Fellow Chapter NC-A members

I know many across the country have asked about and may be con-

cerned about the new structure of GWRRA. This link will download the latest communication I’ve seen from the national organization.

I want to thank Alice and Ron Myers for their excellent job as Chapter Directors.

They’ve devoted much time and effort to making Chapter A continue its path of excel-lence. As we come to the last month of their tenure, please join me in personally thank-ing them for all they do.

Alice Myers will be assuming the positing of chapter MEC in January. Paula Hines will

transition from Chapter Educator to Chapter Ride Coordinator. Helen Wilson will be as-suming the position of Chapter Treasurer and Debbie Nadel will take over the duties of Sunshine Coordinator. Colleen FitzGerald will continue as Chapter A Newsletter Editor.

I want to thank outgoing staff members: Dwain Strader for his job as Rider Coordina-tor; Pat Wilson for her efforts as Treasurer; Linda Worland for her duties as Sunshine

Coordinator; Cheryl Davis as chapter MEC, Janice & Bill Butner as our Couple of the Year. We appreciate your efforts and hope to continue the progress you’ve made.

I’ve made reservations for Chapter A’s potential Chapter event for May 12, 2018. We will discuss it at the chapter planning session to be hosted at my home in January or

early February.

I’ve scheduled a MFA (medic first aid) renewal class at my home with Linda Hojnacki for

Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 8:30 AM. This class will be limited to 12 attendees and is open to all NC members. Please submit registration information to me via either

email or US mail. The information needed is as follows: Name, chapter affiliation, GWR-RA membership number, GWRRA membership expiration date. The cost of the class is $30.00 and checks may be made out to North Carolina Rider Education and in the

memo field put MFA/CPR/AED. This will be a new and renewal class as the data has changed.

Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving, but let us continue the spirit of thankfulness. Let’s be thankful for family, good friends, our GWRRA family, good times and safe riding!

As we enter this Holiday Season, we’re riding to Butner on December 2nd to share Christmas with the residents at Murdoch Developmental Center and help make their Christmas more joyful (and ours, too). The weather forecast predicts we will be riding in mid-50-degree weather after experiencing a balmy 70 degrees on November 29 – almost a 20 degree drop! Brrr – this is a lot like last year!

Riding at 50 degrees F at a speed of 65, can give us a wind chill temperature of 38 degrees F – definitely cool, although bright sunshine could raise that a few degrees. You can access the NOAA wind chill calculator at http://www.wpc.ncep.noaa.gov/html/windchillbody_txt.html.

A rider’s first defense against wind chill is a windscreen, fairing, and a wind-resistant outer layer of riding gear, including a full-face helmet, gauntlet-style gloves, heavy socks, and boots and neck protection. This can be sup-plemented with insulating base layers and/or heated gear, depending on the level of protection needed.

If you experience hypothermia (defined as body temperature below 95 degrees (normal about 98.6 degrees), which can cause shivering, confusion, loss of coordination, act promptly. Get off the bike at a location with warm shelter, consume warm liquids, and evaluate whether it is safe to continue in current weather conditions. In the case of advanced hypothermia, seek medical assistance promptly.

We are just entering our winter riding season and will be experiencing colder temperatures; so please keep this information in mind.

Road conditions should be good for Murdoch this year, no black ice, no snow – but when wintry precipitation does hit, be aware of reduced traction situations and avoid riding in higher risk situations.

Ron Myers and I have new wheels, ah, knees, that is, and we’re looking out at our bikes, knowing we have phys-ical therapy and healing to do before we can ride again, but we’re thinking, SOON, PLEASE! Thank you so much for the prayers and good wishes from our Gold Wing family! You truly are wonderful friends.

Remember to sign up for the Medic First Aid Class to be held February 10 at Tom and Colleen FitzGerald’s home.

As we look forward to the NEW YEAR, let’s affirm our commitment to safe riding and improving our knowledge, skills, and enjoyment. We truly are Friends for Fun, Safety and Knowledge!

With the month of November over, we not only had a great Thanksgiving with

our family, but had a great month of visiting with our GWRRA friends. We missed our own Chapter Gathering to travel to T2 Albemarle to

chase the Couple’s Plaque; unfortunately we did not capture it.

We still enjoyed being with T2 Members, as they always have a great and fun Gathering.

To round out the month of November, we were able to capture the plaque 1 out of 3 times.

We captured the Central Couple’s Plaque a total of 24 times for 2017, the most by any of the Central Couples. All plaques are retired now, so this completes our 2 year tenure as

Chapter A Couple 2016-2017, and we have enjoyed representing Chapter A over this

timeframe. We took our appointment serious and every month we visited and supported

each of the Central Gatherings, chasing the Couple’s Plaque every time it was available.

We are proud to say we visited all the NC Chapters. In these two years, unfortunately we

have been in attendance at so many of the Gatherings as they were holding their last one, and it became an inactive Chapter.

Besides attending all the Central Region Chapter Gatherings, we attended Wilkesboro Gathering this

month. During the Gathering Clyde announced that all Veterans in attendance, both members and visi-

tors would have their meal paid for by the Chapter – very nice of them to do this for the Veterans. After-

wards, we were invited to go and eat ice cream with them at the local creamery – lots of fun!

Other extra activities, found us heading to our annual Chapter Beach weekend. We were able to stop on

the way and visit with dear friends, the Drapers in Supply; he and Bill are both retired from the Airport

Police Department, and had lots of fun catching up. We enjoyed being with everyone at the Beach and

certainly GOD could not have provided us with any better weather.

Once again, we attended the Toys for Tots Event hosted by NC-N Burlington; Bill rode on the Chapter

Ride which was a very nice ride through the countryside.

Bill, Henry, and Dave (Carl and John when they can) continue attending NC-W- Eden Chapter Wednesday

Breakfast Ride which always is a different restaurant each week to eat breakfast, and enjoy a great ride afterwards.

We look forward to our annual events in December and hope everyone can attend; Gifts on Cycles – Mur-

dock Center on the 1st Saturday and on the 2nd Saturday, our Chapter A Christmas Party.

Bill and I have made so many friends while traveling and enjoyed being part of the Couples Program. We wish the best to whomever becomes the new Chapter A Couple; you will find it a rewarding experience,

finding closeness that only the Couples share within GWRRA. Again, thanks to each of

you that supported us in our travels these last 2 years.

Now we hope to not be on such a tight schedule, attend GWRRA Gatherings when we

can, save some money, do more camping and enjoy our Grandchildren! We wish every-one a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year (2018), with GOD’s blessings with Good

Health!

Our A gathering was opened by Chapter Director, Alice Myers, welcoming every-one (43 present). We discussed sicknesses and anyone who needed some special thoughts; then had a moment of silence. Cheryl greeted guest chapters as follows: B2 Winston-Salem (1), H2 Durham (3 + District), N Burlington (3), and prospective new members Larry and Jane Weavil. Everyone welcomed 2 new members, Mark & Deb Nadel, and they received their new member packet and Piedmont Wings patches.

H2 Durham captured both the Tarheel Plaque and the Central Travelers Plaque from A. NC-A captured the Region N Travelers Plaque and it will now be retired for

2016-17. Our Chapter Couple, Janice & Bill Buckner attended T2-Albemarle’s gathering along with Bruce Wing. The vest drawing winner was NC-A AB Kimel.

Paula Hines, Chapter Educator and four others gave interesting talks about temperature of tires in cold weather, wearing layers in the cold, pot hole dangers and the advantages of having Rescue Plus from your GWRRA membership when you have trouble out on the road. Dwain S. discussed meeting at the I-85 Rest Area to ride as a group to the Murdoch Center. He will send more details.

Linda, Sunshine and Care Bear, recognized November birthdays, anniversaries and GWRRA anniver-saries. The Murdoch Center basket, furnished by John & Shirley Dye, was won by Shirley of NC-N Bur-lington. Thanks go out to Henry Jinnette, Chapter Photographer, for capturing moments of the monthly events and to several others who posted event pictures. Milton shared that Veterans were going to have a special license tag—send in your ID# and receive the tag for free. Dave W. talked about benefits at the Richard Childress Shop in Welcome on 11/18/17. Contact Dwain Strader if interested in the jackets he is giving away.

50/50s were won by John Dye (A) and Barbara Hands (A). See you at the next gathering, December 14th. Reporter: Colleen FitzGerald Ride Safe. Cheryl & J.R. Davis MEC- Chapter NC-A

Annual Beach Trip continues with pizza, ice cream and wonderful desserts. Enjoyed trips to the War Bird Park and Myrtle Beach Veteran

Memorial.

WAR BIRD PARK is lo-cated at the entrance to the closed Myrtle Beach Air Force Base. It is an area that covers the base history from its inception before WWII and when it closed in 1993. The air craft are the types that were stationed there. Henry served there from

1971 to 1974.

IT HAS BEEN AN HONOR

by Jim Rambo, Region Trainer

As the GWRRA Regions wind down their duties and responsibilities I want to convey to you, the members of GWRRA Region N, the Appalachian Region, the honor, and privilege that I have had in serving as your Region N Trainer for the past several years.

As we look back to our appointment in 2013 followed by the official announcement in January 2014 I have a sense of satisfaction with all that we have been able to accomplish.

I hasten to mention that I have been privileged to work with some truly outstanding people as we embarked on this jour-ney. It was absolutely through their effort, enthusiasm, and dedication that these goals and objectives that we set were able to be accomplished.

Those truly remarkable people include the following:

Kentucky – North Carolina – Michael and Dedre VanHoose Tom FitzGerald Jeannie McKenzie and John Main Robert Ferguson, Sr Susan Huttman Tennessee – Max Thomas Carol and Tom Scully Virginia – West Virginia – Ken Taylor Beth Ann McCormick Zach Bon and Lorrie Thomas Brenda Murphy

Some of the notable accomplishments that I am most proud include the introduction of the Region N Trainer of the Year Program. This was the first time that recognition and an award was being given to a University Trainer without regard to whether the recipient was an officer or not. Nominations for that recognition came from the membership. Collaboration and discussion among and between the District Trainer, District Educator, and District Membership Enhancement Pro-gram Officer occurred in selecting from among the nominees the person who they felt best represented training in their District. The members selected as the District Trainer of the Year were forwarded to the Region Trainer. The selection of the Region N Trainer of the Year followed the same format as at the District. The Region Trainer, Region Educator, and Region Membership Enhancement Program Officer reviewed the nominations and jointly selected the nominee who they felt best represented training within the Region.

The following members have been selected as the Region N Trainer of the Year:

2015 – Wil Bell, Sr…. Virginia District Trainer of the Year

2016 – Zach Bon…. Virginia District Trainer of the Year

2017 – John Bryant…. North Carolina District Trainer of the Year

Other accomplishments included the collaboration of the Virginia and North Carolina Districts to plan and conduct a joint training event in 2016 at a venue that was on the border of those two districts. That event was phenomenal! Members from all over the Region traveled to Danville, Virginia to have FUN and take advantage of some truly outstanding train-ing. The North Carolina District repeated that training experience in 2017.

In 2016 we had the opportunity to host a NEW Lead Like You Ride training event for both Region A and Region N in Pi-geon Forge, Tennessee followed by one the three (3) inaugural Instructor Training and Certification Program (ITCP) the next day.

The FIRST EVER, Region N All Trainers’ In-Service was conducted in Charlottesville, Virginia during March 2017. This event was envisioned and coordinated by Lorrie Thomas, who at that time was the Virginia District Assistant Trainer. I was very much gratified and impressed to see trainers from all five (5) districts attending the event. Plans for repeating this event in other areas of the Region were disrupted with the announcement of the GWRRA Restructuring.

I owe so much to my ever-faithful Region Assistant Trainer, Susan Huttman, who, over the course of the last two years have offered very valuable and insightful experiences from her work with various non-profits that we incorporated into our planning.

I am also grateful to John Skinner, Virginia District Director for allowing me to “steal” Lorrie Thomas and promote her as one of the Region N Assistant Trainers. Lorrie’s energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to training cannot be overempha-sized.

I have had to privilege to work with and be a team player with some GREAT Region Directors, namely, Alan Little, Mike Mitchell, and Glenda Keough. Glenda, was the most instrumental in giving me the latitude to develop the GWRRA Re-gion N University as a proactive and collaborative resource for our members.

None of this would have been possible without the support, confidence, and occasional calming by my wife, Beverly.

As we conclude our Region responsibilities, we ARE NOT going away…. we will be attempting something new, which we haven’t done since we joined. We are going to be members participating with our home chapter.
