our sport, but that’s a different matter.)

We are very fortunate in our breed to have Barbara Par-

sons, who has kept track of the sires, dams and breeders of

all the new AKC Whippet champions (over 200 in 2008

alone) for many years now, and I owe her a great debt for

giving me access to these records.

Of course a number of champions should not be the

single criteria for which kennels are featured in a book.

There are also specialty wins, which were easy to find in the

old days when we had three or four AWC specialties per

year, but are harder to track now that we have so many

more specialty shows — 16 at last count. There are also the

all-breed wins, which are not compiled in toto anywhere: a

list of all AKC BIS wins since that award first became official

in 1924 would be fascinating, but necessitates someone

wading through thousands upon thousands of AKC Show

Awards pages for several decades. What I rely on are the

annual Top 10 (or 20) statistics, published in various forms

since the 1950s, but these days it’s quite possible for a

Whippet to win a BIS without making it into the year-end

top rankings.

THE REST OF THE WORLD

So much for the U.S. show scene. The world has be-

come a lot larger in recent years, and the new edition of the

book should reflect that. I already had done extensive re-

search at the Kennel Club in London, poring over old Stud


Book records and early breed history, and it was not

that difficult to update the development over there, but

it was also necessary to expand on the rest of Europe,

Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, South America,

South Africa and Asia, all of which have thriving Whippet

populations. Finding the right contacts and getting reli-

able data from them was a chore, but it was also fasci-

nating: I learned a lot. Eastern Europe in particular is

fairly hopping with Whippet activities these days!

One thing that was not good in previous editions

was the imbalance between conformation and field cov-

erage. The former is my speciality, the latter admittedly

not: I have coursed and raced, but not nearly enough to

have pretensions to any kind of real expertise. Along

came two saving angels in the shape of Lisa Costello

here in the U.S. and Gay Robertson in Great Britan: I

am deeply grateful to both of them for having the pa-

tience, energy and knowledge to dig up all the neces-

sary data and help me whip this into a shape that I

think is both readable and informative. It was also nec-

essary to add a chapter on health and hereditary dis-

eases (something nobody even thought about when I

wrote the first edition 25 years ago), and Lisa came to

the rescue again. Working with her was a true pleasure.

We are lucky to have Lisa in our breed, with her unique

combination of knowledge in both field activities and as

a veterinarian.

PHOTO HEADACHES

Then there were the photographs, which provided

their own set of problems. Deciding which dogs were

important enough to merit a photo in the book was a

headache in itself. Finding images of all these dogs that

were good enough to print, that had not already ap-

peared in other books and that we could get permission

to use without paying a fortune was incredibly difficult,

sometimes impossible, and always involved a large

number of emails, begging, bartering or whatever. (I

still don’t know what we are doing about the famous

great LIFE Magazine portrait of Ch. Courtenay Fleetfoot of

Pennyworth after he won BIS at Westminster in 1964; the

copyright fee is in the four figures, and I don’t blame the

publishers from balking at that. But it’s a great shot.)

Fortunately, there are several wonderful photographers

who realize that the budget for a book such as this one

doesn’t allow for huge fees. I am deeply grateful to them

and to all the other people who sent photographs of their

dogs. There’s a big stack sitting on my desk, and they will

all be returned in due course — but preferably not until I’m

sure the scans the publisher has are OK.

When the book is finally published, please don’t get

upset if you find that you’re not mentioned in the book, or

the photo you sent is not included. First, the publisher may

simply cut text or photos even though I don’t want them

to. Second, let’s be realistic — we’re talking about more

than a century of breed history and a whole wide world of

activities, so in a book of this kind it’s obviously necessary

to focus mostly on those breeders and dogs that have had

the greatest long-term, national (or even international)

success. If you’ve bred scores of champions over a couple

of decades, had great success in both specialty and all-

breed BIS competition, produced several top sires and/or

dams… well, then I hope you will find yourself fairly repre-

sented.

At least I hope you won’t throw the book on the

ground and stomp on it.

P.S. Can you make money writing dog books? Sure, a

little, but if you balance that money against the number of

hours involved it doesn’t even qualify as pocket change.

You write because you enjoy it, and if the final result turns

out well that’s reward enough. One major exception was a

breed encyclopedia I wrote years ago, which sold more

than 500,000 copies and would have made me a small for-

tune in royalties (about $1 per book) —except that I didn’t

think the book was very good and sold all rights to it for a

song, so didn’t get a penny of those royalties…


WRAP Report: Escape to Rescue By Brigitte Greenberg

Dash is a 10-year-old brindle and white boy who, according to Whippet Rescue and Placement volunteer Nancy Billups, had a traumatic life up until coming into Rescue in October. Billups said she believes he was abused every day for at least four years. As told to Billups, the scenario played out on a daily basis with the owners leaving their other two dogs outside for the day and Dash inside the home alone. Dash would act out by tearing things up and peeing on the floor, the wife told Billups. “The husband would then come home and ‘spank’ Dash for peeing on the floor,” said Billups, of Amarillo, Texas. “This went on for four years until about a month ago. The same scenario happened once again, but this time Dash bit the husband in the face. The husband went crazy and chased Dash through the house, and Dash ran so hard and fast away from him and went to run under the bed. “He ran so fast under the bed that he hit the metal rail under the bed and split his back open along the backbone,” Billups continued. “The wife took him to the vet, and they stitched up a three-inch gash along his backbone. The husband then wanted to put him to sleep and told the wife that he hated the dog.” The wife contacted Billups and drove 15 hours to get Dash into Rescue. “I believe the wife is abused too. That is why this went on for so long,” Billups said. “I am so glad that we were able to save Dash from this horrible situation that he was living in, and I am also glad that the wife was able to admit to me what was taking place and for saving Dash. I just hope she can also get the help she needs as well.” While WRAP has a policy of not adopting out a dog that has bitten in the past, each volunteer foster care provider must make an evaluation of any such Whippet to deter-mine whether a bite did, in fact, occur and if so, whether it's likely to recur. In this case, Billups, a WRAP regional director, determined that Dash faced extenuating circumstances. “Dash has never shown anything but love towards myself, my husband, my mother and my friends, wagging his tail at the new people he meets,” Billups said. “He also has been wonderful around all of my dogs, big and small as well. I do think he was provoked and terrified by the circumstances that he was in. How he doesn't show any lasting signs of the damage that he suffered is amazing to me. I think he bit in defense of himself and felt cornered with no way out, and he attacked his attacker and that it was a one time incident.'' Billups said Dash is now thriving and that he is enjoying

the companionship of other Whippets, Italian Greyhounds, Ibizan Hounds, Chinese Cresteds and one Chihuahua in his foster home. “He has learned to use a doggie door and is now crate-trained and has also put on weight. He has not torn up one thing, nor has he ever urinated in my home,” Billups said. “He is a perfect gentleman and even ‘woof, woofs’ to me when I ask him to.” Billups said Dash loves treats and wearing his sweater now that it's getting colder. “I have developed a very special place in my heart for this sweet old dog” she said. “He is an old soul and has such a sadness about him. I am hoping that being here with me in a house surrounded by love and other dogs, that he will lose some of the sadness that you can see in his eyes.” Addendum: As of this writing, Billups said she thinks she has found a home for Dash. She reports that a home hospice nurse who has three older dogs, a Greyhound, Cocker Spaniel and Labrador Retriever has expressed an interest in adopting him.
