The ‘Art’ of Forgiveness

An interesting legend is associated with the painting “The

Last Supper.” Some say Leonardo da Vinci used a rival’s

face for Judas. Then when the painter tried to create Jesus’

face, all he could see was that of his enemy. Supposedly, da

Vinci was able to complete Jesus’ face — and the entire

masterpiece — only after making peace with his enemy and

repainting Judas.

This tale shows the necessity of forgiving other people so

we can accept

Jesus’ for-

giveness for our-

selves. As Jesus

says in Matthew

6:14-15 (NIV),

“For if you for-

give other people

when they sin

against you, your

heavenly Father

will also forgive

you. But if you

do not forgive

others their sins,

your Father will

not forgive your

sins.”

A Love Scene

Hollywood once made a film called “One Man’s Way,” based on the life of theologian Norman Vincent Peale.

When Dr. Peale and his wife saw the movie, they were particularly interested in a love scene between actor Don Murray, who played Peale, and Diana Hy-

land, who played Mrs. Peale.

Mrs. Peale remarked to her husband, “I remember this incident very clearly, but I don’t remember it being nearly so exciting.”

“Remember, my dear,” said Dr. Peale, “they are

professionals and we were only amateurs.”
